To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

Planet Detail

Hi, I have seen videos of builds as far back as alpha 12 with super high planet fractile detail with mountains and everything. But when i put all my settings to max at 1280x1024 on alpha 20 all the planets look like flat surfaces with solid colors? I don't know whats wrong do i have to change some settings somewhere? I have a Gforce Gtx 260, it should be able to get way more detail than what im seeing now. its pretty much less detail than elite FFE when i get really close to the ground.

Terrain generation is entirely CPU based so it takes a LOOOOONG time to create it all - this has been the focus of some recent efforts by several people.

What CPU do you have? If it's an older single core then you could be waiting for several minutes at least. Pioneer really only uses upto 2 cores of any CPU though at the moment but that 2nd core really does help!

Like the man says, we need some more information 🙂

Just put everything on medium and go from there. No need to ramp up the detail until you actually know your computer can handle it. Your graphics card is pretty good, but with the current terrain it makes next to no difference at all what one you have.

Oh i thought that would be processed by the GPU,

My cpu is Intel Quad Core Q6600 2.4ghz

I have 8 gigs ram also.

Ill try putting the detail back to like medium again and just sit on a planet till i see something.

From kinda high up i can see craters on some planets, but like i said i don't really see anything when i land, and Ive seen vids where planets have canyons and nice looking mountains.

Setting the detail to a little lower worked, very very high is just extreme i guess.

I have a question though, I haven't played Elite that much i just found out about it like 4 years ago and i played it a tiny bit, but i remeber being able to see the sun in each system even when really far away from it. In this game I've noticed you cant see the sun unless you're close to it, is there some way to turn something on where you can at least see a tiny light from far away to know thats the sun?

My cpu is a pentium 4 dual core 3.00ghz and only 512mb ram, also I just have an integrated Intel 82915G/GV/910GL very low end video adaptor.

I have everything on low and it only uses about 50% cpu, I'm sure it would run fine on medium. I'm happy though it looks good as you can see in the screenshot sitting on Phobos orbiting Mars, think it's a great view 🙂

As I've said before somewhere on this forum, "very very high" is just giving Pioneer permission to bring your machine to its knees. It will, too.

Well its good for future proofing the game imo, and it doesn't lag my game, it just doesn't load the details, i might set it to very high record a video and go afk and see how long it took haha.

I would expect at the very least you should see a reasonably bright star in the distance, but I'm not sure if you actually can in Pioneer.

It is drawn, but it can be hard to see. A typical Sol-sized stars starts becoming invisible against the back at only a few AU. If you have labels on you can still find its position, but its hard to see. This is something we need to adjust.

Hey is there like a easy mode setting somewhere? I've tried like 10 missions and failed them all because i ran out of time, I don't remember elite being this hard. I don't want to Ctrl-m and cheat either.

There is no difficulty level in Pioneer. If the delivery missions are too difficult for you, try some other means of earning money, and save up for a faster ship.

cj31387 Remove from Eagle all weapons and change Hiperdrive Class 1 to Class 2. The hyperspace speed change is impressive.

That worked great thanks!

Also, is there a good way of organizing your saves so you know which was your last save? i have like 4 saves and forget which was my last one, or should i just stick with 2?

At this point all you can is number them as part of the file name.

Hopefully at some point the save/load dialogs will be improved to include such things as date, time, location, ship, money, etc.

Ok, seems like passenger missions are very unprofitable for me right now, is there any way to figure out which systems have parcel delivery missions easily?

My method is to name the saves as follows;

alpha # year-month-day hour;min;sec brief description

for example, a21 3200-01-02 17;24;13 Mars High

When I save I click on my last save and update the info.

The only annoying thing about this game is not being able to speed up docking, I really hate watching the slow space station docking animation over and over. I figured out Ctrl-click on the speed when your over a planet forces it into time speed up, but it doesn't work for docking to a space station. Or do i just not know of a certain setting or button?

I seem to remember someone saying that was going to be looked at.
