      wow looks awesome

      a good idea would be if all the developers that are making indie games like this and pioneer would join to make one game 🙂

      the pros would be more faster development and a ton of ideas and features.

      the only cons would be pride but I doubt many developers has this since they do this for love of the genre.

      Very smooth effects and planet transitions. The limnal drive is nice, think the only thing you need is some way to tell which planets/stars you are near so you can navigate to them and not use line-of-sight.

      Looks like they getting ready for a playable demo of the game http://elliptic-games.com/?p=160

      I’ve been working hard on enemy AI / ship combat over the past few weeks. Getting closer to a playable build that I can release out into the world comfortably. But I’ve also been trying, in my spare moments, to finish up creating all of the necessary planets and asteriods for the game. As usual, it’s a bigger job than I could have anticipated!

      The surface mapping looks great but he does need to work on the FX side of the game. No offence but flames are not blocks of color. This can also be seen in the smoke trails of the missiles and ships. Hopefully he will work on that aspect in the near future. Plus a better looking ship wouldn’t hurt, there are plenty of free ones available. Not dissing his work, just some areas he needs to work on.

      Hey folks! I know it’s been a while since the last update- I’ve been crunching hard to get Rodina out soon. Enjoy some shots of our final planet Jarilo, combat, and for the first time, your ship’s interior! Remember that you can customize the ships layout all you want- rooms, furniture, machinery: it’s all up to you!

      Things are really coming together. I’m hoping to release Rodina to the world sometime in the next few months. Until then- thanks for sticking with me!

      Couple of bits of news from Rodina as they are getting ready for the games release

      1 the site has been updated http://elliptic-games.com/?p=232

      and two PC Gamer has a review of the game  http://www.pcgamer.com/previews/rodina-interview/

      Starting to sound very similar to notchs abandon game. 😎

      Customisation is another of Rodina’s big idea, and it goes far beyond just the insides of a player’s ship. Brendan plans to add programmable in-ship computers in a later update. “When hacking is unveiled in a future update, all of the computers in the game will be actual virtual machines running Lua code – just like the rest of the game – and which the player can hack and recode at will. So, for example, there is a Navigation Computer which defines how the player’s controls affects ship movement. If the player so chooses, they can hack this computer and change the ship controls to something preferable. They might choose to program an auto-targeting module, or even add something like autopilot. If they create something cool, then naturally they will be able to share that creation with others.

      Big news for Rodina as it is to be released on December 13 http://elliptic-games.com/?p=307 :drinks:

      Today, I couldn’t be happier to announce that I intend to begin selling Rodina, my indie space exploration game, on December 13th.

      Rodina has been a labor of love for about two years, but it’s been brewing in my mind for much longer than that. Playing games like Star Fox and Super Metroid on the SNES 20 years ago, I would daydream about leaving the confines of the game behind and taking Samus’s gunship, or Fox’s Arwing, on my own adventures. Later, as I threw myself into the Elder Scrolls series, I would wonder what it would be like to have a first person exploration game set out in space.

      Today, I’m so proud to confirm that I’m well on the path to realizing those daydreams, both for myself and for the many others who I am confident share them.

      Is Rodina finished? No- in two senses. First, I haven’t accomplished everything I want to accomplish with it yet. There’s a solid base- a huge solar system with massive procedural planets, complete seamless freedom, fun ship combat and a developed background story. But there’s lots more work to be done before Rodina can deliver an RPG-like experience with interesting characters and emergent gameplay.

      Second, Rodina may never be “finished”. My hope is to keep developing it over time, adding features and fulfilling requests. I look to the fans to help its on its journey, whether by buying the game, providing valuable feedback about where you would like to see it go, or by creating mods that extend the game with your own creative vision.

      Still, I couldn’t be more proud of the work I’ve done. I’m not sure that there’s anything else really quite like it, and I’m very anxious to share it with you.

      For those of you who have been waiting a VERY long time since my initial announcement in April 2012, thank you for your patience. It won’t be long now!

      See you on December 13th!

      2 days off the release and not much info about it, looking through the twitter feed I gather that the base price is about $15.00 although you can pay less. The first release will only contain one system with 4 large planets and asteroids and no word on what size the download will be.

      At last some one is asking some question about it on Reddit http://www.reddit.com/r/Rodina/comments/1smgqq/why_cant_i_find_out_anything_about_this_game/

       and the answer to the price structure of the game.

      Not yet. I should really do that. Here’s the plan:

      < $15: The current version of the game

      $15: All future updates

      $25: Voting rights on what kinds of features I work on next

      $50: Thank you in the credits

      $100: Special Thank You on Elliptic’s web site, all future games I ever make for free

      $250 (“El Presidente”): “Executive Producer” credit in all games Elliptic ever makes. I’ll hang your picture up in the office in perpituity. And I’ll take you to lunch if you’re ever in Portland, OR.

      Their also looks to be a time limited demo of the game as well.

      Well I am patching every day and Desura is slow to update…I am going to be glad if the majority of people buy it from gamers gate. As soon as someone reports a bug, next hour its fixed if that long.

      I have uploaded a version now to Desura for 2 days which fixes critical issues with gameplay….not live yet. GG makes the patches live instantly.

      I would host the patches myself if I could.

      I just have a few questions re Rodina.

      Just got the demo…looks great. Just have a few quick questions.

      1. Is the game DRM free ? Ie once I purchase I get a serial code and I can put it on multiple computers or is it locked to 1 computer etc ?

      2. I see it is diret download which is my preferance ie no third party downloaders forcing updates etc will it remain like this or at least will the direct download option always be available ?

      Thanks in advance.

      You probably going to need to post on Riddit http://www.reddit.com/r/Rodina to get any answers as he has not set up his own forums yet.

      Although the demo is the full game and seems to be DRM free, you just buy a key to unlock features and be eligible for the updates.

      Had a quick play around with the demo last night and only had one crash.

      Ship interior is huge compared to the outside.

      Very dark on the asteroid you start on, like the low gravity.

      Music is very atmospheric.

      Liminal drive is very uncontrollable.

      Not seen the planets yet or any combat but all in all a very impressive start, reminds me of how Ad Astra started with just one solar system, going to be interesting to see where this goes.

      You never know he might show up at some point but I would expect that he is rather busy at the moment.

      Bought the game and after a bit of fiddle around with the key I have unlocked it, still not made it to any of the planets but have got to another asteroid where I spied some crosses (more goodies to collect)and red dots and as I got closer to it,I was in for a surprise when the red dots started moving and then firing at me.

      Took out one of the ships with the missiles but the other one got me and after a reload their appeared to be only one ship this time which met a quick end, after a bumpy landing on the asteroid  I was unable to find the crosses?,but I did find a blazing wreak of the a ship might have been the one I blow up in orbit.

      Update from the site http://elliptic-games.com/?p=317

      Hey folks! So a lot of people have downloaded the game and I’m getting lots of valuable feedback. Many people are not able to run the game. There are a couple of crashes that lots of people are experiencing. I’m sorry to everyone that isn’t able to run the demo. I’m looking into these issues now and hopefully we’ll be able to get past these birthing pains soon.

      In the meantime, please be patient and for goodness sake, don’t buy the game until you try the demo!

      If you have bought the game and it doesn’t run for you, feel free to email me at brendan@elliptic-games.com with your payment info and I’ll be happy to issue a refund.

      To those who are able to play the game- I hope you enjoy it and I’m paying close attention to your feedback as well!

      Thanks for your patience!

      Only one crash here too, trying to walk around while in limnal drive.

      I can’t figure out how to get stuff like upgrades, did I miss that memo or what?

      Also, can I completely redesign the ship or is it one shape only?

      EDIT: Can I make it brighter somehow (and going next to a star with my flying skills doesn’t count)

      I had a write error/trace error while saving as well so I’m hesitant to load that save up.

      Is it possible to share designs?

