I trust everyone here has made a pledge?
I probably won't even have that much time to play the game when it comes out - except for testing the scripted solar systems I made for Pioneer I havent touched a computer game since university. But I think we can all agree that none of us would be in this forum if it wasn't for Elite. So I guess I think of it as a thank you, a payback to Braben for what he's done.
I'm sure you all have a similar story to this one but I played Elite on the Atari ST as a kid and one day I wanted to get across the galaxy super quick (on map 1 you have cyborgs in the top right hand corner) and so i did a hyperspace to system, use escape capsule, fly to new system, escape capsule, all the way to the end. Of course the Atari packed a sad and blew up. But then dad fixed it and I was back into Elite. That game was my childhood.
So the point of my blathering? Please put in a pound or two if you havent already. Every last bit helps.
Cheers
John
Very true Thargoid, every penny could count. Many have misgivings about the kickstarter page, but at the end of the day ,It's still David Braben and it is still Elite.
I have not made a pledge. Grateful as I am to Braben for inspiring me with Elite, Frontier and First Encounters, I have already paid him back for those titles by buying them in the first place. I'm not going to help pay for a game that I know very little about, simply out of some continuing sense of gratitude.
This is a new game, which might not be to my taste, for a platform which I don't use. There's no real description of what the game will be. I just can't seem to get excited about it.
No, I'll invest in Pioneer. This includes my saving up for a computer which can compile Pioneer in under twenty minutes - something far more desirable to me.
I'm not giving him any money either. His pitch was downright arrogant and insulting, and the lack of information since then shows an apathy I just can't abide. I think it's also too coincidentally timed with the Star Citizen Kickstarter, which is a textbook case of how to do a campaign WELL. The Elite campaign, on the other hand, is a disaster in my opinion. I sincerely hope the game gets funded and comes to fruition, but after a decade of him talking about doing it, I don't have my hopes up.
Ill wait for it to be actually produced, and if it looks good, ill buy it. Too long in the waiting i'm afraid.
In the meantime... Pioneer!
I posted about this here: http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/topic/3084-elite-classic-video-games-remake-seeking-backers/
I myself am undecided.
It's not that I would wish him to fail, I even harbour secret desires to do terrible things to Pioneer that no-one here would agree with, that would look a lot like what he's doing! A "Pioneer: Dangerous" fork anyone?
It's just that he's had the time, the money, the talent, the staff and everything else required. I just don't think he really has the vision anymore.
I'd fund "Infinity-Universe", I even got quite far through the interview process a couple of times, but they don't have the money to pay people right now and I already volunteer here <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_e_smile.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
I might fund Limit-Theory because it's another dreamer asking us to help him succeed.
I've already funded "Sir, You are being hunted" because... well because it's gentrified tea drinking robots in a procedural British countryside...
Braben has just had too many years of me waiting for him, and now I have Pioneer.
I might still fund him anyway just to say thanks, but I'm not sure that's a good reason for funding it.
I might also try to use the word "I" less in future posts <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_e_biggrin.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />
I thankyou.
I, Andy
Invested because I've always loved the games, it'll be interesting to see what comes out.
Shouldn't be too hard, I've just built a little arcade box (Mini-ITX) and it compiles Pioneer, from configure to make completion in just under 1 minute. Got to love Ivybridge these days.
I'm thankful to DB and IB for making Elite. But I've backed this project not because I'm thankful but rather I really want a DB's new Elite.
I wish Ian Bell could have been a part of Elite:Dangeous as well.
I have not.
Simply because he started the whole project with so little to show or explain.
The whole KS-page lacks anything professional.
All that it made me a bit suspicious.
And quite frankly, that kid Josh from 'Limit Theory', could give Braben some pointer at how things are done.
"So how about No!"
I stick with Pioneer. Which more Elite than Braben ever was.
I'm in - I think well you know what if it doesn't get funded I haven't lost anything.
