What games have you bought recently

      .

Pick up a copy of S.T.A.G for my collection, it’s for the Amiga and it’s a bit like a prototype X game but without the graphic.

Also I continue to add slowly to my big box 90s pc game collection with Simon The Sorcerer 1 and 2 and Dungeon Master 2.

Managed to finally get a copy of Vampire the masquerade bloodlines read about the game over the years and apparently it meant to be a really good rpg.

Hmm, lets see, I just purchased a month of EVE, then I got Gothic 3 (love open world RPG’s.) My most recent purchase was Left 4 Dead 2, which is about as fun as the first. 🙂

Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines was ok, I seem to remember a community patch being released that fixed 99% of issues. That being said, its still a bit buggy, loading takes forever imho, and to be frank, I didn’t find the story all that engaging. 😕

I think it was one of those games, made by fans, for fans. YMMV

Only games I have bought recently was Mass Effect 1 ($5 on EA Store) and Star Wolves 3 ($17 in bargain bin).

I play on a Lineage II free server often and I also play the Battle for Wesnoth (great indie game and its free).

The FF14 beta starts on Tuesday and I wanted to play a little LOTRO when its F2P starts.

Main game I am waiting for besides Black Prophecy is GUILD WARS 2 … that game is going to be the ‘one to rule them all’. I will make a post on this game to let you guys decide what you think but this is going to kick ass.

I read there were number of problems with Bloodlines, but my first problem will be actually getting the game installed as it by Activision and my cursed dvd drive will not recognises any of there disks 😆

@ Darkone. Ive been meaning to try Battle for Wesnoth, but I abhore turn based strategy. Give me Rome Total War, or Mount and Blade (which is on sale btw.) for that awesome adrenaline decision making. Im downloading now. Rather hefty download.

@Pinback LOL. Well, I got my copy through steam. So… might try that route. Still 20 bucks tho.

Recent games bought in no particular order:

Minecraft: Indie game that easily suck up time while you’re trying to build a castle. Do a Google and get hooked.

Distant Worlds: Well we all know this one and for some reason it doesn’t do it for me.

Star Trek Online: Got a couple of months of time invested in this one and at the end it left a bitter taste in my mouth. It’s a good game but not nearly enough to do i it. Recent changes may make me sign up for another month though.

Starcraft II: Best RTS around atm. Enough said.

Star Ruler: 4x game that’s growing to be allot of fun.

Dragon Quest IX (DS): Very very good RPG for the handheld.

Puzzle Quest 2 (DS): Not as good as the first imho but still very fun to play.

      Games I’m waiting for:

Diablo 3: Doesn’t really require explanation.

      Black Prophecy: See above.

Star Wars: the Old Republic: See above 2 items:

Guild Wars 2: DarkOne, gotta agree with you on this one, if they live up to their promises this is bound to be a $#!*load of fun.

Grim Dawn: RPG that should be fun. Made by the guys that did Titan’s Quest, which is only second to Diablo 2 in it’s genre.

Thanks for the heads up on Grim Dawn, I loved playing Titans Quest (and expansion) and enjoyed it a bit more than Diablo 2. They are pretty equal in gameplay but TQ has better gfx. I am excited about SWTOR but need to see more on PVP gameplay. Looks like BioWare going to make a great story in this game and just don’t want to pay per month for a glorified SP game with MMO properties.

I have heard a lot of complaints about STO and its a shame because this IP could be relevant for a long time if done right. But I give STO a few more months before it is F2P with store. Only bad thing is that Cryptic looks like they are getting the nod to do Neverwinter Nights 3…

Star Ruler I will probably pickup after a few more patches, it looks like the devs and the community are pulling together to give this game the respect it needs, support them indie devs.

And of course GW2 is going to rock and I will be buying that definitely and even better that there is no monthly subscription.

