Yay - you don't know how long I've been waiting for this new version so thanks for finally getting it out there.
Bad News is I've already uncovered a few bugs .. boooo.
Submitted them over on the bug tracker for you to follow through on, couple of minor things and one major crash that's got my game stuck on the Loading screen - happy to send over the db file if it'll help ?
Did get some use of the new construction menu but still doesn't feel quite right, will try and explain what I mean when I've had a little more time to experiment but I think it has to do with the early game.
Coming to it fresh after not playing for a while it's very unforgiving, building placement should be guided by the UI in the early stages by limiting the selection or hinting - I think the lack of direction will turn some beta testers off before the meat of the game really appears.
Overall I think you've had more stable releases and certainly I had more fun in the earlier alpha releases when the resources were perhaps a little more generous to ease you in 🙂
Hmm, interesting view, yeh I think I have found the major problems its all to do with the new menu and the way the buildings are loaded up, worked fine for the most part whilst testing it in the un-built version - there shouldn't be any difference but there is and will be putting out a new patch soon.
The new UI has still a few thing I have planed to add/improve on such as the locked and a full icon for each building at the bottom.
the other new feature that has been added, the trading system is unlocked a little into the game so if you can, continue playing and i'm sure you will start to like this version a little more, as with resources it shouldn't be much different, the only new resource change has been the fuel, which is mostly needed at this point for trading (fuel your trade ships will soon be implemented into the repair ships amongst other things)
I am keen to get your feedback on the new build UI and what you think would be good to improve it, its now much faster to navigate and easy to see all the information, the resource bars are based upon your current storage so it shows how much of an effect that building would have in the current state of the game.
And yeh the bug report, whilst i'm also getting used to this still, its becoming very handy!
Cheers for the bug update. I must confess the new construction UI is growing on me.
I have drafted an idea on paper, need to transfer it to a graphic. In essence the left menu that scrolls up and down transfers to a tabbed area above the building selection permitting a user to jump between building types very quickly.
I agree the padlock and colour coding the building availability should improve things for the new player. Adding the building graphic will be a nice touch. Have you thought about shortcut keys for quick building options.
It might not align to your UI design but I'd like a quick build toolbar that I could tuck away up the corner of the screen as a floating panel that permits quick selection of new buildings.
An alternative would be if the building stays on the cursor until cancelled for multi building placement, especially useful for solar panels and storage units etc.
I do like the centre highlight of the building, pity it's the green colour in preview. Also nice that you've packed all the building info in a single UI. Would be good to highlight some of the key costs, like finance, resources and/or science points - this was always very clear from the old UI. The resource bars look good as well.
I'll hopefully get the trading building unlocked soon so I can test that new area. Look forward to creating a how to video once you've got some of the early resource bugs resolved.
Keep going with the beta momentum, the gameplay is great once you get the initial base buildings down.
Just out of interest does the sun position now have an impact on solar energy generation ?
the green building colour is temporary, for the fix for most of the problems and the next update it should be back to its proper colour and hopefully rotating too!
one of my views on the entire UI is of the bottom left category menu, it feels too small and not so intuitive to scroll e.g. where is the scroll bounds etc plus the green box that encompases it all is temporary as it looks a little plain.
I would like to add some way to draw attention to specific parts of the UI info to help give a clearer understanding for the point of that building, but I am very limited in this area (for reasons that shall be apparent soon) however I was thinking if the value is anything other than '0' it would turn green (or a different colour etc)
as to the sun position currently it doesn't make any difference, and actually plan to do the reversal, that is that the sun position never changes the power income, at this point I think the game is complicated / hard enough and with night lasting 15 days this could make energy gathering a challenge. Instead I plan to base the energy income on how much light that part of the moon would get, so craters would cast shadows around the rim and also the center if deep enough may get a lot less sunlight. The theory behind this is similar to most current solar energy harvesters (there are many types, e.g. panels, mirrors and a few more that I cant remember their names) and that they store their energy and release it when needed, while is inefficient today due to battery technology this is improving and so stays within the realms of possibility so as not to go too far into fiction.
So build 0.1.8b will be out very soon, it should fix a number of bugs plus make the build menu building the proper colour, as well in the update will have more of the 3 resource bars working, ore, water and sunlight in which you can tab and cycle through the 3 overlays on the map.
further to these the ability to rotate the buildings (finally!) is back!
and a fix for the not enough cash for colonists menu sticking on.
Do you think the game save bug will also be included as a fix in the next version ?
Yep, thats fixed too, or at least it should be, however there may be new issues that arise, but hopefully they won't.
1.8beta is now out!
