To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

A thought on that shiny Mars thing. I haven't had the privilege of actually being able to see a planet from orbit, but it seems reasonable to assume that some terrains and lighting conditions would cause reflections into your eyes. In effect, some parts of a planet would probably appear shiny.

The sea certainly does. NASA have video.

Very true Marcel, @ Brian not only the sea but also flat areas of land such as rock or desert, in certain lighting and atmospheric conditions they can appear to reflect light although the angle which you view them at has some bearing on that too.

Hey, I am a newcomer to this site and saw that people were posting Pioneer screens, so here are some of my own.

Hey Gravitus

Welcome to the SSC and a great first post there 🙂

Especially like that second photo, spooky 😯 Now there is a solar system screaming out for a mission to be made involving it. What a shame no one can hear you scream in space though 😉

It's the first time I've seen them work properly!

Thanks to all for the friendly compliments. I am not sure how many people are having rendering problems, but hopefully they will be fixed soon. When I am just roaming the galaxy I Have the graphics setting on low to medium, otherwise the game is way to slow. But whenever I want to take a screen I position my ship where I want it pause the game and turn the graphics setting to very very high, then wait for it to render. Thank you all again for your compliments.

there really needs to be a new employment type - astro photographer 😉

i can spend ages just getting the right shot - so much for killing, mining, smuggling, trading, pirating .... this is the life for me

the beauty of the Pioneer universe ................ 😉

now where did i put that wide angle lens .....

happy landings

Rob

now that isn't a bad idea, having a astro photographer job, maybe, it could have some requirements, time limit, distance from target, or location, / time of day, and if its a good photo, you can get a fair bit for them,

not a bad idea really

I agree matthew, in fact that idea could be taken even further. Remember the photo recon missions in Frontier and FFE? How about (optionally) linking a military cameras icon on the dash to also take real screen shots?

yes I remember them, you had to be pretty close and not raise any alarms, better be in a small fast ship,

so this idea could be added for recon missions, taking photos of the following, partial constructed space stations, new ships designs, planets for new civilisations (with planet readings,) enemy fleets preparing to jump, (time limited so you can if you have a fast ship, get in take a few photos, get out and the alarm can be sounded and the enemy fleet could be countered, otherwise the system could be attacked and taken over (as it would be good if systems could change hands once in a while)

you know, for military missions, once you are high enough, the military of your chosen faction could lone you a special kind of ship, cloaked (cloak non removable ) for more high risk photos like the above, decreasing your chances of been found, or you are given a cloak that gets fitted to your ship (again none removable until the mission ends (success of fail) then if fail, the cloak short circuits so stop it been used for other purposes) so stopping it from been an over powered item

I think astro photography type missions could be expended to cover a lot of areas, as it got pretty boring after a while in frontier, but in pioneer it could be pretty fun, and high risk with decent rewards

added it in the issue tracker

https://github.com/pioneerspacesim/pioneer/issues/541 as a feature request

but yeah, I think this should be added in the game at some point, lets hope it happens 😎

As I wrote on the issue, it'll have to wait until we have custom equipment and key bindings available to Lua. Once that's done, a Lua script can make a camera, and assign a key to make it take a picture. The mission itself would be very similar to an assassination mission, except that you get near a target and press the camera key instead of shooting somebody. It shouldn't be difficult, once the necessary features are done.

that is good to hear, the time frame doesn't bother me, but thought this should be added to the tracker as an feature request

thanks for the reply and feedback on this Brianetta

edit

a few new screenshots from me, in the Delta Pavonis system, , but I probably add more pics once I also found a good place to take them

pioneer1.jpg

pioneer3.jpg

more soon

edit

got a new screenshot, game of Pool with planets anyone?

anyone give the name of the classic BBC scifi that did do just that 😀

anyway the pic

pioneer4.jpg

not a bad image, going to scot around for a few more good places, and that image took a bit of time to get right as well

Well, I remember Ford Prefect telling a story about a planet that suffered a worse fate than Earth. I can't remember the name of the place, but it got caught up in an inter-galactic game of ball billiards and got potted straight into a black hole, killing billions of people.

Only scored 20 points too. 🙄

I think Red Dwarf also did a story about potting planets too, but I am not sure <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_e_confused.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':?' /> And nice work again s2odan <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//wink3.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

you win the prize, that is the series I was thinking of, and to prove it

"white Hole" was the episode name

now it would be cool if you could do something similar in pioneer 😀
