Welcome to SpaceSimCentral.com

It was a daring move to follow those weak comm signals out this far into space, but you lucked out. You have found SpaceSimCentral, a station that has been tucked away for some time at the edges of our galaxy where only the brave and adventurous travelers dare to go to seek fame and fortune. SpaceSimCentral is one of the last stops before you set off on new adventures in the vastness of deep space. We do get many travelers that tell great tales of merchandise and even things you can get for free if you know where to look. So, finish docking your ship and check-in your valuables and spend some time chatting with the locals on the station and maybe you will discover something you have been waiting a whole lifetime to find.

Enough of the intro, I'm DarkOne the Admin of SpaceSimCentral and we have been around a few years and are striving to become a great source of news, lore and a file repository for your favorite and upcoming space/scifi gaming titles. I have always tried very hard to make SSC a community where both developers and gamers can discuss what they want to see in games and developers can show off what they are working on and get honest feedback from gamers first hand. To all of the developers out there, SSC has always been very accommodating to developers in that we give them free forum space here on SSC to discuss their games with the public. There are quite a few projects going on here at SSC so you might as well join in on the fun as well.

So have fun exploring SSC, the site is going through some major changes and will probably continue to change for the coming months. But this is for the good and I look forward to peoples opinions on what they think and with any luck I can get some members to write up some articles and blogs about their favorite games so I don't have to do all the work. So checkout what SSC has to offer and do register and let us know of any new games or help us out with locating old mods/patches. Enjoy the community and see you in the forums.

Planet exploration game suggestion?

22 Dec 2014

Posted by LHLF In: PC and Console Gaming

Hi everyone!

I'm a fresh new member here and have just introduced myself on the introduction thread, where you can read a little bit of some of the "major" space games I've played (though I forgot some obvious one, like Mass Effect, which I truly loved to death, no matter what some poor people might think of the ending).

The thing with space games for me is.... I don't care much for the space combat and such. I mean, of course I like it too, and like to fit my ship with new gear and whatnot, but to me, the COOLEST part is traveling around and, especially, getting to know new planets. And I mean new planets for real, with people, not the usual run-of-the-mill barren wasteland with resources to gather and some salvage aliens to kill. I understand, of course, that those are essencial and "realistic", after all very few planets are in the "goldilocks zone", but hey, it's more fun when there are some (or many) inhabited planets as well.

However, I find that most (or none?) of the space games actually give planets their due attention. The most I see is what Freelancer (I used to hang out in certain sectors because I loved the look of the planet's surface), ASCII Sector, Vega Strike, and some others do, which is the star port of each planet or station, where you can buy stuff and get new jobs at the bar. You see, if that is different and has a different feel in every place, I already get much happier. However, I loved Mass Effect because of it's lack of space combat in exchange for LOADS of planet terrain and cities to be explored, with people you could talk to, from different places and races, with their own cultures and background. THAT is what floats my boat. Maybe I'm more of a "space opera" kind of guy, I don't really care for labels, but the fact is I don't see games like that around.

I don't care if it's new or old, with fancy 3D graphics or pure monochrome Ascii. If it's got that kind of thing and depth, I want to play it, and I thought this would be the perfect place to ask!

Looking forward to your suggestions!

Realistic physics (orbit dynamics) games out there

19 Dec 2014

Hi there

I was wondering if there are any realistic physics games out there, besides Orbiter and Kerbal Space Program. "Realistic" within the realm of what is possible, of course. A decent approximation of orbital dynamics could be enough to be called realistic, I guess.

To me that's part of the lure of space simulation, synchronizing orbits, careful docking, planning fuel etc. So I'm always trying to find more games along those lines :) Do you know of any in existence or being developed right now?

Install question

17 Dec 2014

Posted by XenonS In: Starpoint Gemini 2

I have just bought the PC DVD of SG2, nice Artbook, nice Galaxy Chart, but I have install problems:

Looking at the DVD, it seems that the files are on it in order to install the game, or is this not the case? I see some huge files for about 3-4 GB.

Whatsoever: I have a Steam account, I click the setup.exe, but Steam wants to download a 7.5 GB file, which at my guess will last 5-6 days...

I have then deleted the "Local Content" for the game on Steam and entered this in the Windows Execute:

C:\program files (x86)\...\Steam.exe -install E: ,

then I get a error message saying Connection Timeout or similar.

Can the game be installed from DVD?

Thanks to respond,

Evochron Prototype Shadow Test Video

15 Dec 2014

Posted by Caleb In: Starwraith Games

This video shows the prototype shadow system being developed as part of the new graphics system in the new game engine. The video includes tests for two cockpits and one spacecraft model with local shadowing applied at a high detail level. The system is adjustable to allow for lower levels of detail in efforts to improve performance on older/slower system configurations. Other elements of the new graphics system are also adjustable for balancing between performance and quality/detail.
It's likely the shadow effects in conjunction with other possible planned features will likely require pixel shader model 3.0 minimum, but the benefits of the new graphics systems can be seen in this test video with effects like shadowing. It's well worth moving to a newer graphics minimum to implement such effects and such a move would also be appropriate timing for the possibility of incorporating such a new graphics system into a new game in the series, providing a fresh start with a new framework.
The original graphics systems of Evochron Mercenary, which were largely developed more than 5 years ago, were designed when Vista was the latest version of Windows, most gamers were still on XP, and gaming resolutions were commonly below 1920X1080. The new graphics system is being designed with 1920X1080 as a baseline minimum, so elements like special effects, texture resolutions, and object details are being created with that target goal in mind. So increases in the minimum requirements would also likely apply, compared to EM. However, it's not yet established what those requirements might be as there are many elements left to be finished before final analysis and testing can and may be completed.