I love me some pioneer, I love me some evochron, I love me FE2 on my iphone (just managed to get an Asp Explorer set up so I can actually go exploring without the drive failing!!! Something I've been trying to work out how to do for over a year!!)
And holy f88king s*8t yes I will love me an Elite IV if it comes out!!! This was a "Shutup and take my Money!" moment for me. I disagree with the nay-sayers here... I will always love the... pioneering spirit of pioneer, but its a little sad to hear the tone here. Aren't you the least bit excited to see DB succeed after so much vapor-ware times??? cheer up Brianetta me old butterbean, the sandpit is pretty big you know. I reckon it would even be driving awareness to the greatness that is Pioneer.
Star Citizen looks pretty schmicko... but no seamless planetary landings meant I was less interested... I mean the X series had beautiful planet backdrops too.
The kids game, you mention Fluffy 'Limit Theory' looks great for one dude's effort (the neon nebula background plague of space aesthetic aside)... I hope he succeeds too... but seamless landings are still in question.. I think he'll find issues with doing that well - just as i-novae, and pioneer have (and Dave Brabben this time around too I bet) ... or he won't do that at all. No SLP, no deal for me.
Which still leaves FE2, FFE, Pioneer & Evochron as the games for me... and hopefully i-novae and E:D sometime around 2014 - both i-novae and E:D are getting my money pending successful kickstarter campaigns
I was never really exposed to Frontier or Elite until a few years ago... my gaming roots are in the "realistic" flight simulator genre with some excursions into space to blast some Kilrathi and get back my Steltek Gun <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_e_biggrin.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />
Elite IV is something I've heard of for years in the same way Duke Nukem was going to kick my ass right through the screen... it's been a joke for years and still is in a way...
I haven't pledged any money, but I don't pledge money online to anyone... I simply don't have the resources. I've got a few bucks I could spare... but no credit card, no paypal, no bitcoins... I'll send him a couple Canadian dollars in the mail if he wants (you lurking out there?) but only for a linux version, or at the very least a version known to play nice with WINE.
It does look like a cool game and when it comes out I'll consider buying a copy... but kickstarter isn't for me.
Aren't you the least bit excited to see DB succeed after so much vapor-ware times?
I am <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_e_smile.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
But I have my reservations. Personally I never really adored Elite, it felt like the kid's version of FFE. It was before my time as well, whereas Frontier was released when I was 11 and was just about the most amazing thing I had ever seen. <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_e_smile.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
I wanted Elite:4 to be a continuation of what was started with Frontier and FFE... To me that would mean a seamless galaxy (or universe), complete with relativistic effects <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_e_smile.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> Dynamic factions involvement (Things change based on the player's involvement, this was started in FFE, and factions interact with each other), dynamic galaxies (galaxy or universe changes due to unforseen events, either faction battles or natural events ) ect.
More Thargoids! Or Thargoid mysteries.. <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_e_smile.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
I even harbour secret desires to do terrible things to Pioneer that no-one here would agree with, that would look a lot like what he's doing! A "Pioneer: Dangerous" fork anyone?
Haha <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_e_smile.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> I'm there <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_e_smile.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> The talk on the mailing list got me thinking about forks too, a lot of great ideas on there for a cool fork.
EDIT//:
Holy crap I just watched this video :
[media]
Procedural clouds inside gas-giants! Procedural asteroid fields/Ring systems!... I think David has it covered <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//wink3.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />
No, thanks for pointing to that. I didn't realise they were this far along.
I like the multiplayer aspect, but the combat itself while I realise it's very much a WIP, it worries me how little the ships respect inertia.
According to the kickstarter faq that's due to the fly-by-wire system, so it must be using some excessively powerful maneuvering thrusters to counter the inertia <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_e_smile.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
The guy sure knows his stuff and great ideas and i'm sure is a wonderful guy, but please, someone get him away from sales/marketing... the guy doesn't have a clue!
