      Update 9/28:

      – Added a new BBcode button to your Post/Reply window. You should now see a button called ‘HSimg’, what this does is now take any image you link to in a post and thumbnail it but also keeps the resolution of the original image. Not like the ‘Img’ bbcode which crops the pic automatically and you cannot see the pic in a bigger resolution.

So remember to use this tag for when you are linking to an image. Especially if it is a larger image.

      Code in action:

Using the ‘HSimg’ bbcode tag. as you can see it creates a thumbnail that you can now click on to show images true size.

      [hsimg]http://www.affuniverse.com/artdepot/public/Misc/newhuginn3000x.jpg[/hsimg]

      Using the ‘Img’ bbcode tag

      newhuginn3000x.jpg

See the difference now ๐Ÿ™‚ Have fun with this one.

Been a long time since my last update.

      – Added new forums for X32i: Redemption and Pioneer

      – Updated links page

      – Enabled the Gallery for everyone. Enjoy.

      Note:

For the gallery you will need to create a new login to upload and comment on pics. I put the gallery on a separate database to help with site performance and to lessen the risk of total loss if something should happen to SSC.

      Hey Everyone

This weekend I will be removing the Arcade mod from the site since I don’t see people really using it. And another mod people don’t see.

Doing this for my upcoming site update and trying to get the DB in shape for the upgrade so I can have as minimal issues as possible. Hopefully if I do everything right people won’t even notice I did anything. Or if anything you might get a page errors or something while I am doing it if people try to access certain things while I am uploading the fixed files.

I will more than likely do this in the late evening hours to have the least impact on users.

Also, over the next few weeks I will be parsing the forums and deleting old posts that are really not needed and renaming some titles to help with people finding information of certain topics and maybe even combining like posts. I have noticed there is several posts about the same game and things like that. We’ll see….

So if anyone does have any new feedback or improvements they might want to see for SSC please let me know now while I am building the changes and testing them ๐Ÿ™‚

      Thanks

      Or perhaps I misunderstood, (mod)?

What do you mean by this Bouitaz? Can you give me some specifics on this?

I just looked at stats, which was 388 total plays in 1.5yrs. That’s not even on game play a day. but I can keep it and add to the game pool. I just didn’t even bother with it because no one really seemed to be playing it all that much and got no feedback on it at all. So if people really want it in there I will keep it and update the games in it.

There has been no updates to this arcade (mod) since i installed it so any issues I might have to custom code something. But I have used this before and the arcade itself usually runs fine.

But please post your thoughts on this.

What I meant by cleaning is that at least one game does not work (rescue someting),

and others are perhaps a bit crude or, how to put it, less than stellar work.

The Arcade is usually played when one first arrives I’ve noticed,

and adds to the whole “flying thing” you’ve got going here.

It could perhaps be modified to work in a community with competitions and such,

but would probably involve way to much work, so that is a no go.

However, when one has read all there is one can always relax with some casual games.

Unless it takes too much to maintain, space, or integration problems,

then I see no harm in letting it be?

I am of course only one voice, and as I said earlier,

you can go ahead and delete it (if no one else feels like me),

I will just morn some, then move on.

More than likely Bouitaz you will see the Arcade mod after the upgrade. I just wanted people to step forward and let me know they use it ๐Ÿ™‚ I will look to add new games before the upgrade when I get the time to search for them. If you have a list of the games that do not work please post them so I can remove them.

More than likely unless something comes up between now and this coming weekend. I will probably be doing the site update then since it will be a long weekend for me here in the states (Memorial Weekend – Remember the troops). I am hoping that it should only take a few hours, but you never know with these things. Moving a database that is several releases old to something new always seems to have some issues.

Here is the tentative schedule for it all:

      – Friday: Disable user registration and lock the forums (about 9-10pm) this will stay this way until I think everything is working. I have to install something during this process after the database is migrated over and all new files are FTP’d to the server.

      – Sat: Mainly testing and last min tweaks and I hope to have the site running by the evening. So basically a 24hr downtime. So I hope you can survive until I have it all running ๐Ÿ™‚

I have been trying to do the small things to help speed the process up but there is still a lot to do once I re-upload everything. If all goes well everything should look generally the same but there will be a few new things and all the programs and scripts have been updated to their latest versions. I have done so much custom stuff to the site that its hard tracking it all down.

Going to enable gzip on the server and see if that helps with page load times. Google is complaining that some of the pages take up to 3 sec to load and they recommend I turn it on. Your damned if you do and damned if you don’t because when you enable it the server has to extract the contents to display it anyway so I guess i’ll try it and see how it goes for a month.

So if anyone notices a degrade in the performance just let me know.

      Update 11/1:

Been a little while since I have done a official update of what has been tweaked and added, so here it is:

      – Updated the gallery to the official release version, now running 3.0. I will look into personalizing it a bit more when I get time and there is a phpbb bridge that is being worked on that could tie into your site login credentials (stability will be the issue with this bridge).

      – Tweaked the Knowledge Base to have the layout look correct, had some alignment issues.

