Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.
Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

why do you started this retrospective?
since quite a long time i had this in mind, actually it's simply a existing alpha8 release in which i collected some models of "foreign" origin or which i made myself.
the true reason is that i liked to show off foremost how combat was before alpha9 release, this has no relation to Draq's topic, i started this last month in my "little cabin on the hill".
combat was far easier as now and i remember a comment on YT to one of my clips, in which release of pioner this "cool space battles" was possible, i had to disapoint him and tell him that it's long time past, it was a alpha6 release containing the "SW-XWA" ships i converted once.
his comment moves me since long, it shows me that i'm not the only one, that there might be others who like a pioneer how i see it, not because of "SW-XWA", because of combat and some other "nitpicking" things i dislike since quite a while.
what do i have to expect of alpha8?
don't expect to much, the grafics are lame compared to how pioneer looks & feels now, everything is in a quite rough state.
why should i play (test) this old release?
simply to give me credits?

what do you need? gold? i don't have, but a lot of work i can offer you,
further a "clean white canvas" to start all over again.
there are in fact many reasons i have to start at this point, like i said all this "nitpicking" things.
that is combat, the weak AI which i liked so much.
of course the LUA models resource, which makes things possible i miss since long.
i would like to work first on this, on the interaction between game and models, this is important to me.
just take a look at the quite simple cities, but there is a difference, we have already 3 conditions (tags) for city buildings,
"city building" in general they get scattered all over the city
"city starport" usually close to a starport and things like a "radio antenna" will obviousely be of this type, as well as warehouses or similar.
"city power" suitable for power plants, remember the windpower in FE2's outdoor worlds? just as example, it could be actually simply industry as well.
but i feel this should be expanded, more conditions are needed, before a city becomes a halfaways realistic shape i would need at first a possibility to determine, "outdoor world" or "hostile world", this affects the whole appearance of a city, from the starport to the powerplants. "windmills" won't work without a gaseous medium 😉
factions and indusrial degree of development are of course things to think of.
crime? why not, lousy, half ruined buildings on a world with high crime, reasonable, no? (maybe even no real starport, some "fires" which mark the landing area on a patch of ground, nice idea no?)
perfect clean buildings representing a high life standard, also reasonable.
and dammit, no more skyscrapers on moons or in hostile environment, it hurts my eyes, ouch! (they hurt my eyes anyway, how "Frei Otto" stated: "if i walk through ANY city today i get nausea") but ok, on outdoor worlds with a low standard and a high crime skyscrapers make some sense.
they reflect exactly this, low standard, high crime. erm yes, a little bit of SimCity for Pioneer, please.
really i would like to workout this as first, the appearance of the cities, of course it's not relatet to gameplay, but it builds the character of the game.

how to solve this "out of a pepper shaker" appearance?
wouldn't it be better to if not to procedurally generate then at least to "prebuild" patches, quarters of a city?
yes i adapted this even from FE2, cities are made of prebuild quarters, certain buildings of a quarter are exchangable, randomly.
this lets the appear different without being truely different.
height differences have to be solved and the longer i think about as more the idea of a flattened terrain pleases me.
but i can see also a solution like "GreyOxide" presented it once, city quarters on blocks to level the height differences.
his preview to such looked very nice to me.
on such a "block" with given dimensions we still could scatter the buildings simply, it's a idea and it will look pleasing i guess.
but this needs to be worked out, see I NEED A ALPHA8 SOURCE.
the goal is: if a newbe lands on planet x he has to state: "stunning, fantastic, i never have seen something like that before"
and/or "cool, this city looks complete different to planet y's cities". "let's see what kind of powerplants do they have here?"
"farming or industry?" (hey yeah, the green patches, plantings, someone remember? on hostile worlds it could be something like TomM's original Dome building, i haven't forgot this one, no no, not me, in principles my "giant mushroom" or dome is based on his idea, i just lifted it off the ground because his dome was usually buried half underground)
of course this is even limited and soon one will have explored most types of, but nonetheless, they are random.
anyway, how they look now is displeasing, each looks like the other, well hmmm i don't know i'm resident of the "old world", here every city looks different.
ok, that's pointed a little high, but to reach a far target you have to point high.
and sorry i can't see something that will help us to solve all this except some script, we had already once but it has been trashed, for no good, imho. (hmm, i never forget that this guy who started "rhodina" stays to scripts, he's certainly no idiot and even TomM had his good reasons).

