I didn't know where to post this so i'm trying over here.

Maybe there are star wars fans here too, just like me.

If you ever played SWG you know Sony did a bad job and changed the game into something that most of its stable players did not like.

So those players united, learned coding and made the star wars galaxies emulator,an emulator that brought back star wars as it was before the "combat upgrade" that basically changed everything.

Note: this stuff is legal, this is not a "private" server.

For more on the game itself (or legality issues):

Enjoy,it really is one of the greatest games out there.

Cultist is there a beginners page to see what we need to have to start using this? I take it you have to have the actual SWG game discs? Looks interesting from the info I got from the forums. I think I need to register to actually see the good stuff.

I'm just surprised Sony or George Lucas is letting this project happen 🙂

Cultist, how stable are the servers? Are there resets of accounts or clean wipe of the game?

I just want to make sure that the time you put into the game isn't ruined every few months.

yes,i wipe will follow,i do not know when.

the server is a test server and not everything was implemented as was in the original.

right now its not worth to invest too much time in it since a iminent wipe, but after that game will be wipeless.

I haven't signed up to the forums yet and I will but. Is this just a glorified private server running SWG? There has been some private servers I have used for other MMO's like WoW and Lineage 2 and eventually they get shutdown because the company squashes them. What is SWGemu doing that is different that gives them permission to run the server?

I haven't kept up on SWG info lately are they shutting down the game soon or something?

I'd like to point out there is another emu in develpment called SWG: ANH. Neither SWGEmu or SWG: ANH will be emulating servers for the Jump to Lightspeed expansion any time soon. I believe SWGEmu has a lot of the packets researched for JTL but they won't work on it until the meet their 1.0 release.

Both of these emulators are commited to bringing back the early gameplay called PreCU (Pre Combat Upgrade)

I think there are two major reasons why these emus are not being shut down. First they are bringing back an older version of game play that no longer exists on SOE servers. Second Lucasarts owns the content and they generally don't sue star wars fans. So as long as everything is nonprofit it should be cool.

I don't Think SWG is shutting down but they have done some server consolidating. The pop. isn't as large as it once was. I have a feeling when SW: the old republic MMO is released. That it won't take more than a year for SOE to shut down SWG.

As for server stability. I have attended a server stress test. And with the right hardware and connection the server pop should be able to exceed 2500.

to check progress I usually visit the forums and SwgEmu's assembla at http://trac2.assembla.com/swgemu/timeline

Is there a particular server that is more far along in development than the other? And does SWGEmu or SWG: ANH doing different things on their servers or are both just trying to bring back the original gameplay?

I'm going to sign-up to one of the servers and try this out and report back 🙂

Well its kind of hard to judge which is further along. Both are making good progress. I think SWGEmu Might be a little behind now but not by much. IMO SWGEmu severs will probably be easier to modify and make custom gameplay choices. (like removing jedi or making jedi toons harder to obtain)

Both Groups seem like they are committed to bringing back the original gameplay first. With SWGEmu there seems to be more discussion on what can be added and modified after version 1.0

In addition to the Emu groups there are other Guild groups that have committed to running their own servers along with some of their own mods. But, guild groups are dependent on the Emulator being completed.

Here is a site with some older links to guild server groups(not sure if all are working)

http://swgemuservers.com/

here is a guild that seems pretty active/prommising, and has some members that are modders.

Seems like my cursor on screen can never access the icons on the lower right of the screen and hitting esc on the keyboard does nothing. Am I missing something simple?

The ALT key toggles cursor mode. hopefully that is your problem...

Shortcut for the game menu is SHIFT+ESC

Well I'm going to change my opinion on which is further along. SWGEmu has been updating their assembla page a lot more frequently these past few days. Although, so far no official update on the completion of the object restructure project.

They also just recently updated their server that handles the account logins and website. Which leads me to believe they are gearing up for lots more traffic.

The wipe of the test center might be getting closer.

Still, at this rate we won't see JTL for quite some time

UPDATE:

SWG: ANH announced June 2nd that their project will be going open source. Following the release TrueGalaxies.com plans on hosting a Beta TC.
