Rogue System http://www.roguesystemsim.com/

Rogue System is hardcore space combat flight sim with the aim of bringing the classic space combat game into the 21 century. With detailed simulation of ship systems and damage control.

At least that was the original intent as I believe the game may still be a hardcore simulation but may have moved to open sand box game play.

Hmm... I wonder which of these will actually be released with anywhere near the quality being promised?  I feel a growing sense of frustration that many exciting things are ever are on the horizon, but nothing ever really seems to appear (well, except for X Rebirth, and who could possibly have predicted what a disaster that would be?).

I have a little bit of optimism for the less ambitious ones (at least graphically, but of course graphics can be a lot of work) like Interstellaria, although I think the graphics in that one are a little TOO retro.  I have been following Wayfarer for a while, but the developers have been rather silent for a while, so I am no longer terribly optimistic.

I have played the demo of Skyjacker, and it definitely shows great promise.  In conjunction with many of the videos I have no doubt it is already a great game.  Unfortunately, they failed their Kickstarter, so I fear the developers may let the project evaporate.  On the bright side they DID get greenlit, so you never know, maybe we'll see a full release.  I love that Skyjacker has aliens which actually look ALIEN!  Game developers usually seem particularly bad at making aliens, this was an aspect of Star Citizen that I was EXTREMELY disappointed with.

The rest, sadly, at this point I'm extremely dubious about.

I think you have take this genre with a pinch of salt as to weather all the feature promised will make it into any of the games, it is after all being driven by the indie developers. Five years or so ago when SSC started most of the games which were available were just another version of Elite or Wing Commander most were made by the smaller PC developers and as a result they were not keen on taken any risks.

In the last two year their has been an explosion in this genre, that list only represents a fraction of what is out their or being worked on and of course not all of the games will get to the finish line. But what I fined really exciting and different from the late 90s early 2000 is that their is a real drive to do some thing different this time not just make the same thing over and over again with better graphics. Where this motivation has come from I have no idea, maybe it's a combination of things, better tools, the internet, Kickstarter or the feature creep of Star Citizen, who knows?.

I think it comes from the fact that most people are bored with playing the same generic games that big companies put out every year, usually just improving graphics if it's a series and adding a single new feature that they promise will revolutionise the genre … Indie developers might promise and hype a lot as well and not always deliver on the promise, but at least we try to make games that we ourselves want to play 🙂 and usually those are way more fun (imo)
