To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

Seems pretty pricey.

I agree, I will check this price again at Christmas 2016 🙂

Plus this is new tech and not a whole lot support this fully out of the gate, maybe 2017 purchase to see how this evolves will be a better bet. Facebook owns Oculus so it will be interesting on how they leverage this technology as well.

But if anyone at Facebook or Oculus are reading this I will gladly write a review on one if you send me one 🙂

I am guessing that Eve Valkyrie and other vr specific game makers might be a bit put out.

Most of the estimates I have seen were between $300/$400 and as much as I like to buy one I think I will give it a good 18 months before looking at it again.

Yeah, this is not the sort of price range they were hinting at.  This is slightly more than a high end video card.  Said video cards are also probably barely adequate (if at all) at doing the kind of impressive renders we are seeing on monitors these days on the oculus so... can't say much of this is exactly a strong impetus to buy the thing.  I think there will have to be a device for <400$ before VR can really take off.

Probably a case of waiting to see what happens as ExpandingMan points out most people will have to upgrade their computers in order to use it which will add to the cost.

Might be a chance for Sony here if they price their VR below the Oculus price or bundle it with a PS4 for $600.

Wow, the Brits have it particularly rough.  I saw that it costs 500£.  According to google that's 730$.  That is really getting to be quite a lot more than even a high-end video card (though I suppose they pay more for those in Britain as well).

This pricing is just not going to work.  They are going to prove all of their critics right.  Then, after the VR scene rapidly fizzles due to lack of popularity, it will take another 20 years for it to re-appear.  I really wish they could have waited another few years until prices are more reasonable.

As for me, this thing:

(or something very similar) is going to be a much higher priority for me this year.  So I guess it'll be another few years for me.

This looks really nice and the same price as the oculus, I think I would use this a lot more and it would give me a reason to have 3 monitors 🙂

Can't you just purchase Oculus from the USA and not have to spend so much locally to get one? That is quite the jump in price $131 dollars more than what I would pay.

On a funny note I did read the other day that the porn industry is already working on how to best use VR tech, once they have something concrete the price will drop because more people will buy it.... 😉
