Palawan D1? Been there, nice place. 🙂 I am sure the SSC will be fine so don’t worry and instead, have fun! 😉
If such a world exists one day Gernot, I’d put my money on you finding that Easter egg! Only the children of the 8 bit era would stand a chance! 😀April 22, 2018 at 3:58 am in reply to: Space Battles and other exotic things from the past #111308
That’s an amazing achievement Gernot! 😮 It just goes to show what the Intellivision could have done had it advanced a bit. This might not be the most stunning looking demo I’ve ever seen, well….actually it still is, but, far more importantly, for the sheer technical prowess of getting it to run at all with so little resources leaves me speechless!April 2, 2018 at 5:51 pm in reply to: Space Battles and other exotic things from the past #111264
For sure Gernot, there was a lot of dodgy dealings going on back then between game devs and publishers. Of course this ended somewhat in the great video game crash of the early 80s in America. Many Atari games for example ended up going to landfill sites.
Of course things were not so bad in Europe, especially in the UK & Germany. It seemed like it was us who kept the video games industry going through this difficult period. I recall well from back then a great many, now vanished, machines in the shops and games to go with them. But then that’s another story. 😉April 1, 2018 at 6:17 pm in reply to: Space Battles and other exotic things from the past #111257
I have to admit Gernot, for it’s time, that’s damned impressive. In fact the only other game I can think of, of that period, to better it was the mighty Dungeon Master and that only ran on 16 bit computers, very expensive back then in comparison to the likes of the Intellivision. That it also had procedural generated dungeons also, perhaps brings it even with Dungeon Master when I think about it! Yes very impressed with that Gernot, a real gem you found there. 🙂April 1, 2018 at 6:10 am in reply to: Space Battles and other exotic things from the past #111248
Still, from a historical point of view, it’s important to see where we were to understand better where we are going. 😉March 31, 2018 at 7:47 pm in reply to: Space Battles and other exotic things from the past #111244
Wow Gernot, this stuff goes way back, to the very beginning no less. It’s interesting to think that many of these games and the systems they ran on are real museum pieces now. The dawn of computer entertainment. I do oftentimes wonder what the creators of those 8 gems like Scramble, Asteroids and, my favorite, Defender think about today’s games. I wonder if any foresaw that one day games would look so life like and have really complex game mechanics? From small 8 bit acorns grow massive AAA games of today. 🙂
Is it just me or is the SSC coming back to life again? In anycase it’s a great thing to see D1 🙂
Well, hello there. 😉
Great to see the progress you are making here Nevil. I am still amazed at the freighter video you did back in 2016! 🙂
We will indeed Nevil 😉 , in fact I had a dodgy moment in the game just there as the servers were going down for an update and I had a snatch job to do on some cargo at a planetary outpost! Damn close, but got what I needed with seconds to spare. I never knew SRVs flew so good! 😮
Anyways, glad to see you made here Nevil…..um…….any updates on XFrontier to share pretty please?
Hey Gernot! 🙂
500 DOS games? That could be pretty cool! Are they German versions though? No matter, still a great pack. As for getting them to run, I’ve always used D-Fend Reloaded. It’s easy to set up and runs just about everything, no matter how old, I’ve thrown at it. Basically it provides a front end GUI for Dosbox. By the looks of things it has been updated too since I last used it. You can find it here.
Have fun! 🙂
Next time Nevil contacts me I will give him the good news, unless of course he has found out himself already. 😉
No worries D1, I know you have been working very hard on the forum recently and I am grateful for that. There is bound to be a few hickups along the road but the main thing is the SSC lives! 🙂
Hi D1 o/
Glad I am finally able to post again 🙂 I was contacted by Nevil Clavain (creator of XFrontier) who was having difficulties in trying to access the forum. Could I ask you you check his account is functioning properly? His profile is here:
Looks good D1. I will keep an eye on it for sure! 🙂
Ahhhhh Farcodev. These updates just keep getting better and better, great work! Yes I am still watching and still amazed at the sheer amount of detail you putting into Far Colony. With every update you do it’s clear that many commercial titles in the 4x genre had better watch out! 😀
I agree D1, it’s well past time. If we are ever to be a space faring race we must, simply must, dump the old way of super powers being the only presence in space with their own narrow agendas. To create stuff out there, you need business, you need industry, you need people, everyday people with hopes and aspirations just like how people migrated to other parts of the globe in years gone by, to make a new life, a new world of their own, free from ties to the old world. A new beginning basically for the human race that will hopefully have learned from the mistakes of the past.
Will it ever happen? Yes, I think it will. Will it happen in our lifetimes? Well, that remains to be seen. 😉