    • #87858
      PinbackPinback
      Administrator

      Upgrades can found on asteroids if you are playing the story mode along with ammo and data sticks, one thing I would suggest is going into the options and turning down the combat difficulty as you will be dead in seconds if you encounter more than one ship.You can reread the messages in the comms station to the right of the bridge or by using the scanner in front of the pilots seat.

      Also noticed the save game not working in the free flight game although it works fine in story mode.

      Couple of more things I would like to see are an altitude meter and a speed meter and lights, can’t see anything on the dark side.

      Got near one the planets in free mode last night looks really big but was unable to land as I kept bouncing off the atmosphere or being told my angle was too steep with accompanying re entry flames.

      Looks like their is a patch on the way as well.

      Update from the site.

      Hi everyone, it’s been a crazy few days since Rodina was released! Thanks for all your support. I wanted to give an update on what’s going on:

      TRY THE DEMO!

      First of all, I want to say- please try the demo! It seems that people either can’t run the game, or they are having some fun with it. Definitely try the demo before buying.

      STABILITY

      Most important is getting the game running for people. I think I have a fix related to DirectX initialization that will hopefully address maybe 50% of the crashes we’re seeing. I was hoping it would fix everyone’s issues but unfortunately not.

      This fix is for the error where it says “Assert- Line 88 of EGRenderer.cpp” or something like that. It’s not necessarily for cases where you get an anonymous crash with no specific error (although it may fix a small handful of those)

      For those still experiencing crashes on load, I am going to also try to add some better error logging to the game so that we can better diagnose these issues and get them fixed. More instructions forthcoming.

      MIN SPECS

      Now that the game is in the hands of more people I’m getting a feel for min specs:

      Minimum to run the game:

      * Graphics Card with 512MB VRAM

      * Dual Core Processor

      * Windows Vista / DirectX 10

      Recommended for high performance:

      * Graphics Card with 1024MB VRAM

      * Quad-Core processor

      As you can see, the game requires high resources even though it’s not exactly Crysis. This is one of the downsides of trying to do a 3D game with some limit-pushing features with only one person on the team. Try the Demo!

      REFUNDS

      If you have bought the game and it isn’t working for you, please email me at brendan@elliptic-games.com if you would like a refund. Please don’t be shy. I’m not comfortable accepting your money until you have a working product.

      FEEDBACK / BUGS

      I’m also hoping to address other non-crashing bugs in an update soon, including things like: Making the Limnal Drive easier to control, increasing the mouse sensitivity, adding inverted mouse controls, etc. Trying to get as many of these in as possible.

      Please feel free to join the discussion on Twitter andn Reddit to give feedback on your experiences.

      And the demo has been updated http://elliptic-games.com/

      Here it is folks! There is a new build of the game! It’s stored in the same place as the old link so feel free to head to the download page to grab it! You can also download it in ZIP form if you prefer. The prerequisites are included within the ZIP.

      This update fixes some major crashes people were having (Including the assert message about line 88 of EGRenderer.cpp) as well as numerous gamebreaking bugs, and many usability issues people were clamoring for. Check out the readme here.

      I’m confident that this build, along with the workarounds described below, should clear up many of the issues people have been having. Please let me know if you still have trouble with the game!

      IMPORTANT KNOWN ISSUES

      NON-ENGLISH LOCALE

      Users in a non-English Locale may experience a crash upon loading Rodina.

      If you are affected by this issue, the workaround is to change your Locale / Regional Settings to English / USA.

      I’m sorry about this and I will be debugging this issue shortly. It would be helpful if those who experience this problem email me to let me know- I would love to test a build on you when I have a potential fix!

      PLAYER LOADING IN BAD POSITION ON ASTEROIDS

      Loading breaks on some asteroids. Some users report loading into midair, or loading inside the walls of their ship

      Workaround: Use the “Fix Player” button on the pause menu. This will put the player back into the ship.

      NEW: SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

      Feedback from players has allowed me to establish a set of minimum requirements. Thank you to everyone.

      Minimum:

      * Graphics Card with 512MB VRAM

      * Dual Core Processor

      * Windows Vista / DirectX 10

      Recommended:

      * Graphics Card with 1024MB VRAM

      * Quad-Core processor

      Problem Areas:

      * Some users have reported bad performance with Intel video cards

      If you feel you have information that can help flesh out this list- please send to me! After all, I can only test on ONE computer so I need your help! 🙂

      MOST IMPORTANTLY

      This build would not have been possible without your help!!! I received DOZENS of helpful emails and worked with many people willing to try out test builds in order to fix the problems that were occurring. Many people gave valuable feedback on gameplay. I learned some things from the Let’s Play videos that have been released. There are too many of you to thank individually so just let me say thank you to my customers and potential customers in general! We wouldn’t be here now without you!

      As always, if you experience problems with this build, let me know!

      Just got this and I must say what a lot of fun!

      Space combat is very cleverly designed to make it feel like its got newtonion physics but its just a bit less hardcore. Its very satisfying swooping around the enemy changing speeds trying to dodge numerous missiles. Planets are very nice looking at ground level too.

      Only problem I’ve had so far is an error when I tried to save(managed to save 20 or so times ok before it happened the first time though)

      Looking forward to seeing where they take the game.

      I think we are the tester although I think he has made it clear that the game is a very early Alpha, at least that my understanding of it.

      Any luck in getting it to work CaptainKal.

      I see some one is working on a mod to change the players ship, I like to see some landing gear added although with the bouncy landings I have ended upside down on more than one occasion or rolling down a hill. :haha:

      I picked up the game yesterday and I’ve played several hours of Rodina: Excellent game. Needs a bit of polishing but I realy love this little game. Great gameplay, combat, and overall feel. The writing and music are quite good. I know what I’ll be doing most of this holiday season!

      I agree with the landing gear and spotlight features! Would be a huge help.

      and why for pete’s sake are my bullets so crazily scattered when I shoot. I kind of need that buckshot approach right now I’m so noobish at combat, but I’m guessing it gets better with weapon upgrades….

      Found the buckshot bullets a bit strange at first but I have grown to like it now reminds me of BSG.

      Loads of missiles now, and a thing called ring fire I haven’t shot yet. I’m thinking it has something to do with Mexican food?

      Same here. Although using the ship as a rocket powered sledge, can be fun!!! :biggrin:  :biggrin:

      I had some crashes, while on planet approach/descent. And corrapted savegames. But the game is fun.

      Been watching this thread on Reddit http://www.reddit.com/r/Rodina/comments/1t4gm0/first_modded_ship/ it’s says that their is a Blender scrip for exporting models for use in Rodina, may have to download Blender again.

      I have been playing Rodina pretty much non stop since I purchased it. I can’t stop playing this great game. I’ve finally ‘mastered’ combat and all the weapons at my disposal (missiles are indeed great fun to let fly). I finally figured out how to re-enter atmo without burning up or crashing, and get on planet surfaces. The planets and asteroids look great, as long as I’m not on the night side. I really want a flashlight or floodlights for those night landings. Good thing the ship is tough and doesn’t mind a fair bit of sliding around on rough rocky slopes, lol.

      The four gear clutch speed system is excellent once you get the hang of it, but flying around in liminal speed is still crazy wobbly and tough to navigate for me. I was busily collecting goodies at one site on a planet when I was suddenly visited by enemy fighters, up CLOSE. One crashed and burned right next to me, lol! Quite the surpirise. I jumped in my ship and went up to fight them off, which is easier in atmo than in space I find. I do most of my flying from the remote station in the airlock, but go forward to the bridge to check the scanner station and communications sometimes too. I save often. I mean OFTEN.

      Top marks for this fantastic game.

      BTW, If anyone is successful in extracting the ship in a 3D program, let me know. If the model can be shared, it would be very simple to convert into a paper model I’d be happy to share the files for this once I get it all unfolded and ready Then we could all have a real model of the scout ship atop our monitors as we explore.

