Thanks, Yes otherwise one may ask which oxp is it and then I have to look it up. Thats quite difficult nowadays with Oolite with hundreds of oxp’s.

But I can really recommend that new escort oxp. Another new way to bring variation to an already excellent game.

Ain’t it just! That ship is part of a grand mission OXP that hopefully will get finished and be released… one fine day! Not my work, I hasten to add. I’m just a test pilot (the Chuck Yaeger of the Ooniverse… heh!), and I get to play with some very tasty stuff, some of which never makes general release. Taking part in fleet actions in interstellar space with a ship like that on your side is rather good fun (the player gets a very tasty ship to fly as a reward), and if the OXP is ever completed, it will be a cracker!

I don’t think there has ever been a total conversion of Oolite, although there are several shipset OXPs from other universes. Not really my thing though, as I prefer a consistent Elite-style universe for gameplay.

This fugitive was having a right old tussle with a couple of GalCop Vipers when I came along, and doing quite well:

Then a bounty-hunter in a Fer-de-Lance started on him as well, and the poor sod got confused and froze for a second:

NumericHUDv3 #3 by CommonSenseOTB, on Flickr

The real improvement in NumericHUDv3 comes from keeping the normal readouts just barely visible and not distracting while making them glow/pulse a bright color to draw your attention to the gauges that need to be monitored closely. This concept works quite nicely, particularily during combat when your attention is focused on killing or being killed rather than the gauges and NumericHUDv3 is now quite close to what I had originally envisioned for a numeric hud display when I first set out to make version 1 over 10 months ago. In the near future there will be improvements due to new oxp capabilities.

Well, it wouldn’t be an Elite game if it was fair! 😈 The unfairness of it at times is one of the best features of the Elite series and any re-make should include that too. Small fishies should stay away from big sharks! 😆

Anyways snagged it off the dev’s site, but will need to put some serious time into Oolite as my commander is broke and flying a piece of junk at the moment 😳

That is the essence of a great game – the player should never become invincible. The game should always be able to surprise the player, and give them a right royal slappin’ occasionly. Too many glossy, slick commercial games miss these points, to their detriment.

Forget the Sidewinder – get yourself a Cobra III, the finest all-round starship in the Eight!

Cobbies are good ships, no arguments there, but Sidies are special to me, in FE2 I took one from one end of a galaxy to the other, it was my “retirement” ship after a long military career in the Fed Navy 🙂 The scrapes I got involved in with that little ship still make me smile 😎

Aye, one does become attached to certain ships. My first Oolite Cobra III, Clear Air Turbulence, was a fine ship and like Commander Cody, the name dates back to the BBC days. When it was time to change to Rolling Thunder, I gave the CAT a real good send-off – I drove her hard straight into a sun, ejected at the very last second, and watched her burn from the escape pod!

Immersed? Moi? I should bloody-well say so!

Talking about Clear Air Turbulence, this is the album cover I took the name from. I love the artwork of Chris Foss – all those sci-fi covers he created, with fantastical spaceships. Brilliant! I wonder if Iain Banks also liked that album – he obviously liked the name?

No screenshot today – have a rhyme instead:

Pulled out of Diriis late one night

The moon and stars were shining bright

Had me a hold full of megaweed

And I knew a planet that had the need

I hit the boost, headed for the leap

Once in the tube, I’d get some sleep

But those damn Vipers came out to play

Left me wondering if I’d get away

As the clock ran down, I thought I could make it

If only my battered shields could take it

But as the count hit one, I took a heavy blow

A bloody Interceptor puttin’ on a show

Got knocked aside as the wormhole gaped

        Caused a mis-jump, but hey, I’d escaped

Next thing I know, there’s bugs to fight

And breakers to blow… oh what a sight

I took them down, all warships five

Badly damaged, but I’m still alive

Blew the breakers, one, two, three

Damn well lost one… oh stupid me

A frantic search of interstellar space

Left me thinking that I’d lost the race

At last I checked the short range chart

And saw a sight that cheered my heart

Right next to me, within a light year

Zaquesso loomed, and brought good cheer

I had just enough fuel, with none to spare

And whooping wildly, I jumped out of there

Next thing I know, I’m skimming the sun

Then off to Artear… man, what a run

I torused in and docked at speed

Before them Vipers could draw a bead

I sold my weed for a princely sum

Then hit the bar, and ordered rum

Got thoroughly drunk… could barely stand

But what the heck, I’d made three grand!

