Let me know what you think about SpaceSimCentral.com?

Don’t worry I take criticism very well and I want to make this a great community with everyone’s help. SSC is still being worked on and building content and I have to start pushing the site out to search engines. But overall the layout is pretty close to complete I just need to add a few more blocks and straighten some things up.

Let me know if something should be added or a certain area of the forums needs more categories or I am missing something.

Have fun at Space Sim Central and keep keep flying!

Nice work on getting the 100 files Darkone and thanks for the hard work you putting in to the site.one thing I would suggest,do you think it’s worth having a news thread for general stuff like release date ect as I see there a new retail release of Eve next month?.

I thought that is what the ‘General Space Sim Chat’ area was for. Should I re-label it to something else or add a new area called Space Sim Scene News or something like that?

Feedback is more than welcomed trying to make this a site where people chat about the best game gender in the world ๐Ÿ™‚ So anything I can do to make conversation happen the better it is for everyone else. So keep it coming..

Working on the files I want to add quite a few more I wanted to go on a Demo hunt for space sims and start to get them uploaded or least the most popular ones that is. I have plenty of HD space for the site like 200+ GB its the bandwidth which I can control if needed but so far not an issue.

It’s getting more people here that will be my issue. Since the site is new it will take some time for people to notice it so I just hope word of mouth helps the site out because got too many kids (5 of them) to spend money on advertising ๐Ÿ™‚ But I plan on keeping this running as long as I possibly can. Just for the simple fact I hate trying to find a patch or some mod that I used to play a few years back and cannot locate it. I am hoping I can create a site that can be an answer to that problem and also be a nice spot to discuss all the space games out there. Until I went looking I never knew there was so many

I am looking at a gallery mod for the website but need to wait until it is more stable and I also want to build more content and install the next version of the portal and phpbb3 before I add that because once I do the next version I don’t want to change the site for sometime if I can help it.

Any plans for a game review database in the future?.

Hmmm that is a good idea Pinback. I can go about this a few ways. Let me know what you think of the ways. I know I am limited on what I can do because of my php experience and there isn’t a direct mod for a reviewing system that I have found.

But here are a few ways I could implement it:

      1. Install the knowledge base mode and make a section for reviews – (I would probably have to create a knowledge base group and allow permissions etc… so could be a control issue with people with edit permissions)

      2. Make a reviews forum – (This is the easiest to implement)

      3. Create a separate html style page and link to or embed all reviews on to that page/multiple pages. – (Not to hard to do but then users would have to submit and I would have to transfer the code)

      4. Install MediaWiki (http://www.mediawiki.org) and create a review area on the wiki since I have hopes to create a wiki later to cover the history of all the space sim games this would be something I will be doing anyway. (Some complexity but want to do it anyway)

      Any other ideas to implement?

Thanks for the opinions and keep them coming.

I was thinking alone the lines of the underdogs or moby games sits where you have a description of the game,a box shots.credits, released date, formats it was for,any know links and as Solnicaris suggested some screen shots.

I don’t know anything about web design, but Could it be done as a standard template?.sort of fill in the blanks.them a review forum would be the way to go with it,as it would allow user to add comments/links ect.

I just setup the Wiki yesterday on my day off and now i need to figure out how to use it ๐Ÿ™‚ But I wanted to be able to have to categories:

      1) Game Reviews (self explanatory)

      2) Game knowledge library (used to gather info on all space games published… what a feat that will be)

Since I have never configured or used a wiki I have a bit of a learning curve on this and will probably take me at least 1-2wks to figure out the ins/outs of the software. So if there is anyone that has experience with MediaWiki software please let me know.

I will definitely make a post on the Alien movies probably tonight or tomorrow. I will do it all up with clips and info etc… I didn’t know it was the 30th anniversary? Were getting old Pinback, I remember watching this when it came out on Betamax format. For the youngsters out there that was before VHS ๐Ÿ™‚

On the Q&A section that is a good idea and will definitely write that down. I was going to do a small site upgrade very shortly which will entail a bit of work so I will do it then. I will discuss this upgrade in another thread there will be a lot of things I will be adding to the site. Hopefully very soon because I am taking next week off.

I like the site, and enjoy reading posts and jumping into conversations. One thought I have been having, is that the site seems a little spread out. Is too much being covered? It is called Space Sim Central, but there are plenty of games that don’t fit that definition. And what is that definition?

Anyways, just some thoughts. It is always good to have a large, broadly defined community, but focus can also be good. I know not which is better.

      Nice observation Cambragol.

I guess that is $1,000,000 question what really is a space sim? People can see this in many ways, it could be a 3D newton physics style game or a literal simulation of space flight. Or it could actually be any game is a simulation of space because we really don’t have any experience up their so everything is a simulation.

For example here are some definitions of a simulation:

      Quote:

      1. imitation or enactment, as of something anticipated or in testing.

      2. the act or process of pretending; feigning.

      3. an assumption or imitation of a particular appearance or form; counterfeit; sham.

      4. Psychiatry. a conscious attempt to feign some mental or physical disorder to escape punishment or to gain a desired objective.

      5. the representation of the behavior or characteristics of one system through the use of another system, esp. a computer program designed for the purpose.

