To all SSC Station occupants
Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.
Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

Hello all,
Recently I've been trying to find the name of a space combat sim I remember playing back when I was in junior high, in the mid 90s. This would have likely been a DOS/Win 3.1 game. It took place on a grid, and I seem to remember the background being red. You controlled a spaceship, and fought other spaceships on the grid. I seem to remember you set your velocity and angle and that's how you moved, but I could be wrong in this. And it was a combat game, you fought other spaceships that were on the grid, I believe by shooting lasers and maybe photons? I've had little luck googling the games components that I remember, so I thought I'd try you guys.
Thanks for all the help!

No idea what it could be but it sounds like some sort of Star Control clone if it was 2D.
nah not a clone back then there were quit a few of this type of space combat games (usually turn based) - i think one was almost star trek themed - and another one also let you design ship spec for usage... but i cant remember those names too...
edit:
maybe this one :

but my ol' favorite tactical space combat was on amiga:
Renegade: Legion Interceptor
Thanks for the website, I'm going to amuse myself be looking through all those games...trying to go by year now...just know that it's 96 or earlier.
It looked kinda like Space Conquest...but I'm sure everything was red.
I'm almost certain the game you're talking about is WinTrek, a game I played and enjoyed quite a lot when I was a kid.

It is now freeware and can be downloaded (along with an enhanced version for newer systems) directly from the dev's website here:

fadrad! O. M. Effin'. G. That's it! I can't wait to try this out tomorrow!
Glad you found what your looking for boice818 and well done fadrad for tracking it down. I wonder if the dev would mind if it was added to the SSC archive? Also, perhaps you might like to do a review of the game boice818? Show us all what it is about?
YES it was exactly that WINTREK game !
thanks for the link unfortunately that Wintrek doesnt run on win7 x64 and those Wintrek enhanced downloadmirrors on sourceforge are not working - if anyone got them could you please post a working link here ?
I had a look at the enhanced version. That seems to work fine on my Win 7 PC. Got it from here.