      – Fixed the issue by adding a mod to fix issue of the style getting messed up when linking in a large img using the bbcode IMG tag. Still the favored method is using the HSIMG tag.

      – Added a post ranking system to the forum area (request from Geraldine)

      – Updated the links and about pages.

      [hr][/hr]

Things that I will be working on… and hopefully implement by the end of the year.

      – New store link layout and maybe with some help get some designs for some actual SSC merchandise ๐Ÿ™‚ Some free stuff could be given to the members that their art is picked.

      – Add at least 20 games to the KB

      – Customize the gallery (if possible) to look like the rest of SSC.

Anything people want to have fixed or have some ideas please post them and I will see what I can do.

The anti-bot question during registration for these forums is bizarre and difficult to use. It asks a question like “What planet in our solar system has rings?” Three of the options are correct (Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune), but adding them in the order they exist in our system doesn’t satisfy the question. Same with the question “Which Star Wars films starred Mark Hamill?” If you add episode 4, 5 and 6 to the box in that order, it’s still wrong? Then of course it locks you out for a period of time because you missed the questions too many times.

Just wanted to bring this up, because I doubt I’m the only one that got frustrated with it.

    • #63974
      sscadminsscadmin

Thanks BaggerX for the feedback on this.

It is probably because the mod isn’t intelligent enough to know you have the right answers but just in different order. Hmm, because I have to put in the answers and I think it is only accepting the default order I had them in. Maybe i will refine all the questions to only one answer to solve this issue. You are the first person to bring this to my attention so thanks and I will look into fixing it with adding/refining the questions.

Have to admit, I don’t get any spam at all with all the measures I take ๐Ÿ™‚

If anyone has a question and answer they want to see in the registration form just let me know. It should be space/scifi specific.

    • #63975

      Fixed it BaggerX

      Replaced those two questions with:

In what movie SW movie did Obi Wan die in?

Which Apollo mission put humans on the moon?

All questions I believe have one answer now so that should fix the registration question problem.

    • #63976
      Bullwinkle

      ๐Ÿ˜€

I could not answer either of those questions, DarkOne!

What’s wrong with captcha? (And not the impossible-to-read kind.)

(PS: I think obi-wan died somewhere between Episodes 6 and 1, but I wouldn’t swear to it.)

    • #63977
      sscadminsscadmin

I had captcha for a while and noticed a lot of spammers signing up and it was a task to keep them in check. There is captcha reading tools out there for automating this task. I do the registration this way, so I know your not a bot and that most of these questions are really easy to the scifi gamer. C’mon you didn’t know Obi Wan died in Episode 4 or that Apollo 11 mission put humans on the moon ๐Ÿ™‚

I can gladly make it easier I just need some questions and answers thrown my way and i will gladly add more or remove the hard ones.

But I have to admit since putting in the sortable captcha I have had no spam at all. But I am open minded about other alternatives.

    • #63978
      Bullwinkle
      Participant

How would I know which of the Apollo missions made it to the moon? There were quite a few, and a couple of them did not work out so well, as I recall. The mission numbers would be quite difficult to sort out, without looking them up. Oh, and they all happened before I was born. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I had to look up Obi-Wan to be sure… He died in 2000, which was after the release of Episode One. However, he appeared in all six episodes, due to odd twists in the space-time continuum.

OK, so there was that scene in Episode Four where Darth Vader vaporized Obi-Wan, but that did not slow him down much. ๐Ÿ™‚

It’s a question that does not have a single, clear, answer (even if you look it up). That’s all I meant. Like the question about the number of planets with rings. ๐Ÿ™‚

You might as well ask Princess Leia’s favorite card game. Or the number of planets in our solar system. Or the name of the nearest star. ๐Ÿ˜‰

And, by the way, Star Wars questions tend to screen out anyone under the age of 40. Is that really your goal?

I understand the problem, but I think you are trying too hard. There are a wide variety of knowledges and experiences here, so it might be difficult to ask any one question that everyone could answer. To be fair, you would probably have to ask several questions, and allow a miss or two, which makes for a complex quiz.

I agree with a lot of what you’re saying. Having to open another tab and Google for an answer is kinda silly really. Something much simpler would be nice. I could see the bots learning to do word math, but you could make those a little more verbose. You could even keep the Star Wars theme if you like:

Example: “Eight jawas are salvaging a T-16. Three of them get picked off by sand people. How many jawas escape?”

      Something like that anyway ๐Ÿ™‚

      Update 3/19:

      – Website has moved hosts and there has been a casualty of this move and this was the download area. It looks like it isn’t salvageable at all. I will be trying to put it back together and with the help from any members we can get it back to where it was again.

      – Some of the benefits of moving the site to a new provider are: unlimited bandwidth, larger database limits, more file storage, backups and hopefully better speed for people.

