Here's a new one, Neptune's Pride a browser based 4x space game - Explore, Expand, Exploit, Exterminate!

http://np.ironhelmet.com/

Neptune's Pride is multiplayer game of Strategy, Intrigue and Galactic Conquest!

The game is a real-time game played over several weeks. You can log in at any time of the day to check the progress of your fleets, view the results of battles and issue new orders.

Explore, Expand, Exploit, Exterminate!

It's the game you know and love with a twist. A 4x Strategy game with its complexity stripped away to reveal an exciting game of diplomacy and strategic command.

How will you conquer the Galaxy?

Looks nice, though a bit heavy on the military aspects for my taste.

Being an online an easily accessible 4x game,

it will hopefully draw more players to (dare I say it?) the real 4x games. ,)

enjoying my first games of this at the moment.

the 2 games i'm playing are both in their 8th day.

because of how everything moves slowly

(e.g. moving ships from one star to another will take several hours,

research takes hours or days),

it won't be for everyone.

game 1, i've lost due to a back-stab from someone i allied with.

but another ally (who's pretty strong) has shielded my full demise.

and so after retreating as far as i can with the meagre number of ships i have,

i still have 1 star.

if i can establish a foothold on the neighborhing star which my ally has left empty for me,

and my ally lets me take over a few other stars,

i'll be able to come back.

game 2, i'm doing pretty well. ranked 3rd at the moment.

early on, player 5 very quickly established himself.

a "conglomerate" was suggested by other players to whittle him down.

instead, i swore fealty to player 5 and feed him information from the group e-mails i was getting from the other players.

this worked out well for me.

from being ranked 6th, i am now ranked 3rd due to player 5's

(who has a longer scanning range) guidance of which stars i should attack and

his shielding of me from another player threatening my flank.

though simplistic, there is some strategy in the game.

but the best parts are it's social aspects.