Like Braindead, I also got Minecraft following a recommendation from Madtoaster. Totally crazy little game, I keep exploring caves then get lost and have to dig myself out! 😆 Looks a lot like a first person Darwinia, here is a link http://www.minecraft.net/

Some of the things people have created with it are amazing. A group even created the planet Earth, here have a look, . Slartibartfast or what? 😆

Ironhound mentioned Rome Total War, I always preferred the first Medieval game to the second one. The second one was good too, but the first one just had a certain something 🙂 I just wish I could get it to run properly on this crappy modern PeeCee I have 🙁

Lemmings for the pc, it easy to forget how old this games is as when I opened the box, along with the 3.5 disk there was also three 5 ¼ disks. 😯 😆

aye there is a 3rd JA, don’t remember the name though, but it is not nearly as good as JA2. (read: it sucked monkey balls)

JA2 is considered by many to be the best in turn based tactical games. There’s been allot of games that have tried to emulate it, but sadly they are all full of fail. If you want a good turn based tactical experience I suggest you play JA2, if you don’t mind the slightly outdated graphics.

TBH, JA2 is the only good turn based tactical game I’ve ever played 😕 which is a shame because the genre is really good.

Come to think of it, I do know of a turn based game but it’s more in the RPG genre, namely Knights of the Chalice. It’s an indie that uses 3rd edition D&D rules, and the AI is really smart, and I do mean really smart. As in web –> fireball combo’s, charming your tanks, focus firing your cleric, and silencing your wizards. No cheap AI tricks like the AI having better hit chances or better damage, just AI that plays like you would, ie play the most effective way…

You can read up about it here:

      http://www.rpgcodex.net/newsarchive.php?words=chalice

BE AWARE: the guys on that site are a bit, how shall I put it, a-holes? Yeah that’s about right.

EDIT: I forgot to mention they are RPG snobs as well 😮

I too got the superbox, but will likely have to wait until next week to receive it from Amazon. You have Evil Genius Pinback? I loved that game! The traps you could create could cause some hilarious results! Although the game was obviously inspired by Dungeon Keeper, I always thought there was a little of No One Lives Forever in there too 😉

You bought the “superbore” box, lol? 🙂 Are you a collector, Pinback, driven to have things for completeness’ sake? I thought you’d be the last person to pick this up. I bought Terran Conflict that way but there’s no way I’m buying every game again in a massive collection! C’mon, Egosoft – what are you going to do next??

This weekend I bought Aquanox 1 & 2 from GOG.I’d played Archimedean Dynasty on Dosbox and had always heard how good these games were supposed to look, even if the gameplay wasn’t as good. and I want to support GOG a little more as there’s no other service like it and it would be a crime if it disappeared. Disappeared properly, I mean – dumb publicity stunts notwithstanding. 😀

Play the Evil Genius demo when it first came out and thought Iam going to have to get a copy of that, then totally forgot about it.

Evil genius is great, I have a copy of that collecting dust somewhere.

Its far too short though I think theres only 2 or 3 levels IIRC.

The game I’ve been playing quite a lot this year is Dwarf Fortress, a free game.

It has many similarities to Evil Genius and Dungeon Keeper, more to Dungeon keeper.

Its a very impressive game, although it sounds pretty dorky 😉

Almost every aspect of the game is procedural, which means no two games are ever the same.

Before you play the game will generate from scratch an entire land-mass, as well as generate civilizations and populations and track every person created. This all gets added to the world history, which is also procedurally generated.

The world is created very realistically, with erosion, rainfall, wind and weather ect.

      An example of the realism:

I remember reading that someone had keyed in the height map for Western-Europe, The game then filled in forests lakes and rivers in almost the same places as real life, all based on its procedural settings.. Even some cities were in the same place, such as paris, although it had some rediculous name 🙂

I’m sorry if this has turned into an advertisement for Dwarf Fortress, but it really is a good game.. IF you can get over the learning curve, which is pretty immense.

      The game itself:

Comprised of 3 parts, Dwarf/Fortress mode, Adventure mode and Legends/Historical mode.

In Dwarf mode, you set out with 7 dwarves to make your mark on the world you just created. You have to mine the Earth for your materials, and build build build 🙂

But it has a lot of depth, the materials you mine are real, with real properties.

The dwarves all have their own histories and likes/dislikes as well as personality.

Here is a pic of the description of my Mayor. just so you can see the insane depth this game goes into:

      Dwarf%20Fortress%202010-10-10%2018-41-22-37.jpg

Here is the main view you will see in the game:

The Red 7s either side of the bridge are magma, as this fort it built inside a volcano.

It has elaborate ways of releasing the magma onto unsuspecting tree-hugging elves and would-be invader Goblins. 😉

The red smears on the bridges are Elf blood.