Not much, you can fly though it safely at the moment, although discussions are happening on the Oolite BB about giving low damage. At the moment its just a 2D texture, and doesn't resolve into separate moonlets. See this screenshot, taken from up close:

That'll be up to the devs – but seeing as cim (who made the demo OXP) is a dev, it is on the cards. Mind you, they do try to keep the core game as straightforward as possible (which is commendable), so it may well be left as an OXP option only (waiting to be improved upon). At present, the demo only adds rings to two systems per chart, so I had to finagle the numbers/textures to get a be-ringed gas giant… at first, I had a be-ringed blue ocean world (which also looked pretty cool).

Thinking about it – I'd guess it'll remain an OXP option only.

I suppose (to an Elite purest) having planetary rings in Oolite would take it dangerously close to Elite 2 territory as they were not present in the first Elite. I know one thing though (not being an Elite purest myself), I will gladly add them if the oxp is finished <img src='http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_e_smile.gif’ class=’bbc_emoticon’ alt=’:)’ />

Heh… I am somewhat of an Elite purist myself, and you'd really need gas giants for rings – in core Oolite there is only the one rocky planet per system. However, I'd consider planetary rings to be eye-candy (as are multiple planets per system… ie System Redux), so I'm with you there. I'll keep the demo in my trunk set-up, and definitely use it when the next stable version is released. Man, scooting through those rings on injectors is way too much fun!

When I went back to return the favor I was treated to a demonstration of GalCop citizen's tax credits at work… this Viper pilot made a mockery of me.

      taxpayersmoney.png

I like the first shot a lot because it reminds me of a cover from some old sci fi pulp magazine " highly outrageous tales" or some such.

The second shot was just pausing at lucky moment, I happened to be testing the features (custom views, grabbing screens etc) and it was a legit dogfight, I didn't even know he'd dodged until I paused, I wanted to get a screen of a hit!

It certainly makes GalCop pilots look uncharacteristically skilled. >.>

Heh.. it looks worse than it is.. the NumericHUD fades into the background, except when critical info needs to be displayed. The on-screen messages (BGS or Talkative Compass, I don't recall which) just looks a little crowded because the shot was taken in TAF=0.06 mode. In real-time they don't stay there long at all.

    • #85168

Nah – not for me, all that clutter! In reality, I'm flying a P51 Mustang, with nothing but the basic pulse-laser crosshairs and an instrument panel (not even that, at times – it's cool flying without any hud at all).

I kinda like elements of the numeric HUD, speed I like expressed as a number for example.

Also if all those numbers are running and constantly changing the HUD kind of has this nice 'augmented vision' aspect to it as if the data is being fed directly to the pilots visual cortex.

Heh… I've been flying a Cobra Mk III (in one format or another) for a quarter of a century, on and off. But a multi-player game – which I'm not a fan of at all [snips long anecdote] – would be very different for me indeed, especially with any flavour of Newtonian flight. But given equal ships and flight controls (quality 'sticks etc)… well, who can tell!

      'SuperbatPrime' wrote:

I will be interested to see how DB handles that, but I'll probably play in single-player mode (if possible). I reckon that quite a few players who think themselves Top Guns would come down a peg or two, as it happens… heh.

    • #85178

      Very true.

Generally I prefer single player too (probably for similar reasons), but to test ones skill against another human can be cool, just to see if you are as good as you think (or in my case, to confirm it… hah! <img src='http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_razz.gif’ class=’bbc_emoticon’ alt=’:P’ /> )

…and Elite: Dangerous better have single player, otherwise it's gonna be just another mmo (albeit probably a very good one) and that will severly limit it's options imo.

Also getting ganked by some 12 year old in an Asp (with a cash shop military laser, oh please no) when you're trying to mine asteroids will probably get old quickly.

I'm hoping for small scale mp, like private server style where you have a small group who are all cool.

On a totally unrelated note, do you think it would be ok to use KZ999's rank badges?

I was reading the BB and it seems he's not about, I'd like to use the ratings badges on my HUD or something similar, but I don't want to annoy anyone if they start popping up in my screenshots.

