To all SSC Station occupants
Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.
Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

Hi,
I'd like to look closer in the 4x genre of space games that generally contain a lot of Strategy elements, but I also want to "Jump in a cockpit and get things done myself". Is there such a game? Thanks to recommend me some titles. Also I don't play online.
I mostly know about 4x games by watching videos. The game that really impressed me is Enldess Space, but I have heard that there is not too much action, that is, you set up a lot of things but afterwards you are just watching the action. I don't want that. I don't mind taking long time to set up a lot of things (Strategy), but then, I want to act myself, at least to a larger extend.
Thanks a lot for feedback,
XenonS
Hard one that one.
Only game that springs to mind is X-Com Interceptor http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/x-com-interceptor not a 4X game but it dose have some strategy elements to it in building your base.
Hi Pinback,
yeah, I realize that the "4X" part in my question is going to limit the responses.
What I have in mind is a game like Salvation Prophecy: There is a global map which represents the action taken by the factions, you have a limited control of what you can strategically upgrade, but then you move in 3rd person from the space station in your cockpit to carry out the battle you saw prior developing on the map.
Once the storyline is finished, there is a Free Roaming where you can try to be dominate over the other factions and conquer the universe.
So, Salvation Prophecy is more an action-based game which I like very much, but I imagine that there are also such kind of games combining the Strategy involved in Endless Space and the action of Salvation Prophecy.
Also, it doesn't need to be a recent title. I will google and read the reviews / descriptions of Master Of Orion II (I own the first game, but I was quickly bored I remember).

Aaah, Microprose, the magic name.
X-COM...I didn't realize they ever made a space sim, I only know about Hyperspeed.
Think I will take a look on Steam for that one.
Thanks,

not the usual 4x moo style but ressource management and space combat in one package
dont expect svga graphics XD - and easy enough to complete in one evening without breaks

Never knew Starlord had that.
Starlord, yes, that's it exactly. Thanks very much for the pointer, DARI 😎
Midwinter was really a runner if I remember well, but why not this one... mystery.

brrr midwinter the granddaddy of all regime-change-games
wonder if it runs better with a souped up amiga-emulator hehe
you may also try distant world - get one of your favorite ships set it to direct manual control and put everything else on auto - then you have almost a top down shooter - (well not really but as far as you can get in a 4xrts - and obviously no cockpit view)
I find it incredible how "naive" the action part is going on in most good 4x strategy games like MOO2 or Endless Space. Ok, in Endless Space at least the grafics for ship combat (no ground combat) are really good and eye-candy. But in other titles, also MOO2, the combat is just like a pacman clone 🙂 But then, there is some humor in it...
Btw, I find Starlord's action part much more entertaining than the pure cutscene in Endless Space.
The strategy games (space related) more remind me of Sid Meier's "Pirates!" , where the 3rd-person combat really fits in the game.