You can also see some Polar bears, I bought those from the elves and bred about 50 of them into war animals, which help to defend the fort with my military dwarves 🙂

      Dwarf%20Fortress%202010-10-10%2018-42-32-45.jpg

And heres an overview of my fort in a visualiser app, that you can run alongside the game:

What your looking at is a giant Clear Glass pyramid which is situated directly over the caldera of a volcano. The volcano has been demolished and the glass pyramid build in its place. Eventually the lava will flow/erupt out of the top of the pyramid, but its taking a long time.

      knifesea%20overview.jpg

In advernture mode, you take control of one guy, and travel the world visiint your old forts and villages doing ‘adventures’. Its ok but Dwarf mode is better.

In Legends mode, you can inspect every detail of the world. Population, history ect ect.

Bought an xbox an original one still in its box , look like it never been used.

I guess I should have looked at the back of box a bit closer although the Chinese letters should have been a bit of a give away as it turns out to be a region 3 one. 🙄

Then again it was only 7.99. 😀

Yesterday I finally succumbed and bought AI War from Arcen games. I wish I could recommend it but in all honesty I don’t [yet] know what all the fuss is about with this one. – I bought it purely to support the developers, who seem to churn out new content on a frighteningly quick basis, not to mention recently porting the entire game into a brand new engine. I also bought it to support their efforts to raise money for a sick children’s charity. Finally, the entire internet seems to love the game giving me the sneaking suspicion I’m missing out on something… 😉

You could use an emulator if your not adversed to that sort of thing, its legal providing you use your own games and have an xbox which you do 🙂

I just remembered this old Gem: KeeperFX, which is a dungeon keeper fan expansion made to work on modern computers 🙂

I’ve got no problem with using emulator, use them all the time for 8/16 bit computer and consoles. Just didn’t know there was a working one for the Xbox ,but you can pick up a real Xbox for about 10-20 quid.

Ah looks like your right, there aren’t many choices for an emulator. I did find this one though which is new and still being worked on: http://sourceforge.net/projects/dxbx/files/

Its not really a remake. I would think of KeeperFX as the JJFFE (John Jordan’s Frontier First Encounters) of dungeon keeper 🙂

So that would include bug-fixes a few extra features and compatability with modern systems, as well as higher resolutions. It allows you to play fan-made campaigns too, but I have yet to try any of them as the vanilla campaign is plenty fun enough for me.

Anyway to the original question of the thread:

I have just got my hands on Fallout:New Vegas. Tbh I have not made up my mind yet, having only played for about 30 minutes. My first impressions were not good though… surprise.

I suppose I dont much like it because it is just fallout3 on Jet 😉 And I have played that game far more than it deserved. But Im always willing to give it a chance…

30 games Pinback! 😯 The only problem with the 360 is so many of the games are shooters. The platform needs more variety, even the old X Box had lots of different game genres. Most of the games I have on the 360 are X Box 1 games. Did pick up a game of the year edition of Fallout 3 from Flea Bay though for only a tenner though 😉

I would guess that the game would have to support a keyboard and mouse inless there’s some sort of hack for using them with console games.

Got the Keyboard/Mouse adapter for the original X Box. Works like a dream! 😀 If only I go go online with the old X Box! I could have taken on PC players and had a fighting chance 🙄 Stupid Micro$oft! 👿

Battle Engine Aquila and Mech Assault – 2 Lone Wolf also just arrived (forgot about that one). Will test these on the 360 later.

Edit: tried out the games. Mech Assault 2 is a nice solid shooter with the ability to jet pack over buildings. 🙂

Battle Engine Aquila, is an odd thing indeed. You still control a mech, but this thing has four legs and scuttles along the ground, but it can also it fly too. Yes I like! 😎

Nether of these work on the 360 though 🙁

Mass Effect and ME2 for XBox 360 and PC. For some reason, I LOVE this series. There is something about it that is very enjoyable. ME3 is not due out until December. I also got into Red Faction: Guerilla. It is extremely satisfying to take a sledge hammer to a building. 😈 Have no clue why.

Had a quick look at Star Trek seem to be set in the mirror universe didn’t get far as I got killed almost as soon as the game started. 🙄

Might get one of these adapter 😎

An XBOX Game I would recommend getting is Crimson Skies its an arcade flight sim set in a 1930s alternate universe bit like the film Sky Captains of Tomorrow. 😎

Never played Mass Effects, have the first one on PC but never played it due to the DRM.