      To use a well known quote “Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of  Orion” when these enemy ship blow up they sometimes fall back onto the asteroid or go into a orbit or just hang their, don’t know if it was designed or just a quirk of the games gravity but it’s a great touch. 😎

      New version with lights :fan: will be downloading it as soon I remember what my log in was.

      * Lights! The #1 most requested feature. Now you can press “G” to engage your ship’s headlights, or the player character’s flashlight, when you exploring those dark asteroids!

      * Gamepad support! Technically you could always use your gamepad (like a 360 Controller) to play Rodina, but the experience wasn’t very good. Now I’ve added a gamepad remap menu, I’ve tweaked control for the gamepad to make it much easier to control, and added some other tweaks/fixes.

      Now that this first update of the year is out, I am going to start moving forward with real development again. Expect to see our first official vote soon, allowing everyone who bought the game at the Bossypants tier or above to choose what I work on next!

      One last thing: I hate that people need to download the entire installer to try new updates. Starting next week I’ll also be starting work on an integrated updater for the game. No telling when that will be done- just wanted you to know 🙂

      First vote on what should be worked on next. http://elliptic-games.com/?p=363

      First Official Vote!

      January 19, 2014

      The time has finally come to issue the first official Rodina vote! Everyone who is in the Bossypants tier can participate, and if you aren’t yet in the Bossypants tier, you can upgrade at any time in order to have your voice heard.

      The topic of this vote is very simple: What should Brendan focus on next? All items will be addressed in time- which would you like to see first?

      Nuts and Bolts

      This option will have me focusing on ship simulation stuff. Fires in the engine room! Electrical grids! Life support systems! I love simulation stuff cause it can lead to emergent situations, which will be the long-term focus of the game.

      This is the option I would like to start work on first, as I think the character-level gameplay needs some work, and that it doesn’t make sense to work on other features (such as hacking) until there’s more going on in the ship. I imagine the VERY first thing that will happen are fire emergencies!

      Hacking

      A fan favorite! This feature will eventually allow players to customize their own ship’s behavior, and someday to hack enemy ships as an offensive tactic. But until the game becomes more complex, this feature would be more of a sandbox. I favor waiting on this feature until there are some simulated elements in the ship which the hacking could manipulate, but I’m also totally happy to just dive right in and see what can be created right now!

      First Aid

      Choose this option if you’d prefer that I focus on Rodina’s performance and stability! Since Rodina was released about a month ago, I’ve been trying to clear up crashes and improve problems people are having. I’m pretty happy with where things are, but if you’d like a LOT more focus on this area, choose this option!

      More of the Same

      More weapons! More enemies! More planets! If you like Rodina the way it is and would just like to see more of it, choose this option! I can try to add some moons for a couple of the planets, and perhaps some dwarf planets in the Asteroid Belt, some new projectile types, some new enemy types with cool new behaviors.

      Has to be nut and bolts no point have an interior of a ship with nothing to do in it or not being able to fix or adjust the ship systems. (hello X-Rebirth :haha: )

      I like to see Rodina take a few tip from Sundog ie the shunts.

      Yup I totally agree. Hacking is hopefully gonna be cool, but it’ll be much cooler to start with ship systems, I think.

      I’ll be announcing the results later today, but that is probably going to win by a large margin. I think people agree with your logic!

      Basically the shunt allow you bypass a damage component and restore some power to a ship system a good description can be found here on this site.http://gamesoffame.wordpress.com/sundog/ The Lightspeed/Hyperspeed games also use a similar icon base system although IIRC there were nothing like the shunt in it.

      sundog-sub-c.gif

      And now I’m looking at the engine’s display, where I can see one of my control nodes is shot. Of course that’s the one part you can’t shunt…

      Walking into the engineering bays displayed a schematic of various systems of the ship using a row of four coloured icons. Your ship had a number of systems, warp and sublight engines, guns for fighting, shield generators, scanners and “pilotage” (control systems).

      Here again the interface “just worked” incredibly well. When the game started several of these parts were broken, as you could easily see by looking at the ‘burnt out’ icon. You could drag these out of their place in the parts schematic and replace them with new parts from your pockets.

      Each system in the ship was made out of four parts, starting with a ‘Control Node’ (a computer interface) and then three other parts. You go to the shop, buy the parts, put them in your pockets, then walk back to the ship and take them out of your pockets and put them in place. For a quickly fix you could replace any part except a control node with a multipurpose “shunt”, but the system in question would then be less effective. Shunts also had a really bad habit of breaking down in combat, typically when you needed all of your systems working at their best.

      Think Rodina could use use some thing similar to this as most of the newer games just have equipment which can be destroyed or you just move a power bar to transfer power from one system to another, none of them seems to have anything like the Sundog system.

      That’s cool! Yeah I agree about making things a bit more complicated than other games. I would really like to do something that was cooler than just “Shift Power to Shields!”… But with the customizable nature of the ship, it can get complicated. I almost feel like the best route would be to give each individual computer/machine it’s own set of components, and then add a lite layer of interaction between the machines as well.

      Going to be interesting! Will be devoting lots of time to this stuff over the coming weeks / maybe months, as simulation is the first set of tasks I’m gonna work on.

      EDIT: One thing I don’t like about the shunts is- in my ideal world, every component would have a use and would affect the greater system. In a real system with cause and effect, how could you replace a component with a generic repair part? …. Not sure yet how that would work.

      It’s a good idea you could also have junction boxes in the corridors for rerouting power or data for in the event of a system being damaged or destroyed . or to take it one step further have them in a vent as in Startrek.

      The shunt could be anything a good example of a real life one would be the jury-rigged air filter put together by the Apollo 13 crew from parts aboard the command module and Lem.

      To put it in game terms, the player may be able to make a ships component from a number of different items found on planets, space stations or salvaged from destroyed ships.This jury-rigged item would never be as good as the proper one as it would keep failing so the player would have to replace it.

      I think I’m ready to come back to Rodina and give it another chance. I spent hours clearing one of the planets of all enemies and finally did it. I got every frigging red circle eliminated, but because its hard to tell from the atmosphere, even criss crossing the whole place very high up, I went into orbit to get a little distance and have a better view, so I touched the limnal drive very very briefly to be able to get a better view of the whole planet. As soon as I stopped and turned around to get a look at the planet, it was frigging FULL of red circles again…as if I had never been there. I had just spent HOURS clearing it out and in one instant lost all of that work just going out to have a look see from a little further out for one sec. I haven’t touched this game since I was so frustrated.

      Raptormeat, if you want to know what to work on next, before adding any new features, figure out how to fix THAT little beauty of a glitch. I’m not frustrated anymore but with so many great new spacey games hitting from all sides now, it doesn’t take much to pull the fans off the Rodina track.I still have to say I loved the look sounds and feel of this game. It completely absorbed me for days, and I will go back for more.

      Oh nice to make your acquaintance. Raptormeat…why not Brenden or Anthony :)…

      Just seems a far depart from

      So Rodina looks like my kind of game. Here’s me: sandbox…space ship. Internal view. Planet walk around. Ship combat (capital preferred, not dog fight things…just not deep enough), simulation elements, you know fire in the engine room from a nasty hit through the shield, run to engine room out it, or a crewman Ai does. That kind of real feel. Like think Universal Combat (Battlecruiser 3000ad) with all those bells and whistles mentioned. AI to interact with factions and stuff like X3 would be a big bonus…but that describes my dream game, (what I said above).

      Games can’t really hold my attention now. Last game I played for more than one week was eve online (played it for years) I think the social aspect of the game and the intensity of what is at stake really drew me to it. For anyone who can stand it, they stick with eve almost forever. Or for a very long time, but it is still not the average gamers cup of tea.

      I am hoping SC might be that kind of game. Pulsar, maybe Limit theory but I don’t see LT holding me either as it only deals with one aspect (space).  ATM Rodina is the genesis of the game I’ll want to play, but I know for sure there can’t be enough to do to keep someone like me playing. You have any idea on a timeline for adding emergent gameplay (nuts and bolts?)?

