To all SSC Station occupants
Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.
Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

Ok, based on that last design I made 2 more variations so that they could be used for some sort of small industrial faction based on the outskirts of a system inside a brown gas nebula 🙂

Here are a few variations for a low poly battlecruiser:

Like the colour scheme on the first one but your panel lines are too big they are making the ship look small.
Cheers for the heads up mate, I'll definitely keep this in mind when I'll be using this pattern again.
Sweet!!
WOW!
I wish I could design things like that on the pc.
This is truly amazing work!
I'm sure you're aware of this already, but why wouldn't you submit these to RSI?
Aren't they having a next mothership contest or something like that?
I haven't seen one ship on your page I wouldn't wanna fly.
Great work!
Cheers mate. *hands out a cold beer*
Unfortunately the ships they're expecting to create in this contest at RSI are a bit above what I can do by myself, especially considering they're looking for teams and people who are more than familiar with the CryEngine, which I'm not. But I am looking forward to see what cool concepts these guys will come with during the challenge, so best of luck to them.
let's be honest here...
the ships they are offering are ok...I bought a few
(please don't tell my wife)
we're all obviously sci-fi freaks or we wouldn't be here.
at one time, those guys were hungry.
hungry, just startin out in the biz sci-fi freaks themselves.
but now they're happy and settled in their careers.
and they lost that hungry.
maybe it's just me, but they seem to just churn out the typical assembly line "space-ship"
me thinks you'd be dangerous with some CryEngine
put it this way, they need a team to pump out that stuff... ur doing THIS by yourself
All true mate but take into consideration that the reason those ships might seem as out of a typical assembly line is because they're made that way, so they appeal to a much wider audience of gamers, if not most of them. Thus it's not that the artists lost their touch, because trust me, they can come up with insane designs if given a free hand, it's just that they're making what the market is asking for.
It's easier to draw in a gamer if you present him a ship design that he's somewhat familiar with, than if you were to go with a more "extreme" approach and come up with a design that's more radical and something that only its mother could love and maybe a few other hardcore fans. Indeed their ships seem a bit common in style but the level of detail they're putting in them is just ... wow, so that more than makes up for it and now not only will they draw in the casual players community but also the hardcore ones, because of all the detailing they're putting in, it's a win-win situation and they know it, which is why they're doing it.
As for the challenge itself, here are some of the designs some people in their community have come up with, even before the challenge, so think what they may come up with now 🙂

Compared to what I'm doing, this seems light years away and just imagine the kind of artists this contest will draw. At a quick glance I saw artists who worked on movies such as the new Star Trek and some other Hollywood stuff. What are your odds against that 🙂
I have noticed that I am somewhat good at coming up with the basic "low poly" kind of shapes when it comes to spaceships but as soon as the detailing process begins I hit a wall. I'm talking here about actual cool identifiable details, Star Citizen type, not blocking out low poly shapes that you have to assume what they might be when you look at them. It's not that i can't make them, 3D wise, it is that I can't imagine them myself. So, unless I have by my side at all times a concept artist to provide me with really good and detailed designs, all I'm gonna come up with is a basic hull with some shapes on it and call it a spaceship, like I usually do 🙂
So, lack of imagination when it comes to details, that's my achilles heel and that is why this particular contest is out my reach, without a doubt.
... back to our regular schedule.
Hey guys.
I'd really appreciate if you could help me out with a short background story for this model I'm working on. It is a battleship based on the latest XI capital ship concept art from RSI and I will also be texturing it but after I finish some of my other work.
If you feel like helping me out with the story, please feel free to incorporate whatever elements you wish, such as where it was built, who is using it and how, etc. 🙂