something i forgot, the game is a WIP!
it has bugs in the code and of course SOME MODELS MIGHT CRASH THE GAME, i don't know, but it could be.
YOU start unfortunately with a totally overloaded "Rapier", this i can't influence actually, hence the "Rapier" has 10tons overweight.
remove 9tons hydrogene, the missiles, and dismount the 2MW pulse laser to get a suitable starting ship.
don't be surprised if you jump to "system x" and you didn't arrive alive, the pirates are mercyless and fire at you before you can move.
see this as a challange, save often and reload, next time better luck.

you will find some disabled models, foremost in the stations folder, they are simply zipped, you can unzip them but ON YOUR OWN RISK.
the hostile (sealed) groundstation has a error, i have to fix that.
the outdoor station1 produces a error, i have to fix that.
the outdoor station2 has not working adverts, i have to fix that.
there is one spacestation you can try if you like "Mars Station" it's a copy of the "Mars High" type from FE2.
it's a extremely large station and the only reason was to test if such oversized models will work,
that was two years ago when i planned my "Big Wheel", then i made this model and found out it won't work in a recent release, the size of
objects is limited for what reason ever.
not so in alpha8, it works but "Mars Station" has no "space station entry" no "lift" in other words, but the ship(s) can dock.
also i like to revive s2oDan's "Hollow World" station, i like this one much and you will find it soon in "alpha8" (or what the name will be ever in future).
about the "Big Wheel" i didn't like to lose many words, intentionally i liked to surprise everybody (and make everybody else jealous) with it, but it isn't finished and will take some extra time.
ships are in general what you already know of me, there is a folder "notes" there you will find a list of the ships i used for "alpha8"
this also because i changed some names to give it a little more continuity.
we won't have things like "imperial...xxx" nor that i used any of the names you know from FE2.
ships is only ONE left of what could be called "elite", it's the "Marauder" (former "Imperial Courier"), but since i feel this isn't a "copy of" and more just "leaned on", i see no problems with this ship, the shape could be also leaned on SW as well (i never released this copy, but i have one very similar SW ship, but since the model belongs to "Dark Sabre" and because he's a bit "greedy" with his models i never released it for Pioneer, looks like he has a made special agreement with "Lucasarts", or he stated he has, who knows for sure, he's angry because in the very past some third party sold his models).
there was a "Viper X", now it's called "Venom" and the ship looks quite different to a "Viper".
we have still a "Explorer" a innocuous or innocent name, former this was the "Typhoon" which is even a nice name for a ship, but i reserved it for a fighter.
the "Imperial Interceptor" simply lost the "Imperial" in the name and is now a Police ship with which you better didn't mess.
s2oDan's "Imperial Explorer" turned to "Terra Class", i had this idea after naming first my "Terra" ship to this, then i fixed the capacities of both and "Terra" is the largest most voluminous ship thus it's called now "Galaxy Class", both have "proper names", the "Terra Class" ships are named after well known physicists, the "Galaxy Class" are named after ancient egypt pharaos. the list is expandable, suggestions are welcome.
other large ships will have in future "proper names" as well, it suits them.
it's something different as just "XY-1234" if a ship is named "Newton" or "Tutanchamun", if this can be once reflected in the game we wil see.
of course due to the random selection based on the last 4 glyphs in the registration, there will be actually possibly more then one "Newton", but i gues even such is to manage in future ("remove a used name from the table of proper names to use" since there will be a limit of appearance of such large comrades it should workout fine, or the future table of names could be expanded to hundrets to avoid a "running empty" of the table, or we could state "if the last entry in the table is removed, setup a new table, with the same content" i guess doubles you won't see often anyway, besides they have a reg. thus a "Newton GS-2014" isn't the same ship as a "Newton TM-2007"). classic names like "Enterprise" are even innocuous, many naval ships have had this names, also "Endeavour", "Challenger" or even "Santa Maria", "Niña" or "Pinta".
but of course i like reminescences to famous ppl, gods, kings, whatever. a "Thor" will be as nice as a "Theoderich" or even a "Nero" or "Marc Aurel",
a "Widukind" to counter "Charlemagne" resp. "Carolus Magnus" why not. we can choose from thousends, the web will help us.
not important, but even the fifth finger counts to have a good grip.
erm well, if someone remenbers who modelled the "Kestral", i would appreciate this, you find it in the game named now as "Crecerelle".
ah, to our non english speaking fellows, "alpha8" has no translation, but of all the nitpicking things i find this really unimportant,
for several reasons, personally i never had problems to play FE2 in english, the few words you need to understand the short sentences are easy to learn. somehow i feel english suits this game best, i even play pioneer still always in english.
therefore i would appreciate more names in "foreign" languages, even for the ships, this idea came with the "Crecerelle".
e.g. a "Aluette" would be fine as well, also because blériots first monoplane was named like this.