Now the way I could interpret #2 is whenever I play any space game I am in the act of pretending it is real ie: simulation ๐Ÿ™‚

But to get back to the other comment about spreading out the content. I have wondered that myself. But with SSC being so young in terms of being on the web. I’m trying to capture more people and more thoughts to get the community going and then I will be able to observe what is being talked about most and rank things appropriately and then drop things that aren’t really conversational pieces for the community.

Plus I know I cause a lot of work for myself because I really do want to make SSC a place that if you are looking for a game you can find it or some of the knowledgeable people here can steer them in the right direction. For me it’s building the knowledge around all of these games that will engage people and want them to participate. Trust me if there is anyone that wants to not have to cover so much its me ๐Ÿ™‚ I do a lot of research and scouring of the web to find content.

It is really nice to see people lending a hand in finding projects and giving opinions and that’s really all I’m looking for. Because I want to play some games to ๐Ÿ˜† But this is also a passion so I have fun at the same time getting those Q&A’s and finding the latest open source project etc.

The biggest thing I have enjoyed is actually getting developers here and talking with the community about their games and some are regular visitors like Farcodev and C0mas. I do want to do some consolidation of some forums and I will look into that when I do the site update soon, least make the list smaller so it is easier to navigate.

      Oh, almost forgot:

I will make a thread for this just trying to figure out where to put it? Thinking under the general space chat.

Thanks everyone for the support and comments I do take it all in and try to make SSC better for the community.

1 Change the background colour from white/blue grey to black with white lettering, don’t know what any one else thinks about this but for some reason I think the white/grey background does not look right for a sci-fi site.

2 A Hal like red eye (from 2001)to indicate whos online instead of the band.

3 Some sort of coloured percentage bar for the game which are in development so as you can see how far along they are.

Hmm this might be doable depending on the style that is chosen and if I can find a good image to reflect Hal9000. We can come back to this one once we choose a style.

      PINBACK wrote:

Now this would be great but have no clue on how to get that info to begin with. I would need developer feedback on this. Or maybe a simple addition to the forum description with Status: <Released>, <Under Development>, <Alpha>, <Beta>, etc…

The above is doable and pretty easy to implement on the forum descriptions. On individual topics that would be tougher and would need to be added manually to the post on ever new addition.

      —-

I was going to work on posting some links in the forum descriptions back to the perspective gallery and I will add something for release status as well and people can tell me what they think.

I am hoping to please everyone with the present style (ProSilver SE) which will still be the site default and and a darker style that people could switch to if they wish after registration. I cannot promise anything yet but will try. I am not to graphically inclined but if someone is I can show them a pic of the style I might use and if someone could craft a logo it would be much appreciated ๐Ÿ™‚

Right now I have setup a test server on my USB stick and I work on it on my free time at work and at home. I will be trying to do the following (just a heads up):

      – Upgrade phpbb3 (forum software) to latest version. I’m three versions behind and there is now over a thousand fixes/enhancements I don’t have, not counting security holes plugged.

      – Upgrade portal to latest version compatible with phpbb (still waiting on its release its 90%+ done now).

      – Work on styles and mod integrations (including download mod).

      – Improve security with tougher registration questions, you guys will love this stuff. Basically if your not a scifi fan your in trouble when answering these questions they will be all about the games ๐Ÿ™‚

      – Consolidate and make a few new areas. I will do this prior to upgrade to make it easier for me. So this will happen over the next month or so. So feedback is appreciated on forum categories and layout.

The main focus is the forum/portal upgrade to fix all the flaws and security issues with the site and people should see a performance increase as well.

Your improvements sound very good Darkone ๐Ÿ™‚ The registration quiz should put a stop to the ad bots at any rate. I noticed they pop up from time to time on the Frontier Forum and try to sell you all sorts of junk. I dread the day these things are developed with sophisticated AI routines, then there will be no escape ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

I also noticed there was some mention about actual content of the site, for example talking about games not within the space Sim genre. I believe the site should stay focused mainly on space themed games, but allow for “fuzzy edges” too as sometimes it’s nice to have a little variety. Speaking as a space & flight sim fan, I think these two really go hand in hand, so the inclusion of aircraft related stuff is fine by me, even if it’s just a little section out on the “fuzzy edge” of the forum.

    • #61925

I do have the flight sim forum area, near the bottom of the forum page and that was all I planned for that genre of games unless people need more. The content of the site I was thinking about adding or changing is the following:

      – Creating a Classic/Vintage area for space games.

      – Creating a Space Story/Roleplay area for the creative people.

      – Probably going to combine the Community and Indie forums into one area.

Then I need to catch up on my moderating and sift through the posts and move them around to the right areas or delete some not worth keeping. I will probably do all this stuff this weekend. So if people have any more ideas on making the forum area easier to use just let me know ๐Ÿ™‚

That does sound like a good idea for a logo, I will be putting my paint skills to the test doing that stuff ๐Ÿ™‚ But over the next few weeks I will give it a try. Going to be working on sifting through the posts and delete the ones that are not relevent any more. I also want to push all images from the gallery so that will take some time too.

Was thinking the other night that if I combine the indie and community forums I might mess with any links out there that link back to SSC. But I only plan on doing this once, I like the general layout right now and think its pretty solid for now.

Darkone, you keep asking for opinions, and I cannot give you any specifics (other than to point out that you already have one of the most attractive and most functional forums I know).

However, I do have a general comment… without a specific solution: I get lost easily at SSC.

I have no problem with the use of Three-Letter Acronyms (TLA’s) inside a thread or post, but using then in titles is a good way to obfuscate content. What the heck are MMOGs and 4x Games and all the rest of the jargon here? How would a person even learn these TLA’s?