Never bothered with the second one, If I ever get a 360 I will probably pick them up for that.

Pick up a few PC games over the last couple of weeks.

Sniper Elite played the demo when it first came out and wasn’t too impressed by it.

Robin Hood to replace my cough couch copy.

Commandos 2 for the third time, but it’s a great game and I like these type of games.

Project Freedom bit of a space shmup.

      And MDK for the PS1.

That seems a bit pricey, I bought one of these for the original X Box http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-Xbox-Keyboard … 483ebdf28e

And one of these for the 360, still waiting for delivery. I will report on how well it works when it arrives. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Xbox-360-Xfrag-36 … 35ae4a0daa

EDIT: Received the XFrag 360 keyboard/mouse adaptor. It can be a bit temperamental to get it to work and a wired 360 controller needs to be plugged into it for the 360 to recognise it. But yes, it does work but results vary from game to game. Halo 3 was fine, Fallout 3 less so but still better than using the standard controller. Might improve performance by playing around with the settings and it has a full range of turbo buttons. Finally it also has a port for a PS 2 controller, so it would be possible to use one of those with the 360 too.

My original Xbox game rampage continues with

Splinter cell double agent bought the PC one when it first came out and never got past the prison level, found that the Xbox game is completely different game.

Indiana Jones Emperors tomb played, this on the PS2 Didn’t like it but couldn’t remember why, now I remember bad controls.

Fable the lost chapters another one I had on the PC but never finished it, thought I give it another go.

Lego Starwar 2 the original trilogy never played any of these lego games before and its an absolutely brilliantly funny game.

I try not to buy an excessive amount of games these days since I have a big physical backlog which becomes even bigger if I include Steam titles, but my most recent purchase was Demon’s Souls earlier today for the PS3.

One of the best titles available for the PS3 and seeing how little love my PS3 has been getting compared to my 360 and PC I felt it was time I got some new games for it, about a week prior to today I also bought Yakuza 3 and 4 for it.

Rogue Trooper been looking for this for ages, played it on the PC

Call of duty 3 surprisingly pretty good.

      Far cry instincts.

Destroy all humans this is great love the idea of playing a little alien running around blowing the crap out of everything in a 1950 earth setting 😎 and getting to use the probe. 😆 😆

I am really behind the times 🙄 Which Fallout game are you talking about Pinback? Was there a version of Fallout especially made for the old XBox or are you taking about a port of one of the PC games? I know there was Brotherhood Of Steel on the Xbox. If it is a “new” game I must keep an eye out for it too. 🙂

Im guessing he was talking about Brotherhood of Steel, since both games have a similair tone and engine iirc.

Aha! Thought so! Yes The Brotherhood of Steel is a streamlined version of BOS Tactics on the PC, got that already. Still worth buying though! 🙂 I had a blast with Dark Alliance on the old Xbox. The second one is even better. It does show that if a developer actually thinks about how to implement a game properly, that old console can still give you a heck of a lot of fun. Before I got mine, I thought all the games for it were as deep as a puddle, some of them are, but if your willing to do a bit of digging, you can turn up some gaming gems for that platform, some of them even out do similar things on the 360.

Found a new shop selling games, dvd and music CD for 1.99 or 3 for a fiver, so I have ended up with 6 more Xbox games. 😆

Deus ex 2 never got into this on the PC.

Golden eye rogue agent cant remember if this is good bond game or the bad one.

Medal of honor european assault not see this one before

      The Thing never played it.

Ninja Gaiden allegedly the hardest game on the Xbox.

Burn cycle for the CDI who remembers that system, bought it by mistake as I thought it was the PC version. 🙄

      Recent buys

      Darkstar one on the 360

I also have a copy for the Xbox 1. The main differences is you can run the game at a much higher res and the PC version just looks a lots better. Speedwise it’s better too, but that is down to using newer hardware. Also using a mouse means you can really lay it on to enemies 😈

On the 360 vs the Xbox 1, it is also a bit faster. One thing about the XP patch though, there is a bug when you reach the Gravemind chapter, but a fix is included with the patch. It uses Procmon. If you want to try it out, let me know I and stick it in the SSC download area. 😉

Oh, and Messiah was an excellent game, I snagged a copy off GOG 😉

One last thing re: Halo 2 on XP. Make sure you update the game to the latest patch 1.04 because if you dont Windows Live may cause it to crash when it auto updates

Wing Commander Prophecy never played this so be interesting to see what it’s like.