it leaks of countless things, nonetheless, this release of Pioneer i play actively, i like to make myself a life, a carreer in this release.
especially the planets leak of the beauty you know from Pioneer (on the other hand, hmm i really like some of the cliffs, the rough terribly high mountains look reasonable to me on hostile worlds with no or near to no atmosphere), but this is first to solve, second as important or not as my ships.

of course i like to have them in a better shape.
but other more basic things are important to solve.
like i said appearance of cities, resp. how to build cities, how the models will look is a future task, they will prob. look more basic as right now for a while, until this "building of" is solved satisfying.
combat, i like to keep or stay to how it is.
you will find the original flattened galaxy in this release, it has advantages to gameplay, but this is to debate, i like both, the "flattened galaxy" and the "real sized".
implementation of even more communication between models and game, i would like.
reflection of your actions in the game, one of the most important tasks in my opinion.
i feel it should be possible to explore, i mean really explore worlds.
actually the systems aren't outsourced in this release, but soon as we had this i thought:
hmm... couldn't we let the program write out such scripts of systems? (it could be also a binary i guess)
further wouldn't it be possible then if i discover a system to name it by choice?
to (if we have ever) place a mining machine or some other equipment to analyze the surface?
furthermore, seen if factions are sourced out to, can't we change a faction a system belongs to?
in the meaning of, i lost this battle, now system x turns from faction-a to faction-b, because i failed in a task?
since i like to stay to a single player game i see no problems with synchronizing,
but on the other hand i guess it would be possible to exchange some data between players.
ah yes, "single player game", nonetheless a dogfight between two players would be possible,
e.g. you meet at a given station for this "extra feature".
it could be as well something which has absolutely no relation to the rest of the game.
e.g. like the "Mario v.s. Luigi" thing in super mario. it's a game in the game, a extra feature and didn't affects the "real game"
sort of a bonus.
decades, really decades ago i dreamed of "Frontier" resp. "Pioneer" (those who know me well, know this already), but i had no idea that something like this exists or was already planned. i was just a "invaders" freak ("galaga" or whatever spaceshooter of the 80's) who lived innocently in a deep valley in switzerland, but i dreamed of such a game, docking to stations, land on planets and yes even that your action as pilot should affect the environment.
the very maximum we had back then was cheated 3D, like in "Star Strike" (intellivision). strategy games like "Kaiser" (C64) and adventures, phew adventures? ok like "Adventure" resp. "Advanced Dungeons and Dragons" (intellivision/parker). but in my "dream" or daydream i saw all mixed into one.
so far to how long that this idea of a game moves me, it moves me since i'm 16 years old, since 1982!
Frontier was like a revelation to me, Pioneer is heaven!

besides, walterar, "Albert" was a interesting character, yes almost a "mad scientist", in the meaning of "madness or lunacy isn't far from genius".
it's a circle (like most things) and it closes at this very small point or edge.
his son was a "lunatic" or in other words he wasn't able to live in society, maybe today it would be possible, but back then they put him into a "madhouse".
that is, we (and of course in any other country) had locked up a lot of geniuses, society had no use for them and they didn't found a place in it.
unfortunately i missed this opportunity, but right this spring was a arts exhibition of such "mad geniuses", a psychatrist back then collected the work of them, because he thought maybe one day ppl would understand better.
the composed, painted and wrote prosa and i know it isn't crazy what they did, today such is called "ars brut".
and tell me what you like, much of their output looks better to me as what is sold for many kilo $.

