Welcome to SpaceSimCentral.com

It was a daring move to follow those weak comm signals out this far into space, but you lucked out. You have found SpaceSimCentral, a station that has been tucked away for some time at the edges of our galaxy where only the brave and adventurous travelers dare to go to seek fame and fortune. SpaceSimCentral is one of the last stops before you set off on new adventures in the vastness of deep space. We do get many travelers that tell great tales of merchandise and even things you can get for free if you know where to look. So, finish docking your ship and check-in your valuables and spend some time chatting with the locals on the station and maybe you will discover something you have been waiting a whole lifetime to find.

Enough of the intro, I'm DarkOne the Admin of SpaceSimCentral and we have been around a few years and are striving to become a great source of news, lore and a file repository for your favorite and upcoming space/scifi gaming titles. I have always tried very hard to make SSC a community where both developers and gamers can discuss what they want to see in games and developers can show off what they are working on and get honest feedback from gamers first hand. To all of the developers out there, SSC has always been very accommodating to developers in that we give them free forum space here on SSC to discuss their games with the public. There are quite a few projects going on here at SSC so you might as well join in on the fun as well.

So have fun exploring SSC, the site is going through some major changes and will probably continue to change for the coming months. But this is for the good and I look forward to peoples opinions on what they think and with any luck I can get some members to write up some articles and blogs about their favorite games so I don't have to do all the work. So checkout what SSC has to offer and do register and let us know of any new games or help us out with locating old mods/patches. Enjoy the community and see you in the forums.

Game Like Elite: Dangerous ?

24 Oct 2014

Hi People! I'm new here.

I'm a star trek online player. But i really like space simulators with cockpits and maybe with procedural system! I love to explore strange new worlds!.

I have Sony Vaio Vpceh1s1e/B (Intel Core i-5 2410M 2.30 Ghz, 4GB RAM and Nvidia Geforce 410M with 2,7 Gb of VRam)

I tryed x Rebirth.. but it lags on my pc

I found on internet that Elite: Dangerous should work on pc with low graphics but i really don't know if my pc will support it.

So Do you know similar games ? that i could play with same characteristics ?

Captains Log Supplemental

24 Oct 2014

Posted by MawhrinSkel In: Shallow Space

So the blogs been quiet and there hasn't been a post on IndieDB in a while, but we’re no less busy forging greatness here. The blog is being completely redesigned to be friendlier to the information hunters with a landing page, FAQ, wiki, gallery and linear blog layout planned. That release is imminent we are just tightening up a few bolts.

Meanwhile the latest video portrays a direction change in the art department which will make it a lot easier to start implementing some of the assets that are being produced, highly detailed planets and some more suitable weapons effects on the top of the agenda there. A new musician enters the scene as we dispense with the hypnotic soundscapes and bring in something much more suited to the genre.

Custom ships are now being produced which fortunately fit right in with the placeholder assets. Sure we could have gone for higher-poly models but we like to keep things performant, even though frames per second matters far less for an RTS than say a twitch-gaming shooter we still don’t want things slowing to a crawl during the action for those peeps running older machines.

Feature wise I’ve been busy adding missiles and programming the little buggers to react by shooting them out. Also I've been making the environment a little more responsive by making the asteroids crack and split on collisions, I've also been making the ship movements a little more ‘natural’ and fixing up the UI which had some apparent bugs in that last video.

With Christmas in the way the plans to Kickstart are put on hold for the next few months, as it becomes harder to entice people to part with their cash on that platform I’ve been spending a lot of time looking at successful KS projects and extrapolating best practice – one things for sure, the future of this project will not rest solely on that bundle of uncertainty.

Also, we require help with the following:

·         2D UI designer: designing elements such as waypoint circles and interface icons

·         Concept artist: To help realise the vision of the 2nd part of the game: The grand campaign map and help put together art for the Kickstarter

If you can help with that leave a message below and we'll come back to you. Hi-resolution images available on the Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/shallowspace

Lord of Rigel: An Upcoming 4x Space Strategy Title

23 Oct 2014

Posted by LordofRigel In: FPS, Strategy and Tactical Scifi Games
Lord of Rigel is a 4x (Explore, Expand, Exploit, Exterminate) in the fashion of classic games such as Master of Orion 2 and Civilization. Although there have been many recent efforts to re-invigorate the 4x genre, many of these games have intentionally or unintentionally emphasized certain gameplay aspects such as combat or the economy over providing a complete, balanced, space-opera strategy game experience. Our goal is to provide a accessible, yet deep, turn based strategy game.
We're developing it in the Unity engine, and our first release will be proof of concept demo showing off tactical combat and galaxy creation.
This free release will coincide with the beginning of a crowdfunding campaign with the stated goal of releasing the next stage of development. We want to ensure that our supporters will get somewhat frequent updates.
Lord of Rigel, like its spiritual predecessor Master of Orion, is heavily based on scifi tropes. As such, each species represents a major trope in science fiction ex. the Katraxi fit with a warrior species archetype. Like the series that came before, this game is set in a loose enough setting that players can imagine specific conflicts that occur during their games being moments in some of their favorite space opera franchises.
What are some of the core features of Lord of Rigel?
  • Turn based strategic play and tactical combat
  • Randomly generated Galaxies with a wide range of customizable parameters
  • 10 Pre-set species with unique characteristics
  • Species customization
  • Minor species, including two Elder races waging a cold war
  • Rich technology tree ranging from lasers to artificial planets and dyson spheres
  • Fully customizable space ships for waging war
  • Easy to grasp but deep economic system
  • Leaders, either mercenaries or from your empire, who are shaped by their successes and failures.
  • Diplomatic system that is simple, but has considerable depth
  • Several victory conditions including military, diplomatic, and research options
  • Strategic resources that require unique strategies to acquire, hold, and exploit

Fractured Space

22 Oct 2014

As MV2000 posted in the shout box a few days ago Strike Suit Zero devs are making a new game http://fracturedspace.com/ only a few details so far on the site including some WIP pics.

