To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

XCOM 2

Today the reveal trailer for XCOM 2 has come out as well as an IGN interview with one of the project leads. It looks damn exciting! Story wise it looks like when you defeated the etherial patriarch in EU, that you only delayed the inevitable. The aliens have set themselves up to look like the saviors of humanity. Statues are all around symbolizing aliens helping humanity. The society is seems to be a dystopia.

Is it possible these aliens are a different faction or if the "1st wave" was meant to destabilize the planet and have "different looking and acting" aliens of the same faction take over the planet through politics and giving people everything they could dream of (ie the Ashen from SG1) while having ulterior motives.

Instead of sending out recon squads, XCOM is now focused on guerilla warfare. You know where the enemy is. Which means the gameplay is meant to be faster paced. It will obviously open up to strategies. I just hope firaxis makes the game difficult enough.

Snakemen! I've heard they were from the original XCOM. I was never a fan of turn based games as a kid, so I never played them (will get around though).

Mobile base! This seems like a cool way to change things up. Maybe it's possible to build smaller bases on land, while hiding the flying fortress from the main force. This could make gameplay interesting. Perhaps this is how firaxis plans to implement multiple bases.

Mods! In the interview, the PL said that mods were going to be a thing. While mods were possible, there was never enough mod support to make something like a total conversion. Ever since I got into xcom, I knew a Stargate mod would be absolutely perfect! So let's hope that something like this will be possible! An Alien, Terminator and WWIII mod would also be pretty damn cool!

So what did you guys think?

Being a player of  original Xcom since  God  remembers when, I dislike the new Xcom with passion. I dont care what they do in this Xcom2, im not going to like it more.  For players who  liked it I can only presume Xcom2 is going to be awesome since the scenario its showing makes for a lot of tactical fun (guerilla vs stablished power etc.) and I suppose they are going to remedy the main problems with the first game wich can only result in a win-win result. Fireaxis Xcom  fans do have reasons to be excited as I see it.

I like the game, never got the PC version to work and ended up buying it second hand on the 360 but I don't think I will be rushing to buy the sequel when it appears.

I had only played the (true) original very briefly and I didn't find it particularly memorable for whatever reason.  In retrospect, I found XCOM EU more enjoyable than many games with turn-based tactics such as Divinity Original Sin, Wasteland 2, Age of Wonders 3 and more recently Invisible Inc.  In some cases it's hard to pin down exactly why XCOM seemed so much better.  My big problem with XCOM was with what became BETWEEN missions.  It was just terrible.  Granted, it was very fun to get useful upgrades for the tactical battles, but managing that stupid base, rushing to get those stupid satellites up, god it was just awful.  I hope they do much better with that part in the sequel.  I would like it to bear very little resemblance to the base-managing in XCOM:EU.

Think this has been out for a couple of weeks now and it looks like the PC version has the usual problem of just not being finished which seems to be all too common with the triple A nonsense.

Personal I'm not buying the PC version, I will just wait a few years and pick the console version second hand.

Without getting into exactly what Firaxis did wrong here, I don't think buying into Microsoft or Sony's bullshit is ever the solution.

Look at what we are talking about: people are having problems getting 60fps performance with 8x MSAA.  Yes, Firaxis screwed this up, the performance isn't reliable enough even with FXAA on very high end systems.  But the console alternative means you are locked at 30fps, on what essentially boil down to "Medium" graphics settings, with a shitty control surface.  The worst case scenario on PC is far better than this.  From what I've been seeing, I don't think anyone is having trouble maintaining 30fps at all.

Console is never better, we just hold PC games to much higher standards.

Was unaware that this is a PC only game but I would guess a console version will follow and as I was royally burned by the first game I would still not buy the PC version of it.

Just watched this yesterday.... with Angry Joe's high praise of the first one I might have to play that one (only had it in my steam for 2yrs). But this is looking really good and maybe after a few patches it will be a great game. And as always the developers are embracing modders.

My initial impression was that XCOM2 was absolutely CRAZY difficult, beyond any measure of sanity.  A little further in I discover that one of the reasons I formed this perception was that the campaign quickly gets somewhat easier once you develop some very basic gear for your soldiers (2nd teir armor and weapons, the ability to field more units).  I now find it not to be too much more difficult than XCOM1.  While I kind of like the idea of certain abilities feeling so powerful as to actually DECREASE the overall difficulty of a game, I have to ask what the hell they were thinking in making the initial difficulty of the campaign quite so over-the-top.  (I happen to think that the difficulty of XCOM 1 was about right.)  Now that I am over the hill, so-to-speak, I actually find that my skill at the game has measurably decreased (relative to XCOM1) not because of different game mechanics, but because I got so damn acclimated to reloading 30 times a turn, and lost all ability to plan.  Overall, I have found the experience exhausting, and I'm struggling to find motivation to keep playing, even though I now find the game not to be overly difficult (no, I would not still be playing it at all if the difficulty had not let up).

I find the mission timers to be annoying, and I pretty much agree with the popular sentiment that it significantly constrains your strategic options while not adding anything worthwhile.  On the other hand, I've been far less annoyed with the timers than I would have expected, it seems they have done a very good job selecting the timer durations.  Still, I'm not really sure what anybody's getting out of it, or why Firaxis seemed to think that this was such a good idea.

I absolutely abhorred the strategic base-building part of XCOM1.  Without getting into details, the worst parts of that part of XCOM1 (satellites) are largely remedied, but it still feels pretty bland.  It is only there to support the tactical part of the game.

As far as performance goes, Firaxis took a route that involved a bare minimum of resources to develop a AAA game at a AAA price point.  It should have been ported to Unreal Engine 4.  I of course realize that not everything running in UE4 will run beautifully, but UE3 is now quite ancient, and I cannot help but think that many of the performance issues are the result of pushing this venerable but aging engine beyond its limits.  But Firaxis decided not to port it.  Probably because creating a game which is undoubtedly technically VERY VERY similar to XCOM1 took relatively little effort.  Due to the similarity with XCOM1, I would find it pretty hard to believe that the development of this game was anywhere near as labor intensive as most other AAA games.  I am usually very sympathetic toward developers in this regard, because I feel like I can well imagine the enormous amount of work that it takes to make a game.  In this case I am not.  They probably had a huge team, they made a game which has little reason to have huge technical differences with its predecessor, and they charged what is today a staggering amount of money for it.

If I could go back and do it all again, I probably wouldn't have purchased it.

Also, of course slashing someone with a katana does more damage than shooting them in the face with a shotgun because that JUST MAKES SENSE.

I really enjoyed XCom.

Im holding off on part 2 for a little while. Waiting for things to be more fleshed out including all the mods that will make it better.