I think your comments about city generation are spot on. From what I've read there's a lot to be written in C++ for the things you suggest to happen, but people are working on it.
Pioneer is not Frontier, but it's going to be awesome!

in advance, i do like the progress which has been made with PIONEER, visually at least.
i guess there's
a) a note in the folder "notes", in which i have let my thoughts run wild.
B) primary, i like to start on a "clean white canvas", if PIONEER would be one of my pictures i would trash it and start, like i said, on a clean white canvas.
sounds a bit hard, i know. but if a artist is dissatisfied with his own work he will tear the picture apart and start a new one.
ok this is not exactly the same, hence i like to start at exactly this point, alpha8, before the AI got to hard for most, before lateral accel changed to something i'm not sure of if it's at least halfaways realistic.
besides, i guess the degree of realism is not so important, important is that a "rookie" can start a carreer and is able to survive.
you start with a lousy ship and a few credits, you can easy compare this to a carreer in SCGT as example, you have some money and can buy a car, but it's a shitty car and it leaks of any upgrades, brakes, tires, motor, suspension, everything is "stock". you race and probably hopefully advance to 5th (to be 1st you can only dream of), you buy yourself then upgrades, a turbo, better suspension, better brakes, it's your choice and finally you have to mess wiht your upgrades. probably next season you are able to win the class you're driving in and you advance to the next class, again either you take your mocked up car or buy a new one which is again from stock.
so that's how a carreer works, you start as rookie and advance step by step.
besides, yes that's boring sometimes, if you're really a rookie, i mean a newbe to the game, you probably have to race the same races over and over again, before you are good enough in handling the machine, before you know the tracks like your own pocket, this can be boring, but this is how a carreer works. it's not "i'm Schumacher" from the very start, it's in other terms commander Jameson, the "space rookie".
there have been made so many changes to the game which i personally dislike.
that is i.e., you know me, the lack of the LMR, whatever someone else might think, i'm still in love with it.
i repeat myself, it opens a lot of doors which stay otherwise closed, i think, it's my view to it and i can't speak for others.
it's also the idea of "true mechanics", animations based on expressions work for real, with a matrix i can do things which would be never possible in reality or not in this way. it's a object which follows a path, a matrix, and this you can "bend", but i can't "bend" a conrod in reality,
it would break. thus if i like to get a conrod working i have to find the proper way how it works in reality.
the overweighting of postprocessing, we have comrades here who can't run the game, what do they get as answer? "your machine is at the limit" (in other terms lame, "go buy a better one"), sorry i wouldn't like it if i would get such a reply.
i think PIONEER should run even on lower specced machines, or is this a project only for the riches?

i was told my "countless animations eat up framerate", well i knew that it won't harm a tenth part of what postprocessing does to the framerate.
it's open source and we have to expect that open source users haven't the right money, as example myself, why do i use blender and not 3dsMAX?
simply because i haven't the bucks for it, i neither would have had them when i was working, a full *"pro" license costs as much as i earned in one YEAR!, but i needed the money to
feed my children and not to buy a software license. it's to debate if that is really good that some earn simply to much and have lost any sense what the money, the energy, the work behind is worth, but this doesn't belongs here. (*pro means you are allowed then to sell the work you made with it).
we might haven't the right money but that didn't means we are idiots, you don't have to be a idiot to be a craftsman, but you need a certain view to what is really worthy.
i quit my my profession as a textile technician long ago, maybe i would have become a good one, maybe i would be in a different situation in life as now,
BUT injustice isn't worth the money i could have earned with this. there isn't much business like textile where so much injustice exists!
i found it much more satisfying to work as a construction worker, to earn some money for REAL WORK, righteously.

