EDIT - An extensive marketing campaign is underway to re-brand this ship as the "Deneb Transport"

My first attempt at a model for for Pioneer (and generally first proper model)

Its still a WIP, things to complete:

Landing gear (50%)

Full efficient UV unwrap + final textures (placeholders at the moment)

LOD

Collision mesh

Labels / Decals etc

Its based on the design of the original Lion Transport from Frontier and its approx the size of the space shuttle (couple of meters longer and wider)

What you think?

[sharedmedia=core1678]

[sharedmedia=core1680]

It's a nice clean shape, I can't quite see that engine nozzle from the shots you've used so it looks a little odd.

Once you've got a bit more done I think it'll look even nicer  🙂

The engine nozzle is a little odd to be honest, its a sort of cross shape. With the rest being so smooth I wanted something a bit more interesting than a plain round nozzle.

Is there a special way to package up game files so they are easily extractable or do I just throw them in a zip file and let the user put them in the correct place?

For a mod you just need to package up the relevant folders and files into a ZIP.

For ships that usually means something like:

"/models/ships/Lion/*.*"

"/ships/Lion.lua"

Then the resulting ZIP, eg: "ZordeysLion.zip" just needs to be put into the "/pioneer/mods/" folder and the game should find it when loading.

I really like this. It looks like an interstellar business jet.

I added a link to the files in the original post.

I could do with some help balancing fuel use / price.

I have updated the mod zip file in the first post for the model formerly known as "Lion Transport". Now with fully working undercarriage.

Guess I have to pick a new name now, any suggestions?

no "Lion Transporter" and i will stay forever a "lion".

as if a name would change something, well, a question of mind setting, i guess.

but the ship is nice!

Maybe you could call it a Cub Transport, or pick the name of another large cat.

Thanks Brianetta, I like Deneb, it has a nice simple symmetry to it.

I have updated the download link in first post with the re-branded model, now with much better UV unwrap (But still unfinished textures)

Thanks Tourist.

For some reason the link gave the correct address if you copy and pasted it but clicking on it took you to the old version..

I have re created the link and it now points to the new .zip file for addition to your mods folder.

(You will need the latest nightly build to get the nav lights working)

Zordey, if this model's about done, you just about have time to submit it to the next alpha.

Friday 1 March, specifically. Or maybe Saturday 2 March, depending on timezones and if you tell me to hold off for a few hours while you put the finishing touches on (though honestly, I'd want to see something before that, I don't like doing review at the last minute).

OK I done some work on textures last night and I am trying to get the LOD working correctly today.

I will hopefully have a commit tonight.

In the mean time could someone have a look at the file in the first post and help me out with fuel use / exhaust velocity thing? I'm not sure where to start on that one.

I am going for reasonably slow but good fuel economy.

Also looking at the price of the other ships, I think they need adjusted / balanced.

We haven't tackled any of the ship balancing since we had all those LMR models. As long as your ship works, it's fine - we can (and will) balance its fuel efficiency with its cost and any other features it has, when the time comes to do them all.

Download file in original post updated with latest version:

  • New very low poly collision mesh
  • New Med / High LOD mesh triggering at 500px so high poly mesh only appears at very close zoom (med / High has approx half the triangles of High)
  • New low poly LOD mesh triggering at 20px
  • Labels added
  • Decals added