Imagine the same content being sold by Ballimer! He'd be throwing chairs, jumping around like a monkey, and everyone would get excited about it!!!
Well its good to see people talking about it.
And amongst the 16000 comments on the kickstarter page there is a lot of people talking about Pioneer, how people gave up on it but others are urging them back so I would think Pioneer traffic would be increasing correspondingly.
For the record Elite IV does look a continuation of FFE, not the original elite. Its newtonian disguised with, as said above, big arse thrusters.
Everything will be seamless, it'll be mulitplayer and or single player or a combination (you and your mates only). there will be scripted missions (big things happening) and sort of 'standard' missions wher you might find a cripled ship under attack or a derelict ship that still has some cargo inside you can scavenge, only to find its a trap by pirates.
There is a lot of negative talk abut the way the kickstarter has been managed. I wouldn't have thought that would matter to the 'fans' but just because it doesn't look like Star Citizen does that make it any less professional? or just a different way of doing things.
Anyway thanks for those that have supported. Keep it up!

yeah me too. When Frontier came out I had an Amiga 2000 and it was just the single most amazing thing I'd ever seen watching that intro to it.. and then just the game... It is still my fave game to play - given a whole new lease of life thanks to iDOS.
In the FAQ it says that the flight will be newtonian, I just think he'll take the best bits of all of them.. it might be a tad easier to dog-fight, but then all that wasted work they did on The Outsider... that will be fed back into this project I feel.
I think it matters a great deal how the whole kickstarter is managed. First impression anyone?
After all, he is selling us the idea of an new Elite, and we would like to see this idea translated.
Simply expecting the die-hard-fans or the nostalgia to do 'it' is almost an half-arsed attempt.
The people pledge more than the money...they get involved.
And they wan't to see that involvement to show on the developers side too!

Gas-giant clouds have been on my todo list for a while already, now they're in my issues list directly because of this <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//wink3.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />
Big lumpy asteroid rings aren't realistic but they're easily doable.
When you've got big lumps they tend to form bigger lumps relatively quickly and then we call them moons!
Would people want them as an option though?
Ring systems? As in Orbitals? Got that on a branch already! Also issue #2 on my todo list! <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_e_biggrin.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />
<chortles> Have you seen this vid too?
Does anyone feel that the Elite control system is a bit lacking?
Why does it only _seem_ to allow pitch+roll? When yaw+pitch would be a much quicker route to most direction changes?
I'm not saying the roll should be removed but that it should be yaw+pitch+roll ... like in Pioneer <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_e_biggrin.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />
Randomly spawned water "cargo" to scoop in Jovian rings would be nice... and maybe the odd nano-moon within the rings to mine...
My vote would be to get Jovian Atmosphere's (and Stellar Coronas!) working before bothering with the rings.
Procedural debris fields make sense for things like Lagrange Points. I know the engine can't technically do n-body physics but how plausible would it be to just hack in the L1 through L5 points as pseudo-singularities?
Bounty Hunting in the Earth-Luna L5 HazMat Dump... <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_e_biggrin.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />
My vote would be to get Jovian Atmosphere's (and Stellar Coronas!) working before bothering with the rings.
It's not a matter of determining priorities for things like that. I can't do a thing about it, not brainy enough!
A mere lumpy bumpy gas giant ring with rocks and/or ice is within range of a lot more coders <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//wink3.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />
My first impression was that the exposure levels for the asteroids was set to high and the detail was blowing out to pure white and that they needed to fix that shiz.
I also thought that the I-novae tech demo did rings/procedural asteroids better and that this was the benchmark for procedural.
Pioneer works ok on my MacBook but its using the legacy renderer so I can't judge how pioneer is looking these days. Don't think ring systems are that detailed though ?
My first impression was "well this is early days, but you can have my pledge because you're Sir Dave fricken Brabben (as far as I'm concerned) .I've wished Elite IV would happen for a very long time"