(OK, so I figured out what a 4x game is, but I cannot figure out the logic about why some games are called 4x while others are not… the term does not seem to exactly follow the literal definition).

In other words… the jargon itself is confusing.

So any efforts you invest in making your sections and titles more descriptive (perhaps with Alt/hover text?) would help those of us who don’t know what everybody else is talking about half the time.

      ๐Ÿ™‚

PS: I think that your logo or banner should include a Switzerland metaphor, because SSC is open to everyone, like a Junker base or a Freeport. (Or, maybe, an Istanbul metaphor for the pirates in the crowd).

I don’t know how you would represent Switzerland graphically. Maybe work in a nice picture of a girl in a dirndl, like the St. Pauli Girl, or something? You could use a popup bubble that says, “SSC is like Switzerland… we welcome everyone!”

Space Sim Central is like Switzerland… we welcome everyone!

I am hoping to address that in acronyms in the next update of the portal. Because phpbb forums doesn’t have a acronym system. The portal that i use does have one and I planned on setting it up. Just waiting for the latest version to do my work on since i have issues with the database entries for the portal and bringing them forward into a newer version.

And I want to make sure Bullwinkle your only ‘getting lost’ when it comes to terminology correct? Or is the site not easy to navigate?

i would like to think SSC is open to anyone that wants to learn about space games. But another side of me kinda likes the exclusiveness to know that most everyone on the forum is a die hard fan like myself. I know I don’t advertise the website much because I liked the focused feel and information that is gathered. But i also want to make the community bigger so maybe we can have both ranges of users without effecting focus.

I’m trying to keep the website as simple as I can but also have some features to keep peopl occupied and of course coming back. I know at one point I thought about a news letter but it was way to much effort for me.

While an acronym system could help, I think it is really more about paying attention to what you write at the top. All it takes is spelling things out and a few words about the topic(s) (and/or examples) at the top of the forum listing.

As they taught you in grammar school, spell it out the first time, and put the Three Letter Acronym (TLA) in parentheses. After that, everybody knows what you are talking about.

      Darkone wrote:

Right. The site is easy enough to follow… but, other than “Space Sim”, I do not know what most of the other jargon means. And I have been following both sci-fi and games for a while, so it is not as though I am a complete newbie. Honestly, I don’t have a clue where you even pick up these acronyms. Do they come from magazines? Game-oriented web sites? TV? ๐Ÿ˜•

You mentioned a registration quiz, so here is: Quiz Proposal #1 (Easy)

But, wait… does that mean “no Pauli Girl” in your banner? (heavy sigh)

But I can make sure i’m not using acronyms in the categories and do my best to not put it in my titles at least.

The acronym feature will underline anything I put in there and when people mouse-over it, they will get some description or link. Don’t be so hard on yourself, D1. Bullwinkle may have a point but you’re not doing anything wrong either.

This site IS a niche site, catering only to a very small (but fanatically loyal!) sub-section of the gaming population. Most of us here, as true enthusiasts of the genre, know our topic inside-out so short-hand and jargon is only to be expected; communication between members flows more smoothly and new ideas can be expressed and topics discussed more easily within a mutually understood framework of common references.

On the other hand, as Bullwinkle has pointed out, some of these terms can be a little bit of a barrier to entry for new people. The key, I believe, as with most things, is in striking the right balance.

Don’t fear jargon, Bullwinkle. At first a new person may not know what a 4X game is, but given time and an exploration of the site they should very soon come to understand – it’s all there. Failing that, ask. There are lots of really friendly people hereabouts who are more than happy to say hello to anyone who wants to learn about their hobby, and to either explain something or point them in the right direction so they can find out for themselves. It’s unreasonable to expect someone to visit a place like this and understand everything right away, as it is with any new hobby a person might pick up; there are always going to be things to learn and long-term practitioners will always have developed a way of speaking about their subject matter than might baffle the observer.

This actually applies to some of the ‘games’ you’ll find us talking about here, too. While we do play a lot of arcade-style shooters, some of the hard-core like to really get into the simulation aspect and ‘play’ things like Orbiter that require some skill and a LOT of learning actual real-life knowledge of things like escape velocities, gravity coefficients and even orbital mechanics. This is not all aliens and laser guns! Among the drooling over ship-types and conversations about enormous fleet battles you will find we veer occasionally into very dry and heavyweight discussions in such fields as cosmology and astrophysics – it’s just who were are, and this website is all about celebrating that. The thrill of these pursuits is in the learning just as much as it is in the playing, so from our perspective having a new person scratch their head at a few pieces of jargon and having to work out a few things for themselves is not such a bad thing. ๐Ÿ˜‰

It’s not that we won’t help, or don’t want to help – it’s just that our own journeys of discovery have taken us to some amazing places, and we wouldn’t want to rob anyone new of that experience if we can possibly help it.

However, maybe there should be a small guide to the Space-Sim genre that new people can be directed to that will help them find their feet. Like the ‘Newbies Guide for FFED3D’ that’s currently being written, but covering the genre as a whole, and perhaps including a few of the more [un]common terms of reference used between seasoned veterans?