      TO DO LIST:

      – Create a ftp file area for people to upload files to help with rebuilding of the download database

      – Get wiki linked into main page (might still keep it locked from editing for now)

      – Get gallery running on latest version (seems to be issues with Godaddy hosting I might need to resolve)

      – Create new videos page (old one wasn’t cutting it)

      – Add country flag mod to site

      – Rebuild download area setup

      – Update links page to reflect wiki changes

      – Update about page to reflect changes to site

Yep, same thing here, its like back in the early 90s with my rubbish 56k modem ๐Ÿ˜† I am sure Darkone is busy behind the scenes sorting things. I am sure it wont be long before all is back to normal. It does show you though how much we would miss this place if anything happened to it ๐Ÿ˜‰

Working on it right now. I noticed and even more slow down when I made some edits that GoDaddy suggested to make everything php5 compliant. All of the memory values and upload values are increased and functionality and responsiveness seems to have gotten worse. I noticed some errors yesterday while loading posts that the database timed out a few times and I think that is the biggest issue mainly because the majority of the info on SSC is in a database.

I am hoping they can solve my issues soon because it is frustrating enough that the move didn’t go smoothly and to then have some responsive and database errors makes it worse. Especially since the db hasn’t changed at all when switching hosts.

I removed the chat window from the forum view because for some reason it didn’t like the switch to php5 settings. I will uninstall the mod and reinstall it fresh tonight when I get home.

Hmmm seems like the website is running well right now for me or least a lot faster. Maybe GoDaddy did adjust something and didn’t tell me? Anyone else think the site is running better than the last few days?

One thing I did do was remove the mchat mod from the forum page. People have complained in the phpbb forums that this mod sucks up some memory and database cycles since it is constantly being watched for updates and those posts are stored in the DB.

I will fully uninstall it tonight when I get home and see how everything is. And if that does seem to be the problem I will need to find another chat mod to play with.

Still bothers me that there seems to be issues with the site when I enable the php5 settings on the site.

Did you have an idea on where you wanted this type of functionality to go? And is the intent to just have a random content area for people to post general comments or for an actual blog type functionality like a wordpress?

      Hi Darkone.

If you run ypur site off a linux server you should consider using varnish or nginx (reverse proxies) to offload all non session based traffic, this will free up allot of cpu-quota for pure php (logged in session browsing) since the reverse proxy will deliver cached from memory directly), and have almost no cpu usage.

I’m just guessing you’re getting cpu bound by your provider, pure php via apache is parsed/interpered on every page displayed consuming alot of cpu, but can easily be speed up 10x times by cacheing non cookie/session based traffic.

Both are free to use, varnish is the easiest one to setup. Nginx take also do SSL, varnish cannot,

It has been better the past two days least for me and a few others. Any better now for you? Why did I move… I moved the site because I reaching the threshold on database size and bandwidth. Now I have unlimited bandwidth and my DB size can be 1GB+ and my HD storage went up a bit. Was frustrating a bit yesterday when GoDaddy told me it was all me when I had the same code working on another host without issue. But we’ll see what I can do the next few days.

I have a linux server but it is shared hosting. I will move to a dedicated server or least a virtual one once when SSC makes more $$. I can’t install this type of software until I have a dedicated/virtual server.

Update on some of the things I have been working on.

This week I was going to start work on a fresh install of phpbb3.08 without the SEO mod because I think that is the reason why I am running into these problems. I will setup a fully running board and port my database over and see how it responds compared to the existing install. This is only tests and will have nothing to do with the current setup and it will be left alone. There is something going on and I want to find it!

I will let people know when it is ready so I can have a few folks login and test its speed and reliability.

Sorry for the delays in getting all of these issues resolved, I am working on it.

      Update 3/29:

      TO DO LIST:

      – Create a ftp file area for people to upload files to help with rebuilding of the download database (Complete) – (Still need to work out some permission issues.

      – Get wiki linked into main page (Complete) – Might unlock user registration this weekend

      – Get gallery running on latest version (Complete)

      – Create new videos page (old one wasn’t cutting it) – (In Progress) – Just trying to figure out how to make youtube’s video window bigger because adjusting the height/width values isn’t doing it.

      – Add country flag mod to site (Complete)

      – Rebuild download area setup (Complete)

      – Update links page to reflect wiki changes (Complete)

      – Update about page to reflect changes to site (Complete)

I’m really puzzled as to why actually because code wise the sight should be performing better than it did at 1and1 since I removed some old code and tweaked some settings to help with calls to the db. All I can come up with is that there is something conflicting with GoDaddy and I just need to find out what.

Only reason why that wouldn’t work Geraldine is because the site has changed a little that before the forums were at the root of the webserver (ie: /) and now they are at /forum. So now anyone that browses to spacesimcentral.com will get the WP page and you will need to click on the forum button or link directly to it. I am starting to work on the WP page functionality and converting my coded pages over to WP to give them all the same look and feel.