See my sig – that's KZ's Elite rank badge from Rolling Thunder's dashboard (which has appeared in quite a few pics). Had it for yarons! Go right ahead and slap one on your personal hud! If it was for OXP use – that would probably be cool too, but I think courtesy would require at least a PM to KZ.

Personal only, I'm making a transponder screen for my Deepspace HUD (great modular design, easy to clone and add new screens) to contain legal stats, elite ranking (distinctly average atm lol) etc.

I'm making a few in advance so I can just switch them in as things change.

tbh it's not something I'm actively pursuing but the count just seems to keep rising, if foolish pirates (or cops) get in the way of a "legitimate businessman" like myself then I must defend myself.

…and if said Pirate decides to run, I must pursue until there is nothing left of him but scrap, for the greater good of the galaxy you understand.

…and if someone offers me credits to hunt down and destroy certain individuals like some unrelenting hammer of vengeance, well it's a poor businessman that doesn't take a good deal when he sees it.

I don't want to be killing these guys (honestly, I swear), but I have no choice, it's a hard life out in the black and I have a ship's cat to feed.

Don't know. There are certain things different. But I don't know if your problem about not starting is solved. You can always try. Did you raise the question to Cim?

One thing I like abut 1.77 trunk is that it's faster. Cim enhanced the performance in calculations of the space dust. And that makes this version feeling a lot smoother. (at least on my machine (macbook pro 2011)).

Edited to add. The laser FX is now fantastic. The Engine FX is in the works. I like it so far but I think it could be a little bit better. But as I understand that is being worked on.

I did post about it on the BB's Progress thread… which is why I'm hiding out here, but I had to be honest.

Now the lasers on the other hand are unbelievably good, just as good as many AAA games.

Ha! The Devs tend to avoid fixed 'dates' for upcoming releases (well, among themselves they no doubt have a timeline/plan). But somehow, I think there may be a release due in time for winterfest (December 16th resonates) – we shall see! RetroHUD has always been my favorite. I really wanted something that reminded me of a the original Elite’s HUD. However, none of the other huds really do that. Once I found the Retro HUD I was utterly sold. I LOVED it.

Smiv’s shipset first came to me when I was on my rather pitiful laptop. I couldn’t run Griff’s, and it just sort of grew on me. Even now that I CAN run Griff’s, I just prefer the style and look of Smiv’s. Its more… cartoony? for lack of a better term? I reminds me of Frontier, which is how I envision the Elite universe, and judging from the latest Elite Dangerous movie, DB has a similair idea. Griff’s ships are pretty, but they just don’t immerse me. Something about those old school shapes….

@SolCommand My low resolution doesn’t do his excellent models justice. Griff is a truly talented artist. His attention to every little detail is just astounding.

What OXPs should we use, to get these results?

You can’t… this is the experimental Dev build, and no OXPs are involved (apart from eye-candy/hud). This will eventually become part of Oolite 1.8 (the next stable build)… but not for a while yet. You can have Thargoid warships that look like that (slightly better, in fact) now though – see this page. Then you could venture into interstellar space, but you’ll not find nearly so many warships – but don’t get stuck there.

So, to sum this up, Griff’s shipset is included built-in from the next versions onward, replacing the vanilla models? I am confused.

    • #85255
      CodyCody
      Participant

From Oolite 1.8 onwards, a shaderless version of Griff’s shipset (including stations and hermits) will become the vanilla shipset.

It’s mostly the work of CaptSolo, who created the unshadered set from Griff’s originals – and they look pretty good too.

Good lord Cody. That was some battle. 😎

I’m happy to share some screenshots out to the Development version 1.79 (which leads eventually to 1.8 like Cody mentioned) in combination with Wildebloods’ Distant Suns Galaxy 108.oxp which you can find here: http://aegidian.org/bb/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=12986.

Cool pics, Pag! I’m still using Kaks’ Farsun OXP – those above are a bit too colourful for me.

Yes. For me that is terrific. I like the renaming too. And I like the colors + corona modification. At a planet with heavy solar activity in the description you’ll see a large corona.

Speed King – from the album Deep Purple in Rock, which was the best line-up, and had the classic Child in Time on it.
