To all SSC Station occupants
Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.
Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

This may well be bad news, but perhaps not unexpected - site traffic has been very slow lately.
It's beginning to be a bit of a pain administering this board's installation.
I'm very tempted to archive it and take it down.
Please, let me know here if this is still a valued resource for you.
Cheers, -- Giles.
Kinda sad, I suppose, but if it does go down, at least it's had a good run!
<chortles> Now it looks like it may have been reprieved. And this is my thousandth post!
In other news, the world's gone batshit fuckin' crazy!
Is it just taking down the forum or the whole site? The forums have many years worth of content in them. If anything you could purge anything older than 5yrs since it probably wouldn't be too useful these days (or whichever time frame is best). But no sense in just killing off the whole community.... thousands of users and thousands of posts.... bad enough there isn't really any space/scifi gaming sites left out there.
Well I would gladly work with Aegidian to transition the Oolite forums/site here if need be. Us space jockeys have to stick together 🙂 its an option. Trust me I know about site updates and technology upgrades... shit SSC has gone through this a few times and it sucks it always costs me money. Sometimes you wonder if its worth it, luckily I am a stubborn old pilot and don't give in easy 🙂
@cody only another 1500 more posts until your next promotion.... get busy soldier haha
It was just the forum he was on about, which has now been reprieved ('til the next time the bb installation borks).
Giles owns the forum, Jens owns oolite.org, and Winston owns the Oolite Wiki. All three are no longer active.
When devs move on, this kind of thing happens. The game itself hasn't had a project lead for quite a while.
I am sorry to hear this Cody. 🤨 Oolite played an important part in keeping the space sim flame burning during the dark days, in fact it still does. Even the modern day Elite, I very much doubt, would have had the impact it did without Oolite. If this really is the end for Oolite, it's a sad day but it's place in space sim history is assured.
For the time being, the game and the forum endure. But at some point, one or both will grind to a halt.
Nice and comfy in this here station though! Viva SSC!
Good to hear that the Oolite forum will remain, but in general I think most forums tend to be on the quiet side apart from the big game forums and places like Steam ect and it may just be a sign of the times as people move to more social media base forums.
Very true, I think the issue today is that a games lifespan has been reduced greatly.... back 10-20yrs ago games would be played for so much longer and fans of the games would create mods or content to keep people playing. These days gamers want the next best thing so games get neglected so quickly. I don't even buy multiplayer only games because the community for them dies so quickly its not worth it. Especially when you have a larger game library and it takes years/months to play a game and then you find out your all alone 🙂
SSC I look at as a more adult ... should I say 'Senior' gamer site 🤣 in the effect that we respect everyones opinion regardless of our own thoughts and we have respectful and knowledgeable conversations. Yeah us older gamers are set in our ways sometimes but in the end we are also loyal and dedicated.
Scifi game projects and communities will slowly drop-off over time as gaming moves to streaming and these companies like MSoft and Sony pushing entire game libraries for $10 a month... you have so much content available to you that a person will just push on to the next game instead of actually spending time on a game.
I will do my best to keep SSC going for many years and will always lend a hand to keep the nostalgia or the old ways around as long as I am able. SSC members are a family and I always look forward to logging in and see who has posted something. Our lives are busy and forum communities are more personal in nature so its not as convenient to post 🙂
But like I have stated before @Cody, if Oolite needs any help at some point if they need to bring the site down I have no problem in providing a space and do what I can to migrate the SQL data into SSC database so all that content can survive for many years to come. Its tough running these communities because these providers are always raising costs on us and I do my best to run as lean as possible to keep my yearly costs down. So I understand the issues as to why people bring sites down. But I truly do hope Oolite project and community stick around for many more years.
Oolite, even without further development, will outlive me (as should the machine I built recently). I ain't so sure about the forum though. For this old dinosaur, the idea of streaming a game is abhorrent - but as you say, everything's heading that way. Luckily, I've just eaten a fiery chicken curry, and I'm feeling far too good to indulge in a rant.