The Battle of Europa

12 Dec 2014

Posted by AgeOfAscent In: Age of Ascent

Please join us for a prealpha playtest of Age of Ascent this Saturday, the 13th of December at 2pm Central US | 3pm East US | 8pm GMT/UK!

The battleground has changed. Who will win control of the outpost at Jupiter's moon Europa?

If you took part in the last test, please don't hesitate to give us feedback on your experience!

Microsoft recently wrote a highly informative MSDN white paper on the exciting way our technology will usher in a new era of ultra-MMOs and how we are using Azure to process, coordinate and distribute over 267 million application messages per second to our players.

Some of the improvements we've added over last few months:

  • Jupiter and Europa await
  • Dynamic music and variations
  • Improved targeting indicators for in range and on target
  • Improved mouse control
  • Shields now regenerate, so you can break away from combat and recover
  • In game tally board
  • Your ship's weapon no longer hits instantly. You'll need to learn to lead your fire!
  • Guns cycle x3 faster, but each plasma bolt does 1/3 damage
  • Warning indicator when on low health

There's also a summary of everything that we're doing with Age of Ascent available.

All that is required to play Age of Ascent is a modern desktop browser; e.g. IE11, Chrome, Firefox, and an internet connection. There is no download, no sign-up and no commitment (other than the ability to blast others out of the skies!) We're simply doing a live public demo of the massive, player-versus-player battles that are at the core of the game. We're pushing the boundaries of how massive a massively multiplayer game can be - without downloads, plugins or installs.

Just go to the official Age of Ascent site and when the countdown timer reaches zero, the game will load automatically. If it doesn't, just refresh your browser!

See you in space!

Elite Dangerous not doing a character progression wipe

11 Dec 2014

Posted by sscadmin In: Elite: Dangerous

Most MMO's that I know usually whipe progression and ranks and things like that and the users usually have a headstart in the game to help with that.

With Elite Dangerous having a huge part of the gameplay is discovering and scanning, don't you think its a tad unfair that now people probably have to go further out from their starting points to discover anything?

I say this is a bit wrong because the alpha/beta players have a general idea where the better systems are that will give them the most rewards so they will discover them first, but least let it be equal footing and everyone starts with whatever they prepurchased or used the headstart for.

Just my .02, not trying to bash here. But with exploration being a big part of the game the mad rush to find things will be coming soon and to see a bunch already discoved is a tad disheartening for a person just starting day one.

Combat in Pioneer?

11 Dec 2014

Posted by ProcDrone In: Pioneer

Hello! I am new here to the SSC, don't be to hard on me :)

I have a question. I was playing Pionner for a while, but never got anywhere with earning money, so it was just an exploration game for me, but recently, i've done quite few trade runs, people transportation, and i managed to outfitt my ship with shields, weapons and so on.

I wanted to try some pirate stuff, I've jumped to Sirius, and checked where ships are located... and ended with failures.

Catching up with the ship is really hard, autopilot offers limited help, as far to get close, and i might manage to change the relativity target, but i end up with most of my fuel burned, and its almost impossible for me to get to any planet, or station with the reserves on me...

Here is the question. Is there an "easy" way to intercept ships in deep space? Any mods that help with that, any tutorial would also be nice. As for combat itself, its not a problem as long as i manage to get close enought to change the relativity vector... but getting there is hard...

Anyone got any suggestions for me?

When I try and start up Pioneer the cursor doesn't show up, however I can still select options and when I start the game it crashes shortly after showing the starting position. Additionally, after crashing my computer runs very slowly as the game was absorbing most of it's resources.

Anybody have any potential fixes for my problem? I've attached the output.txt incase it helps at all. Attached File  output.txt   2.26KB   3 downloads

AuroraRL: space roguelike-like game

09 Dec 2014

Posted by MrGenLee In: Free SciFi Gaming Projects

Hello, folks.