Two X com games Apocalypse and Interceptor, played the budget re-release version of Apocalypse many years ago but never got into it.

Ghost Master again played the played the budget re-release version a few years ago and got stuck on the headless horseman level, nice to get the full game with a manual this time.

Hired Guns for the Amiga remember reading the reviews for this when it first came out and not being that impressed by it.

      No One Lives Forever 2

Merchant of Venus for the ZX81, one of the early space trading game from 1982

      And 3 XBox games

      Grabbed by the Ghoulies

      Metal Arms

And Destroy of all Humans 2 probing in the 1960 now. 😆

      “Probing”? 😕 😆

Anyways, yes No One Lives Forever 2 is not bad, but the first game is the one to go for as it has a lot more variety in the levels and is longer too. The GOTY version even had more multiplayer levels too. The Merchant Of Venus? I think I had that game on my Speccy? Been eons since I played it though. Oh, and the Halo2 hack is in the download section 😉

EDIT: Um, the Halo 2 XP hack seems to have disappered 😕 Oh, and you were correct Pinback, the Merchant Of Venus was never out on the speccy. Perhaps I was thinking of the board game instead, it was a long time ago 😳

      Starwars jedi starfighter

Fahrenheit apparently a bit of a cult game.

Metal arms another cult game although I played through he first level and didn’t think it was that good.

      GTA Collection

Descent 2 on PS1 for 50p never played any of the descent games and given that the Playstation ports of PC game are generally rubbish this probably not the version to play.

Gravity on the Amiga and it has freaking huge manual for it.

Wing commander 4 big box PC version, hope it better than the playstation version.

I recently purchased the X3 series of 4X space/sim games, but problems with printing out a readable manual have slowed my learning curve to crawl with this game. I also purchased Evochron Mercenary, which has much better docs. The game seems immersive, but the first part (consisting of mining, cleaning solar arrays, delivering packages, etc.) seems very boring. I would like to shot at something. I am still waiting to hear better news about Sword of Stars 2 before I buy it.

Unfortunately I have found nothing that compares to Freelancer or even Darkstar One in the space sim/combat arena. And nothing that compares to Galatic Civilizations II for a good 4X game. I could never get use to the pace of Sins of Solar empire although I thought it was a good game. Any recommendations out there?

Bit of an odd one. “Braid” on Xbox live arcade. Mind bendingly tricky time control platformer with a story surprisingly deep and metaphorical. So much that forums everywhere are discussing it like the meaning of life or something! Dont research it too much if you want to try it, better just to play and see what you make of it. I even have the soundtrack off itunes!

Never played it myself although I read that it one of the favorites on PS2.

Only bought the PS2 myself to play the odd game I can’t get on the XBox.

      Picked up a few games

Body Blows for the Amiga, had a quick play of it last night, not bad although Iam not much into this type of game.

      Judge Dredd for the XBox.

Day of the Tentacle 3″ disk version have to see if I can get it up and running.

And Fallout 3 GOTY edition which won’t work 😡 😡

It seems to a common problem with Windows 7 64bit and 4 core processors, some people seem to have got the game working and other have had no success.

What’s most annoying is that Bethesda are aware of the problem but seem to have no interest in fixing it.

Some games will struggle with that setup. I myself hit problems with my AMD “Bulldozer” based heap of crap with Mass Effect 1 in that the characters turn into black blobs at certain parts of the game. My advice is to always check first before buying a game to see if there are any issues. With Fallout 3 though, don’t give up hope. A massive community has built up around it and I am sure there will be a community based fix sooner or later 😉

Also keep an eye out for bios updates, that has fixed a lot of issues for me in the past.

Hostile Waters was a very fine unappreciated games (with the voice of Blake’s 7’s Avon). Although I had to cheat my way through the last mission. 😀 And I recently re-played (and finally won 🙂 ) the Dos version of CC (I wrote a retro – review for a greek retro gaming fanzine). I preordered and downloaded a beta version that contains about ten islands.