"Max" should be able to deform his head, but foremost he has to able to read text, if not construct, procedurally generate, text.
projects which solved such from the mathematical side exist since the days of good old AMIGA500.
what i have to do is to find a fitting method to give "Max" a 3dimensional shape.
i'm mostly responsible for models, i know, but i have a head full of ideas what can be done to get the ideas of the old days in a new shape.
i would like to use the procedural generating for many things, this is the clue, the essence of PIONEER.
models, shape of planets, postprocessing all this is secondary.
it's the flesh and important to, but without bones the flesh falls apart.
it's without bones just a shapeless mass, something glibbery which crawls around.
on the other hand, naked bones are... erm, just naked.
i'm a DREAMER yes, but could it be better?
let's truely RIDE THE BLUE SKIES, first there is a dream, then we find a solution.
i wonder what "intys" developing team would have made of the tools we have today...
certainly not something stiff or limited, they broke limits already back then, asking;

"how can we animate things more pleasing, more fluid as just some sprites which move over the screen?"
"how can we reach more interaction?"
"how can we reach that something isn't so easy to foresee?"
often the solution was quite simple, but one has first to ask if it's possible, to do this very first step of dreaming.
in fact the team was one part designers and dreamers, the other half developers and programers who showed them the possibilities but also the limits.
one part hippies in tie-dyes, the other part "white coats".

a few words to what i've read right now,
i don't HATE the SGM,
i do see that i was nearly the only one who dared to mess with it, thus i do understand the decision.
(on the other hand i'm no genius, or didn't see myself as, is it really such a problem? or maybe just a little lazyness?
neither i can subscribe the the LMR was a mess, hard to maintain, but a mess i have in my living room, i know how such looks)
besides, once this branch, or better it's actually only a lose idea, stands on his own feet it will get a "proper name" and i will move it to a different branch in SSC as well.
but really, first i need a source of alpha8 state, then i can start, whatever might come out of it.
let's say do this as a last honor to the guy who brought those "unwanted" (it let's me cry, no one told this before) FE2 ships into pioneer.
that i'm able to do my own, you can see here, i'm no "plagiator" how i was called once.
but see, if i wouldn't have copied them, then maybe i wouldn't have understood the LMR at all.
it's like the copies of my japanese brothers, besides i'm german (papers at least) and hmmm... a somewhat more as a century ago germany was in the same position.
"hey the germans copy us, we need a branding to protect our ideas" (that was the day when "made in" was born, unfortunately it turned out to be different as thought,
"made in germany" turned to a sign of quality instead as ment to protect the UK market from cheap copies).
same happened later to the germans with japan.

the problem is from my pov, that i would have to "step back" for many things, this seems to me far more complicated as to start in the past.
i compare again to a picture, alpha8 is like a sketch, it isn't painted yet, just started out, alpha31 resp. genesia (am i right?) is in a far more advanced state, to work on this picture is nearly impossible except you would work in the already given direction. the colors have been set, the background is almost finished, certain things on foreground have been positioned and are drawn fully.
but what if i didn't like this picture?
"quack" on what is already there? that won't work or won't turn out well, i guess the patient is then in danger of his life.
no, i can only take a pot of chalk and "destroy" all what is already there if i dislike the result, artists work this way.
Just only disapointed to be alone again on my Genesia project , please gernot , take a little time to discover what i've make since alpha 30 and , if you'r alway right to begin at alpha 8 so make it , but read my changelog from the beginin of genesia and you'll see it's not at all a pioneer game now ^^,
Afterall genesia is in LMR ? and i've working hard onn that , so if i must continue alone , it's not a problem for me , and maibe i can take some part of your work to increase my Genesia ^^

