To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

What if... Pioneer in Space Engine

Good day to you all,

What if the Pioneer open source game was made in Space Engine...?

Just a brianfart and would like to know what others would think about it.

Basically: the universe + graphics are already in Space Engine; the basic gameplay is already in Pioneer.

Personally I would really like to see this hybrid happen because:

1) Spaceships are controlled via Newtonian physics (except the unproven 'hyperdrive')

2) Spaceships are quite realistic in design

3) Spaceships can be controlled through commands and manual control

4) Space Engine graphics are gorgeous (!) (I'm actually freaked out by travelling to close to a star/black hole (good thing))

A lot of options are possible but this hybrid (and maybe even more) are possible before I die of old age! Exploration would actuallty mean exploring the surface. Land on the surface to take a sample and scan it.

Oculus Rift/HTC Vive + this kind of spacegame = instant buy (= real life lost :P)

Let me hear your opinions/ideas/brainstorms/fantasies because who knows what'll happen....

P.S.: Don't know what pioneer is? Check this link: pioneerspacesim.net

P.P.S.: Definetly keep Space Engine music included when this magic happens

You are posting in the Pioneer forum so I am pretty sure everyone here knows what Pioneer is.

As to the mashup. The code for Pioneer is GPL-3 licensed so Space Engine might have to open source it's code it if took any of Pioneers, a full list of our licenses is available, and that might not be what the author of SpaceEngine wants.

Since SpaceEngine doesn't seem to have it's code available we can't put our code into it. Maybe if it has a plugin system them someone could use Pioneers codebase to add Pioneers gameplay too SpaceEngine but I don't think anyone on the Pioneer team is interested in doing that.

SpaceEngine is great, it looks truly amazing and I wish we had time and more talented people to make Pioneer look that good.

Speaking for myself I'm not interested in using the SpaceEngine technology though because I do this so that I can learn how to create those visuals myself. If I just use someone else's engine to do it then I miss out on that learning.

Also if you're interested I do have a year-old Oculus Rift DK1 branch of the code and recorded a video of it.

That was done using the original DK1 Rift prototype and the text was completely illegible, I do have the DK2 now though and the final version is due to pre-order soon(ish) so perhaps I should get it working again.

Yes, redirecting someone to the same website as the post is really stupid of me >.<

This post came up in my mind when I was really tired and I meant no offence with my stupidity. I like this game when I found out and wish you manny great insights ahead!

I had no clue actually what would be required to even try to get something like this to another engine and how it all works.

When I have aquired an Oculus Rift myself I definetly will try it out. About that: the final version is soon to be released off course but also its rival; the HTC Vive.

I do not know yet which one will be the better one and which one I will buy and because I have no understanding of programming, will there be support for both of them or is that way to complicated because of different implementations?

Don't worry there's no stupidity in asking only in staying quiet 🙂

I would like to support both, of course that means buying both... I'm certainly going to buy one of them and have been saying all my pennies. At the moment I think I will be buying the Oculus Rift, and the Oculus Touch controllers (when they launch) so it will support that one day.

The VR support I wrote was very experimental but it would be nice to get it into the game. Of course all this has problems in that several systems don't work with it at all. The SystemView, GalaxyView and SectorViews are all broken and would need writing in new ways.

It's a case of wait and see what they release and how much it all costs at the moment.

Good luck with the implementation. I'll be looking forward to it!

If it does not work, no worries. I'm having loads of fun without it already