Something to think about, anyway. :ugeek:

I like these types of discussions to get all the feedback and most of the time with the input you can please everyone and make things simpler. I know one of my goals is to try to get people to play and love these great games and also not alienate games themselves. For so long communities were separated by game or flame wars happened between game communities, this is counter productive to the overall community. We are all gamers and have a passion and if new players to these games can see the passion and the wealth of info they will be more apt to get involved and post and have fun.

Stardreamers suggestion we can all work on as a community and it could even be a nice brain dump for people and I will probably even link the post into the welcome message I send to everyone when they sign up to read.

Here is a brief look at the security check during registration. This should stop non space gamers in their tracks because you could guess but it will take you some time ๐Ÿ™‚

      [hsimg]http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/7872/sscreginfo.jpg[/hsimg]

Bots can get by the captcha images with ease. And I’m trying to make all aspects of the site space themed in some way. So thought this would be a nice touch and if the people pay attention at all on what they are reading in the forums questions like these will be easy.

We’ll get SSC to that point of bliss sooner or later. Hey it’s only been about a 1.5yrs now SSC has been around so there is time for improvement. ๐Ÿ™‚

Bullwinkle, You might have gotten me on 3 of them I would have to do some research on. Maybe you should post these in the general area and let people have some fun with them or in the poll/survey forum depending on what you post. I know myself when I do finish all the site work and can have fun again I wanted to start a ‘name that tune’ game where I pull music tracks from games and you have to name them ๐Ÿ™‚

OK, sounds good. If you have an easy way to move or copy the quizzes then please feel free (and edit appropriately)… I would have to re-write the messages, including the links, since they are mostly non-text.

I intended the quizzes as a joke, but the second “Advanced” quiz does have a few obscure pics. I am sure that you know all but one of the characters although you may not recognize the pictures.

One character truly is a rarity, but she is my all-time-favorite sci-fi character ever, so I had to put her in the mix.

Which ones did you have trouble with?

As for your quiz, I am afraid that I would fail miserably. I have never heard of half of those games. And, also, …

… what does “MMO” stand for? ๐Ÿ™‚

(My guess is “Massively Multiplayer Or something”. However, if that were correct, then what would be the difference between that category and the “Single or Multi Player” category? ๐Ÿ˜•

Really? If you scroll down the list of forums on the forum page you would have had to see some of those titles ๐Ÿ™‚ Here is a general overview of my thinking behind it. And as always very open to suggestions and opinions. I do want to make the quiz a little challenging to prevent spammers and rude users. As long as you are in touch with the space gaming scene or scifi you should be able to answer these questions.

In the forums you have these categories:

      – Welcome to SpaceSimCentral.com

      – Space Sim Gaming

      – Standalone Space Sims

      – MMO Space Sim Games

      – Flight Simulators Chat

      – Modding and Coding

      – Space DOORS/MUD Games

Under those categories are individual forums. Now for this example of the security question I have taken some older games that any fan of the genre should know Freelancer, Elite, Wing Commander III and Independence War 2 which are all single player (SP) games. And then I list more recent games Massive Multiplayer Online (MMO) games like Black Prophecy, Jumpgate Evolution, Infinity and EVE Online.

Every single one of these games has a forum area in the forums (except Elite) under either (standalone space sims) or (MMO space sim games). I thought it was a little too easy actually. Because you have the games listed right in front of you.

Now I can add more questions/answers entries to the registration piece so there is a variety and not just this one question. I just haven’t thought up any more yet. But do feel free to donate a question with at least 5-6 answers in it. But they do need to be space/scifi related in nature.

      Quote:

Yeah thought about that a little last night and I wanted to try a little something and design a professional page around it kind of like the FAQ for the forum (faq.php). I will make a post to take in FAQ questions and answers and I will start building the page. I will make it so pics and videos will be placed into it. Once I get some FAQ Questions and answers I will start making the form. I wanted to make it a forum so we can add to it but also not have it a thread so it gets off topic.

Advertising its existence is easy. I think you will like how it is done and I can also add it to the portal main page as well.

Oh Bullwinkle I will move that post for you and make it its own thread, i’ll see if I can keep you as the topic starter on it.

Well, ok, not really. It was a small exaggeration to avoid having to explain that, while I have heard of the names of all of those games, the only place I have seen them is on SSC. Therefore, a quiz asking me to categorize stuff that I will only learn about after I pass the quiz… it kinda makes my head hurt. But the short version is that I would never have been able to pass that quiz without having already seen SSC.

      MP vs MMO

Thank you for clarifying Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) games, but my question stands: How do you differentiate between MMO and any other Multiplayer (MP) game? I mean, all MP games are “online”, and most support very large numbers of players.

      Moving my quizzes

Thanks, but I just figured out how to do it myself using the Edit button! I will do it, then clean up my messages with proper links.

Now, if only you had a feature so that I could obscure hints and solutions…

      One more comment

I see that you have updated the list of forums since the last time I looked. Nice update! I love what you have done there, and I think that I would be far less confused about the site layout if I had seen those explanations the first time that I visited SSC.

Spoiler BBcode… I can make that happen. I just have to locate the code somewhere on the net and I will get a button added to the posting window. Or at the least will be in the site upgrade (finished product).

Ah but the try definition of MMO is a persistent online experience that continues on and things could happen to your world or your guild or you while you are not online. In MP games this isn’t so unless the owner of the server does it manually. Once you leave a MP game no ill effects can happen to you.

Wait… so you have to play the game 24×7 or risk “consequences”?

Brrrr…. just the idea of that sends chills down my spine. How evil!