You really need to check the new Carrier Command. 😀 Trust me on that 🙂 🙂 🙂 .

There are differences between the Amiga version, and the Dos one. In the dos version Manta’s A.I is way more aggressive. (But they ignore Walruses 😮 ).

    • #70994

Mmmm they seemed aggressive enough. I will need to track down the DOS version and compare them. I also think the DOS version has a sort of “stardreamer” to speed up time. The Miggy version I think, lacks this but again I need to check 😳

Yes. There is a warp function. From a recent Retro Gamer feature on Firebird, the Dos version was more refined than the ST/Amiga version. (And after the Dos version, the code was backported to 68000, for the mac version).

I got one of the older fat PS2 which has no problems playing PS1 games not sure about the slim ones.

Don't think that there are many space/flight sim on it and as you already have an XBox you probably will have them, I know there is a startrek game which come out on the PS2, which did not appear on the original XBox.

As for RPG/adventures there's plenty of JRPG on it,if you like them, Escape from monkey island come out on it along with a couple of other point&click adventures.

I try to keep any eye out for PS2 exclusives or ones which were not released on the XBox or I have not played.

Picked up a copy of Bully or Canis Canemedit as it says on the box, it a bit of a remake of the 8bit classic school daze by Rockstar.

The game crashes on the 2nd missions IIRC there was some problem with this, I tried the German patch on it but all it did was install starforce on the computer, then it would not run the game.

      My latest games:

Torchlight 2: Digital & Boxed Copy

Galaxy on Fire 2: Digital & Boxed Copy

      XCOM: Enemy Unknown (Special Edition)

Path of Exile (Silver Support packgage)

Legends of Pegasus (what a waste)

I will only play 2 out of these 5 games in the near future. XCOM & POE (as soon as it hits open beta). The others are good to have for the case I win the lottery or get unemployed. <img src='http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_razz.gif’ class=’bbc_emoticon’ alt=’:P’ />

Syphonfilter the Omega Strain bough all the Syphonfilter games on the PS1 but this ps2 sequel is a bit of an disappointment as it suffers from bad control layout.

Baldur gate 2 for the ps2 not look at it yet.

Star topia agan not look at it so far

Mont and blade collection so far duke Pinback has been wandering around looking for something to do.

I should have said it's "Dark Alliance 2" Geraldine not "Baldur's gate 2" speaking of which I have seen they are doing a remake or Enhanced Edition of both the PC games.

Ah, I already have Dark Alliance 1&2 for the XBox 1, good games though. As for the BG re-makes, you might be as well off sticking with the original games and install the wide screen and restoration mods that put back in all the content that was cut from the original releases. Still, if Bioware were to use the Dragon Age engine for a BG game re-make, I might be interested. Oh, and Planescape also has a ton of restoration mods available too!

I got Borderlands 2… I kinda regret it, it's a bit soulless, shootnloot is fun in a party but other than that, a little meh.

I also got Minecraft on the 360… don't, just don't.

It's a Minecraft demo at best with skins you have to pay for?! lolwut?

So my console gaming is pretty lacking atm.

On PC I'm playing Oolite of course and am sort of humming and hawing about buying Evochron.

Next purchase is the new Hitman, I've finished every Hitman game, it's hands down my fave franchise of all time and this one will be the best yet… I hope.

Enjoyed Sniper Ghost Warrior although I didn’t get to the end of it as I got stuck on the machine gun level.

Could have done with a lean key IIRC and it switches between the sniper and COD style gameplay at some points which I found a bit annoying.

I finished FC2 on 360 a few times and never had a problem. I actually preferred it to FC3. Probably cos it doesn’t hold your hand as much and you can’t fast travel so easily. Many people criticised the game for the exact reasons I liked it. FC3 was too “gamey”, should have been more hardcore.

      Fallout 3 GOTY edition

      Dead Space 1 and 2

It has some thing to do with the save games corrupting, their is a patch for it but I am not sure if i can download 360 patch on the PC and transfer it to the 360 on a USB stick.

Also got the PC collector edition of Oblivion for a couple quid.

Now you mention it, I do remember that happening. I started double saving every 10 saves or so after it happened a couple of times. Not sure if that helped or not to be honest.

Bought the Bureau on PC as I have being enjoying playing X Com, so I thought I would have a look at the other X Com game and it was very, very, very cheap but so far all it’s done is CTD on me when I start it.

