I wasn’t quite sure where to post this, but it may interest lovers of the C64 and Elite.

yup right place. This is really a nice mod that attaches to the floppy drive port to be able to play any C64 game you can get your hands on. Because the floppy’s and those big 1541 drives are hard to get a hold of these days this is a great idea. Granted you can use 3.5″ 880k drives with C64 as well, but its finding those as well.

Yup a handy bit of kit. <img src='http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_cool.gif’ class=’bbc_emoticon’ alt=’8-)’ /> Lots of projects like this on Amibay. It all started with the discovery that you could use CF Cards as hard drives. My Miggy 1200s for example, have them fitted and filled with 1000s of games, then SD cards started to be used. These days its possible to run a C64 with an SD reader that contains the entire back catalogue of games for the system! <img src='http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_eek.gif’ class=’bbc_emoticon’ alt=’’ /> Retro awesomeness.

This is what happens when a group of people get it into their heads not to let something die no matter it's age <img src='http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//wink3.gif’ class=’bbc_emoticon’ alt=’;)’ /> You can also get readers for Speccys and Atari STs too.

PS. The Speccy version of Elite was smoother! <img src='http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_razz.gif’ class=’bbc_emoticon’ alt=’:-P’ />

Not quite as smooth as the BBC, however!

Yes I agree, the Beeb version was the best of all the 8 bit versions, some say its the purest version of Elite ever <img src='http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//wink3.gif’ class=’bbc_emoticon’ alt=’;)’ />

Little doubt about that! I had a cute little joystick with my old, second-hand BBC and a 5.25 floppy drive!

Which one on the BBC was the best as IIRC there was about three or four different version released for the machine.

Just looking at the different conversion of the game I would go alone with Bell and say that the Nes version is pretty good considering its on a console.

Good question! I can’t even remember exactly which version I had, but it was the wireframe version. I wasn’t computer-savvy back then – I got my hands on a second-hand BBC with a little green line monitor (maybe 10″). Then I had a long period without any computer, then an old Apple II briefly, then eventually I got my first desktop PC (early ’90s), and PC Elite Plus. I hammered that game! It’d need an expert to decide which BBC version was best though, and an expert I most certainly ain’t!

      How about Ian Bell? <img src='http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//wink3.gif’ class=’bbc_emoticon’ alt=’;)’ /> http://www.iancgbell…e/bbc/index.htm Expert enough? <img src='http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_lol.gif’ class=’bbc_emoticon’ alt=’’ />

Also, added the original concept drawings to the Elite archive <img src='http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_cool.gif’ class=’bbc_emoticon’ alt=’8-)’ />

Heh, yeah hard to argue with Mr Bell, especially a cat-lover like him. I’ve spent hours poring over that website in the last few years.

He is actually a member of the Oolite forum, but has never posted which I can understand.

I know after seeing this great mod, I wish I never sold my C64 about 15yrs ago. I could I guess by another but they are expensive these days. I guess I will stick to emulators 🙂

Bell could do with updating his site.

Frontier running on the Raspberry Pi – I'd rather like one, as Elite runs on them too!

      Nice <img src='http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//cool.gif’ class=’bbc_emoticon’ alt=’’ /> been meaning to order one the Raspberry's

They should have used one of the other music options as that one sounds like it's being played on a Kazoo <img src='http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//laugh1.gif’ class=’bbc_emoticon’ alt=’’ />

That looks like an Atari port judging by the music

I say it was the PC version run on dosbox with that Kazoo them tune.

My reasoning is this, it cant be the PC version because the Frontier logo underneath the demo is grey and not green like the PC version, nether are there any textures evident and the music is Kazoo-a-like, to me that says Atari version. The Miggy version had better music as you already know Pinback, unless in porting it to the Pi somehow messed with the music? In that case it just might be the Miggy version. Or it might be related somehow to Tom Morton's GL port? If so, that was based on the Atari version too.

Anyways, whatever version it is, it's still very cool that the Pi is running it and at a good frame rate too! <img src='http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//cool.gif’ class=’bbc_emoticon’ alt=’’ />

You Frontier geek <img src='http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_lol.gif’ class=’bbc_emoticon’ alt=’’ /> but you are right it's not the PC version, never really looked at the ST version of the game, always thought it's music capabilities were better than that.
