I have posted about Drifter a couple times in the mobile forum but now there is a Kickstarter to fund a PC/Mac version of the game.
      http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cel … ading-game

Drifter has been in development for about 8 months now. I’m planning to release it for iOS later this year, but I’d also love to bring it to PC and Mac. That’s where Kickstarter comes in. With extra funding, not only will I be able to expand the game to those platforms, I’ll be able to make it even better in the process. I’ll bring in a 3D artist to help me create new assets and I’ll be able to focus on adding more features to the game.

A nice little update on Drifter arrived today.

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6zOIKi1_Cw&hd=1

      and some more details:

      Quote:

To that end, this is what I have planned for the upcoming early build:

      • Basic economy. Buy and sell goods and transfer them between systems.
      • 7 ships. A varying selection of ship hulls to choose from.
      • Ship systems. Customize ships with different weapons and support systems depending on how you want to play. The initial list of available ship gear will be relatively small and not well balanced.
      • NPCs. There will be NPCs milling about doing their NPC thing. Occasionally you will be attacked by space pirates.
      • Asteroid mining. You can mine asteroids for potentially valuable ore. Asteroid fields also occasionally contain space pirates looking to mine asteroid miners for potentially valuable ore.
      • Space pirates. Space pirates are jerks.

I'll have more notes when I finally release the build but the UI is incredibly rudimentary right now, basically just the bare minimum to expose the underlying systems in the game and allow someone to interact with them. The UI will be fully realized near the Final Beta push of the game.

Drifter is looking better and better every time I see it. Overall though it is looking great compared to a few months ago when the Kickstarter was going.

If I had to give some pros/cons on the video…

      Pros

      – I like the fact that objects (ore, containers) stay visible to the player

      – Missile effects were nice

      Cons

      – Noticed that player had to use his ship a lot to collide with the enemy to cause damage because targeting was hard because of speed of target and lack of lead reticle

      – Too many enemies (this might be on purpose for video), didn't have time to pickup loot

Missed out on the Kickstarter as I could not use it at the time and I don’t think they have a PayPal option.

      Hi!

I’ve honestly been meaning to post here since voxel asked me to earlier but I’ve been a teeeny bit side-tracked… That said, I have an account now!

I’m happy people seem to be excited about the game and I’m pretty excited that it’s getting closer and closer to a proper release. If anyone has any questions I’ll be glad to answer them of course πŸ™‚

As for people who missed out on the Kickstarter, you’re in luck! I’ll be taking pre-orders through the Humble Store sometime in May which will include beta access o/

Anyway, thanks again for your interest!

      Hi CGSColin

Welcome to SSC, I watched all of your videos on your site and none of them seem to cover the trading aspect of the game? Or if you could attain a different ship (other than the one in the videos)?

Also, I offer free forum area to all developers so if you want one you just have to say the word.

    • #88824
      Anonymous

Thanks! I’ll probably take you up on your offer around when I start the pre-orders (oh and I’ll be starting a Greenlight campaign at the same time :))

The trading is pretty straightforward so I really haven’t covered it in the early videos. A few of the people on the beta have put together some videos which show more here: http://celsiusgs.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=473 (It is pretty early in the beta so please excuse the rough edges!)

The game is going to feature 15-20 ships at launch, each with customizable equipment slots so people can tweak their favorite ship for different roles if they like. There are already 7 in the beta and 5 more being worked on right now.

Welcome to the forums CGSColin will be keeping an eye out the Humble release.

How big will the download be and do you have any plans for a disk version of the game.

    • #88826
      Anonymous

I’m not 100% sure of the final size because there are quite a few assets to be added but I’m thinking no more than 1 GB and probably closer to 500 MB.

As for a disc version, I will be mastering discs for the “Collector’s Edition” boxed set for Kickstarter backers but I don’t know how much demand there might be otherwise. Maybe I’ll have to run a poll to gauge interest when I’m closer to doing that πŸ™‚

Spent a brief couple of hours with the beta Drifter so a few quick thoughts about the game.

The game 2.5D much the same as Starpoint as you fly on a plane but it’s a lot easier to control your ship also has a Newtonian flight model, ie you accelerate your ship forward and you will keep flying in that direction until you turn around and accelerate in the other direction.

3D starmap of the Galaxy and the local system 😎 which can be rotated and zoomed in much the same as the old Frontier ones.

Like to see some more info on the maps maybe some overlays which would show the games empires boundaries and major trade routes.

Also it would nice at some point to be able to use the cursor keys to rotate and zoom on the maps as I could not zoom out (think I have a broken mouse wheel).

Menus on the stations did not realize at first that their was a lot more items if you scroll down, changing the scroll bar colour or just adding some up/down arrows would help.

Also displaying how much cash you have more prominently.

Did not have much a go at the combat yet just the odd pot shot at a couple of passing ships one of which took the bait and fired back, had a bit of shooting match with that one until it hit an asteroid and blew up.