the thing is only, like i said above, it's working backwards, not genesia is working backwards, but to change those things of which i feel they have get lost over the time.
to start with the models, the situation in genesia is we have two competing systems in one engine.
to workout the things i like, one must be removed, SGM isn't suitable for certain things, or i can't imagine that it will be.
no matter how, one is enough the other is hindering.
ok, this is to solve, i guess.
anyway, if we really like to do this, then we must make a agreement, we must find first a "common denominator".
means what do we like to see in the game.
from my pov genesia needs a congruos look, for the models side.
in fact this would mean, not much else models as i have actually in my retrospective.
we can offer the SW models and Frontier ships as MOD or as a "sidetrip",
genesia (in future i will refere here to pioneer only as genesia) offers enough freedom to have three parallel working releases.
i guess this would be a good idea, let me show you why;
a SW mod could be worked out fine, i mean if we like we can change the whole game to something SW like, not only a few ships i converted,
the whole situation of the galaxy in SW, genesia would offer such, needs prob. a few changes in the source, most i could do already.
for the FE2 mod or version, we could stay to a true FE2 environment reflecting the situation like we know it from FE2, actually that would need no or little changes
(but factions we need at max. 4 not hundrets of, that makes no sense to me).
it's settled in our galaxy, what we have is fine.
for the lets say typical genesia, we could settle it i don't know where, i think it doesn't have to reflect our galaxy, it's something i would like much, in other terms
nearly no scripted systems, all or most is procedural generated.
but it's to debate, i'm open for ideas of what sort ever

the very first step in this direction would be a slight change in the source, i don't know if i'm able to manage this (that's why i liked to start with alpha8, it would be easier for me to get a overview, i worked already once on a alpha10, i know what and where i will find it), but the "blank" sector 0,0,0 must be removed and we must find a different way to avoid conflicts between generated and scripted systems. i guess a simple solution would be to tell that as long as there is a scripted system in a sector there can't be a generated one. not a perfect solution, but it would open the possibility to change the galaxy fitting to what story environment ever.
a further step is a close look at the shaders (i fear this much), because i encountered a extreme slowdown on framerate even in genesia since you once took over the shader scripts from a newer version, am i right?
what exactly caused this slowdown and it's a remarkable one, i haven't found out yet, i searched once for the cause but like i said i haven't found it. (but i have to say that i lost patience soon, i didn't spent much time for this).
what we MUST do, to open a own branch here on SSC, genesia leaves the path of pioneer, it's something own and if we like to develop on it it will be even more something of it's own.

we can nail this down now, but i guess i need a few weeks, anyway from on the 1st of july i will be offline again for two or three weeks.
in this time i can work on the source a little bit, to see if i'm still able to compile it, (i had troubles once with a recent release to compile with MSVC, erm also a reason for me to start with alpha8, this one i can compile. i'm not sure, but you know the guys use a open source compiler now and everything matches this one. of course i could use the same, hmmm.... exactly this is a point i dislike, you noticed the prog. has boosted in size enormously since this change? i don't know if this is just because all libraries are built in, or is there more behind, i assumed once, just by looking at the file, it looked obscure to me to see n-times the same data)

I know "Darksaber" made a agreement with "Lucasarts" (now it belongs to Disney) to use original SW content.

this Textures he didn't made himself, this is original "Lucasarts" artwork, from head to toe.

I have always considered Genesia (which is the basis, my personal version of) as a MOD ( total MOD ), which let me complete freedom to put what makes me happy.
You say me " come aboard " but to make what ? , i'm not a coder , not a stylist, and a poor modeler. Just a fan of the elite universe ^^.
And i repeat , you're completly free to take any parts of Genesia for use in your project (it was my original project in first : maintain alive the LMR parts of Pioneer for a future usage 🙂 )
No matter if since the beginin i've make some modif of the source, you're free to discard what you want on that,but i keep the original Genesia project alive (and alway in constant dev with my means or with the help of friends Occasional) because it's my point of vue of the game, like i want it will be 🙂

further i made a quick "new one", formerly it has been called "Kestral" but the author of the model i can't remember, neither i find a entry here on SSC when i search for "Kestral". the model has been renamed by me to "Crecerelle*, which means "Kestrel" (the ordinal name was "Kestral").

Like the Crecerelle Gernot, reminds me of one of the smaller Romulian Raptor ships from Star Trek.
certainly the modeler had something like that in mind, only far smaller.
