I particularly remember one dark rainy night

I remember an overnight ferry voyage from Chania to Piraeus. There was one mother of a storm that night.

On topic, from the news I see here, New York seems to have it real bad. How's NH looking, D1?

Kudos to your government. And just as well, as you have a problem on your border with Turkey, yes? That seems to have dropped out of the news here in the UK.

Yes. Nearly 20.000 illegal immigrants were transferred to our land borders and forcefully tried to enter the country. With the help and support of Turkish authorities (They even supported immigrants, with non lethal weapons fire, across the border). Now things have calmed down somewhat, but they still probe our borders. Thankfully, there are also European reinforcements deployed in the region, and I believe that eventually they will back down. But it was a nasty "hybrid" operation against E.U., by Erdogan!!

Kουραγιο αδερφε. Same here in Cyprus now, and I got to tell you, I'm resentful.

Κρατάμε γερά, αδέρφι!! Μόνο που θα βγούμε τετράπαχοι στην παραλία φέτος!!!! 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 (Translation: We are holding on!! But we will not be the fittest in the beach, next summer )

On topic, from the news I see here, New York seems to have it real bad. How's NH looking, D1?

Well NY State seems to think this is a video game and they were determined to get the highest score... 😲 well, as everyone probably knows now the USA has the most cases in the world with about 86000 and its climbing by the thousands everyday. Still not bad in NH where I live with maybe 300 cases, but it doesn't help that NYC is the most population dense area in the USA. They say hospitals are already maxed out and 911 service had 6000+ calls in one day which is the highest on record even exceeding 9-11 attacks. So its getting pretty serious over here, I will be going grocery shopping tonight so I will see the status of the stores. I been inside all week at home, came into work today (only one person on my floor) but its like a ghost town for the most part even in NH.

But our higher populated cities need to quit being stupid and mandate people stay in their homes unless you are performing a service that is needed by the people or infrastructure. People are still traveling everywhere, there is no restrictions. Yeah govt's are trying to put things in place and make punishments... but there is only so many things a govt can do without instituting marshal law, because the citizens do have the right to do what they want and a big portion of the usa citizens have guns so if someone is determined they will just do what they want.

Do I like self isolating myself... no really, its not a big deal because I live out in a small town so I guess I choose to live in isolation. But people need to think a little and do limit their human interactions to a minimum to hopefully slow this down. Yes, I understand the whole 1-2% death rate chance and people are like who cares that is a small amount. But if millions get infected you are looking at many thousands of people dying when maybe they didn't have too if people just thought about others instead of themselves.

Of course I am worried about the economy and jobs for all. And this stupid stimulus to the people is a mistake for a country that has the highest debt load in the world lets just create more debt and print money from nothing... the world as a whole is in trouble. And if the world don't start working together to solve it we will sink together. Yeah I am sure countries and/or people might take advantage of this crisis throughout the world but hopefully that can be contained. But inflating all of our currencies will make it even worst for the person without a job or money. So on one aspect I agree with Trump to just be cautious but tell everyone to go to work and that we need to accept the risk you could get sick. But if our societies don't get back to work they are going to fall apart and their will be more crime and poverty for all countries.

Shit, with have dumbass kids on youtube coughing and licking stuff in the grocery store and stating that have covid-19 and then the grocery has to throw away all that food because they cannot take the risk... just stupid idiot kids... we should jail them immediately. And they do it for laughs on social media. Our youth are not ready to make any sort of life changing decisions for themselves or us.

USA jumping in infections by the thousands everyday, luckily there hasn't been a huge amount of deaths yet... but NYC did have 100+ in one day. Its true we shouldn't panic and we need to still be civil to everyone... but how long will that last when people are hungry or can't find food. Shit its still cold where I am there will be no gardens still for another 2mos.

Will be a interesting April... I will quit ranting... but I have noticed that a lot of the countries their infection rates have been slowing... thats good 🙂

Nothing is going to be the same after this. Every country around the world will have to take a hard look at how their societies work, their culture and politics. How did it all contribute to the spreading of this terrible virus. Will there be strife, a recession or even a full on depression following this? Yes, all that and more could happen and it could cost even more lives in the long run than the virus itself if we don't change.

It's in that aftermath that we all have to realise we have to find a better way to organise ourselves, to live, to really make the world a better, fairer and safer place for all. The use of the dictates of the market to drive policies effecting every aspect of life just wont cut it in this new post Covid 19 world. A country isn't, as some would have you believe, a business, it's a country with needs far beyond what any business would consider necessary. It's undeniable this virus is a terrible thing that will take many more lives before it is done but, when it is over, we have to learn all the hard lessons it taught us, recognise all the mistakes we made and do better.

Following World War II many thought along similar lines and for a time everyone had the same goal to remake the world into a better place to make the sacrifice of all those who gave their lives in that war have meaning, but over the years since then that goal was cast aside, people barely concerned themselves with what was happening in the wider world anymore. We need to pick that goal up again and give a meaning to all those who have, and are yet to lose, their lives during this crisis. History will be our judge.

I do so wish I could agree, Geraldine, but the bitter old cynic within me shakes his weary head sorrowfully. They called WWI 'the war to end all wars', but before too long, it was business as usual. Those at the top, those with power at their fingertips, those with their snouts stuck deep in the trough, have little interest in change. All they're interested in is control! <sighs wistfully>

I think I'd like to go live on Andromeda Station...