      I am after all a future customer. In the end I’ll probably buy it, if not play it because games like yours need to be supported for the legions of people who have never experienced such a good space game.

      Oh before I forget have you given any thought to more freedom of what the player wants to fly? Like a cruiser or something? Will there be any factions or will there be somewhere you can buy ships from or something? A market or is all that planned and I am jumping the gun. I know as a seasoned developer you have some sort of road map (other than the user votes).

      Edit number 2:

      Ok tried the demo. Some thoughts. I couldn’t play the full hour because even though the frame rate is seemingly smooth, it ‘snaps’ around? Hard to explain, you know if you ‘snap’ something to alignment? That’s what it is doing when I look around or fly around.

      -Ship seems really big on the inside but looks small on the outside, can get lost.

      -Didn’t notice any way to navigate by a map inside the ship. Really no clue where one is going.

      -Didn’t notice a radar for navigating nearby in space.

      -Nice music

      I opened my airlock while in space and space dived to the planet, cool 🙂

      Didn’t die tho! My ship just sat up there without me. Oh well!

      1 gig ati radeon 6850

      Bit of info foe any one making Youtube videos http://elliptic-games.com/?p=500

      Firs things first, because some people have asked for it, here’s a little legal notice for anyone making videos for Youtube:

      Secondly, some folks have let me know that the game starts crashing when they record video. If you are experiencing this, could you try the following steps and let me know if they help?

      Elliptic Games explicitly grants permission to anyone to make recordings of Rodina, and to monetize any videos of the game they produce..

      • The problem may be a conflict with recording and the music streaming. In the options menu, way at the bottom, there’s an option that says “[debug] disable music”. Please turn this on, restart the game, and let me know if that helps!
      •
      • Just as a test / idea, could you try saving your video to a different hard drive than the one you have Rodina installed to?
      •
      • Finally, I have created a test build which may help this issue, though I’m not certain it will. Download, drop it in your Rodina folder, and try that!
      •

      If you are having that issue, and try any/all of these potential fixes, please let me know which ones work and which ones don’t! This will help me clear this problem up once and for all. Thank you so much!

      I agree it’s is a bit Tardis like on the inside of the ship although it looks more like a fighter on the outside.

      The outside needs to be more like.

      You know their a gameplay idea in that, put the ship in orbit and and don a a dropsuit (Starship Troopers) maybe with a fuel gauge so you have some control over where you land use too much and you would have to find more on the planet. Could also be used as a jump jet on the surface to get around quicker.

      Suit could be in the airlock or have it own compartment.

      update on work going on for the new version.

      Oh my! It’s been so long since I gave people a real update. Here’s the quick intro! Progress on Rodina 1.1.0, the first major update to the game, is going well, although I was hoping to have it released by now. The delay is due to standard reasons like feature creep (which I will outline below), along with some personal events which have been a distraction. Unfortunately, due to some changes and running around in my day-to-day life, I haven’t gotten much work done over the past 2 1/2 weeks.

      Nevertheless, progress continues. I’m hoping you guys will be really pleased with what the next update contains, although there won’t be as much new content as I would like, as I’ve decided to also spend quite a bit of time on bugfixes and improvements. Here’s what to expect:

      • Ship Fires

        You guys know about this already, but this will be the main new gameplay addition. When your ship is damaged heavily and takes a hit, it will occasionally start a fire somewhere in your ships interior. You have to get to a fire extinguisher and kill the fire before it consumes the whole ship, including you!

      • Improved Ship Crashing

        This feature isn’t finished yet, but I’m hoping to improve the way the game handles NPC ships crashing on the planet surface. Right now it can cause weird behavior, and huge slowdowns. In the future, they will be handled a bit more intentionally.

      • Improved Mouse Handling

        I added some features which make mouse control MUCH smoother. It might be hard to notice the difference, but it’s there. Also, I fixed a bevy of mouse-related bugs which should clear up many of the problems various people have reported with sluggish controls, etc.

      • Improved Streaming

        As per my last post about Youtube streaming, I’ve added some fixes which will hopefully make the video creation process a bit easier. Fewer crashes and a smoother experience (I hope!!!)

      • Improved Atmospheric Reentry

        In addition to fixing some bugs with atmospheric entry which improve the experience, I’m also toying with the idea of adding an option to adjust the “push” of the atmosphere, and initializing the default to a setting which will make it quite a bit easier. Feedback welcome on this point 🙂

      • Improved Savegame Management

        I’ve added backups to the savegame system, in case you overwrite something or a save gets corrupted. Also, the loading menu now sorts savegames by date rather than name. Finally, I’m hoping to add an Autosave feature.

      • Editor Undo/Redo

        A very useful new feature which will hopefully give people some confidence to create new ship interiors.

      • New Game Modes

        I’m splitting “Exploration” mode into two separate modes- a “Freeform” mode which allows full freedom of exploration with no story elements, and a “Peaceful” mode which is similar to Freeform, but with no enemy ships.

      • Improved Actor Management

        The game requires better functions for updating actors, and for spreading out updates over time, and for ensuring that actors are being handled correctly. This is all interior stuff you won’t see, but the hope is that I can improve performance and remove some cases where the game might start to stutter over time.

      • Pre-work on an auto-updater

        I don’t have time to complete the auto-updater for this release, but I do want to prepare the road for it. So I may have some features which are related to downloading files / checking for updates on the server. Nothing major, but it’ll be a good intermediary step towards making sure you guys don’t need to download full Rodina installers anymore.

      And of course, there are a bunch of bugs that will be fixed in the new update as well, including this one, this one, and this one.

      I hope to have this update out within a few more weeks.

      Finally- be aware that this update will be the first update that constitutes a NEW GAME VERSION. So if you’ve bought the game at the Appetizer tier, that means that you won’t be able to run the new game outside of demo mode! To upgrade, all you need to do is donate some more money once the new version comes out (as little as $2) to refresh your membership. Of course, everyone who purchased at the Buffet level or above will be able to play this and all future updates!

      I hope you guys are as excited about these changes as I am! I’m sorry there won’t be as much meat in this update as I’d like, but I’m eager to get the game on even more solid footing, at which point it’s back into lots more new features and content!

      Hey Dude, sorry to worry you 🙂 I use Advanced Installer to package the game up, and it’s possible that I boned that up somehow. I’ll look into it. Anyway I promise that it’s not trying to do anything nefarious- just install the game and the prerequisites (DirectX, etc)

      Does that happen for only Rodina? That’s obnoxious. I don’t really intend to get a certificate for the game code, but I’d love to fix whatever is causing that error. Surely that’s a side effect of the way the game is installed or something? You must have tons of unsigned EXEs on your machine 😛

      I’m going to take a few days to test this baby up but I’ll release it to you folks as soon as it’s ready! Won’t be long now 🙂

      It’s out :fans:

      I’m so pleased to announce that Rodina 1.1.0 is available for download and purchase! You can also get this version in ZIP form.

      This update’s main feature is Ship Fires!

      Rodina-1-1-0-Fire1-300x187.jpg

      Ship fires occur infrequently when your ship takes damage in combat or after a collision. Fires spread fast so when one starts, quickly get your ship to a safe place, grab a fire extinguisher, and start extinguishing!

      Note well: Using fire extinguishers leaves an area temporarily immune to fire. Use this to your advantage- often the better strategy is to box a fire in to prevent it from spreading before fighting it directly. You’ll have to be quick, otherwise your ship will end up destroyed!

      Rodina-1-1-0-Fire2-300x187.jpg

      1.1.0 is also a major engine update, with too many engine upgrades to list. Users who have had problems with high-performance mice will see their problems resolved. Actor management is greatly improved and optimized. The game now autosaves at important moments. The editor has undo/redo buttons.

      There are also many tiny new engine features and bugfixes. The save/load menu now lists files by date. You can no longer punch through an atmosphere by using the Limnal Drive. A new section on the main menu will alert you when a new version is available. The bugfixes are legion.