As you can see by my signature that was the value that was in the signature field in the database, so it doesn’t work not sure why the db export did this? Doing a few more things and then I will backup the DB because I think the site is at a good state right now. I shouldn’t be moving hosts for quite some time because this move was horrible. But it is done now and its just improving upon what I have new. Main things I will be doing this weekend is finishing up applying the mods and getting the file area back online (no files are lost), just the program switched directories and I probably have to adjust something. I will probably apply the original theme back to the forums to get rid of this blue look as well. ๐Ÿ™‚

      Tell me about it ๐Ÿ™‚

I took off my multiple choice captcha and they came running in or maybe it was the installation of wordpress? Either way I will put the multiple choice captcha back on with scifi related questions and that should help. Its amazing really this one spammer made 137 posts in 6hrs. I am at the point now where if your username even looks like a spammer I delete it instantly. So for anyone that is a legit user sorry ๐Ÿ™‚

I do have the download area online and it seems to be working well, thanks Geraldine again for the long hours uploading files and helping me test the download area yesterday. I have been slowly converting my pages to WP pages that need it. And noticed someone posted something about the link lists missing. They are in the wiki now. On the mainpage just hover over the wiki button and they will drop-down for you. I have yet to unlock registration just yet because I need to still do somethings in the wiki after I am done putting out the fires in the main site.

Gallery is totally done and working now as well. Its getting there and the site seems to be running well and that is the big plus.

I’m working on SSC all the chances I get, so if anyone sees anything broken or doesn’t look right let me know.

I guess they make money off people clicking on the links they make. But some good news on the battle against spam… I put my sortable captcha back in effect and I haven’t had one spam bot register since 11pm last night (when I enabled the functionality). The questions are based on planets, star trek and star wars. They should be very easy to the scifi fan or takes a few secs to lookup of the answer on google ๐Ÿ™‚

Sorry I have to be this way to any new users but I hate spammers with a passion and if anyone every has trouble joining you can email me and I will create your account manually.

Can’t believe I forgot that file, I will take care of that this evening. Thanks Brianetta.

Was also going to try to get a links page and video page up and running. The links page won’t be like before it will point to the different wiki pages I created for the different types of games (ie: SP/MP, MMO, Web and Mobile) and you can access this area from the mainpage. On the videos page I am still working on because I don’t like some of the players and youtube’s linked in player isn’t all that great and lacks tweaking ability.

I will try to update the forum links (near the top) to put in a HOME button and possible wiki and gallery area. The last thing I will get to is any style customization because I have done a lot of work now to this prosilver template that I don’t want to move from it ๐Ÿ™‚ I might just adjust logos and change some image files around to get different results.

I would suggest that รƒยขรขโ€šยฌร…โ€œGeneral Space and SciFi Gaming Chatรƒยขรขโ€šยฌร‚ย needs to be renamed, maybe รƒยขรขโ€šยฌร…โ€œSingle Player Games and Chatรƒยขรขโ€šยฌร‚ย or some thing along that line.

Also moving the chat threads to the top and game forum to the bottom as at the moment you have to scroll down to see the chat threads. Same goes for the รƒยขรขโ€šยฌร…โ€œSpace and Scifi MMO Chatรƒยขรขโ€šยฌร‚ย forum

PC and Console gaming could be merged into one rather than having two separate forums..

I can easily combine the PC and Console gaming discussions. And I will think of something to rename the general space/scifi chat section and kinda like what you suggested in the means of making it more general.

On the sub-forums taking up space at the top of the page I will have to look into because for as long as I have known this has just been the way phpbb worked. I will see if there is an easy was to collapse them or remove them entirely and make people use the top level forum page to drill in or make something custom if possible. But I will make those other corrections this evening.

      Thanks Pinback for the feedback.

These two have different game content in them. Because the ‘Space and Scifi MMO Chat’ is only for MMO’s of that type and the PC/Console Chat is for any and all games. I did merge the two forums though since all games can be discussed. I think the little forum consolidation and making more neat looks good so far.

Yeah. I was thinking about playing around with some styles since I didn’t get a lot of feedback about that theme I pointed out about a week ago. I just need to try to find one that the colors come close to matching the blog. I will probably play with something this weekend if I have time and I will probably remove the arcade as well since its not getting any use really at all. I have silently converted most of the gallery to a blog plugin and integrated it into the site and looks a lot better only downside for right now is that users cannot upload pics.

I have been a little busy lately and have been slacking in site improvements but I am taking a few days off coming next week and wanted to get a little work done on the site.

I think this theme matches pretty close to the blog theme and I will be trying to put the logo on the mainpage to but it is proving difficult.

Mostly like the new theme except for one thing. The topic titles are always bold so now I don’t see an obvious way to determine if a thread has new unread posts in it. Before I could just glance at the bold/unbold state of the titles. Any plans to fix that?

The icons hopefully do the trick because I don’t think I can change that because the CSS for that is linked into a lot of other places and would mess up the look & feel from other places as well.

      – Unread posts inside: forum_unread.png

      – Marks the unread post: topic_unread.png

You can also mouse-over the icons and they will tell you and for the sub-forums the little page icon will be red instead of black.

You can also change the you personal display options in your board preferences under your profile. I haven’t played much with those so not sure what your end result would be?

Ahh, I see what you mean with icon colour – my eyes aren’t great and I hadn’t picked it up. Its quite subtle.