I’ve been playing Diablo III on my 360 recently – I never played either of the previous ones, but it’s a lot of fun! You can have big long sessions or just jump into it for 30 minutes, so a good casual gaming option. Demon Hunter and Witch Doctor are my favourite classes so far. Don’t mess with the voodoo! 🙂

After watching a bunch of TV documentaries on knights and castles over Christmas, I picked up Medieval 2: Total War cheap, and have been playing it obsessively for the last few days. It’s great fun but, being rubbish at strategy games, I find it quite difficult even on the “easy” level!

      Hi auryx

Ah,.. the Total War series. :girlcrazy:

I played the first Medieval game quite a bit and the second one too. So here is some quick tips:

Use the landscape. Stick your archers on hills with heavy infantry in front to protect them. Even if your the attacking side try to goad the enemy into attacking you and, in so doing, draw them into a trap. Use the speed of your cavalry (hiding them out of sight while the enemy advances is good and hold them off until the time is right) to close the trap and hit em (wedge formation is good) in the back ranks with your heavy infantry chewing them up in a frontal attack and your archers maintaining a constant rate of fire, supply wagons help. I’ve beaten much larger and superior armies using this method.

If your conducting a siege, make lots of holes in the defences with your Trebuchets so that your army avoids choke points. Hitting a stronghold from different directions is good for causing your enemy to rout but keep your assault force spread out to minimise the casualties from incoming fire. Only close ranks and increase the speed of your advance when near the breaches in the defences. Again, use you cavalry to draw off defenders while moving in your slower heavier units to do the real damage. The AI can be quite aggressive so use that against them.

      Hope that helps! :queen:

Hey Geraldine, thanks! That’s great! Such invaluable info 🙂

I struggle with sieges, but that’s probably because I’ve not bothered investing in catapult-making workshops yet, I clearly need to get some. Have also been ignoring heavy infantry units and spearmen – I should bulk out my armies with them a bit more!

Now if only I could stop the French from declaring war on me…..bah 😀

Admirable tactical stuff, Geraldine – in essence, applicable to many types of warfare too!

In difficult terrain – press on!

In encircled terrain – devise stratagems!

      In fatal terrain – fight!

On the grand strategy level expand as fast as possible early on. Get a few cities and from there you will find it easier than if you didnt sieze anything early on.

As an example England should be hitting the scotts pretty hard by turn ten.

If you are looking for another medieval strategy series both Stronghold HD and Stronghold Crusader HD are par excellence if you want to build your own castles.

Check out “Mainland” on Steam, it’s a NEW *gasp* text adventure, and pretty good. The one gripe I have is that as you start to type, it automatically gives you word suggestions, and sort gives you clues because you know you’ll need that word at some point.

I recently got Space Beast Terror Fright. Yes it’s really called that. And it’s totally addictive. A claustrophobic corridor first person shooter with rogue-like elements which is a cross between Space Hulk and Aliens. Do not play if flashing lights give you seizures.

Far too many, over the past 2 years I’ve been a bit of sucker for the continuous offers on GOG and Steam. Probably works out as 300 titles averaging at a £2.99 each! Most expensive was Elite Dangerous at £26.79 even when on sale (which I’m not going to discuss further!) and the cheapest about £0.19p!

I’ve worked out I probably only have around 10 days of remaing life time left in which to play each one! How some peeps I’ve seen with 1500+ games in their Steam libraries cope is beyond me!

Most recent was “Predestination” yesterday from Steam – it’s an early access space 4x game, and I’ve been burned by these before (haven’t I E:D?), but the developer is always very active and attentive on the forum, friendly, open to praise/suggestions/critique and overall seems trustworthy and “Presdestination” is hopefully gonna be a cracker! Yikes, I sound like I’m making an advert for the game here….. I’ve not actually tried it yet – dont go rushing to buy just on my current “good feeling” bout it! :prankster:

I have yet to get this one yet Pinback, but everyone that I have talked too said its a great game especially when you have all that DLC. I just bought two copies of 7 Days to Die (zombie survival with minecraft type build mechanics) so I can play with my son. He loves minecraft and zombies so why not get a game that does both 🙂 It’s still in alpha but they are actively updating so I felt good about them finishing it and you can host your own server which I like too.