Well, in any case, I would obviously flunk your registration quiz. That may be intentional but, just in case it is not, you might want to consider a different kind of quiz ;).

EDIT: OK, now I feel kind of stupid, because it just occurred to me that anyone can read SSC… the registration is only for required for posting. So, yeah, your quiz should be just fine!!!

Not hard at all. I wanted to base the quizzes off of basic space gaming knowledge or something easy to find out by either looking here or some where else. The question should have at least 5 answers. One or more being correct and of course some wrong choices. I was going to work on some more this week sometime, wanted to have about 3-4 different quiz options for the registration page. But they need to be either space game based or scifi based questions.

Spammers and other sorts of people really ruin good communities and can take away from the fun of the site. I know some people may not get the question right the first time and I will put a disclaimer down at the bottom that if they cannot register because they can’t answer anything then they can email me specifically and I will take care of it.

Because I run into the problem where I can start to ban IP addresses but the spammers seem to get different ones every time and if I block a range of IP’s I could be blocking a legit person from ever registering. So these little quizzes I think will help a lot in that department. And I hope I don’t offend anyone but I look at SSC as more of an adult/older gamer site so I also don’t want 10yr olds posting crazy messages either. So I try to have questions that include games before their time.

My reasons may be flawed but I have seen good sites crippled to spam and rude players and I work to hard on SSC to have this happen. I have zero tolerance for spammers and I don’t even warn them they get instantly banned. It’s a shame I have to be a hard ass on people, but if people don’t respect others I get them ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

I have been working on the SSC site update in my spare time and I have already let people see some of it in the new links page. Besides all the code/mod updates i was planning to add the following:

      – New space gaming FAQ page.

      – Add a spoiler BBCode to the posting window.

      – Possibly add social bookmarking links to posts so people can easily spread the word about good info.

      – New security measures.

      – Removal of the arcade mod. Don’t see a lot of people use it and it takes up space in the DB.

      – Removal of the store page or at the least a redesign of it. I’m not really in this for the money but if this type of stuff can make running the site less cost on me thats a good thing ๐Ÿ˜‰

      – Find a good way to provide a backup scenario for the website. Right now I backup the DB usually every week and a whole site backup maybe happens once a month. I have to think of a better disaster recovery plan.

      – Work of website SEO to get better placement in the search engines and possibly rename forum categories and pages to reflect on what people would search on.

      – Wanted to work on a submit form for the link area. But that will take some time since I have to code the whole page myself.

      – Add a page for advertising on SSC (request)

I want to get all this done before I go on vacation in July, so I have some time but not really ๐Ÿ™‚ Since there will need to be lots of testing on all the changes. I hope to go live the last week of June to let the site be up for a week before I go.

Any other thoughts on fixes and updates are appreciated and will do my best to get them in there.

How about a cafepress site where you sell t-shirts, coffee mugs, mouse pads, etc. with the Space Sim Central logo on them. If you mark things up a bit you could make a little extra ching to help keep the lights on.

A way to generate recurring forum traffic would be to buy some bargain bin games and then have a contest or a raffle for them. I just picked up Starlancer for $3.99, for instance. Once a month send out an email with a link “post in this thread to enter to win a copy of XXXXX game” to all forum members to try and regenerate interest for members who have wandered off over time.

I have definitely thought about the game giveaway option. Once I get the site running right and work on the whole SEO thing to get more traffic pushed to the site I will try to do something like that. I am on a very limited budget so I can’t go hog wild… ๐Ÿ™‚

I would love to hold some sort of competition and would like to award prizes for the top gamers or maybe I can get some developers to host some prizes as well its a few things I was looking into especially with a few games coming out soon.

On the CafePress. I have never heard of this website or service until you mentioned it. Definitely a interesting. I will look into this and probably start a thread on this to see what people would be interested in and of course any text/images they would want to see and maybe some free stuff to the person(s) you have the best ideas or images for these things.

Thanks very much for that feedback Kestral I will definitely revisit this very soon.

This is actually already there, if you go into any post and as you are reading each one you will see in the upper right of the post a ‘quote’ button and a ‘!’ button. That ‘!’ button is the report a post button, if you mouse-over that icon you will see it.

I have been putting off some maintenance that I have been meaning to do to remove a mod that isn’t needed. And to do some general cleanup in the root of the webserver. Quick Reply is often abused, and can quickly make a mess out of a forum. I am hoping that DarkOne intentionally omitted it.

In this thread, perhaps a Quick Reply might be sometimes useful (like for your suggestion, for example). In most threads the feature causes more trouble than it solves.

However, changing the word “Quote” to “Reply” might be helpful to users who don’t understand the importance of using Quote when making a Reply. But even that is optional, since there is already a “Post a Reply” button, and since most people quickly become accustomed to the way that the forum works. ๐Ÿ™‚

Quick Reply is an option, but I disabled it on purpose when I created the forums just because I thought it would spur better conversation because it might cause the members to read more of the posts before posting. And in quick reply not all of the bbcodes and quoting functionality is there.

There is definitely a lot of people coming to SSC, its just getting them to post and stop hiding in the shadows. I used to have to really work hard at pulling in all the latest info on games and projects and now most of the areas do get some coverage because the members help out a lot in finding the news on their favorite games/projects. So it is coming together nicely and I hope to get a real solution soon for the Knowledge Base.