Ultimately, it's the people themselves that give them that power. Just as it will be upto the people to decide if these folk still deserve to have it. Will they? That is a question only history will answer. If people do nothing then, quite simply, all this can and will happen again because those in power don't bother to plan effectively to counter such threats. They are, and will be again, too obsessed in pursuing their own ideologies and gain at the expense and endangerment of others. That's what they do, that's what they always do. We have to decide just what kind of world we want to live in and ask ourselves, is what we have now, what we want the world, our world, to be like after this? Take your pick!

I've said in the past there is but two paths open to us; for us as gaming and sci-fi fans on here at the SSC, it translates as it's either a "Fallout Future" or a "Star Trek Future".

Choose wisely folks!

It seems to me that too many of the people have become sheeple! They need to wake up, and soon!

Some degree of normality has returned to my local supermarket (and others, so I'm told), but out and about the town centre it's kinda eerie! Yes, I snuck out! I reckon a good proportion of those closed shops and businesses will never re-open.

In other news: faced with spiralling costs for its Space Launch System (SLS) and pressure to put American boots on the Moon by 2024, NASA is to return the Saturn V to flight. <grins> A good one!

I had to go resupply yesterday, and thank the Universe for its sense of humor when I got back into my car guess what my playlist was on!?

I pumped up the volume and drove back all windows open on an empty road, not a cloud in a perfect blue sky...

At the risk of seeming grim, I'm going to offer some thoughts and stats here, it may help you either protect yourselves, or the ones you love.

We know the virus is highly transmittable, and that those living in large urban centers are more at risk for contagion. But it is the ones that get infected that I want to touch up on, what's the most likely outcome if someone does get it.

The mortality rate by age group

80+ years old  14.8%
70-79 years old 8.0%
60-69 years old 3.6%
50-59 years old 1.3%
40-49 years old 0.4%
30-39 years old 0.2%
20-29 years old 0.2%
10-19 years old 0.2%

The mortality rate by pre-existing condition

Cardiovascular      13.2%
Diabetes                9.2%
Chronic respiratory 8.0%
Hypertension         8.4%
Cancer                  7.6%

no pre-existing conditions 0.9%

Based on the above then, you can pretty much determine your own risk, the risk to those you love, and perhaps decide the level of protection you require. Remember, this is the chances of death in case of infection, becoming infected in the first place is quite easy...

Aye, the Saturn V was a thing of beauty! Like Concorde, which I never got to fly on. <sobs>

[gallows humour] As for grim: if I multiply my age risk by my health risk, I get a 28.8% chance of death. [/gallows humour]

Guess I have good odds, might need them being in the USA...

I wonder if the press is working here because we seem to be rising in cases everyday... maybe the press should concentrate on preventive and positive news instead of negative 24/7. We went up over 20k cases in the last 24hrs. Least the grocery stores here are pretty well stocked, I think the bulk of people have finished their panic buying.... or maybe in the next few weeks folks will be out of money. Gonna be a tough few months for a lot of people.

Regardless of of the outcome of the virus people are going to suffer, we just cannot shutdown and everyone sit at home and think the world is on pause until all is better. Millions of small business owners are going to suffer big time, many of people laid-off are suffering right now. Never thought it would have been a virus that would change the world..... but least as a world we have the small chance of maybe fixing some things we have done wrong. I hope we can do things for the better for once. 😉

Sorry D1, whatever is in that video the only "truth" I'm sure of is that it will never come from Youtube / FB / whatever...
Too many political interlopers with their own interests and agendas roaming free in there, and not many if none with the average citizen at heart for sure 🤔

Very true @d-c-elington, I was mainly interested in all of the documents and messages found about some of those doctors. I doubt highly we will ever know because of China's lockdown on information getting out or key people disappearing. So I understand we have to speculate and take leaps on random info. I doubt highly this was a natural occurring virus... it has other known virus components in the covid-19 virus, I am pretty sure this was man made. This darn virus has literally changed our world, the death rate may be low when considering the whole world. But the whole world is suffering economically from this, so many people not working or lost their jobs. Not good, govt's cant just print money because inflation will come about soon after. Will definitely be an interesting next 12 months to see how this all pans out.

I hope everyone is okay out there in the world and no one has lost their employment. So far I am still working, have had a small cough but no other symptoms.

@sscadmin well I don't know about the engineering but I honestly can't see who is benefiting from the current crisis. Also I'm afraid that our current technology may have lured us into forgetting that we are still fundamentally "animals", and as such susceptible to infectious diseases.

About national debts I'll venture back to the "4X game" analogy. The criticality of such an event would depend on one thing: does your empire have the resources (stockpile or production) to feed its peons while they need to stay home? If the answer is "yes" you would just easily weather the storm and go on... The fact is our world does not currently suffer from any shortage of anything (at least the said "developed" countries but that's another issue). So I'd say that "printing money" is probably how our rulers feed us under the circumstances...

Fourth week of lockdown here (UK), and I'm already going stir-crazy! Another six months? Ouch! It's a glorious spring day out there, and I simply have to get some sunshine and fresh air, so I'll be sneaking out later.
