To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

Elite : Reclamation ... a potential novel.

Folks, by now I'm sure you know all about the Elite:Dangerous Kickstarter.

As some of you will be aware, I wrote a series of fan-fiction novellas for the open-source ‘Oolite’, which are set in (almost) the same universe. The original Elite came with a Novella, and I felt Oolite needed one too.

The Elite:Dangerous project has a “Writers’ Pack” - there’s the opportunity to write a story set in the Elite:Dangerous Universe, publish it and even have parts of the game rearranged to suit the events of the story.

Trouble is, it requires a pledge of £4,500. Believe it or not, I don’t have that kind of cash just lying around.

Thus I’m resorting to my own kickstarter, hoping to raise the money. It’s got to be raised prior to the 5th of January 2013.

There’s a bunch of stuff on that page, a video (homage to the various Elite games, including Pioneer and Oolite), my rational for what I’m doing and some of my other work. Please let me know what you think.

This is clearly a bit of a mission - but I don’t think it’s impossible, so far the total is £1,900 and that's after just 2 days.

More than 100,000 people have downloaded my Oolite Saga novellas over the last 6 years. I’m a published author, I know what’s involved here and it’s definitely doable. You can trust me to deliver.

Everyone who pledges £5 or more will get an ebook copy of the new story. Stretch goals include professional cover design, editing, type-setting and a paperback production run.

So if you’ve enjoyed the Oolite Saga and want more, here’s your chance. Help me raise the money and bring an official Elite novel to life. The working title is “Elite : Reclamation”

I'd love to do this, but I need help. Please check out my kickstarter and see what you think > http://www.kickstart...an-for-the-fans

Many thanks,

Drew.

ps. I guess this is pretty much spamming. If this is considered completely out of order, please delete! I hope it will genuinely interest some folks. Peace.

Nice idea Drew, seen it mentioned on the Elite Kickstart comments did not click that you had done the Oolite novels.

So, what amount do I have to pledge to get the printed version of the book (assuming you reach the stretch goal for it)?

Your Kickstarter page is well done and I will pledge no matter what, but I'd like to have the printed version if possible and I don't want to pay twice.

Could you clear things up regarding this matter? This was the only question left after reading your page.

Thank you!

@True - I'll be pushing out an update today on this very matter. A print run of a novel length book comes to about £2,500, if I can keep costs in check. The stretch goal will be aimed around this. I'm hoping I can rely on the community for proof-reading and some editing (there is such a wealth of knowledge on Elite in the fan community that any plot inconsistencies should be easily nailed.)

Stay tuned and thanks for the support.

We hit £2,000 today - 44% funded in 3 days!

Cheers,

Drew.

What about a 20-25£ tier offering the ebook & the printed novel regardless if the 7,500£ stretch goal is reached. Backers will then get the print-on-demand edition shipped by Amazon!?

Is that a possibility?

Just came to my mind, someone who has no clue about publishing. If that idea would mean you would have to sell your soul to Amazon, just forget what I wrote here. <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//wink3.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

And another thought. IF Elite won't make it, but your Kickstarter will, what are the options then?

Amazon is a dirty word to a lot of writers (and to people in the publishing industry, I believe).

I hope Mr.Wagner reaches his goal. I have enjoyed his Dark Wheel series greatly.

Thanks for all the support folks - we are almost there! Less than £600 required to get us to the basic goal! Unbelievable. There is a new pledge level for a printed book at present.

Right on, commanders!

Cheers,

Drew.

Well folks,

Thanks to pledgers from this very board and many other Elite fans, my Kickstarted book became a reality. Elite Reclamation is now available from Amazon or my publisher Fantastic Books.

Paperback and hardback (and audiobook version read by none other than Toby Longworth!) to follow...

Thanks for all the support.
