Welcome to SpaceSimCentral.com

It was a daring move to follow those weak comm signals out this far into space, but you lucked out. You have found SpaceSimCentral, a station that has been tucked away for some time at the edges of our galaxy where only the brave and adventurous travelers dare to go to seek fame and fortune. SpaceSimCentral is one of the last stops before you set off on new adventures in the vastness of deep space. We do get many travelers that tell great tales of merchandise and even things you can get for free if you know where to look. So, finish docking your ship and check-in your valuables and spend some time chatting with the locals on the station and maybe you will discover something you have been waiting a whole lifetime to find.

Enough of the intro, I'm DarkOne the Admin of SpaceSimCentral and we have been around a few years and are striving to become a great source of news, lore and a file repository for your favorite and upcoming space/scifi gaming titles. I have always tried very hard to make SSC a community where both developers and gamers can discuss what they want to see in games and developers can show off what they are working on and get honest feedback from gamers first hand. To all of the developers out there, SSC has always been very accommodating to developers in that we give them free forum space here on SSC to discuss their games with the public. There are quite a few projects going on here at SSC so you might as well join in on the fun as well.

So have fun exploring SSC, the site is going through some major changes and will probably continue to change for the coming months. But this is for the good and I look forward to peoples opinions on what they think and with any luck I can get some members to write up some articles and blogs about their favorite games so I don't have to do all the work. So checkout what SSC has to offer and do register and let us know of any new games or help us out with locating old mods/patches. Enjoy the community and see you in the forums.

Skydive's control panels

05 Mar 2015

Posted by Marcel In: Pioneer Mods

I've started this topic because I posted a picture of one of Skydive's control panels in the Screenshots forum.

This is not my work. These control panels were made by Skydive from the Pioneer dev forum.

I made them into mods so I could try them out. I haven't asked Skydive if it's OK to share them, but since he was willing to share them with me I'm sure he's willing to share them with you too.

Note: The main folder"Skydive_cpanels.zip" is NOT a mod file. Don't place it in your mods folder. The files named "cpanel**_mod_skydive.zip" are the mod files. Extract them one at a time into your mods folder to try them.

How do you picture flying a Cap Ship vs Fighter or similar.

04 Mar 2015

Just curious on everyone's thoughts on this. We have had space fighters and millenium falcon style ships in games for years and generally there is plenty to pick out and say "Yeah, this is how I like my small spacecraft to fly around". But of the few games that do it I haven't yet found one where if you get to fly a Capital Ship it feels like your flying a massive big space cruiser, either a restricted first person view makes it hard to control or you can spin around to face directions like a ballerina because your cap ship basicly controls like an oversized fighter.

I'm more thinking of single player experience, given that I know a few have been done recently in the form of a multiplayer 'crew' which is nice, but not always available.

So, how do you guys picture your ideal cap-ship commanding experience?

Elite-like space sim Spaceforce: Rogue Universe for $1

03 Mar 2015

Hi guys,

I'm Igor from Dreamatrix studios. We are a small Croatian indie developer and we've made an Elite-like space sim Spaceforce: Rogue Universe.

It got a pretty good review on Gamespot. They gave it a 7.5. Here's a gameplay video.

The reason I created an account here and a topic here is because we are running a Kickstarter campaign for our new RPG title Wave of Darkness.

We've made pretty good rewards, and one of them is for a pledge in amount of just a buck.

So for just $1 you can actually get Spaceforce: Rogue Universe, or any of the other two Spaceforce titles, wallpapers and an MP3 song.

For 5 bucks you can get all the Spaceforce titles, while for $15 you get our new RPG Wave of Darkness and all Spaceforce titles.

I hope my post isn't too intrusive. We need all the help we can get and I believe our rewards are pretty cool :-)

Thanks for your time

From Bedrooms to Billions: The Amiga Years

02 Mar 2015

Posted by sscadmin In: PC and Console Gaming

Looks like there is a documentary being made about the Amiga and how it changed gaming.

Check out the kickstater here: https://www.kickstar...the-amiga-years

I would have to agree that the Amiga was too advanced for its time and was kicking the crap out of the PC. If Amiga would have won that battle what would gaming be like today? I have a lot of fond memories playing on my A500 and talk about unique games there was so many games and not the rinse and repeat of sequels we seem to be in these days. Now I play Amiga games on a emulator and just wish that someone could re-kickstart the Amiga and make it a great computer and gaming platform that was cheap like they did in the 80's and 90's.

