VEGA STRIKE

Vega Strike is an open-source space combat flight simulator, combining code from a couple of dinosaur 3D games and adding new code to build an awesome new game.

Features:

>Huge star systems with realistically scaled planets.

>Jump hole navigation for interstellar travel.

>FTL interplanetary travel.

>Amazingly realistic physics. Not only does everything in the ship have mass, that you can feel, the planets, jump holes and large objects all have gravity wells.

>Outstanding customization options; everything from weapons mount upgrades to improved scanners to reactor model and size to capacitor and SPEC capacitor upgrades, the list goes on and on.

>Excellent commodity and trading details, with beleivable cargo values eg. planets produce raw materials and need manufactured goods, war zones pay more for critical items.

>Wide range of mission types: cargo, bounty, patrol, clean sweep (search and destroy), defend, escort and rescue missions where you have to tractor in the escape pod of a downed pilot.

>Interactive factions; everything you do affects how the various races and creeds will react to you. Eg. I took a rescue mission and I didn't think rescuing one pirate pilot would be that big a deal. WRONG! Even though I had killed a couple of pirates before the rescue mission, after saving one of 'em's bacon now the pirates love me and a couple of corporations hate me.

>Input options including mouse flight and joystic.

>Vista Compatible! An amazing feat in itself epecially since the original games they built this on are from the early 90's.

>MMO compatible, although atm they don't have a working server going.

>Open ended universe. There is a storyline but you don't have to follow it at all. You can become a trader, mercenary, pirate or anything you want to be just by doing whatever you want to do.

Warnings:

>This is not a kid's game!!! Not only is it very challenging to fly, what with having to navigate gravity wells and fly down tunnels to dock at some of the bases and chase down moving ships to dock with them, some of the commodities have a mature theme. "Mommy, what's a pleasure borg?"

>Playing Vega Strike may lead to weight loss, chain smoking and sleep deprivation 😆

I have a question on Vega Strike and maybe I was doing something wrong. But I used the SVN and ran the game and the graphics look really dated compared to the screenshots I have seen am I missing something?

Two things come to mind....

One, did you DL the Vega Strike Version 5.0?

Two, did you select the highest graphics option that your computer is compatible with in the config?

From the Digital Brilliance News by Lancer Solurus:

What is Vega Strike?

Vega Strike is an OpenSource 3d Space Simulator. Work is proceeding on both the Vega Strike game engine and a Vega Strike Universe game data set. Both engine and data are in a playable state, but still under development. Each release serves as a beta for both engine and data.

The Vega Strike engine serves as the foundation for the Privateer Gemini Gold, Privateer Remake, Vega Trek, and Pi Armada projects, whose websites can be reached via the sidebar to the right.

The project goal is, at version 1.0, is to be a generic space simulator. Currently developed features include:

Trading

Exploration

Plenty of shoot 'em up action

Preliminary multiplayer Deathmatch (testing server only)

Vega Strike is Free (as in liberated) Software

Vega Strike is an Open Source Software project under the GNU license (with dual-licensed GNU/Creative Commons artwork). We believe that, even in the realm of computer games, it is important that people have access to codebases that will let them imagine, create, and expand on their own terms, not those of some restrictive proprietary license.

For more information about Free Software and the Free Software Foundation, GNU and their licenses, and Open source or free software in general you can visit GNU website

The Game: Vega Strike: Upon the Coldest Sea

As you play, you will see that several species and numerous political entities are present in the game, and they do not all co-exist peacefully. With the invasion of the Union of Dispossessed Colonists,a lesser political entity, the brink of war has been reached between the human dominated Confederation of Inhabited Worlds and the Aeran Ascendancy even as the border between the Rlaan Assembly and the Aera still smolders under a long, tense cease-fire that has failed to become a peace.

The Vega Strike Wiki Database contains many entries on the ships, species, and factions found in the VS universe, and is a good starting point for those interested in exploring backstory. The Wiki Database is, however, still a work in progress. Many entries are minimal or in need of significant editing. However, it's still the best (non-developer/non-spoiler-filled) source of information on the VS universe and entities therein.

