To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

s20dan & all crew...

Your varied backgrounds from ship to station are right and canny. Once I'm back at base and al ittle more settled I'll be able to pull up the more completed icons and work upon a background too!

best,

Jamie

Did anyone else decide they would have a go at adding an interface for a ship?

Its been set so that it loads up a graphic for the terminal based on the name of the ship.

IE data/icons/terminal/Eagle Long Range Fighter.png

Just need a few more screens to test it out now 🙂

We could change it to be set by station type, see what's best.

Here's the actual files used for the interface for anyone that wants to have a try at making one.

This goes underneath:

This goes over the top, however its lost its alpha settings now due to converting to .jpeg so its not transparant anymore:

I think the gui needs to properly support skinning (textured by individual tiled parts) before any "prettification" like this is worth it. As this is just two 1,280px × 715px images, it will only look "pixel perfect" on one resolution, for anything else it will be stretched/squashed. Think of the video memory efficiency as well 🙂

I hear what your saying but it does work. I tested what it looked like at 800x600, then 1280x800 then 2560x1600, so not only different res, but also different Aspect ratio. You would not be able to tell the difference as the interface scales perfectly. I was actually very surprised at that, as it was originally something I was purely doing for myself and for the resolution that I play at (2560x1600), but when tested it appeared to have identical quality at any resolution.

Believe me my first idea was as you suggested, different skins for different parts. But why do that when this works perfectly and is so damn simple? (other than memory considerations)

So simple in fact that to make one all you need is a screen shot which you can trace over.

Thats how FFE did it anyway, nice and simple.

Anway I have played with and without the interface changes, and now I miss those changes when they aren't there, as I feel they actually improve my experience within the game.

But each unto their own I suppose 🙂

As for memory, your correct it does use a fair bit more than having seperate smaller images, however it is only loaded when docked at a station or planet, so there are no other ships loaded, it would probably be no more intensive than following close to another ship around a station or planet.

For some reason whenever anyone embeds jpg images into these posts they get totally corrupted one my PCs. Doesn't matter what browser I use. Would be nice to see what all the fuss is actually about :/

I'd like there to be a reskin of the Frontier ship interface we currently use. It's evocative certainly but we seem to have some really talented artists around and it'd great to have other choices.

The screens are very old and probably the source files have been missing.

I remember there where some good looking menu backtrounds (for docking and shipping interface) that should replace the plain blue background that is actually ingame.