Because the KB that I have seems like it is some work to maintain and get things published on. I might go back to MediaWiki since there is a PHPBB bridge that is being worked on which isn’t perfect yet but its a start. I just need to read up more on the whole security aspect of the wiki. Because I think the KB is a nice thing to have its just that it needs to be tied to the site database and it takes up some space. But this is for a different post.

That is a nice website you have there Dramacius and it’s ok to post links to anything in a post as long as its relevant to the discussion and of course the content is generally kid friendly ๐Ÿ™‚

I have thought about using WordPress for a frontend to SSC, I just would need to have a good bridge to connect the two and use the user base out of phpbb3 for wordpress. The mod I use for the portal (stargate portal) is ok but its not too flexible and there is really no SEO behind the code at all. I thought about wordpress or another blogging software that integrates into phpbb because then maybe I wouldn’t need a KB/wiki for the games. I could just create a blog page for each of the games. I basically trying to find the easiest to maintain but a tight integration as well and that seems to be the issue. With my template and graphic skills at a 10% level I stink at styling anything. Thought about paying someone to create a theme and logo for the site to give it a more WOW factor ๐Ÿ™‚

But I have no problem people posting good examples of setups that they either use or know about. I am just trying to get a good layout that will help more people communicate and also get the word out better.

Did some looking into the phpbb3 and wordpress bridge and there is something being worked on here: http://www.wp-united.com

Looks very promising and I would probably at the least wait for the next release before starting some testing but would prefer v1.0 to install on the site itself. But looking at the tight integration of WP and PHPBB with this bridge does have some appeal and can be really useful in advertising some of the great projects inside ๐Ÿ™‚

As for my opinions on Space Sim Central. Well they are only good, I would have to dig very deep to criticise this site.

I was comparing SSC to sites like WCIC and FS Communities which have over 5000+ users but they have also been around for 5-10yrs now. But I cannot complain about SSC much at all. I do no advertising and count on just word of mouth to get the job done. And I have noticed that if you are nice and respectful to developers they are actually quite helpful and usually jump at interaction with the community… cool concept ๐Ÿ™‚

I know I find myself in a bit of a pickle where I look at the SSC community and see it growing and I want to try to make spreading the word easier and want to use FB, Twitter and other sites to just help promote these great games. And now I get to the point where I have to search out new tools. Because I don’t think phpbb will meet SSC’s needs much longer. But I know moving the sites content to entirely different format will be a huge undertaking for me.

But I will make more posts in the admin area about possible changes and upgrades and moves to another server. Because I think 1and1.com isn’t going to meet my hosting needs soon. Because of their DB size allowance of 100mb, I see that GoDaddy is giving out 1GB DB’s now so might just to them.

If you are considering going to a different source I would recomend vBulletin if you have the funds for it, it is by far the most powerful software option available. There are also scripts available to convert from PHPBB3 to vBulletin so you wouldn’t loose any users or Posts.

I have been thinking about their new 4.0 publishing version, because the features and the CMS that sits on top looks great. Just it’s almost $300 and you only get support for a year. Right now SSC pays for itself with the Google Adsense ads, I get a check every few months that pays for my hosting. Basically I stink at any marketing, i’m just a gamer and not a business/marketing guru. I will be trying harder to get some advertisers so I can update the site’s software I hope in 2011.

PHPBB is one of the best free software packages out there but everything you want besides the main forum has to be created and kept alive by members of the community. that means a lot of the “modules” used end up being abandoned and breaking forums. To go with something like Invision or vBulletin, they have many of the common modules in the standard packages and also develop many extra modules themselves so are less likely to be abandoned.

I don’t know what WCIC is but I think FS is FreeSpace

Isn’t phpbb the one that advertises itself as “THE #1 FREE, OPEN SOURCE BULLETIN BOARD SOFTWARE”?

But I still don’t get it. Other forums do not work as well as yours. If phpbb is missing something important, then you do a terrific job of covering up the flaws. Are you wanting features or capabilities that phpbb does not offer?

And what are “WCIC” and “FS Communities”?

EDIT: @Dramacius, thanks for the clarification. I have seen Invision and vBulletin forums that look like toys compared to SSC, but that perhaps that is due to DarkOne’s good eye and diligent grooming.

Yes, and for the most part it does a great job. I have been using it since day one. I have seen some mods on some other forums that I do like that phpbb doesn’t have or the mods are broken. I am trying to teach myself some php/mysql in my spare time to create some functionality I would like but that is slow going.

Somethings I am really looking for SSC:

      – A mysql backup system that can be scheduled but can run on shared hosting (ie: no access to cron jobs)

      – I wanted separate DB’s for the forum, kb/wiki, download area, links, and gallery. But also have a bridge between them all so you only need one login to use them all. I wanted more DB’s just because I hate knowing that if the master DB goes to crap I could lose months of work. I try to manually backup everyday since my host doesn’t provide the service.

      – Would like more hook-ins to services like steam, facebook and twitter

      – A nice tagging system, I think there is mods for this. But SSC has a few already and upgrading the site is a real pain when you think about all the mods. I would love a solution that just has it all in it out of the box ๐Ÿ™‚

But overall I am satisfied with phpbb, and something would have to come along to WOW me away from it because it has been really stable for me so far. Right now my real need will probably be a new host provider soon because of the database size issue and I hate their email system.

Oh WC CIC is the wing commander fan site and the FS is the freespace community (hardlight productions), I have been visiting them for years. And the links are in the link list (near the bottom).

