Some things never get old, do they?

Name's Dave. 29 years old, construction worker. NOT what people saw me doing when I was in grade school. They all figured I'd be a scientist, doctor, lawyer, video game maker... something. I was always the "brain". Now I drive a water truck. Why? Because all those things they expected me to do requred sacrifices they just weren't worth to me. I have no regrets. Well, ok, that's not true. I wish I had found some kind of middle ground; this blue-collar life can be so BORING sometimes.

I played Frontier: First Encounters for the first time in the mid to late '90s. I didn't like it until a bit later in my life, when I realized how much trouble the creators had gone to in order to make it lifelike. Realistic physics; weapons that are actually beams, instead of glowing slow-ass fakey bullets that you could not only see but dodge, sheeesh (take that, Freelancer.)

It could've been better though. And now I find this. A work in progress, like many others. Will you be more successful than Jades' abortive attempt at an unofficial sequel? I don't know. But I do hope so.

I'm a bit of an amateur science fiction writer. I can carefully think out technological details of sci-fi weapons (What might a tachyon beam do? How would it work? Hmm, perhaps a near-lightspeed plasma beam would achieve sufficient compression and temperature upon impact to result in nuclear fusion, causing an energy release wildly disproportionate to energy input...)

Or I can take a leap onto the wild side and come up with something hugely weird (Why did the aliens attack the asteroid colony on the fringes of the Alioth system? Well, one family had brought a jar of fireflies onto the thing, and the insects somehow emit a faint subspace signal that human technology cannot detect, but has hallucinogenic effects at interplanetary distances on this particular species that resembles a five-legged lobster with ears that look like coat sleeves, and when their passing survey ship fired on the colony they actually thought they were ordering Wallabaster eggs on their food synthesizers...)

So. If anyone should for some reason see this and decide I might have something to contribute to the story, let me know.

Hey Dave

It's nice to have someone new here with such original ideas. There are many indie devs around here and I'm sure some of them might actually use your talents for their games so keep an eye on them and your stories might just get in a game or more, for everyone to enjoy.

See you around

Welcome to the forums Dave!

I've also worked in some blue collar jobs, luckily I ended as a game tester. worse salary than the blue collar jobs but less pain in the bones at the end of the day.

I wish I could find the time to make something more creative than mixing some songs now and then, but as much as physical working leeches your power, mental work leeches your will. so at the end of the day I am happy to consume some scifi created by others instead of creating some myself.

Cheers!

Fellow beam weapon appreciator I salute you!

Dave. you're good... I really wanted to know more about that firefly incident lol.

Do you have any stuff published on the web we could read? I enjoy reading stories by players, their work is motivated by passion for the genre alone, rather than the blighted taint of profit and so has a purity and authenticity mainstream commercial scifi rarely manages to achieve.

Aaanyway, welcome aboard man. <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//biggrin.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Hi Dave

Welcome to the SSC, taking into account that imagination of yours, you sound an ideal candidate for mission creation! <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//girl_crazy.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Have fun out there!

Welcome to the forums Dave

You could also ask any of the indie developer if they are looking for back ground material.

Hey Dave

Know what your saying, I would like to learn some programming myself and I never seem to find the time. Crap I barely find time to play games anymore. I always enjoy reading peoples writings so if you write some stories be sure to post it. Enjoy the site, see ya in the forums.
