To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

First things first, the blurb:

Oolite is a space combat/trading game, inspired by Elite, powered by Objective-C and OpenGL, and designed as a small game that is easy for users to pick up, modify and expand upon. Almost every aspect of the game can be changed by using simple, free graphics packages and text editors.

Originally written for Mac OS X, and under continuous development for over seven years, Oolite is available for Mac OS X (10.3.9 and higher) and PCs running Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Linux. It requires at least a 400 MHz processor, 256 MiB of memory, and a graphics card capable of accelerating OpenGL graphics. The game and source code are offered for free under the GNU General Public License.

There is some really good artists making models for Oolite because they look great and they stick to the origins of elite and not really changing the feel just brushing it up. And feel free to post/re-post anything you want here because this area is meant for all Oolite info so post away.

Oolite 1.76 was released this Friday evening (Zulu time)... this is a major milestone for the devs, and I applaud them.

Hey that's great news Cody! 🙂 Hope my saved games and favorite OXPs still work with this new release.

Savegames will be no problem at all. The odd OXP may have some troubles, but most will be fine.

I've been running the 1.76 beta for some weeks, and I've had no problems with my 'hot set' of OXPs.

Well with Pioneer and Oolite what else do you need? One hardcore space sim and one badass space game!

Cody, thanks for putting my question on the Oolite forum, guess I coulda gone there myself.. 🙄

Just out of interest, how did the name Oolite come about? This may be common knowledge, but I thought oolite was a type of rock. That got anything to do with it? Or is it cos its "Oo" instead of "E" 😉

An oolite (oh-oh-lite) is indeed a rock of some sort. Oolite comes from 'Object Oriented Elite' (or maybe because it's powered by Objective-C and OpenGL)!

Thanks for the help Cody, looks like the right sort of thing. However, you might want to let them know that I tried the 30 day trial of pinnacle game profiler they linked to, and it threw up a security threat warning after installing. I'm on AVG 2012 free version(which may not be that good). May be a false alarm but cant be too cautious these days.