Favorite publisher of those days was Psygnosis they made some seriously great games.

Starfall Tactics

02 Mar 2015

Star Tactics is a new tactical space warfare game from the Snowforged Entertainment development team. With the game using the Unreal4 Engine the visuals just look great and it does remind me a lot of Conquest: Frontier Wars (which isn't a bad thing).

Check out the game website here: http://starfalltactics.com/

Core Features:

Tactical combat
Fight your battles using a variety of ships - from subtle frigates, to deadly cruisers and heavy dreadnoughts. However, a reliable fleet isn't the only ingredient for success. Effective commanders will have to rely on their ability to properly assess the situation, taking into account many factors, such as the equipment of enemy ships, the surrounding environment and the available technology.

In-depth customization
Everything in Starfall Tactics, from the hull of your ship down to the individual engines, is created using blueprints. Players can easily customize and outfit ships, adapting their tactics for a variety of situations. Every choice matters - the diverse range of tools directly influences your strategy against opponents and allows you to create truly unique fleets.

Glorious battles
Experience epic battles, balls-to-the-wall explosions and stunning visuals delivered via the Unreal Engine 4.

RIP Leonard Nimoy

Leonard Nimoy died today from COPD at the age of 83.  What can you really say about this Scifi icon that hasn't already been said.

My tribute is this very amazing scene of Mr. Spock, always a touching one.

You were everybody's friend Mr Spock. You will be missed.

Posted by SJones In: Colonisation: Moonbase

Hi everyone

First off I want to apologize again for the long delay in updates, and to cover the situation with the development of the game.

As of November last year I had to get job as the game took longer than planned to finish and subsequently ran out of funds to support myself, my plan was to get a part time job so I could finish the game in a timely manner, after applying for a retail job for 25 hours a week I did get the job, however they have asked me to come full time over Christmas and the new year. Essentially this meant that I had little time to develop the game unfortunately.

With that said I have spent most of my spare time during those months working on the game and thankfully my hours at my current job are going back down and have had time once again to focus on the game, rest assured that I will not "give up" and I ask for a little more patients.

With the bad news out the way, I want to focus on the good news of whats actually been happening with the game.

First and foremost the biggest change from the last update is the semi-redesign of the build menu, the original was boring, plain and slow and the newer version shown in update 25 was all over the place and was hard to read, so I took the design and made some adjustments so that it is easier to understand and navigate whilst looking interesting.

Second biggest change are the maps themselves, I have been working on them all and making them all look better whilst improving performance. They are all almost complete, I am having a few issues with the collision areas and play ability so that you as the player do not get frustrated when trying to build stuff and yet not have any odd bugs (buildings half built into the ground)

Third change, this one includes lots of little things though, the colonists management system, this includes colonists health, happiness, wage, region origins, investing, searching and how they effect the overall income of science and resources all working together to add depth to the game. I am currently working on fixing issues with colonists training and education within your base. Previously all of these where mostly implemented but was not interacting with each other.

These are the main new things that have been added, however though the last update said there was a feature freeze there is a new feature that is being added, and I hope that you all agree that it will be extremely useful for this kind of game - stat tracking, this comes in the form of graphs so you can measure your resources over time, tracking everything from resource amounts to colonists average happiness to the number of buildings built on the map.

The above was something I had thought about previously however I was going forego it, After talking to a publisher they where on the fence on whether to take my game on or not and this, along with the build menu was the 2 main criteria they felt needed adding/improving.

This graph system is implemented into the current development build of the game however there are some major performance issues with it that need to be addressed before its of any use.

On some more good news, the mission system has also been given some more thought too, in the current implementation you can progress through levels to unlock new missions, however the older missions become redundant and easy to complete, the plan here is simple - to increase the difficulty with the level so that they are still relevant at the end of the game as they where at the beginning. Furthermore, the plan is to have 30 missions per level and a total of 11 levels (0-10) giving a total of approximately 330 missions and while not fully implemented into the game, 200 of these have been designed already.

Along with all the above have been many bug fixes and little features added such as a right click "quick menu" colour corresponding text (red for negative green for positive etc) more building models added, balancing, story, save menu options and graphic menu options including culling distance for different object types to ensure that even the slower computers out there have a chance to play the game.