There’s nothing obvious in the display control panel about unread threads.

No big deal, I’ll just add a little userscript magic to take care of it ๐Ÿ™‚

This is interesting. Need to ask a few questions on this because I am not seeing this and you have been the first to speak up on this issue.

Is it the whole site or just the forums?

      When did this occur?

And do you normally wear glasses or contacts and your not? ๐Ÿ™‚

Do you see that ‘Change Font Size’ icon in the upper right corner below the logo. Try that and see if it helps.

Try looking through your browser settings and look for anything that has to deal with fonts or accessability. Have you updated your browser recently? You could just export all your bookmarks and uninstall and re-install your browser. I know FF6.0.2 I use right now and works great.

Flushing the browser cache might help you, but if you are seeing this issue on more than one website than it would either be a browser setting issue or possibly OS font/sizing issue. I guess the big question is when did you start seeing the changes and what did you do or update around that time. I know a lot of that crap websites and software install into your toolbar on your browser can cause some havoc and give you malware/spyware at the same time.

    • #64054

I changed the font settings in FF 6.0.2 and that helped things get back to normal. Why it changed in the first place is a mystery, maybe a virus? Anyways, I ran a full virus check just to be safe. The smilies are still tiny though. ๐Ÿ˜•

EDIT, was just on the Frontier Forum and after changing the font settings in FF, the fonts are now much bigger than they were, while the SSCs are still the same. Now I am confused. Could it be an encoding issue?

EDIT MKII: Trying out Internet Explorer with the site, and everything is back to normal. So it must be an issue with Fire Fox.

I started changing, editing and merging forum areas on SSC.

Didn’t make the cut and removed entirely, the whole military and combat simulation and gaming area.

The Mobile and Web Gaming area is now a combination of (webbased gaming forum, tradewars and MUD based games, mobile games).

I will be editing some of the descriptions to remove deadlinks and things like that.

Just some thoughts on things I might change or do and wouldn’t mind some opinions on it:

      – I might merge both commercial and open-source indie forums.

      – Jumpgate forum area might disappear and I might just leave a few threads from that area. All forums and websites for JGC and JGE are now dead.

      – My thoughts on moving games to the main ‘Standalone Space/SciFi Combat and Simulation Games’ forum. I am thinking about actively moving sub-forums and certain threads to this forum once a game is officially released for sale (all free and open-source games will stay put). But the ‘Standalone Space/SciFi Combat and Simulation Games’ area is meant for paid games so I think it is right to migrate the games to this area as they are completed and sold?

And as always you see anything that needs fixing or removed do let me know. So anything that makes SSC’s move to new software easier is worth the time to do.

Umm, got a problem with your anti-bot registration:

It asked “Which Sci-Fi Movie series came first”?”

      Star Wars

      Star Trek

Now, Star Wars ANH was released in 1977

The Star Trek Movie Series’ first movie, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, in 1979

The Star Trek Television Series (aka The Original Series), aired their first episode in 1966

SO, after looking up the information, I put down that Star Wars came before Star Trek, as the question asked which “Movie series” came first.

… Apparently the question was not phrased correctly! ๐Ÿ˜› ๐Ÿ˜› ๐Ÿ˜›

You had me puzzled for a second or two there – having never seen the three se/prequels, they don’t exist for me (nor should they exist at all, from what I hear). I’d no idea that Star Wars had been re-christened Star Wars ANH. Still, you got the right answer – welcome aboard!

I found some more issues in the apache logs and I forwarded to the IP.Board folks because it does point to the nexus app. Which besides the store stuff it does provide security and it might be messed up. I have noticed that when I re-upload the app files (fresh) the site works again. So something must be altering the state of a file in there but there is over 1000+ files that get uploaded and I don't have the time to sift through them all. I think I am getting closer because I fixed a php issue with the server and now a new error appears but it points back into this software and is no longer a server issue… i hope.

I am sorry for all this download time in the wee hours of the night. Its just very strange that it does happen at night, almost like there is some sort of schedule some where that kicks in and then site goes down.

Updated SSC to the next major version of IP Board last night and there was a hiccup with the index page, that I had to remove it and put up something simple right now until I solve the issue. Everything else on the site should be working, please let me know if you spot something that doesn’t look right. Because I also updated the theme to the latest version and just want to make sure its working fine. I am going through pages but i’m getting old and I am tired so I might miss things.

I created another forum area for defunct games and I was planning on creating a Star Citizen and Elite areas, and maybe a little hangout area for the gold members to speak freely. And ideas please do step forward, always trying to integrate ideas from the members.

Sorry for the issues the past two weeks. It is some what my fault on some of it since I didn’t apply a security patch in a timely manor and someone was actually exploiting the flaw. Got to love people like that. That’s why all the recent upgrades. GoDaddy has also not been the best at solving my problems, there was some php.ini entries that I needed to tweak and I found this out on my own without GoDaddy’s help, um there support is absolutely worthless btw.

So please bare with me, I will stop the tinkering soon once I get things right.