Developer Contributions

Would you like to contribute to Vegastrike and become a developer? Great! Just sign up for the developer mailing list (our apologies if it's a bit on the dry side, the deluge of spam really gunked things up for a while and recovery has not been swift, with many developer communications moving to alternate channels) and send us an email about youself, noting your skills (or which ones you'd like to develop by working with us ) and what you would like to do. Or, go to the forums and developer blog and poke around until you find someone working on something that interests you and contact the people working on that aspect of the project directly. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE A CODER! We have a profound need for people to do many other things as well -- documentation, web maintenance, fiction development, artwork etc. Believe us -- we'd kill for people with good cat-herding skills even if their skillset doesn't include anything technical (Scatter-brained academic code-developers attempting to remote manage busy artists, artisans, and even each other doesn't politely lend itself to the smoothest operation one can imagine). If you would like to help, or would like to find out more about the project first, then go to our forum and ask any questions you might have, what you can do, what needs to be done, etc.

Ok,i gave Vega Strike a try, from what it looks its a graphically enhanced version of Privateer.

I hate the cartoony fellows that are in the bar,i liked the graphics,as for the rest nothing i didn't see in other space sims.Sadly.

But hey its just 0.5.0 right? Plenty of versions to bring something original 😀

Vega Strike has a lot of potential since it is open source, you can really put any idea you want in there if you have the time and knowledge to do so. Only thing that stinks is that VS has been on v0.5.0 for over 1.5yrs now and the only way to get the updated version is to compile it yourself. It would be nice if they put out a compiled version every 6mos so people can see the changes. I haven't put it on my machine in quite sometime but the new Privateer Gemini Gold uses the latest build versions in their latest update to the game.

That's the program I usually use, but most people are not that inclined to do that and do miss out on features/fixes that have been added in the almost 2yr period from the latest update. I think the engine would get more recognition if it was just updated more frequently or just post some nice youtube videos on the latest achievements.

Vega Strike has been updated to v0.5.1 (Finally!) after what 3yrs. Would have liked to see one huge change list from .5 to .5.1 but couldn't find one. When I get more time I will build this and see what has improved since the last time I tried this in 2010.

Ivd been playing around with this development seems to have slowed right down. That said there are some bug fixes and balancing changes theres been 6 monthly bulds and weekly more regular cvs updates. It plays ok but i think its become bogged down in bored devs, lack of new talent and anyone new wanting to totally remake it rather than just slotting in and doing what they can

And over two years later, it's STILL on v0.5.1! :O

Think I'll pass. At least Oolite has a ton of new features now that 1.80 is released, and there are already so many awesome new features in development that some people are getting impatient for 1.82 to arrive.

I believe they still churning out svn builds on regular basis, but that's that. No new stuff or whatnots either.

In a surprising turn of events, a new version just came out:

Only for Linux, it seems!!!

Glad to see it moved to GitHub, hope it starts to see more development and they posted a small roadmap.... which the biggie is porting it to python 3. That's when I would expect the Win/Mac ports in v0.8.

@sscadmin After getting a lot of help from, the VegaStrike community, I was able to compile a windows executable, based on the 0.8 codebase!! Not only that, but I was able to also run the latest WCU mod!!

It's extremely rough around the edges,  and there is no easy installation, or guaranteed bug - free game play, but it's a start!!

Thanks for the update on this @CaptainKal, when I get the time I will have to look in compiling this. Hopefully we will see another update this year.

I downloaded the files, and I can launch into the game.... I do get this 'ERROR ... No Rooms Specified' error and the game is unplayable. So I will probably need to go through that vegastrike.config file and look over all the settings and play with it a little.

I did see that on windows we needed to unpack that py27_modules.7z, I will dig around for configuration info when I have time.

@sscadmin I didn't have to unpack anything, since everything is included in the archive (on the other hand I have already installed a 3. something version of Python, for other purposes!! ). Can you launch any ship or it get's this error?