      Thanks to those of you who have stuck with me for so long waiting for this update! I’ll be putting out a video later this week with a bit of an explanation for what took so long and what I’m going to do in the future to improve the process. Now I know how George R. R. Martin feels 😛

      Just spent an enjoyable hour trying the demo. I just wandered around, found my ship, flew about, got lost, flew back, wandered around more, got lost again, found some boxes by sheer luck 🙂

      It’s very sparse but it gets one thing absolutely right: the atmosphere. It has that “lonely space exploration” feel which I love, like Pioneer and Fairspace. Ambient music is excellent too. I’ll probably buy it and keep exploring.

      Things I miss so far are: altitude indicator on the ship for landing, some kind of “you have a new message!” bleep, and a torch/flashlight, so that you don’t just have to run around the planets in the dark 🙂

      The Reddit AMA I did this week was amazing! It just kept going and going- I answered questions for about 16 hours straight, went to bed, then got up and started answering again.

      Hey Guys! So I’ve been asked a few times about what’s next for Rodina. I realized I had to have an answer to this question 🙂

      A little background: My plans for Rodina literally do include the kitchen sink, so it can be difficult to choose from a smorgasbord of possible features. But after thinking about this a little bit, I realized that despite my indecision my gut already knew what I was going to be working on.

      While promoting the game the past few days, I’ve mostly just been cleaning up the project and reorganizing code. But just recently without much thought, I started work on a Room System, that would understand enclosed spaces and the way they connect to each other. Nothing too complicated, but also it would be pointless unless I was going to use it for other systems, like atmospherics, or an electrical grid. You know, the “Sim” stuff you guys voted on 😛

      SO! I’m going to do that! Now that I’m done with fires, I’m going to continue with simulation features. Rather than bounce around, chipping away at several boulders, I’ll try to focus on ship sim stuff for the next couple of months at least and see how much I can carve out. I think some focus will serve both me and the game very well.

      After that, maybe start work on NPCs? It’ll be vote-time then for sure!

      That altitude meter and ships landing gear are still the two thing I would like to see in the game but we will wait to see what the next vote is for.

      Yeah, the altitude meter fits into the “We need headlights!” mold- once I start hearing a request over and over again, it becomes a higher priority. No guarantees of course but I’ll keep it in mind!

      Nice to see some frequent updates to the blog :good:

      Here’s the progress on the room system I’ve been making. This system splits up the map into different sections based on how they are connected. Here’s the system artificially turned into colors so it can be seen in action:

      RoomSystem2-300x187.jpg . RoomSystem4-300x187.jpg

      There’s still a few bugs. As you can see, the system thinks these two rooms are one room when connected by an angle piece. I must have some error in the fill algorithm which finds the boundaries of each room:

      RoomSystem6-300x187.jpg . RoomSystem5-300x187.jpg

      The system doesn’t understand the big airlock doors yet, either.

      As I mentioned in a previous post, this system will be used for several ship simulation features. I think my goal for this next update is going to be the ability to blow the airlock, exposing the ship to hard vacuum and blasting out its atmosphere. That seems like a fun feature, and it will also mix well with the fire – no oxygen means no combustion!

      news update from the blog http://elliptic-games.com/?p=653

      A very exciting and pivotal day for Elliptic Games- Rodina is officially available for purchase on Steam! You can also try the demo, or download the Rodina soundtrack as a DLC!

      For existing customers: Steam keys are coming soon. Everyone who donates up to the Buffet tier ($15) or above will receive a Steam key. That includes those who are currently in the Appetizer tier who bump their donations up. BUT it may take a little while to get those keys out. I’ll post again once the system comes online!

      Rodina will remain for sale here on the site, and I will continue to do votes and offer picture credits to those who decide to donate at the appropriate levels. I’m not 100% sure how it’s all going to fit in with Steam, but hopefully things won’t change too much.

      Thank you to everyone who helped get Rodina to this point! My greatest hope is that Rodina is successful enough that I can worry less about business stuff for a while and focus 100% on development. If that happens, it’s because of all of you!

      Should make updating the game easier.

      New update on the way :fans:

      Hi Folks! It’s been a while since the last update so I thought I’d fill you guys in on what to expect next and when.

      Many of you know that this next update will be about Blowing the Airlock. This update will add atmosphere pressure simulation to the game, so you can open all the doors and the airlock of your ship to stop fires. But be careful – cause when the oxygen explosively decompresses, you might fly out the airlock too!

      Lately I have been crunching to get this next update out. I have a little trip scheduled Sept 7th – 13th: I am visiting my family on the East Coast, so I wanted to finish up before I left.

      Unfortunately, last night I got sick. And frankly I was pushing it already. So the update will come out the week I get back: Sept 14th – 20th. I’m a little bummed, but now I can take some vacation time to add some extra polish to this update, so it’s not all bad 🙂

      Going Forward

      This next update will include some other little surprises as well. Rodina players will find a new way to move around the world. Also, those of you who have referenced a certain scene from Wall-E will find satisfaction. And there will be some new options to improve performance for people experiencing lag when they first arrive at a planet.

      Finally, this update will pave the way going forward. I’ve come up with a flexible roadmap (which I will share at some point) for how I’m going to get to the point where players can blow the airlock on an enemy ship and run in guns blazing. Improving the interior system is a big step in that process!

      As always, thanks so much for your enthusiasm, patience, and general support for my game!

      Update now available through steam ect :gamer:

      Rodina 1.1.3 has been in beta testing on Steam for a few days now, and it’s finally stable and available for download!

      This build is BLOWING THE AIRLOCK and adds a brand-new feature to Rodina: atmospheric simulation. In this system, every room on your ship, and every location out in space, has an associated atmospheric density. Opening all of the doors on your ship to and draining the atmosphere can be a quick way to extinguish a whole fire, but it might also result in explosive decompression and throw you out the airlock!

      It’s not hopeless out in space, however, as you can use your new Jetpack to fly back in the ship. To activate the jetpack, simply try to hit jump while you are already in the air.

      This build also contains some new options for improving performance on low-spec machines, some optimizations to improve AI performance, and it removes the Steam wrapper which was causing problems for a large handful of customers.

      Brenden has posted a road map for the game, more details on the blog. https://elliptic-games.com/?p=780

      THE BIG GOAL

      In my wild fantasies I want to make Rodina a fully populated RPG world, with political factions, class warfare, laws, used spaceship salesmen, weapon and suit technologies, and yes – maybe even multiplayer. Realistically that’s all years away, so what’s the first step on that journey? We need a big goal to work towards that is ambitious, yet achievable, and which sets us up for future awesomeness.

      SO! The plan for next year (or more?) is get to the point where the player can blow an enemy airlock, board its procedurally-generated corridors, and take over the ship with lasers blasting. Every feature that I work on in that time will be related, directly or indirectly, to making that goal happen. And once it’s accomplished, the game will be in an incredible position for further development.

      So the way that I’ve broken this down so far is to identify several genres of future features:

      INTERIORS:

      * Moving Interiors

      * Cockpit / Windows

      * Arbitrary Entrances (Portals)

      * Multiple stories

      * Electrical Grid

      * Access Tubes / Ducts

      LOCATIONS:

      * Procedural Vanguard Debris

      * Board Crashed Enemy Ships

      * Enemy Defense Towers

      * [secret]

      NPCs:

      * Basic Companions

      * AI / Pathfinding

      * IK / Behaviors / Animation

      * Enemy NPCs near downed ships.

      * [secret]

      Nothing here is meant to be final – this is just to give a rough idea. I’m trying to get a feel for the kind of art assets, features, and story elements which will best support the Big Goal, and building the updates around that. Each will add a fun little gameplay element in its own right, so that we are constantly moving forward while keeping the game viable.

      Once enough of these updates have happened, we can start to synthesize them:

      ENEMY COMBAT:

      * Board Enemy Ships

      * Invade Enemy Base Complexes

      If we’ve done our jobs right, most of the features for these updates will already be done! This will allow us to focus this stage on content, variety, and refinement!

