To all SSC Station occupants
Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.
Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

All the talk abour the Amiga I thought I would show a couple of my old 3d pic and new one, well from about a year ago.
IIRC this was one of my first complete 3d pic in C4D around about 1996 or 1997,as it was the first version of the
C4D you could not add lights to the model,so I tried doing the engine flare in a paint prog.
Same model but in a later version of C4D where you could add lights
This one was done in Tornado 3D a round about 1999/2000 with some post effects in Image fx
After about a ten year gap and only when FFE3D showed up I started playing around with Blender last year and as you can the fanboy fav,the cobra mk111 and as han solo said "I've made some Modifications"
Thanks Farcodev.
I got a couple of ideas I want to do but first I will have to relearn how to use Blender 😳 ,I should have also mentioned that the little headless guy in the Cobra pic was by some one on Blender nation, apologies but I can't remember who did it now. 😳
I love the look of the old renders there, lots of atmosphere. The third one in particular is excellent, you very rarely see shots like that due to the amount of work involved. Beautiful stuff.
i knew it all the time pinback, you got skill 😮
but i didn't knew you was doing models since such a long time, compared to that i'm a nube 🙄
i can't await your first release for Pioneer or FFED3D. maybe we should open a special blender thread here for sci-fi related models. to me it's the most forwarding program, a little hard to manage, but offers a lot.
i had MAX installed for several month's but i must say not only because of illegality (i haven't so much money, and i don't understand why at all, i guess even if you start to do a little private business, it would completely over exceed your budget, and only Autodesk will have it's profit from it, while you and your small business will die because of such cost's, industry and big company's might not mind about a few 10k each year, but in the end the customer will have to pay that) i would prefere Blender at least.
no 3d but general thought
further even government's start to think different because of the yearly licence costs for software and change to linux and other open source based software to do their daily business, at least we citicens take the profit of it and not MS or Adobe!
right? right!
it's our money they spend, and industry and other companies, even when they are powerful, should start to think that way, i guess a lot would change then, when they didn't get that fat no more, only because of the yearly fees that come in without a real consideration.
i.e. French government changed to linux since it exists in a stable form, with the advantage that they control their own release and have the possibility to fit it to their longings.
germany's "county" Baden-Württemberg followed short time later to that example. saving many 10000's of euro of yearly fees for licencing.
cool photo kenny,
Cheers Axeman and potsmoker66.
I have been Obsessed with ships landing for years, seeing the Nostromo landing in Alien has always been a fav, first
tried doing one on super 8mm back in the mid 80s and it something which I intend to return to one day when I get some time.
I'am back to being a nube again Potsmoke66 as I can't remmenber how to use Blender, but this time I'am going to crack how to do that damned uv unwrap.allready did one model for FFE3D the unfinished Cobra mk1 you should be able to find the download on the FFE3D English forum.
😯 WOW Pinback, I've just the now discovered this thread! You really need to get back to this work. Those Amiga renders were nicely done. It was not everyone who could use those old renderers to their full potential. Well done! 🙂
I once created a space animation using Imagine 4. I did the whole scene inside a large star mapped sphere. 😆
Took me weeks of work too, now laying on the platters of a long dead hard drive 😥
Cheers Geraldine I share you pain of the lost hard drive as the same thing happened to me, lost a lot pics, textures ect.
I have Imagine 3 never did work out how to use it and had to wait until Cinema 4D came out.
Funny you should mention the star field sphere as I remember that I converted one for Imagine into C4D then used the Babylon 5 tutorial that appeared in Amiga Shopper to create the nebula. Then went on to use it in an animation that took the poor old Amiga about 12 hours to render, luckily I still have it but have never been able to successfully convert it to the PC.
Definitely like to get back to doing some 3d it just a question of finding the time to do it now.
Oh yea, I remember waiting for ages (even with an 060 Cyberstorm) for the render to finish. I used Vista Pro alot too for landscapes, it used to generate "fractal music" while it was calculating a scene. I would leave it warbling away for hours on end! 😆
Ah,....they dont make programs like those anymore "sigh" 🙁 Well, yes they do, but they are nowhere near as cool to use. Did you ever submit any work to either Amiga Format or CU Amiga Pinback? I have a near full collection of those old magazine CDs
No never did, always ment to send some in just never got around to it although there are some pics on one of the Amiga Active CD including the ones above and my tribute to the Alien poster.