That makes sense. However, I have never seen a great integrated system. Most “integrated” systems are cobbled together from disconnected parts anyway… operators seem to face a lot of work with maintaining all of them, AFAIK.

Regarding multiple databases, it is actually both easier and safer to use a single database. Take backups, of course. A stronger database (SQL Server or Oracle) uses transactions, so that almost any error can be repaired. Of course, there is a bit of learning curve with any of this, but you can do it.

I think the main thing Darkone is looking at is going from Free forum software which doesn’t contain very much besides the base forum system ( which is excellent and the best FREE system around ) and switching to a Pay CMS Package such as vBulletin which because it is Pay will have more functionality to it.

    • #61981
      sscadminsscadmin

Next year I will probably build up several different instances of sites like WP, Joomla and anything else and try to move SSC’s site content into these and see what people think of them. I need to setup a test webserver at home to test database migration stuff anyway, because that is usually the biggest headache. I recently upg the portal (this summer) and overall went ok but lost some data because of the database changes the portal software made.

I guess its the whole tight knit integration I am looking for. I know phpbb mods are mainly hacks of the code to give you functionality. But I would like to have some sort of plugin system where install/uninstall is easy. There is so much manual process to phpbb. But I have to admit I am at least comfortable with it and know the files.

I was planning on moving it once I figure out really what should go in the news bit. I have been thinking about this criteria to be considered news?

      – New games/development found

      – Patch and game releases

I will position it and move it probably today or tomorrow. I was debating to get rid of the newest thread block to save space. If I put the news block on auto-scroll it takes up less space but if I put fixed then it will take up more space and show all the threads I select (right now up to 10 threads). Only pain about the implementation (of the portal block) is that there is no end date that I can say drop it from the list. I have to manually edit this list all the time which isn’t a real big deal but another thing to do ๐Ÿ˜‰

I didn’t post anything on it yet but for those people that have mobile devices I recently installed the tapatalk integration on SSC so if you get their app you should be able to surf the forums a lot better now. I cannot test this currently because I don’t have a mobile device that uses apps.

Sound good for the news categories.

I think you should keep it just to the basic items like date, name, website or forum section.

I’ll see what I can do. I am limited on what the code does. Currently when you make a post if your an admin you get several options like normal, sticky, announcement, global. With the portal I have two more options news announcement and news global. All it does is flag the post and displays it.

There is currently there is very little in customization for this area. I will look at the code block and see if I can just edit the code to display only the title and date posted. Another downfall to this block is the fact I cannot just specify a ‘news’ forum area and just have it auto-populate from there. Instead I have to flag every post which is a pain.

Another reason that phpbb really limits me. ๐Ÿ™‚

Yeah I think I need a different web solution for that instead of phpbb. Only critical issue with that is data migration into the new system ๐Ÿ˜ฎ That I think would be the biggest hurdle and when/if I attempt that I will switch providers at the same time since GoDaddy offers more for the price over 1and1 my current host.

I have been really looking at vBulletin Publisher Suite as the solution for SSC’s problems. Sure wish they had some trial software I could use to test all the features and see if it meets my needs.

I have been skeptical on doing anything with the RPG/RTS/4x area because it does cover a few areas of games. But on the other had people might have a difficult time deciding on where to post something if they have an indie game but it falls in the rpg/rts/4x realm. That’s why I thought about just combining them and really make the indie areas a ‘catch all’ for all games and just separate by commercial and free/open.

I have thought about this a lot personally. I guess I would need more feedback on that before I just do it. Yeah people can see all the subforum listsings under the forum heading.

In a way I am trying to consolidate but also make it easier for people to post in the correct area and be able to find things with ease. I lay everything out on one page right now so people can see what is out or coming to make games a little more noticeable. Maybe I could have a ‘Featured Games’ area where I pull out fan favorites to get some special attention.

Not sure overall but I am definitely open for discussing it. Because all I want is for the people that use SSC to have a easy time finding what they need. Only thing is that it will only process the forums and nothing else on the website. Still contemplating getting the vbulletin publisher edition as well. I won’t make that choice until the summer or shortly after. Have any opinions on how the forums should look? Because I have thought about just making a couple categories and then nesting the forums into those areas as subforums. to clean it up and not make the forum list so long. Only thing is that it will only process the forums and nothing else on the website. Still contemplating getting the vbulletin publisher edition as well. I won’t make that choice until the summer or shortly after. I know right now my immediate changes is the wiki and possible domain move because 1and1 hosting isn’t giving me everything I would like in a host. I would love nightly backups and bigger mysql database allotment.

Cool that sounds good, only Im Android-less for at least another 6 months until I can get out of my bloody contract ๐Ÿ™‚ But I aim to get the HTC Desire, or the newer one.

      Thanks Grimm

I spent a few hours last night trying to set it up and doesn’t look to bad for a WP newb like me.

Some things I still want to do or try to figure out to do:

      – Change header font (title) to SSC’s font ‘backlash’

      – Maybe play with backgrounds to see if I can give it an outer space or gaming feel

      – Work on colors for the page (a bit darker) and border lines

      – Would like to widen the theme about 100-150px

      – Figure out a way to display a random screenshot from gallery

      – And of course work on blog content

Hi Darkone! I still love the site, even more so since the upgrade. Looks Great but have one minor suggestion.