      Rodina 1.1.4

      This update is called Spaceship Bobsledding, and it adds a brand-new feature to Rodina: moving interiors. Now you no longer need to bring your ship to a full and complete stop before exiting pilot mode. You can simply leave the controls while the ship is moving. This has several implications:

      * You can no longer Park In Space, so be careful! Your ship will keep moving (and crash!) while you walk around.

      * The throttle will keep doing what it was doing when you left the controls. So the ship may coast, or it may actively drive, while you are in the interior.

      * Be careful when exiting the ship. Leaving while driving or while in 3rd or 4th gear is not recommended. Leaving while the ship is rotating quickly isn’t advisable either.

      And it’s the cockpit mode for the next update.

      February 17, 2015

      The vote is closed and the results are in! Rodina customers in the Bossypants Tier have spoken and they have spoken thusly:

      Robot Babies: 41
      Cockpit Mode / Windows: 69
      Moons: 29
      Bugs / Optimizations: 4

      The Bossypants vote is binding, so that means that my next milestone, which I am already hard at work on, will be Cockpit Mode! My plan is: you will be able to actually sit in the pilots chair, and when you activate the pilot station a Holoscreen will come down to show you a first-person view to the outside. You’ll also be able to place these Holoscreens around your ship to act as virtual windows!

      You may remember that I also asked from input from ALL Rodina customers, via youtube, email, Reddit, twitter, and Steam. They responded as follows:

      Robot Babies: 14.5
      Cockpit Mode / Windows: 17
      Moons: 13.5
      Bugs / Optimizations: 5

      So, really the breakdown was pretty similar! What I’m getting from this vote is that, while Cockpit mode was the winner, the other options are pretty popular as well so I intend to keep them around for the next vote at least! The only option that wasn’t popular was Bugs and Optimizations but I will always have that option because the game will ALWAYS need them! 😀

      Thank you to everyone who participated- I hope that it was fun getting to decide what’s next for Rodina! I’ve really enjoyed getting your feedback and look forward to doing it again soon!

      Also their has been a small house keeping update to the game.

      Rodina 1.1.5 is now available! This release is a maintenance release without any new gameplay features. However, it does have the following:

      * A new interior renderer intended to improve framerate for some users

      * A new document parser which dramatically cleans up errors in the ingame documents

      * A completely rewritten keyboard input tech to fix some isolated issues

      Also, a test feature! I did some experimentation with procedural robot voices. Try them out by pressing F9, F10, or F11 while playing!

      Update from the blog. https://elliptic-games.com/?p=848

      I’ve updated the Dev Build on Steam with some exciting new changes!

      As you know, the current milestone is Cockpit Mode, which involves, among other things, a viewscreen. This update contains the technical features necessary to make this work: Holoscreen Windows!

      Now you can see the entire Universe from inside your ship!

      Holoscreen-1024x640.jpg

      To try it out, switch to the Dev Branch in Steam, enter the ship editor, and place a few Holoscreen Entities in your ship layout. They will act as windows.

      A few notes:

      * I had to disable MSAA anti-aliasing for technical reasons (I can explain below). You’ll see jaggies, but I will fix this before releasing the milestone.

      * Please don’t worry that you can see your ship from inside itself. I’ll work it out before release.

      * The Holoscreen models are ugly and temporary.

      Enjoy!

      Technical Notes

      * The windows are implemented as portals using the stencil buffer. They are an exciting feature which eventually could be used not just for cockpit mode, but also for mirrors and (one day) wormholes / portals.

      * Internally, I had to refactor the “geometry collection” render stage, to allow for greater control over what is rendering when (“First, render the portal, then render the whole exterior, then the whole interior”, etc). The new system is awesome- much cleaner, more powerful, and easy to read than what I had before.

      * The game uses a logarithmic depth buffer for the extreme distant depth precision needed at planetary scales. Since this is implemented in the pixel shaders, it doesn’t work great with MSAA. It left artifacts on the interior tile pieces, and so I used to turn off the log depth buffer every time the layer went inside. (You may have noticed that there were lines in the wall that disappeared when you closed the airlock- that’s why!) With the way the portals work, it’s better if everything is a unified system, so after hemming and hawing I’ve disabled MSAA. I will implement FXAA, which will hopefully play nice with the log depth buffer, before the next release.

      Never realized there was a dev build on Steam although I think I will wait until he updates the main game.

      Oh yes 😎 😎 😎 😎 https://elliptic-games.com/?p=860

      Last night I stayed up late and finished all of the major changes necessary to finally do this:

      Cockpit-Mode-1024x640.jpg

      Flying in first person is a go! And it’s pretty great 😀 You guys are gonna love it!

      Now to make it so you can actually sit in that pilot’s chair!

      Going to be one sweet update.

      From the blog https://elliptic-games.com/?p=866

      CockpitMode-1024x576.jpg

      Cockpit mode is now available on the beta branch on Steam! To try it out:

      * Switch to the beta (or dev) branch

      * Either start a new game, or load the new default interior so that you get some Holoscreens in your cockpit. You can also add Holoscreens, or the new Holoscreen tileset, if you want to keep your current interior.

      * Sit in the Pilot’s Chair by just walking into it

      * While flying the ship, press “F” (for “Activate”) to bring up the pilot menu, and choose “Toggle 1st/3rd Person”

      Now you’re flying in 1st person mode!

      Warning!

      Cockpit mode is for Rodina experts only. You think atmospheric entry and combat were hard before? Now they are even tougher!

      Also:

      This is build 1.1.6 and it comes with some caveats: this particular build is not going to come out of beta! There are a few reasons for this:

      * Cockpit mode introduces some pretty big performance issues. It may not be playable on your machine!

      * MSAA anti-aliasing is still turned off

      I’m going to be out of town for a little over a week, but after I get back I’ll fix any bugs you guys find, and start on an optimization pass and put anti-aliasing back in, before fully releasing this build!

      Nice 😎 😎 but am still waiting for it to make it into the main branch.

      May 5, 2015

      Thanks to the help of all the beta testers, Rodina is faster and more stable than ever! This update finally allows you to control your ship in first person from the pilots chair!

      (Press F (or whatever your “Activate” key is) while piloting the ship in order to bring up the piloting menu, which will allow you to toggle first person mode.)

      It also comes with some significant optimizations, including some new options: Retro Mode, and Lighting Quality, which can drastically improve performance for those with very low-spec machines. Here are some examples of what Retro Mode looks like:

      RetroStart-300x168.jpg RetroSunset-300x168.jpg

      I’m not going to lie – I’m not stupid enough to do this, but there was a brief moment when I considered making Retro Mode the default way to play the game. It’s a gimmick but I like it a lot!

      Read on for the full patch notes:

      RODINA 1.1.7

      * New Feature: Retro Mode!

      * New Feature: Lighting Quality option

      * New Feature: EnableGodMode() script function

      Hello!

      I’ve seen Rodina on steam, and it really looks nice. However, most of the reviews I’ve read are not super useful as they boil down to ‘oeee pretty, oeeeh you can land on planets’.

      Of course that’s great and immersive, but I’m wondering about gameplay. Are there already things to do to keep you busy, or is it currently limited to flying around, some combat and seeing pretty planets.

      I’m fully aware it’s early access, and it already looks great, but I’m kind of wondering if there’s already ‘meat on the bones’ or not 🙂

      Thanks, and keep up the great work!

      Hey Waervyn – so, Rodina has SOME meat on the bones (there’s space combat, fires in your ship, some interactive stuff, etc), but of course that’s the biggest place where I need to expand.

      I would say right now the reviews are so positive because when you play, it’s really easy to just wander around and imagine what the game will be like once more stuff is added to it. It really get’s the imagination going.

      BTW- there’s no need to wonder about this stuff. I have a free demo of the game for exactly this reason! Just download and see for yourself 🙂

      Thanks for the reply!