Ahem, as you didn’t ask for posting what works (that would be huge posts), here is something of a puzzle: when I create a new post, all my paragraphs disappear (text comes all mashed up together – you may have noticed). When I edit my post, it is fine in the editing window – the text kept its original formatting. If I put a double line between paragraphs it shows correctly. All this on an iPad (ok, I’m traveling and it is handy to surf the web).

    • #64074
      sscadminsscadmin

Hmm, interesting. So if I get this right, if you create a large post (have an example post, or something you can put into a txt file and attach so I can play around with test posts?) it will sometimes put all paragraphs together and ignore formatting. But when editing the post it will show the formatting is correct. So almost like the WYSIWYG editor is not entirely working properly.

I have noticed that in the past that the editor is sensitive to what people may be copy/pasting into a post. I have copied text from another site to quote or re-post and it kept the formatting from the other site (which I didn’t want) and I had to re-copy it in as plain text (without formatting). But if you are writing your posts from scratch I would be interested to have an example, because I have yet to run into this when hand writing posts.

      Ok, lets try it:

This is the line after the first paragraph, with one empty line between both phrases.

This is the third line of the text. There is one empty line before it. All empty lines are created with the return / enter key. All the text is hand typed in the editing window – no dirty tricks like copy/paste, something that should never have been put in any OS, specially mobile OS (… Followed by a ton of equally stupid statements…)

This is forth and final line of text. As before, one empty line between it and the previous.

Pyros, I have no means to test mobile devices yet. I do have a mobile skin (both default IP Board and this theme mobile skin) installed and i do have tapatalk installed. Do you use these at all or only the safari browser? And does the Ipad have another browser you could try like Chrome? Firefox?

Does anyone else use a tablet or mobile device that has this issue? I also might break this post off Pyros because I think this might need more attention as well, just because I have no way to test this currently. I depend on the members to let me know if something is messed up when it comes to mobile devices. I hope to buy a Android tablet next year sometime.

Only used Safari browser, although have other installed (Dolphin).

I don’t use the iPad for participate in foruns on a day to day basis – only when travelling, otherwise is basically for browsing. As my vacations just ended :(, back to the good old PC. But you probably know if the site audience significantly uses mobile devices (I also use an android smaprtphone for browsing).

Also – specially if no one else is affected – it seems to me more of a curiosity than a significant problem, as it can be easilly bypassed by inserting one extra line at the first empty line (two intead of one) when posting.

Thanks Geraldine, I feel like I don’t give enough time most days. So much work too little time with family and work ๐Ÿ™‚ I have huge stacks of games in my Gamersgate and Steam accounts that I haven’t even played yet. I’m just trying to get caught up personally, I have the huge task of getting the game listing into a database and then getting it on to the site. Then there is the download area, would be nice to start adding a thumbnail screenshot and descriptions to the files slowly, with there being over 1000 files it will take some time… I have enough work for quite some time. And hopefully I can get it all done by the time Star Citizen is out.

I don’t say thanks enough to the community itself for helping out, I remember when I had to do most of the new game, news and mod postings and now the community does the majority of that. So now I can concentrate on the improvements. Trying to get the site to a state where it makes enough yearly income to move it to a private server, thats my goal and I hope to do this next year sometime. We’ll see, SSC gets about 2-5 new users almost every day so its growing.

Look at me getting off topic…

Task I will be doing today is hopefully getting the mainpage done.

      Just an idea:

Maybe you could consider running a dedicated RP server for Star Citizen and make the SC forum section similar to this and this in order to attract Discovery FL people. Unless the Discovery community switch to SC and do it themselves.

If I can get up the funds to have a dedicated SC server I will make one and most definitely would have its own forum area and I would promote it throughout the site. Without knowing the impact of the server side software and what resources it would need I cannot say that I could just piggy-back it on the VPS server I will eventually get. Once I can get some of those questions answered I will be able to see if we can get to that goal.

Still having problems with the quotes D1.

Are you talking about not seeing the quote function when you click the icon? I don’t see the quoting feature do anything most times, you see it magically skip a line and you know its trying to do something. What I usually do is click that ‘lightswitch’ button and turn off the posting gui and it shows the raw bbcode and I put the text between the tags if I did it wrong. Is that what your talking about? I can look into this because it bothers me as well, I think it might be a skin issue?? I have to investigate.

I saw that the other day myself, i’m thinking it could be this application. Because the server is running at 1-3% load and there is plenty of memory and this server is using a more updated version of mysql. I will do some looking into this to see what could cause it.

I updated the configuration file for mysql with some tweaks, I hope this addresses this issue or least limits when it happens. I allotted more memory to various processes in mysql so I hope that resolves this. I did enable slow query logging so maybe we will see some issues with the query taking a long time to execute and I can report the findings to get it resolved.

Ok, did some more digging and I removed all of  the Ping Services addresses from the system, what this does is alert various blog/post aggregation services that something new has been posted. And I moved the flood controls from 10s to 15s. I think this might help with the issue posting, especially the ping service, this I could see being an issue since it needs to contact each provider with the info and that could take time.