On the Forum Page can you remove the (site links:) tag at the beginning,or better yet put a regular menu bar in its place.

It somehow just doesn’t look right. Did I mention ? I Love your site !

      Thanks for the feedback VinhDucanh

I haven’t put too much effort into the styling in the forums because I have still be contemplating the purchase of a site wide style for SSC but it would cost me about $100 so I just haven’t done it yet because people haven’t given me to much feedback on it. (viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2299)

I’ll see what I can come up with. Usually its sometimes tough finding a mod for menus that goes good with the style itself. Maybe I will try to edit the background to the logo and see if I can add a menu bar to that? I will have to play around and see what I can come up with, but I have to play and write up a review first for Star Ruler and then I will tackle this unless I find an easy fix of course.

Added the new menu bar and removed the old, also edited the search page to remove the google search.

Looks like theirs a graphic problem with the menu bar, theirs black dots in the words.

I notice when I hit Ctrl-F5 it display’s like it should for me. I will try flushing all of the cached images and things when I get home to see if that fixes the problem for people?

What that does is force a reload of a website’s pages and graphics. Most of the time your web browser caches all the images and just display’s it even know there is something new. You can either tell your browser to not cache or always load pages. But as long as the website itself dumps its own cache it should fix itself after a few moments or next visit.

I will add more options to the menu this weekend when I get a moment to have it match the mainpage.

Yo I'm very happy with the site and service.

There's no way I'd be able to track down and compile such a massive list of games for myself so SSC is a valuable resource, when I choose a game I want to be sure it's the best possible choice for me as I like to play a game until it has literally nothing left to give lol.

The selection here is very wide and varied so no matter what specific aspects of space sim play you're looking for, there is always going to be a listed game to fill that desire.

Obviously there are technical issues that pop up in the day to day running of any site but they are minor compared to the good points.

Plus it's nice to just be in the company of other people who like these kinds of games (and the popularity of space sims seems to be on a massive upwards curve atm).

Looking at the thingy at the bottom of the main page I see a total of 129 people (give or take a couple of sneaky adbots loitering around) both logged and guest browsing the site at this moment.

Dude that is pretty good if you ask me.

Just one issue before I forget (time for me to go to the hypersleep chamber), videos… I can't seem to see embedded vids, I just get a white square.

I'm on Firefox if that's any help?

It could easily be something on my end of things.

Anyway yep, thank you Admin for a great service and long may it last.

Kind words SuperbatPrime that I am sure Darkone will appreciate. He does put a lot of effort into the site and doesn't get thanked nearly enough. As for your issue, have you updated flash player ect?

Geraldine – ensure that your Windows is set to 32-bit colour! It needs to be set to at least 16-bit colour, but 32-bit is recommended.

That is the preliminary advice – more may follow.

My apologies to D1 for the thread derailment… heh! We're rather good at that, where I come from.

      That's ok Cody <img src='http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//wink3.gif’ class=’bbc_emoticon’ alt=’;)’ />

I like it when people help others through some rough spots thats what a community is for. But back to the site, yeah there is some hiccups in spots. Like the Download Area, I doubt it is software related and I really do think it might be provider related and I would probably have to move or upgrade to remedy this (i think). Which could be in SSC's future if more people opt for Gold Member accounts.

I do my best to keep the site running tip-top all the time and install software and mod updates as they become available, will more than likely install Blog update (under used by those Gold Members, surprised) and I believe Tapatalk has an update for those mobile users.

On the browser stuff SuperbatPrime, as long as you are running a recent browser, updated on flash player, shockwave and java you should have no issues running any content here. If you see anything on a tech side that I might need to know for other people please share so I can write something up to help those that have viewing issues.

I have been pleased watching SSC grow and it just keeps expanding, I don't think I can remember a day when there wasn't a new member added and that is always good. I am always looking for ideas on how to improve SSC and make it the best resource out there. I know I have been slacking on my game listing and might work on that over Thanksgiving holiday (have next week off), but any tweaks or additions I can make to build a tighter gaming community and resource I am game. I have liked a lot of what IPB has given SSC, now I thik the search tools and tagging (if used right) work extremely well and I have no problems searching the site.

I think the only place where SSC could use lots of help is download area needs some serious attention in the form of game/mod descriptions and it possible thumbnails. That would just make that area be amazing. Maybe I will do 1-3 games a week until I get them all updated. But thanks SuperbatPrime for the kind words and as always please do spread the word about SSC, I do no advertising so this site spreads on word of mouth only.

There is some ajax in some site things but that is more javascript which is handled by the browser and not java console so I believe you are right and don't need Java at all Cody.

I ain't an expert, but pals of mine who are tell me that Java is an easily exploitable security risk. Since I removed it, I've yet to find a website that I cannot use. Apparently, some banking sites still require it – but not mine. It may be different in the land of e pluribus unum.

Not wishing to add to the derailment (a bad habit I picked up from some forum not far away from here <img src='http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_razz.gif’ class=’bbc_emoticon’ alt=’:P’ /> j/k).

Just highlighting this very important piece of information.

For anyone not getting the picture, Java is one of the main, if not the main entry point for malware on the average home computer and it's also just very greedy on your system's resources in general.

So many people have it, never update it and seem to think it's essential… it's not, only a handful of sites and apps still use it.

If you really need to play Minecraft that badly you can always reinstall it when you need it… Otherwise do yourself and your system a favor and give it the boot.