      Sorry to ask, what is the aim you have with the game in the future?

      According to the description on your site it’s mostly exploring and combat.

      While I like exploring in a sense, exploring for the sake of exploring gets old quickly (oeeeh, this planet is blue, while the other one was red!). This is exactly the reason I think No Man’s Sky is going to be terribly boring after the first 2 hours.

      In Rodina’s case, what will keep exploring fresh? Furthermore, will there be things like in depth trading (stockmarkets etc.), planet colonization or other things, or is it mostly focused at combat and exploration?

      Thanks again, and sorry for playing the difficult customer 😛

      This game keeps looking better and better, and Morrowind was one of my all-time favorites!

      I don’t play Early Access games (I’m kind of an odd duck that way), but I’m eagerly awaiting Rodina’s completion. 🙂

      ……

      Yeah! So my ambition for the game is essentially infinite, haha 🙂 And since I’m just one man with limited capabilities, it’s really hard to say with authority what the game will become for sure.

      My goal is to make “Daggerfall in Space” – a seemless RPG type game with cities, factions, with mafia bosses and used spaceship salesmen.

      Right now, though, the big short term goal is NPC combat- specifically boarding enemy ships and taking them over. It’ll be a slow proces – I’m hoping to start with very simple NPC allies next, then incrementally add more and more features until you can blow an enemy airlock and run into their ship guns blazing. Once that’s done, I can work on proper settlements, more RPG / gameworld simulation features. Who knows. Game development is an organic process, and features get thrown out / changed / added / repurposed. What I can promise to stand behind is the general vision – a gigantic, immersive, procedural, viscerally fun RPG in space!

      Results of the vote.

      The votes are in, and the results aren’t surprising! Anyone who followed the poll on the Steam forums saw that there was one option that was the clear favorite:

      Robot Babies!

      The final results of the Bossypants voters was:

      * Robot Babies: 95

      * Multi-Story Interiors: 25

      * Moons: 35

      That’s the main vote so it determined the winner! However we also got a huge response via other venues. The total from the non-official poll was:

      * Robot Babies: 66

      * Multi-Story Interiors: 10

      * Moons: 16

      THANK YOU TO EVERYONE who participated! We had an amazing turnout for this vote. I’m really really excite to get these little guys in the game. I really feel like, in a year or two, we’ll look back at this as an important moment for Rodina! Thanks guys!!

      Be interesting to see where this goes.

      New update on the blog about line of sight for the NPC. https://elliptic-games.com/?p=988

      Work on the Robot Babies begins in earnest! Since the vote wrapped up, I’ve begun implementing basic NPC features, like Line of Sight. This is one of the game systems that figures out what the character is capable of seeing.

      RobotLOS-1024x576.jpg

      If you’d like to see progress, check out the dev branch on Steam and type “MakeRobot()” into the console to create a dummy robot character. Now every character (including the player) will get a white “vision cone” showing what you can see. The system will also show the lines of sight between the character’s eyes and the various objects in their room. Green means they can see it, red means that they can’t!

      The system isn’t perfect by a long stretch, but I think it should be fine for what these babies are going to need to do!

      Two blogs updates in a week, nice https://elliptic-games.com/?p=993 this ones about adding mods

      I just updated the Dev branch with an experiment that I’ve been working on: better Mod support for Rodina!

      The big concepts:

      * Rodina now creates a “Mods” folder

      * Players no longer need to manually copy, overwrite, or backup files to install a mod. Simply place the folder containing the mod in the “Mods” directory and run the game

      * Each mod can have its own Data folder, Script folder (all matching the layout for the main game). The game will automatically load these assets and, in some cases use them rather than the original game assets.

      I tested this with a handful of mods and some of them work perfectly as is. A few won’t work with the new system yet, but there’s nothing stopping you from installing a mod the old way.

      Internally, this involves big changes to the way scripts load. I’m positive that these changes will cause bugs. That’s why they remain experimental and in the dev branch for now. I welcome feedback from modders, and also any bug reports about things suddenly not working!

      You can find some of the mods for  the game here http://www.nexusmods.com/rodina/mods/categories/? about time some made a better ship model for the game.

      New update on the blog about the robots.

      August 10, 2015

      Hey folks! New Steam Dev Branch update to keep you up-to-date on what I’m working on!

      * Wandering Robots: the robots, while still majorly in-progress, now have autonomous random movement. They can wander around your ship without getting stuck on walls or doors. Try them out with the “MakeRobot()” console command.

      * Lots of major physics fixes related to the major refactoring from last time. Thanks to everyone for bug reports!

      * Enemies ship groups should no longer respawn. You can clear planets now! (this was buggy before- let me know how it goes! Look for respawning, planets having way too many enemies, etc)

      As usual, this update may be buggy and is only for info and testing purposes!

      I know it may not look like it but I’m making great progress on the robots. After this I’m just working on fun robot stuff – animation, behaviors, sound FX, etc! Very exciting!

      Couple of new updates.

      First off one about the robots

      The Robot Babies are going great! Getting closer to release on these guys. Basic NPC features are mostly done and now I’m moving onto “flavor” features. Current work: Eyes!

      RobotEyes-1024x545.png

      My goal is for the Bots to have expressive, varied eyes, so I decided to create them procedurally. Very excited to see them bring these little guys to life even more!

      And the second one about a new Blender exporter.

      Those of you who have used the Blender Exporter (from the Modding Resources page) know that it was kinda janky and needed some work. Thankfully, a volunteer stepped forward to improve it! The lovely Mark van Dijk worked with me to add some much-need features. Now you no longer need to edit the script file before installing, and you have the option to only export selected objects or to do the entire scene.

      This new version is for Blender version 2.74 or above.

      You can download the new exporter directly here. Thank you for your help Mark!!

      We might start seeing more ships ect for the game.

      Bots are now in the dev branch of the game.

      ManyBots-1024x576.jpg

      Hey guys! I’m here with what I believe will be the last Dev update for this milestone. This time I have a ton of changes, many of which are behind the scenes. Some of it has to do with the Bots though:

      * Randomized Bot parts – now when you call MakeRobot() from the console, the bots will be randomized! It’s not polished up yet but it’s fun to see a variety of robots pop out at once 🙂

      * Robots animate slightly and look around as they wander.

      * There are lots of optimizations related to robots as well as some with terrain generation. Performance should be better with lots of bots onscreen now, although their AI performance will degrade the more of them there are. I also added a new option, “Terrain Creation Rate”, which (when turned down) can result in smoother gameplay (with fewer hitches) at the cost of slower terrain updating. Let me know what values work best for you!

      * Oh, the player ship shows up on the Scanner now too.

      There are a ton of other changes in this update but I don’t think there’s anything else worth explaining. Don’t worry, I’ll post a full changelist when the update comes out!

      As always, the Dev updates might have bugs! I don’t recommend playing on the Dev branch unless you want to be helping me test!

      Don’t they look cute, can’t wait to blast them. :devil:

      At last the bots are here,apparently they are in the main game some where but I have not encountered them yet.

      Bots-10-15-1024x576.png

      This is a major milestone for Rodina – our first NPCs! Continue the game’s storyline in order to create Baby Automaton Bots and bring your ship to life! Bots will wander around your ship and look at the various contraptions, saying their names in Robot-ese. They can follow you around. And each one has their own unique brightly colored, animated, and only slightly creepy eyes!

      This update also comes with Mod Support. After playing the game once, a “Mods” folder will be created, into which you can drop new Mod directories. The files in the Mod folders will be loaded when the game starts, and can override game files in some cases. Now there’s no need to manually overwrite files to install mods!

      Looks like he may doing an altitude meter next which the game’s hud could sure use also I like to see some thing done with the bounces ship physics as I landed upside down yesterday.

      At last :biggrin:https://elliptic-games.com/?p=1072 now all we need is for the ship stop bouncing around like a rubber ball when it touches down on the surface and some landing gear.

