Hi guys,

I'm a huge space game fan, have been playing them since Elite in 1984!   I have quite a collection but I'm getting rather bored and am on the hunt for a new game (well, it doesn't have to be new out)

Ideally I want something like a 1st person/cockpit game where mining is a viable option. (yes, I love mining)

I am a kickstarter for Elite Dangerous but I am giving that a break for a few months ...or longer.  I recently bought X:Rebirth in an Egosoft sale but oh dear, I don't really like the game and mining in that is quite awful (imo)

If you can suggest any space games with mining that would be superb!

Off hand three games spring to mind Miner war 2081 http://store.steampowered.com/app/223430/ this is the game Keen software did before Space Engineers and never finished.

ARM http://store.steampowered.com/app/344890/ and Astrox http://store.steampowered.com/app/414720/ both on Steams early access and may be finished one day.

Mining is one these activities which could be fleshed out more in space trading games, most of them just tend to have the player fire at an asteroid and tractor beam the goodies in.

Evochron series

X series (X3 for example, not X Rebirth)

Space Engineers

Starpoint Gemini 2 (1st-3rd person gameplay, but includes mining and more stuff)

Honestly I think there's more 3rd person, top-down games including mining out there.

I believe Eve has the most in-depth mining but I don't play online games so I maybe wrong.

Still think The Tomorrows War has one of the best mining missions where you had to find an asteroid with a rich seam using the scanner, then land on it and deploy a mining machine, just a pity the rest of the game is so bad.

Not really. EVE has a simple and boring mining + you get ganked often by idiots even in safe zones.

Thanks for that, I'll check them out!

You can see a bit more about the Tomorrow war in this thread http://spacesimcentral.com/ssc/topic/252-the-tomorrow-war/

Probably has the worst English voice acting ever seeing in a game. and their is no mining in the game as it's a Wing commander style game where you play the missions to progress through the game.

You might want to try the demo for Evochron Legacy from http://www.starwraith.com/evochronlegacy/index.htm

Its got mining and hundreds of other things to do online and off. It has easier navigating than Elite Dangerous but is somewhat less pretty. Don't be put off by the very small size of the download file. In the old days we called that efficient coding. EL is the latest in a series of Elite type space sim games from the one man operation: StarWraith Games.

Hi Paul,

it's rather difficult to name a space game that really focuses on mining. Of course, the most known titles like X-series, SPG2, Evochron Mercenary (or the newest Legacy) all include mining, but NOT as an extended activity.

The only 2 titles to fit this requirement would be Space Engineers, a space game centered on construction (but I don't know how mining asteroids or planets will play out).

Then, Miner Wars 2081 plays in a world where the solar system was destroyed, leaving a lot of fragmented bodies splitted all over the system. All objects are destroyable, the game has an interesting game engine in this aspect.

Be warned that this game requires HUGE computer system requirements, not explicitly mentioned at the release time, especially you need a really powerful grafics card. You can then set the video settings to maximum and the game will then really shine visually.

Greets,

XenonS