So please let me know, if you have a double-posting moment or the post takes a long time to post to the forums. I see this issue from time-to-time so I hope I don’t see it any more. And thinking back this was never an issue on the forums until I upgraded to 3.4 for IP.Board which has this Ping Service stuff that I enabled and filled out, so maybe this will address this problem.

If it is any consolation, my posting seems a bit quicker.

This week and into the weekend I will try to scrap the forum areas for new games and figure out if a download area is needed for them and add them, so at least we can accomidate some of the newer titles/demos that have been cropping up. If there is any games that need a folder and doesn’t please just reply or make a new post in the admin area pls.

Are you thinking of combining the Commercial indie games and Stand alone games forums into one as the lines between the two are becoming so blurred now that it’s becoming hard to tell them apart, with commercial developers starting to use kickstart ect

    • #64105

Yeah I was noticing the confusion as well the other day when I moved Ensign 1 to the commercial area since it was released.

What do you think of this for forum changes, because I really do think it is about the forum labels themselves:

‘Space/SciFi Combat and Simulation Game Discussion’
      ‘Space and Scifi MMO Chat’
‘Free Indie and Open Source Gaming Projects’
      ‘FPS and Tactical Games’
      ‘Mobile and Web Gaming’
      ‘Classic/Retro Space Games’

What I would do is merge all of the topics and posts from ‘Commercial Indie Projects’ to ‘Space/SciFi Combat and Simulation Game Discussion’. I would create a new area and parse the forums for these types of posts and move them to ‘FPS and Tactical’. This way I think we have more coverage and the areas do make sense, you either have a free game or its paid.

What does everyone think about that, you know me i’m always willing to change things to make peoples lives easier, especially mine ๐Ÿ™‚

Going to be upgrading the site software this weekend, every application on the site has new versions and fixes (theme as well) so I will be doing this and there ‘may’ be very short periods of the site acting funny but I shouldn’t need to bring it down during this period. I will post again when it has been completed.

yeah, I have to remake it. For some reason when an update happened it affected the page code. It’s basically issues with the portal code and the page code because I am trying to use the styling from the theme in the tables. No data was lost because that is stored in a database. I just need to rebuild the page, I knew about it just been lazy ๐Ÿ™‚

Plus I need to add like another 500-800 more games to the list and thats a manual process and not looking forward to doing it.

      Update 5/31/13

      Small update but its something:

      – Updated a few forum area descriptions and links to fix them and make them all more uniform (we must have order) ๐Ÿ˜‰

      – Added a steam group widget to the forum index page and the homepage… so join up!

      – Modified the board index page a little to remove some things that were not real useful

      – Added a ‘recent images’ block to the bottom of the forum categories

      – Fixed some broken downloads (Thanks Skard)

Looking into why my twitter widget isn’t auto-updating and looking into enabling login/sign-up via facebook api as well.

And I will try to get back to working on the game listing, I might redesign it to be less descriptive and maybe only show ‘year’, ‘title’, ‘download/demo’, ‘where to purchase’. But I will talk about this more when I have more to show.

Did some minor maintenance to the forum area, moved forum areas around under the correct content area and added a few new games and sub-forums recently. Edited some of the forum descriptions and fixed a few broken links. Also added the ability for these new areas to post threads to the main page if they are new topics./

As always, I like feedback on the site to improve it and make it more user friendly and easy to find information more quickly.

This weekend I will see what i can put together to least get what I have working again and then I will worry about adding new items. Since I am not a ‘real’ web developer I’m not really sure how to make a forum that would update my database as people enter or least admin/mod enters a new game. Because right now it would be me updating it with a sql query every time. A form would be awesome to have ๐Ÿ™‚

Next time if you could capture a screenshot that would be great for investigation. I will look into the server logs and see if I see anything and force some cache reloads to see if that helps. That steam link on the mainpage is a simple image with a url linked to it so I doubt its that.

Hopefully doing some site updates this weekend with patches.

Some other things I will hopefully be doing this weekend or next week with the holidays here in USA:

      – Redoing some of the Gamersgate ads to more text based to help page load times and will probably add Greenman Gaming titles too since I get discount codes all the time from them and I should pass them on too you guys. Plus this is really the only way SSC builds up some cahs for these darn server hosting fees… so buy games ๐Ÿ™‚

      – Going to create some areas on the mainpage to link to either posts or info pages that will try to leverage the download area for all the developers. The download area does support selling games just no one has tried it yet (so looking for a developer) to help test it. Developer has total control of prices and if they want to stop selling the game or whatever I will touch on this later.

      – Want to really make it more known that SSC gives free forum space to the devs of any games.

      Updates 12/6:

      – Updated site software to latest version and applied all security fixes

      – Updated Tapitalk to the latest version

      – Added a new Steam login method, so now you should be able to register and login via Steam (haven’t tried this personally so let me know if it doesn’t work)

      – Been making some download area tweaks via the server to remedy some download troubles I have seen people have in the logs, people haven’t reported anything but I am seeing issues.