So whats left you ask

As development continues the final version of the game comes closer, so here is a list of whats still to do

Complete the story (aprox 65% complete)
Add story into the game - story UI and Story progression mechanic
aprox 100 more missions (aprox 63% complete)
Add missions to game (mostly copy and paste)
Orbital infrastructure

20 more building models (mostly end game structures, aprox  75% complete)
Texture existing buildings (50% complete)

Search for buildings by resource amount (re-design of the UI for this)
Implement tool tips (feature is partially added, just need the text to complete)
More audio (SFX)
Fix and improve tutorials (current version has a "quick tutorial" - that's not so quick, but quicker than the interactive tutorials.)
Bug fixesPolishing up little bits

I will post another update soon with some pictures and possibly even a video of the current game.

Corrupted saves and random accusations of piracy

24 Feb 2015

Posted by Porsenna In: Pioneer

I have been playing the latest version of Pioneer more or less since it was released. But in the last couple of days, a few odd things happened to me.

First, Pioneer started crashing to desktop when opening any save (and autosave) I had. Annoying, even if not hugely so. I deleted them all (including autosaves) and started again.

But now I often get random accusations of being a space pirate and police attacks. I'm in the habit of pausing the game and saving when I land, then browse the boards, and then I inevitably get the problem when I press Play again to restart normal time flow. But, and that's the most annoying thing, after the bug occurs I inevitably get the same problem even if I reload a different save file - immediately after I load and press Play the laser shots and the piracy accusations fly off. Another case of save file corruption?

Is this something that is happening to others too?

So Alien 5 has been greenlit http://www.denofgeek...cially-greenlit with Neil Blomkamp to direct.

And it look like granny Ripley back in the form of Sigourney Weaver no doubt killing aliens with her zimmer frame, even more surprising is that Hick's may be back as well. Maybe they are just going to pretend that Alien3 and Resurrection never happened, bit like Dallas :haha:

Descent Remake By Former Star Citizen Devs

21 Feb 2015

Hi Folks

Just found out that Eric Peterson (Formally of Star Citizen & along with some others) has opened his own game studio called Descendant Studios. There is a forum <here> with more info. Their plan is to make a game somewhat like Descent but with much more expanded roles for players. Although its not finalised yet Eric is presently working with the Unreal 4 engine to create the game and will be attempting a fund raising when they have more to show potential backers.

Here is a vid from Eric (in his typical style) announcing his plans for the game:

Here is a sneak peek of one of the drones in the game. I can see the resemblance to the bots from the original Descent games. :girlcrazy:

I also noted a problem with the links to Descent 1&2 Re-birth Mod in this old post of mine <here> and fixed it for those who may be interested. :queen:

Terminus on Windows 7 64-bit)

17 Feb 2015

I managed to track down a copy of this game from 2000, which many consider a classic, I think, and I can't get it to work on Windows 7 64-bit.  I looked all over the Net for a solution but no joy. I even tried using a virtual machine (VirtualBox) with Windows XP and I got a direct3D error.  Is it possible to play this game on a modern Microsoft OS?  Thanks for any help.

Star Wars Original Trilogy Mod

16 Feb 2015

Posted by Stormprooter In: Freespace I & II

This is one to watch IMHO.

Still in development (Public Beta), but is it very fun to play. If you are a big fan of the original X-Wing/Tie Fighter series (up to and including X-Wing Alliance) - then you should find this quite compelling.

The game-play 'feels' so good, the sound and music are spot on, and the graphics ain't half bad either.

Mod details here: http://www.moddb.com...nal-trilogy-mod

Here's a video of me playing one of the test missions - "Battle of Endor", just to give an idea . . .

Gearing up for the Kickstarter

15 Feb 2015

Posted by MawhrinSkel In: Shallow Space
The team is focusing on collecting media, quotes and words for the impending Kickstarter. The lead developer muses about the current state of play and we start to look at some early UI mockups. All this and more with new GIFs and imagery over on the IndieDB news article 'Alternate Reality'
Brian starts to discuss some core gameplay mechanics such as asymmetrical balancing and abilities and eludes to so much more over on the blog's latest article.
We have setup our own forum using the very latest technology and right from the get-go the forums have become a bustle of activity with suggestions, comments and recommendations both on and off topic. We'll keep things up to date here but our own forums are shaping up to be quite the wealth of information. Head over, register and get involved.