Fractured Space is a team-based space combat game that puts you at the helm of a colossal capital ship. Each 5v5 match offers an intense cosmic skirmish, rife with deadly exchanges between craft, but underpinned by a grander strategy. Take advantage of your ship's unique abilities and weapons in order to exploit your enemy's weakness, take control of the map, and work together to execute eviscerate your opponent. Combining the best elements of competitive PvP action with the fiction and politics of popular science fiction, Fractured Space is at the forefront of a new frontier for the genre.

Space combat has reached a singularity.

With 5v5 matches, your skill in combat alone cannot secure victory. Sway the tide of battle with your decisions over the battle as a whole, and bring the enemy to their knees with your tactics as a team. Unity is strength.

Pick a manufacturer, choose a class and customise your weapon load-outs. Use Galactic Coin - the spoils of war - to purchase new ships and start populating your fleet. Customise your craft for a specific role in combat, and be the envy of your team when your interstellar juggernaut warps into battle.

No team will go into battle with the same setup, giving you a unique set of choices and options in a given match. Know your ship, learn your environment and adapt your tactics accordingly.

Become part of a huge alliance of captains. The discussion on strategy is endless; share your war stories, learn from others and become a part of the Fractured Space universe.

If I would buy a joystick would it be compatible with old...

22 Oct 2014

I want to buy a modern joystick but I am not sure whether it will work when I'm playing Wing Commander with it. I want to go back as far as to the first game in the series. Also as far as I know TIE Fighter doesn't allow you to play it with a keyboard...only with a joystick.

Any suggestions/experience regarding new joysticks?

Starpoint Gemini 2 Review

21 Oct 2014

Posted by sscadmin In: Starpoint Gemini 2

I am definitely not done playing SPG2 yet and can't wait to check out the mods that are being created. With mods being created for SPG2 I think this game will have a nice long life especially if the devs support it and keep patching and adding new things every now and then. This could bring in some money for a few years while they work on  the sequel :)

The review is posted here: http://spacesimcentr...i-2-review-r117

I will be interested in hearing peoples thoughts and game experiences. I hope everyone is enjoying SPG2 and for those that haven't tried it you are missing out on a nice open world (free roam) game and if you liked the SPG1 this is a must have.

Game Analytics

21 Oct 2014

Posted by fluffyfreak In: Pioneer
Recently, as in the last 3 years, I've been thinking about who plays our game, what specifications their machine has, what OS, how long they play, where/when they die ad-infinitum...
So I've started to integrate an example using their REST API for the GameAnalytics.com service.
Obviously this will need several things:

  • discussion - is this something we want to do?
  • agreement - user must agree and be able to opt-out / opt-in as they choose.
  • anonymity - I don't actually care who is playing the game, just how many, how and on what etc.
  • Linux & Mac ports - I'm only writing the Windows version right now - help would be appreciated when the code is more final.
  • More developer control over the GA account so I'm not a single point of failure & so others can mine the data.

The reason I want to know all this stuff is because currently I'm doing things like the OpenGL 3.x work and later on the BGFX port without knowing how many users it will impact.
We don't even know how many people actually play Pioneer! Or in what countries, or what languages!
Recently there was the post by K-Hideyoshi where it turns out that we might have hundreds of Chinese players... did anyone know we had hundreds of people IN TOTAL playing Pioneer? I had no clue.
So what do people think?
What concerns would people have?
Is it a good idea?

Stardust Colonies - a uniquely AI-driven sci-fi RTS

18 Oct 2014

Posted by Elendurwen In: PC and Console Gaming
Stardust Colonies is an AI-focused hybrid between RTS and an emotion management game. It’s sci-fi and will have a great story full of dark suprises and hard moral choices.
In the game, you take on a role of a Colonizator, and a member of a high-tech alien species that defeats and colonises other planets. Each of your minions has its own happiness and energy level that affect how it performs. Happiness of a minion is determined by whether it likes the task it’s doing (mining, farming, breeding) and by its other personal experiences. You also need to keep an eye on the energy of your minions and let them rest from time to time so they return to work fresh.
In later versions of the game, there will be hostile alien creatures and RPG-like tech tree
Help the game get original 3D graphics and a dark atmosphere on Kickstarter
(Free demo included on the page)
B-Ten said: “Looks amazing.. Combines the best elements of both RTS and 'Emu Sims'"

Camera / damage system

16 Oct 2014

Posted by NeighborKid In: Shallow Space

So I found this game while I was bored on the net, and I have to say I'm really interested! It looks awesome!  I've already had one of my questions answered(mod tools). I was also wondering would there be a chance that we might be able to see a setting to set the game into a "movie" or "cinematic"  mode like in star wars Empire at war?   I know it's kinda an extra thing, but with how your game looks now(beautiful) It would be rather awesome to kick back and watch a battle unfold listening to music etc..   Example ->

secondly.. Will there be any form of module damage system?  Such as main weapons destroyed, Bridge smashed, Engines damaged/ Destroyed, Shield generator destroyed.. etc?