Interesting bit on Gamasutra  from Collin Walsh, not so much about Drifter but about trying to get it green lighted on Steam.  http://www.gamasutra.com/blogs/ColinWalsh/20130724/196909/Steam_Greenlight_What_To_Expect.php Looks like they have to rack up some big yes vote to even get anywhere near a release on Steam.

Plan is for 0.3.1 tomorrow. It’s actually got some new features (addition of Afterburners and faster Slipstream) but I felt it wasn’t quite enough to warrant a minor version increase.

There will be a much shorter wait for 0.4.0 as well.

Making the AI in the game “afterburner aware” has been taking longer than expected but the results will be fun, I hope. I made them a little bit more intelligent about using their momentum to make attack runs instead of attempting to turn around slowly and fly away (thus losing all of their speed in the process). Certainly looks a bit cooler anyway:

      https://vine.co/v/h6mEOurQvl9

As for Humble yes, that’s where you’ll be able to get the game when it’s ready. I’ve also added a version check that pings the Drifter site to check and make sure you have the latest version, and if you don’t it’ll let you know. Hoping that’ll be useful πŸ™‚

Apologies for bringing up our Greenlight campaign again but we’re seriously only about 800 yes votes away from the Top 20 on Greenlight, which while not 100% a sure thing it’s still likely Drifter would get approved for Steam in the next round of approvals in a couple of weeks!

Just letting everyone know we’re now at #4 on Greenlight!

The latest batch of approvals came a week earlier than I was expecting (it seems like they’re approving new titles every 2 weeks now) so our jump in rank probably happened just after they started making the list for the last batch.

The good news is I’m fairly certain we’ll get approved when the next batch goes through in a week πŸ™‚

The game has been playable for ages but it’s just taking longer than expected to get it to where I’d like to be to call it 1.0. Various delays here and there along with it taking 6 annoying months to get through Greenlight have taken a bit of a toll. That said we’re still working hard at it and things are moving forward fairly well regardless πŸ™‚

The ships in Drifter do get pretty large: http://celsiusgs.com/drifter/images/screenshots/dev/shrike-vs-odyssey.jpg

However they are all directly controlled and there is no crew dynamic to speak of, at least at the moment. That said the game does range from small fighter type ships to larger and more ponderous cargo vessels but it’s possible that’s not really too far from the “fighter” dynamic you’re looking to move away from.

Yeah I hear ya. Unfortunately it’s almost a necessity these days if you’re actually selling games on PC because there are so many people out there that only get their games through Steam.

haha I appreciate the persistence and I’ll say that the idea of really big ships being added to Drifter is pretty interesting and not an impossibility, but it’d definitely be an “after 1.0” feature πŸ™‚

I guess it some thing to do with the linking of the accounts as when I press the steam button on the Humble page it takes me to a Steam log in page.

Other time that I have used Humble it has just given the key number which I can just copy over to Steam to activated the game.

Yeah Humble along with Valve in the last few months added a new system that requires you to hook your Steam account up to your Humble account in order to redeem keys. This was implemented to prevent groups from buying cheap Steam keys through Humble Bundles and re-selling them.

Note: Humble builds will be available as soon as they upload them on their end. I’m hoping that will be by tomorrow (Saturday) some time but regardless I will post an update once they are. Everyone that has gotten the game through Kickstarter or Humble should be able to get the game on Steam in the meantime if they’re itching to play icon_e_smile.gif

      Hey SSC!

After perhaps far too long Drifter 0.6.0 (code name “Narcissus”) has been released!

This is a very substantial update that includes a large number of improvements, additions, and bug fixes to the game.

As well, considering the under the hood changes I’ve taken the time to make in 0.6.0, I am working to avoid any more long development delays and get to actually completing Drifter some time before 2015 is out (hopefully much sooner than that of course). In fact, my current plan is to deliver many smaller updates with a turn around time of 2-3 weeks from here on out until the game is finished.

Some highlights of this update include:

      – Initial space station interiors

      – 5 new ships

      – New ship equipment icons

      – A large number of user interface improvements both under the hood and visually

      – Initial keyboard support for GUI interaction (with controller support coming soon)

For the full details, check the release notes page on the wiki: http://celsiusgs.com/drifter/wiki/Current_Build_and_Known_Bugs

Existing save games from 0.5.3 should still work with 0.6.0.

      Enjoy!

Drifter 0.6.1 is out on Humble and Steam!

The biggest change for 0.6.1 is the UI overhaul started in 0.6.0 is now nearly complete. Most of the UI in the game now supports keyboard and gamepad interaction. It’s not quite 100% but it should be pretty good for couch gaming at this point.

We’ve also updated and added a number of new item and equipment icons.

In addition to this there are a large number of UI improvements and bugfixes, you can get the full details in the release notes page on the wiki: http://celsiusgs.com/drifter/wiki/Current_Build_and_Known_Bugs

Existing save games from 0.6.0 should still work with 0.6.1.

