It doesn't look like there is an article on SSC of Star Command, so I thought I'd add it. Not sure if that's OK, seeing as I'm not the developer, so sorry if it's not. 😐
Star Command is a game coming to the iOS platform (hopefully due sometime this year), being created by Warballoon, where the player builds and manages a starship as it travels the galaxy, so that means customising the captain, crew and layout of the ship. According to Warballoon, the player will be able to construct his starship with different rooms and items, with the ability to focus it on their own image- whether that be a giant warship teeming with weapons, a research vessel or a diplomatic vessel for high relations with alien races. There seems to be a high focus on customisation here.
A description from their kickstarter page:
Players will customize their ship in their own image - scientific players can build facilities for research and exploration. Tactical commanders can build heavy and powerful battleships. Diplomatic players can construct entertainment areas and quarters for visiting emissaries. Every ship is unique, and every time you play the game changes depending on your approach.
RESEARCH NEW TECHNOLOGIES
Research will unlock new areas to explore, new rooms to build, new weapons to install, upgrades to shields and unlocking abilities to meet new civilizations.
RECRUIT YOUR CREW
As players build their ship they can also expand their crew. Crew members are assigned a job and gain new abilities, leveling-up as they go. As new species are discovered, players can participate in crew-exchanges, hiring alien crew members for their ship.
EXPLORE THE UNIVERSE
Once you build a ship and hire your crew, you can travel deeper into new sectors to explore the mysteries of the universe. Players can discover strange planets, conduct away missions, explore derelict ships and conduct diplomacy with strange civilizations.
ENGAGE IN EPIC BATTLES
Players can encounter hostile ships, forcing you to actively fight with your ship. Weapons are armed, shields are charged and the crew takes battle stations. Crew members can be electrocuted, melted, liquified or sucked into the vacuum space - raising the stakes in every encounter.
INVADERS!
Whether your shields have been disabled or an unknown life form has found its way on board your ship, players will be tasked with defending their ship. In an X-Com style combat system, players will attack invaders, hiding in rooms and even sending crew to their certain doom for the survival of your ship.
CUSTOMIZE YOUR CREW
As you explore the universe, your crew will discover rare artifacts, plants, animals and other strange objects. You will have the ability to equip your crew with these special objects, giving your crew armor, new uniforms and even pets or other power-ups
They haven't released any trailers yet, but here is some screenshots:
I'm personally really looking forward to seeing how this turns out. Here's the links to their home site/ kick starter page:
This looks really good actually from the description provided. Star Command looks to cover some good points with ship design, tech and crew. Now all we need to see is how the combat for ship-to-ship and boarding will work. This game seems to have all the right features, lets hope they really pay attention to the small details and not rush it out the door.
Moving this to the mobile area.
Hope they go ahead and make a PC version of the game as it looks like a game I would enjoy. 😎
Heheheh, looks like my dream game, but from talking with the developers I think it may have a few draw backs... apparently the ship to ship combat is going to be minigame based, which even though I don't have much against that, I would much prefer a sim based game, or maybe something similar to Star Control 2. Also, looks like there won't be any random or procedural content at all, everything is mission based. So no random ship encounters or anything. I may be wrong on that, but that's sure what it sounded like. So the re-playability aspect could wear a bit thin...
I doubt these developers will rush it, they already missed deadlines for last year and seem very intent on not releasing it until it is absolutely perfect...
Not a deal breaker but you are right on TechnicalBYTE I think sim based combat would hit the spot.
I think this is expected from most mobile games, but if this comes to the PC it would need to have the procedural content or it wouldn't do well in my opinion. I think design and features have to go back to the cost point that you will be paying for the mobile game.
Always love that approach 🙂
Here is the latest trailer...
Star command have a new play through vid out.