We are a russian indie-developers and we're making a roguelike-like story-driven game, that's influenced by Star Control 2 and Space Rangers.
In this game, protagonist's goal is to save earth from consiquences of the ecological crisis. And to achieve such goal, you have to explore the space and planet, communicate with aliens and do a text quests. Hovewer, there is nothing to stop the player, if he wants just kill aliens and fly through galaxy.
Some screenshots here:
Space view:
Battle on some planet:
Space battle:
Conversation with alien:
Senior officers (from left to right: Sarah - the main engeneer, Henry - combat officer and Gordon from the science team):
Technical information:

Game engine - Java, slick2D
Non-generated maps drawn in TilED
Game is avalible for Windows, Linux and MacOS(there might be troubles with Retina displays)
Right now, AuroraRL is an alpha-build, version 0.4.0, to be exact. But even at this stage it's absolutely playable and contents a lot of stuff (1/3 of the main story, dozens of side-quests and special encounters - and this is not even 1/5 of the planned features). And, as you may notice already, it's being developed in Russian, by a Russian indie-developers. But English version is in works, and will be done, hopefully, 'till march/april of 2015. But you can check the game itself right now, to see the basics of game mechanics, some impressive artwork and, overall, the game in general.

I hope that I got you excited. That's probably the first time in 2 years of development that our game is shown to a foreign website. We will be glad to hear some feedback, positive or negative. We understand that without the English version there is no way to estimate this game fully, but if you have some questions - we well be happy to answer.
Here's some links:
https://auroraroguel....wordpress.com/ - official developers blog (english)
https://bitbucket.or...ra-0.4.0_RU.zip - game itself(note: IT'S A RUSSIAN VERSION)

The State of Play

06 Dec 2014

Posted by MawhrinSkel In: Shallow Space

A potent new update over on IndieDB with some cool GIFs and some blurb regarding improvements to the UI, hinting at sounds on the horizon. The prototype starts to take shape as the UI becomes geared towards the easier management and control of your wings and the inclusion of mining betrays the direction of the games mechanics in the short to medium term.

Also we enter the runnings for the IndieDB 'Indie of the year awards' for the first time so please head over and vote, no registrations required - all this and more over on 'State Machine' the latest IndieDB article.

More new images over on the blog with two posts since my last update here: ‘The Needs of the Many’ talks about the evolution of ones man’s dream into a team of talented and driven developers and if you’re hungry for more check-out ‘Resistance is Futile’ which is the previous IndieDB update talking about the swift change in graphical direction and an amusing tussle amongst the team.

We have a newsletter now which will grant you access to the media before it is publicly released and the aim is to release something twice monthly and much the same as these posts, will serve as a focal point for the spread of media – the difference? You get to see the cool stuff first.

Finally, here is the latest video which is a menagerie of sorts as we cover the progress of the game over the last 4-5 months in the second ‘Progress’ video and if you're interested, here's a link to the first one.

Coming soon is a new vid showing off Frigates and fixed weapons, mining, new weapons effects and an extra special surprise so be sure to sign up to the newsletter to see it first!

Iron Sky: The Coming Race

06 Dec 2014

Posted by sscadmin In: Sci-Fi Movies and Television
Coming off the successful Iron Sky: Invasion movie there is another in the works and this is some B-Movie goodness here. If you liked the first one you should like this one and what is not too like... you have a Sarah Palin president (um she's an alien?), Dinosaurs and was that Hitler..? Awesome! Never mind the fact they are doing a whole journey to the middle of the earth thing with a world inside a world :)

Return of Kings Quest

06 Dec 2014

Posted by sscadmin In: PC and Console Gaming

I just saw this and I have to say WOW this is actually an amazing trailer to hopefully bring back to life a series I played a lot when I was a kid. You can play some of the older games (KQ 1-3)here as remakes: http://agdinteractiv...ames/games.html

But what they are showing off in this trailer almost has a mix of Dragon's Lair in it so it could be fun and if the story and the puzzles are good it could be a great game. But I remember playing these games for weeks on end so I would hope it is a 50+ hr game at the least.

Suborbital Spaceflight and Re-Entry, seamlessly! :)

06 Dec 2014

Posted by Damiano In: Nova Voyager

Dear All,

Finally I am going to post a new series of videos that will focus on seamless space travels.

In this video we are going to travel from city to city flying over 100 km from the ground.
This is called Suborbital Spaceflight and allows to reach much higher speeds than a traditional planetary flight because there is less or no atmospheric drag.
We are also going to see a typical Atmospheric Re-Entry done with the help of the Reverse Thrusters.

P.S. Don'f forget to vote Nova Voyager for the Upcoming-Indie-Of-The-Year-2014 contest, just visit on the link below and click on "Vote". Heartfelt thanks!! :)

Reputation System

05 Dec 2014

Posted by ExpandingMan In: Elite: Dangerous

I have no idea how it works, and there is pretty much no info (that I can find anyway).

Is it worth building rep, what does it really do?  I have no clue.  The feds caught me smuggling once and they have been hostile with me since Gamma.  On the other hand, this seems to have no affect on me whatsoever.  If I wanted to fix it, I'd have no idea what to do.  I built up pretty good reputation with a federation member corp, but this seems to have no affect on the feds opinion of me.

Also, I really haven't figured out how to make a lot of money yet.  I have gotten my Cobra, but the economy seems pretty weak pretty much everywhere, so my profits aren't scaling up very nicely.  I did get one transport mission with a huge payout (it was clearly because I had good rep, but it also seems to be very, very rare), but for the most part the only thing that makes a lot of cash right now is trading.  So another question is, will building rep help me to make more money?
