To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

Star Citizen FPS Demo

Video of the FPS part of Star Citizen.

Looks like a pretty standard FPS although I just got to the part in the video where they were just about to demo the zero g effect when my connection packed up,  I will have a look later.

Looking pretty good.  Of course, I feel far less equipped to judge FPS than space-sims, having more experience in old arena shooters than anything else in that genre.

The only obvious complaint about what I see in this video is the rather oddball, twitchy character movement.  Also, (this is a minor thing) the HUD should not disappear so suddenly when looking down the sights, it should look continuous.

With this and the latest patches to Arena Commander they finally seem to be getting their act together.  I still haven't spent much time on AC, since I've been trying to wait for them to get farther along, but what I see looks pretty good.  The rotation rates still look a little high and twitchy (as in acceleration) to me.  Despite how great Elite is, the cartoonish flight model will prevent me from ever feeling like I'm flying a spaceship, so I can't wait to see what SC can do once they go to double precision so we can get larger environments with greater top speed.  Ah... the 15 year wait since IWar2...

Beat me to posting this one Pinback 🙂

But this is looking pretty darn good and I am not playing SC for a FPS experience, but it definitely adds a great element to the space game where you can stretch your legs and take out some enemies on a station or ship. Why blow everything up when you can go aboard and take it by force... or least try too. Will be fun to see how this is tweaked and implemented throughout the game and I hope Squadron 42 gets some of this action as well.

This was a 4-on-4 match that I could see and would be interested if you can have your crew (maybe bots) with you and how will they respond or are you only going to have humans when doing a FPS engagement?

I don't dig any of the graphics or gameplay yet because this is still very alpha... what I do wonder is if I am going to melt my PC trying to play the game at full rez if I will be even able to do that 🙂 Hehe. I haven't played any SC except a few mins in the hanger and out in that mission, I have been waiting for the gfx improvements and such because my A10-7850k w/ R7 250 is struggling with he hanger sometimes. I might have to buy a new gfx card before this thing releases.

After watching that, I wouldn't mind a 'Shattered Horizon' like mod just for some zero-g combat.  I loved that game and wished it had more players.

Seen the last part and the zero g bit which looks a lot more interesting although I did not notice if firing the guns was pushing the player back as you would expect in zero g, maybe they had some sort of jet pack on?.

One interesting thing I seen mentioned is how are they going to handle the player death as they have said it will have consequences and I think they have ruled out re spawn points so are they going for something like Hamilton Commonwealth saga where if you are killed your are instantly transported to clone body? and would you have to restart the mission from the start again.

Talk about Star Citizen hype, have a look at this vid from the developers of the FPS module

I think these guys could give Derek Smart lessons in hype :haha: and what was they last FPS they played "QUAKE".

As far as I know, you in no way are forced to participate in any FPS parts.

I would have to agree with that, yeah having a FPS element to the game is nice but I hope it stays an optional component where you can get along in the game just fine without doing FPS missions. Like you should be given the option to automating the boarding or take over of a station with NPC marines/pirates whatever or go on the mission with them or with other friends. So as long as we are not forced to do it I will be happy.

As someone else said, it does annoy me that they're spending time and money on this when they should be focusing on the core space-sim gameplay; but I'll cut them some slack as long as they actually deliver a finished product at some point! I have no interest whatsoever in a first-person shooter really.
