Sorry SolCommand, old link try this one – http://www.lancersreactor.org/phpBB3/
Been a while since I’ve posted or even read any of the old links I have.
There are similar fears for JGE as Net Devil are working on Lego Universe and there’s a tight schedule for release on that title, while JGE is flexible. How true this speculation is, I’ve no idea but providing Net Devil come up with goods I don’t mind waiting.
Asteriods was a class arcade machine.
I used to go by the tag ‘Slim’ back in my misspent youth and I usually held a space in the high score list on the asteroid machines near where I lived. Lots of good memories of spending hours stood at the machine with a Coke resting on the screen and me bashing away at buttons . . . where did my life go 🙂
Not that you’re one to waste time on things that aren’t important Grim.
Terminus is one I’ve heard of but like Grim, never played. The only site/community I’ve got involved with dealing with stuff like this is the Freespace 2 project, a site I haven’t visited for a long time. While I’m all for people making MODS and tinkering with source code, it’s not really my bag and the thought of looking at millions of lines of code doesn’t excite me at all. I’m a firm believer in ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’, a line that I agree doesn’t apply to most abandoned space games but as the guys at X Wing Alliance Upgrade project proved, you can only make it look as pretty as the game engine will allow you to and for most Space games that’s not terribly pretty as there have been so few over the last 5 years or so.
(Sorry, I really do sound like a broken record on this subject, I apologise)
I’m more of a ‘Lets use what we know to improve what’s coming rather than trying to make what’s gone look and work better’, kind of guy.
Agree with you 100% Darkone, JGE needs to stand out from the crowd and warrant it’s monthly sub.
I must admit to being happy that BP is first out of the blocks but for all the wrong reasons. I’m hoping that all the Blizzard fan boys and the general ‘Hangers on’ will all troop over to BP and either get hooked or give up on Space games all together, leaving JGE for those that want to re-live the thrill that JGC still gives but in a much prettier way.
For me JGC is massivly under subscribed and underrated, it is for me the best Mulitplayer Space Combat Sim that’s available on the net, even though subscriber numbers and interest are low. You tell me where else you can flip 180 degrees to the direction you’re traveling in and shoot whatever’s behind you ? When all is said and done, I’ve waited two years for JGE so another 6-12 months isn’t going to kill me, I just need something from Net Devil/CodeMasters to show my faith will be rewarded.
Thanks for re-setting the vote Darkone.
While I have to stand by JGE, I can totally see the appeal of X:Online, Elite 4 even Infinity. BP I’m still dubious about but I hope to have my mind changed in the coming months.
The last real effort anyone made at massive Space Combat was Lucasarts/Sony with their expansion to SW:Galaxies – Jump to lightspeed and I’ll be honest, it failed to impress me in any way, shape or form. The models and flight system seemed half finished and as for the missions, they were just aweful. As Grim has pointed out in one of his threads, we went back to Freelancer for a short while, just after the global server was taken down, we didn’t venture too far into MODS or add-ons and stuck to a vanilla server, it was good for a while but it soon wore thin as there were so few other pilots around. We then went further back into my gaming past and we picked up Jumpgate Classic, I BETA tested classic for Net Devil back in the 90’s but was soon swept away by various Star Wars titles. I have to be honest and say that I should have stuck with JGC instead of going for the ‘Big Brand’ of Star Wars.
What I’d really like to see is game developers involving communities, like this one in the development of their games. While I understand you can’t please all the people all the time but I find myself getting annoyed by the Blizzard fan boys that have picked up JGE because it’s an MMO and they believe they know what makes a good game, perhaps from their perspective having dice rolls and weapon stats makes for a more interesting game but for me it’s simply a test of piloting skill and nerve that gets the juices pumping.
I’m sorry this is another ‘Wall of Text’ moaning about how badly we’ve been treated . . . It’s a subject I could have ranted on about for years.
Lots of ‘Old School’ spacers have voted on this poll.
While Infinity and Elite 4 both appeal my head and heart say JGE, if it ever comes out, it will be the game to play. I love the X Universe but there’s been talk of X-Online for many years now and it’s still nowhere to be seen. Having said that the problems Reakktor had until recently and the delays in JGE point towards a lack of urgency when it comes to developing and publishing these types of games.
I won’t bang on AGAIN but I still feel like ‘Space Gamers’ have been shafted for so long now we’re looked on as a minority and are ignored simply because we don’t have anything new to play with, so we go and play something else while wishing we had some new space toys to play with.March 5, 2010 at 3:44 pm in reply to: What part of the world or universe to you hail from? #62862
Walsall, West Midlands, England, UK . Just north of Birmingham, I would post a veiw from my window but it looks like any other street in the UK.
My location is pretty stable, not too far away from my PC 😀
Like GUNSMIF it’s all about the right tools for the job.
Freelancer was a great game and I can’t knock the use of mouse control for that game, it was designed to be mouse only and it worked. Other titles however, would have been terrible with mouse only controls, X Wing Alliance for example was all about the turning circle and balancing the power to get the best results against your opponent, that would have been a nightmare with mouse and keyboard. Freespace series is another example of a great Joystick game, there was just too much going on for you to glance down and make sure you’re pressing the specific target key and not the friendly target key.
I look at it this way –
First/Third person shooter – First/Third person MMO – Mouse/keyboard
Flight Sim/Space Combat Sim – Joystick (Games like the Battlefield series where you get to fly also require a stick in my opinion).
Driving/Platform games – Game pad
It’s all about what you want to get out of the game, if you want to be involved in flying then what else would you have other than a stick in front of you.
Well for me it was Scramble, the late 70’s arcade machine game but not being a rich kid I couldn’t have one of those at home but my luck changed when the BBC Micro became available in the UK and with it came Elite. . . .
Through many different home computers from the Sinclair ZX80, through the Sinclair Spectrum, the Dragon 32, the Commodore 64, the Atari ST and my first 386, space games have always been top of my list, the most lasting memory of space games was buying the original version of X Wing, it was on 8 floppy disks and required a boot disk to make sure nothing else was running.
Oh the good old days of DOS and floppy disks.
Best Multi Player experience for me was Starlancer, I was an admin for a UK based GSP at the time and having dozens of players all waiting to get on and blast eachother to pieces was great .
So my answer to the question posed – Elite.
I’m sorry to hear you’re a ‘Spreadsheets in Space’ player but if it floats your boat, then enjoy it. The planet would be a sad place if we all had the same tastes anyway.
I have to agree with you about this site, I’ve spent years looking for somewhere like this that covers the whole ‘Space’ thing and is full of like minded folks.
Despite my ‘Negative’ post I’m still eagerly awaiting JGE.
I’ve seen this type of thing time and again, even the best (Valve) get it wrong sometimes and potential players end up waiting another 12/18 months for the product. I have faith that Net Devil will deliver, I’m still not convinced that they won’t deliver ‘World of Spaccraft’ but only time will tell.
NB: Fallen Wild have a zero tolerance policy on the following names and games –
The words ‘World of Warcraft’ in that order are banned on the forums, we use the phrase ‘That Blizzard Game’. Eve is referred to as ‘Spreadsheets in Space’ and Star Trek:Online is not mentioned . . .
Yes . . . he waffles on a bit.