      It’s here! The update to Rodina that adds a Targeting system, so you can properly gauge how far away planets, ships, and terrain locations are! To target an entity, hover the reticle over it and press T (or X on the Gamepad).

      Target-1-300x168.jpg Target-2-300x168.jpg

      Ok, space is dark, no doubt, but it would be nice if Rodina provides a nice infrared view for the dark planetside, instead of a primitive torch… I think the game would be even more immersive. (Or is this feature already in the game?)

      New update to the game :fans:http://steamcommunity.com/games/314230/announcements/detail/797520146030763908

      It’s here! Rodina 1.2.2 has arrived and with it, new locations: the broken, dilapidated ruins of the Vanguard Ship, floating in space. These empty husks have long since been stripped of their valuables, leaving… what, exactly? Find and explore them to find out…

      Screenshot-10-1024x576.jpg

      This update shows off the initial “Procedural Interiors” system. As I expand upon it in future updates, it will be used to create Ships and Planetary Bases to board, fight your way through, and take over.

      I also added Guns to this update because shooting stuff is fun! Make sure your ship has a few scattered around (like the Fire Extinguishers). You can always bring up your gun with the R (“switch weapon”) button!

      Full Changelist:

      * New Feature: Procedural Interiors

      * New Feature: Vanguard Chunk locations

      * New Feature: Blaster weapon

      * Improvement: Added VSync option

      * Improvement: Demo is now 90 minutes long and you can load savegames

      * Improvement: Limit pregnancy queue before player has their first Bot

      * Improvement: Bots never stop following you when outside

      * Improvement: Bots are quieter

      * Improvement: Made player faster inside, slower outside

      * Improvement: Better Steam API error message so users know to update Steam

      * Improvement: “About this Update” button added to main menu

      * Bugfix: Don’t run physics while in the ship editor

      Update about the last update. http://steamcommunity.com/games/314230/announcements/detail/797520748491579498

      Ok, so most of you already know this by now, but… I lied! Rodina 1.2.2 wasn’t just about Vanguard Ruins. It was also about… First Person Combat!

      That’s right, for the first time ever, when players opened the doors to the Vanguard Debris, they found themselves staring face to face with Xeno Scum! The combat in the game is fast-paced and inspired by DOOM, so the rule is: keep moving!

      ftVZj7t.jpg

      Now remember, this is just a first pass on the combat. I actually squeezed it into this update as a surprise and as a challenge to myself, so it and Procedural Interiors are both sort of half done. Next we will hold a Community Vote to determine which of these features to expand and improve first. If you choose Procedural Interiors, then I will add better room shapes, hallways, diverse room types, and entity placement. If you choose Combat, then I will add more weapons, more Xeno enemy types, health and powerup pickups. I will also have a couple other options.

      Of course, all of this is building to the big mid-term goal: Ship Boarding![elliptic-games.com] I think this is a HUGE step in the right direction, and I’m very proud to be finally crossing this threshold with you all. This is a major milestone that I’ve been putting off until the right time. The time is now!

      V0AhWMb.jpg

      I’m very excited for Rodina to evolve over the coming months. It’s an exciting time – things are heating up! Purge Xeno!

      Boy I can vouch for this especially the first time when I open the door on a piece of the Vanguard Debris and come face to face with them, even which the FPS setting set to zero I still get killed before I can get the aliens.

      Much as I like Rodina the game is still a long way from being anywhere near finished and it’s still lacking some basic functions like stopping the ship from bouncing around like a rubber ball when landing, I often end up upside down :haha: and it really does need some sort of scanner on both the space and foot sections of the game.

      update to the dev branch http://steamcommunity.com/games/314230/announcements/detail/811035995468312592

      Updated the Dev build with more in-progress work on the Combat Update.

      This time I added Health Pickups (and by extension: dynamic physics objects) for the first time! I also rebalanced combat a bit to make it harder, so each encounter will do more damage.

      Next up is an important behind the scenes improvement that will optimize FPS during combat, along with powerups and maybe a new weapon! (I’m not yet sure how I’m going to handle multiple weapons – in the long run I want to add weapon choosing to the HUD but it might be too soon for that.)

      But I’m REALLY excited the thing coming after that – it’s a big secret!

      Harder you got be kidding it’s nearly impossible as it is.

      For the moment Rodina suits perfectly for a coffee-break game as for the content now included and considering the pace at which it is growing this is a promise for the future 😎

      Too bad that my low-spec computer has a hard time running this game, it runs but it’s too intensive even at low resolutions and low grafics, so I cannot afford to run it for longer time.

      I miss one feature which should not be difficult to implement: The world overall is too dark, the contrast on the dark planet-side too low. A gamma feature in the options would be fine, but a change in the grafic engine in this regard would be much better of course.

      It is a bit dark but I think it gives the game a bit of atmosphere.

      Yes undoubtly, the atmosphere is a great part of this game. Take a fire estinguisher and move around your ship with it… :girlcrazy:  Had someone told me that years ago I would have moved him in a clinic…

      It an impressive achievement given that you pretty much do the same as that recent StarCitizen video where you start in space and fly down to the planets surface then exit the ship.

      Granted it not as pretty as SC and you can’t have some else fly the ship.

      Been a couple of updates to the dev branch and hopefully we will see them soon in the main game.

      Another update on the Dev branch with in-progress work on the Combat Update!

      This update adds a simple new weapon – a Repeating Blaster – which is an alternative for those who don’t like the charging mechanic of the standard Blaster. You need to add it to the ships interior or start a fresh game to grab one off the wall.

      More importantly – a new powerup! Defeating the Xeno Incinerator will give you a Fire Booster, which temporarily gives you the ability to shoot fireballs! (Currently very overpowered – have fun!)

      Most importantly – a change to the animation system that is mostly behind the scenes. I moved Xeno animation from Scripts to the Engine, using a new “Component” system which I am going to use heavily in the future. For now, this change should lead to a higher framerate in combat, and much improved procedural animation quality.

      Unfortunately this update took two weeks instead of one, but the new Component system is going to be super important to keeping the game optimized, so it was well worth the time!

      Another update to the dev branch. http://steamcommunity.com/games/314230/announcements/detail/753618265608201439

      Hey guys sorry this update is overdue but it’s a good one! It gives a look at the Blaster Missiles as well as puts Xenos all over the planets!

      n0gyCHG.jpg

      As always, the Dev update is for in-progress work. The Xenos in particular are outrageously buggy right now – they will run away from you, start fights with each other (kind of cool actually!) and the balance is all out of wack. Also the missiles don’t have a proper area-of-effect explosion yet – just the particle effects.

      To use the Missiles, hold right-mouse-button and fire!

      To try out this Dev update, go to Steam -> right click Rodina -> Properties -> Betas tab -> choose “Dev” from the dropdown

      The combat update is nearing completion! Next up will be the Beta release and it’ll contain a few more new enemies, lots of polish, and a surprise!

      Hope we are going to see this in the main branch soon.

      Rodina 1.3.4: Buildings Upgrade!
      28 September – Raptormeat

      The Xeno Bases in Rodina have received a major visual upgrade!

      This update includes 2 major technical additions. A room-based fog system adds visual depth to the interiors, and will allow me to visualize future gameplay elements like atmosphere, smoke, and poison gas.

      The walls are also now being procedurally decorated with the Wave Function Collapse Algorithm. This gives the interiors a more complex look and will allow for much more room variation!

      Next update is going to be pure gameplay – a new enemy, bigger bases, more resources, and more!

      Thanks for your support!

      **** RODINA 1.3.4****

      * New Feature: Wall pattern generator using Wavefunction Collapse algorithm from sample
      * New Feature: Rework rendering to be portal-based
      * New Feature: Room-based fog

      * Improvement: Apply planet atmosphere to all objects. Integrate planet atmosphere with fog
      * Improvement: Extend Xeno Door auto-close distance
      * Improvement: Allow particles to be registered from DataRender to work with old mods

      * Options: Garbage Collection rate option for possible tweaking