Cool looking ships. I like the Hammer head looking one.
That hammerhead one has a long history, it was inspired by the blockade runner from StarWars and has existed as various physical model over the years built from yogurt cartons a box , cassette tape box as well an interesting bit of plumbing I found for the engines. 😆
Use to have quit a lot of variations on the design just by moving the pods around.
Alien poster or Egglien in this case, never did get it to look like an egg. One day I will go back to it.
Cheers farcodev.
I really must have another go with blender as I have a couple of ideas which have been knocking around my head for ages that I want to do.
Trouble is I seem to the attention span of a gold fish at the moment.
Been having a fiddle with Blender again and come up with this character,
It's a cross between R2D2 and Robot Jaws for those that know who Robot Jaws is. 🙂
Been having a few problems with getting the arms attached to the body, been using the boolean which is probably not the best way to do it.
Still not happy with the look of the arms and hands just don’t look right.
The idea is that it’s a Customs Revenue and Excise Droid which would run around a starport checking cargo manifest, collecting taxes and having forms signed, not a popular droid with most captains. 😆
I was trying too get a sort of wild west bank or telegraph clerk look to it with the peak cap and some black armbands which will probably be done with the textures, if I ever get that far.
cool little bot, I've been trying to make a character lately and I haven't had any luck yet. I'm not a fan of boolean. It never works right for me. Cutting the faces into smaller pieces and welding things together works better for me but it take awhile. IHopefully you make it to the texture part of this model. I would love to see it all painted up.
I keep reading that you should never use the boolean tools but I like it for doing the more complex bits.
I ended up separating the shoulder joints from the arms, then reconnecting the arms back on to get around the problem of the boolean not doing what I thought it would do.
Not sure now if I should have left it all in parts for the uv unwrap.
Been having another go at the unwrap. There must be 1001 tutorials on Blenders unwrap tool all dealing with the bloody cube or monkey head, which I can now do in my sleep now. 😆
But when it comes to doing anything more complex there seems to very little on the subject.
Been trying to get a colour scheme together for it and been playing around with some basic material.
It would be great to see a few of these running around a starport repairing ships in Pioneer. Great model Pinback 😎
it might be cool or funny to put a gun holster on the bot and place tools in it. you could even add a old west bullet holder with bolts in it.
Have you tried to animate this Pinback? I could see this being a funny robot like Clap-Trap from borderlands 🙂
Funny you should mention the holster as I was going to give it a cattle prod which would have extended from the back of the hand to stun live cargo. That thinking led me on to suppose that on the more wilder starports they might be armed with a blaster, as no one likes a tax droid. 😆
Like the idea of a holster with tools in it, 😎 I have an idea for a mechanic droid which I will be doing after this one if I ever get it finished, so I may put some thing like that on it.
Long term I am thinking about an animation but for now it and the others are just for a picture I have on my mind.
Finally got the model unwrapped. 😀
Being doing a bit of texturing testing, not quite the look I want but I seem to be moving in the right direction. One thing I will have to do is rebuild the whole model at some point as it’s a bit on the low polygon side.
I like that worn paintwork effect Pinback and perhaps it's eye should be lit too 🙂
your paint job is off to a good start. If you what to add some more detail without raising your poly count. You could bake a higher poly model over this one. I also wouldn't mind trying to texture it myself. It looks like it would be a fun model to paint.
Good idea with the glow effect as it will add that spark of life to it, like to get that Hal 9000 look to the eye if I can. Had a go at it but it turned out a bit flat, will have to have a rethink about how to do that.
Being thinking about adding a bump map too it to add more details and have baked an AO map, although it did not seem to make a lot of difference when I added it to the bump channel. What I really need to do is combine the uv wire map with the texture map in order to see the edges of the different parts of the robot are. Then make a bump map form that.
It’s getting to be one dirty looking droid. 😆
I think it looks really cute Pinback, also the "wash me" on the back! 😆 😆
I have been toying with the idea of putting an L “learner†plate on the back. 😆
