Some exciting news about plans for Evohron have come out over Christmas.

Now this is the direction more games should be going in 😎 😎 😀

    TERRAIN WALKERS

I’ve wanted to create a mechanized walker combat warfare game for a long time, going on three decades now in fact. I’ve written several prototype game engines over that time, but never really took my ideas beyond the concept stage. This is about to change with the introduction of a new gameplay element to Evochron. In addition to the planet system, I’ve also be developing a new ‘terrain walker’ prototype which would allow players to get out of their ship and explore the surface of a planet ‘on foot’. The walker would protect the pilot from the harsh conditions of a planet while giving them the mobility and freedom to travel on the ground to explore, fight, or harvest at close range. Once implemented, this could open up a wide variety of new gameplay options and features to the game. I already have a prototype walker design with full animation up and running using the new terrain engine and results are successful so far, including proper walker alignment to any position on the planet and low additional resource load. Terrain walkers even have jump jets for short flight bursts. The opportunities this opens for new contract types and gameplay options are extensive and this is something I am working on to include as part of the expansion. Here is a screenshot of how this looks in prototype form:

The new walker functionality and player movement on the planet will be something special and really open up gameplay for Evochron.

    Quote:

Q – Will terrain walkers be able to engage ships in combat?

A – Yes. Terrain walkers will be lightly armed and generally best used against other walkers, but they will be able to fire back at any ships that attempt to hit them from the sky.

Q – Will the terrain walker mode be ‘sharded’ or ‘instanced’ from ship gameplay, separating walker players from spacecraft players?

A – No. This would go against one of the primary design objectives of Evochron… the seamless universe. Terrain walkers will play in the same game universe as ships and they’ll be able to see and interact with each other.

    GOD DAMN !!!

This sounds like a dream come true for any real space sim fan out there. First thing that came into my mind after reading this was “EVE Online but better”.

    Sweet.

I can’t wait for that video footage, I will be interested to see how much we can really do on the planets.

That’s what’s will make it or break it.

Will it be just a simple 3rd person shooter or will there be more how will the suit interaction with the environments.

Like the oceans, lakes and river be handled and how will they do any cities, or colony outpost. ❓

I've been on the fence about buying this one (Evochron Merc). After research and playing the demo (teaser), I'm about ready to pull the trigger. This development sure helps. I'm an old retired Mechwarrior guy. I played that game to point of developing a form of carpal tunnel many years ago.

this could really open up a great world of fun … the last post was Jan '12, has there been any other news?

I know the developer has been working on some revised graphics lately, not sure if we will see that in a patch or in the next Evochron game? But the only other release to come out after Mercenary was Arvoch Alliance.

It's pretty cheap to buy, works on most PCs (I have an 2007 iMAC with bootcamp and it even works on that!)… It's a pretty fun game and the online community is very friendly in helping you fight the steep learning curve for combat. It's the best looking seamless planetary landing – actually I think the only – commercial game out there. I give it an 80% awesome rating even without this planned upgrade, I'd give a higher rate if the gas gaints were a larger scale than the rocky planets… when I discovered they were all the same size I kind of got disappointed.. but that's a small niggle for an otherwise very well made game at a reasonable price.

    Jump in.

I pulled the trigger and got it. So for weeks I'll be playing through all the fun stuff. The development pages on Starwraith's site have a lot of verbage on future plans. If only half of what is posted comes to fruition it will be an awesome space sim.

    I'm jumpin

Oh my god. What a wonderful video. If the game would be only just as accessible as Freelancer was but it feels more like a toned down X game.

I know why I payed for this game twice already, such a pity I don't find the time to get into it. <img src='http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//sad.gif’ class=’bbc_emoticon’ alt=’:(‘ />

That's true, even with the available mods it doesn't feel very comfortable.

    Hello all

Before I take the plunge and purchase is there actual exploration in the game… ie

if I travel to a new area / system can I find new people to trade with, stuff that makes me cooler, or at least an updated star map that I contributed to, as in for eg. elite?

Please say so everything else looks amazing…
