What will you do?

Based upon the excellent Reddit FAQ found Here and watching over videos, I now am convinced that I will pre-order the game. However, I am struggling with what to do. Its an open ended game, but it has SOO much content that I need to figure out what I should do to make money. After all, ships are better at certain things, and it helps if you are using say a science ship, for exploration.

Anyhow, from what I can tell there are a few ways to make money, and the choice is yours. (cue Morrowind voice.)

Trade. (Follow other traders or find your own mineral deposits and jump from system to system trading.

Fight. (Missions and Piracy in space, and on the planet stealing from 'factories' containing rare blueprints. Kill the robotic guards i.e. sentinels, and take rare components off of their uh.. corpses.)

Explore (Find rare creatures and resources and sell the data for fat cash. Watch big space battles, and salvage the remains, find alien technology and sell it from the environment. etc.)

What will I do? Ive been trading in Elite games so long, I think its time to become a fighting explorer. Take on missions, land on the planet and take in the sights. Whats interesting is I have HATED exploration in other games. I mean downright hostile towards it. I always thought that space exploration was lame for lack of a better term. Who cares about a flyby of a moon? I wanted conflict and rising tension, action and interaction between the player and the world.

Yet NMS reaches back into my childhood and that joy of discovering something new right around every corner in the wilderness. Suddenly, making yet another trading run, seems soul sucking. I want to analyze creatures and learn about them, I want to see alien landscapes and sunsets. I want to have wild adventures as I try to find my way back to my ship.

Its an odd feeling. Anyway, I don't see myself trading this time around. How will YOU play the game?

If your going to invoke Morrowind invoke Morrowind! Thread needs a theme tune..

With NMS I will do what I usually do with expansive games of discovery and adventure: just wander around and learn as I go; a space hobo, knowing not what my destination or what encounters await me. There will be people out there searching for the meta and quantify everything they come across, but that not for me, as it takes a lot of the "magic" away from any game. I will never have the most discoveries, I will never have the best ships or loadouts, but none of that matters. If NMS can do like Morrowind (still the best TES game by a county mile, although Skyrim had it's moments too) did and let me get lost in it's game world then it's a winner in my book.

They say you could spend days/weeks just mapping out your starter planet on foot. That kinda of scale is amazing and just discovering new creatures, plant-life or artifacts will be pretty fun for a while on your new planet while you figure out all the systems to the game. I would like to run into a real player in the game hopefully at some point and if we can ever make stations or bases I will be busy constructing SSC in the game somewhere  in the fringes of space 🙂

I like your ideas, but it has been confirmed there will be no way to communicate. Even through text chat. Nor will there be any building of any sort. Only crafting. After seeing the team of ten people, I HIGHLY doubt they will add it in at a later date. They really seem to be sticking to their guns with this game. Look at the combat, it looks pretty darn clunky, not that I mind, but I think they put all of their resources into the procedural generation. You cannot even upgrade your ship! Only cosmetically. You are meant to find new procedurally generated ships. 😛 Also.

18 QUINTILLION. Thats like 20 zeroes or something. I don't really see anyone finding someone else. 😛

@Geraldine I suppose we play games differently.  I work 6-7 days a week, so I generally focus myself on one or two aspects. Take Elite, I traded and fought. In Morrowind I only ever did the Fighters guild, mages guild, side quests, and main quests. Never even tried a stealthy character. 😛 I prefer to learn as much as possible before playing the actual game. With limited play time, I try to maximize the fun! If I just wander around willy nilly, I tend to get frustrated because I'm not built for the stuff I enjoy the most.

For instance, lets say you get your first ship, and it has bonuses for combat and weapons. Yet you realize you enjoy exploring, but your scanner isn't strong enough to make money, and your ship cant get you to other systems since you can't afford fuel. Do you fight for a new ship? Or do you sit on the planet and grind away at resources and such? For me its a matter of time spent. After work if I'm not having fun, I'll play something else.

With a bit of preparation, I know how to build my character so I'm not tempted to restart, and I can just enjoy the game at my leisure and playstyle. I've already planned to upgrade my scanner first...

...and wander off into the wilderness! 😀

Even though the trailers and playthroughs contain alot of spoilers. (Ill keep them to myself.) I still have the enjoyment of SEEING these things for myself, so I don't really feel that I'm ruining anything. Also, some of the mechanics with NPC's seem pretty poorly documented. Instead of getting frustrated, I know what to do now.

Different playstyles. 🙂

Not going to pre order it but as we get it about two days after everyone else it will give me a chance to see if the game requires an active online connection, if it doesn't then I intend to go all Hitch Hiker Guide To The Galaxy and find one of life bearing planets.

This is the big draw for me as very few of these games have ever attempted to simulate anything like the plant and animal life and oceans and even finding stuff under the ground that No Man Sky is trying to do.

And here I had hopes of building some day in addon/patches. Maybe its for the better so they force me to leave my planet into the vastness of space. Shame they will not allow any type of communication at all. This game is a big effort so I was going to wait a bit to see how the game does at launch. With 20 Quintillion places to visit I think there will be some undiscovered places left for me to find when I finally get the game 🙂

They said it would take like a billion years to visit them all, even with the current player base (pre-orders) I'm pretty sure there will be alot of ground left to cover. 😉

Havn't heard anything about an online connection, in fact they said it was completely offline if you want it to be...

... then again Frontier Developments made some pretty big lies that sounded the same. Still mad about that.

So i don't understand, is NMS an MMO like Elite or not? I'm not interested in MMO, i prefer a single player experience and i don't want to stay always connected since i've some problems with my internet connection.