      – Removed all the Gamersgate images from the mainpage and readded only links and also added GOG links as well (so if you buy something use SSC to give me a hand in paying for this thing.)

      – Fixed some random permissions issues with some of the groups so you may have access to something you haven’t before (mainly gallery area issues).

      – Created posts for download area info and developer info, just need to integrate it better with the main page to have it get more attention.

Like always if you see anything that is broken please let me know and screenshots are very helpful if hard to reproduce.

Been a while since I have done some maintenance on the site so over this week you may notice the following:

      – Posts or threads may be deleted if they have no real value to the category
      – User accounts will be deleted if they have been idle for over 2yrs
      – Downloads cleaned up, mainly I will delete versions and keep the latest one
      – Whole forum areas could be deleted if those areas haven’t seen activity in over a year

Why is this being done? Well I have to upgrade SSC to a new platform and I am trying to clean up the DB and threads/posts to make conversion easier. And hopefully speed up the process in doing this because SSC will need to be down during the upgrade because I will be migrating the database and users. So the more I weed out stuff that isn’t needed the better.

In need to do this update by the end of the year or SSC would go offline because the new server updates are not compatible with the software of this site, so I am forced to upgrade.

I’ve noticed a problem with the Pioneer/Pioneer Musical Appreciation Society thread. It seems to be trying to load all of the YouTube videos at once when I try to view it, slowing down my browser to the extent that I can’t finish loading the page. I’m on Linux Mint 18 and the latest Firefox, using NoScript. It doesn’t matter if it’s on or off.

    • #110898

Hmm, that is interesting. Let me see what I can do. I think I have topic pages set to 25 responses per page. Maybe I will lower that so it will limit the amount of responses on a page which should lower load time if there is a lot of responses with youtube videos. I cannot control to my knowledge the loading of the youtube videos I don’t think but I will look into it.

I have been noticing general slowness across the site unless its just me ๐Ÿ™‚ but the whole reason I went to PHP7 was the enhancements and I don’t see much enhancing haha. But over this month I was hoping to speed things up because the DB for SSC is getting larger and I think that is slowing down some things too so I need to optimize it a little better.

Thanks for the heads up Marcel

Ok Marcel, did some investigation and I installed a plugin that only loads the pic for the videos and you have to click the image to play it now. Seems like it loads a lot faster for me now since now its not going out to youtube and prepping the video for playing.

Also I noticed there is a lot of old tags for bbcodes not used on the site no more. I am going to try to clean some of that up as well because it ruins a bit of the experience in the older threads.

I just upgraded bbpress to the latest version and did some cleanup afterwards to make sure all the roles for users in the forums are sent to what they are supposed to be ‘participant’. I will be monitoring this… what was strange is that users that haven’t logged in were being set to blocked which was strange since I don’t have anything in place to auto block i do all that manually. So something was messed up somewhere and I am trying to find it. I am hoping updating all of the forum software and resetting all the permissions fix this anomaly because it has been annoying.

Playing around with themes and colors on a new template. I will be working on this for the next few days so excuse the mess I am working on it, all of the site features should still be working.

The majority of my theme maintenance is done, so thank you for your patience while I was changing everything. WordPress doesn’t have a workbench style mode where I can work on themes without enabling them. So I tried to work as fast as I could. I will still be tweaking through this week and upcoming weekend.

If you see some glaring issues with colors or the style do let me know where the issue is so I can look into fixing it. I tried to keep the colors and styling to the look and feel of my old setup the best I could. My next project is to work on the download section/plugin to see what is wrong with the performance and why I have to create direct downloads for it to work properly without timing out…. I thought I setup everything right on the server but big files do stall after a while which is frustrating and I may have to do a call with the host to see what is going on.

Then I promise I will game my game listing done I been slacking on that for what like a 1.5yrs ๐Ÿ™

I think there is issues with editing a post you have recently posted.

I think there is issues with editing a post you have recently posted.

This should be fixed now, for some reason the default of ‘0’ minutes to edit a post is meant to mean unlimited. For some reason it is shutting off edit. So I set it to 10080min which is a week.

Any chance of going back to a black background with white letters?.

I can try that and see what people think. I will try to make this change this weekend, to see what people think. I can also alternate the color backgrounds like on the forum mainpage if that is better looking too, or should I leave it all black?

Update: Change made, let me know if anyone sees some glaring issues ๐Ÿ™‚
Update: I will try to play with the font a little this weekend as well if I can find the time and see how people like the change I have a few I picked out and I will try one for a few days and see if people complain about it and hopefully I have found one that is easy to read but also scifi themed at the same time.

Nice one D1, think it gives the forum a lot more clarity.

The text looks okay to me but let see if anyone else has any suggestions.

One thing I think members would like would be the ability to edit and delete their posts, if it’s already available then maybe a sticky thread on how to do it.

Edit should be taken care of now, members have the ability to edit there posts up to a week after they make them. I may increase that to like several months or to a year.

Delete, I will look into. That would be a mod since bbpress user roles don’t have this option by default.

Right now the text color is just plain white, I might tone it down to a softer color of white so its easier on the eyes.