      Hey again!

Just letting you all know that we’ve started a little thing we’re calling “The Year of Drifter”! Basically we really want to try and get Drifter done sooner rather than later and it feels like the end, while still a little ways off, is in sight. So for the rest of the year we’re going to push really hard to try and get the game done and celebrate that development along the way.

As part of the start of this we’ve started a little 17% off sale on the game which ends tomorrow, so there’s still a chance to get in on that if you’re interested: http://store.steampowered.com/app/259450

All I can say is that at about the same time that I backed both Kinetic Void and Drifter on kickstarter.  TBH Colin is the one that is continuing to fulfill what was offered, while Kinetic Void made a 3D modular ship builder and then more or less folded.

I know the troll guy states that he will continue working on it, but I have my doubts at whether or not he is capable unlike colin, and the troll guy burned through a great deal more monies to make a 3d modular ship building program that kinda works, along with simulating the vast emptiness of space. Well, he was a good talker, just not a good doer, which may now explain why he was at loose ends and proposed Kinetic Void…. we’ll see if he comes up with anything in the future, beyond the ugly mess that is the unfinished yet released kinetic void.

But enough with my digressing, back to drifter. Colin has done more than I expected of his project and it’s still going strong.

      Good job Colin!

Early access is a gamble same as Kickstarter and it is as much a double edged sword for the developer as well as the buyer.

      Hello again!

Just wanted to let folks know that Drifter 0.6.3 is out and 0.7.0 is coming soon!

      0.6.3.header.png

Featuring a number of quality of life improvements, new icon artwork, and a number of bug fixes you can get the details of whatÒ€ℒs new and fixed on the wiki: http://celsiusgs.com/drifter/wiki/Current_Build_and_Known_Bugs

      Drifter 0.7.0 and Beyond

Thank you for your continued patience as we work towards 0.7.0. Despite my attempts at trying to increase the frequency of updates we have fallen behind in that regard and I apologize for that. The good news is we have been able to focus on finalizing all of the design work for Drifter 1.0 over the last few months and I feel like thereÒ€ℒs finally a clear path for finishing the game.

Drifter 0.7.0 should be finalized in the next few weeks which will finally see the replacement of the placeholder planet textures with procedurally generated ones, the introduction of the Material Synthesis system, and the introduction of the frequently-hinted-at spatial anomalies which will add a new element of exploration to the game.

Once Drifter 0.7.0 is out, I feel like there are maybe 3 or 4 major updates left before we hit 1.0 and the game is finished. With the major design work out of the way most of what is left is implementation, and weÒ€ℒre going to push for a major update every 4 weeks. I realize itÒ€ℒs been difficult for us to maintain a consistent schedule but I really want to get the game to 1.0 and properly released and the only way to do this is to keep pushing for it.

That said, Drifter 1.0 is not going to mean the end of development on the game because thereÒ€ℒs still a lot of things IÒ€ℒm hoping to add to the game post-release but I feel like this is a necessary step and itÒ€ℒs been a long time coming.

In the meantime, enjoy some concept art Sven has been working on for three new station facilities weÒ€ℒre adding leading up to 1.0!

Nice update Colin and great art assets for the game.

0.7.0 seems like it is going to be a great feature release and milestone for you…. almost there. So is it safe to say we might see 1.0 sometime in the summer?

Just an odd question, do you plan on having time sensitive or perishable goods in the market? So maybe depending on how quickly you get the good to market you could make a huge payday.

I’m actually attempting to get 1.0 out before the summer but that’s probably a safe assumption for the moment πŸ™‚

As for perishable goods, there currently aren’t any plans for that but it’s an interesting idea. At the very least there are/will be missions that have time-sensitive elements but I’ll give the trade good thing some thought too!

We’re still alive and plugging away! I’m not too pleased with how uneven progress has been in the last year or so but this is the first public step in attempting to fix things and move forward.

      0.6.4.header.png

Drifter 0.7.0 is still in the works but as a part of restructuring my development process we’re moving to weekly builds starting today. Old habits are hard to break but the way I was working on the game previously was just not working out and it took me some time to take stock and try and fix things. That said hopefully this will help keep development from stalling out again and also it will mean lots of visible progress/less radio silence. Also we’ll be able to address bugs more quickly and we’ll be doing constant mid-stream polish as we go.

Builds should be available on Humble and on Steam!

That said, the full details as to what’s new and fixed in 0.6.4 are listed below and are also over on the wiki: http://celsiusgs.com/drifter/wiki/Current_Build_and_Known_Bugs

Has Drifter stalled in its development? There has been no Steam updates since July 2017…

Game is sitting at version 0.8.3, so I hope this game starts seeing some updates. The whole reason I haven’t purchased this game yet is because I have been waiting for it to leave early access or least hit beta.
