To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

Evochron Legends Preview

Hey Everyone

StarWraith 3D Games have released a preview video of their upcoming release 'Evochron Legends'. Here is a brief snippet of what the game is about:

Quote:

It is a first person 3D space combat, trader, and mercenary simulation designed for 'lone-wolf' survival gameplay. You can make diverse buying, fighting, and travelling decisions in a large universe without the hesitation of turn-based gameplay or the reduced immersion of an overhead/outside view. You are literally in the action with a consistent first person viewpoint and can make virtually all gameplay decisions directly from the cockpit.

The main goal of the game's design is to provide the only freeform space-sim that lets you buy, trade, negotiate, bribe, spy, race, transport, mine, explore, recruit, design your ship, and protect in an open, seamless universe (without loading screens or sudden environment flipping) also without system 'walls', 'rooms', or required jump/warp gates. Freedom, interaction, and gameplay choices are the priorities of the game's design. Fly where you want, when you want, and complete a wide variety of activities to advance in the game and make your fortune.

When can you expect the game?

The forums are saying in February 2009 so you are not going to have to wait long for this one.

What I like most about StarWraith Games is that their staff releases frequent updates to keep on improving there released games. You always have to admire that type of support.

Here is some of the features that are going to be rolled into this release of Evochron Legends:

Quote:

- Direct Ship-to-Ship trading in addition to stations and planet cities

- Player controlled seamless planetary descents with city landings, plants, water, and weather effects

- Atmosphere effects (drag, lift, descent burn/glow, maneuvering limitations, etc)

- Diverse gameplay objectives including buying, trading, negotiating, bribing, spying, escorting, racing, transporting, mining, exploring, cleaning equipment, clearing asteroids, recruiting, protecting, and designing your ship.

- Constructor stations that take materials and build valuable items

- Unified single player and multiplayer architecture (keep what you earn in both modes)

- Mouse, Keyboard, AND Joystick/Gamepad control options

- Real-time gameplay docking and trading

- Unrestricted, open space jump drive system travel

- Realistic Newtonian physics

- Hiring and managing specialized crew members

- 3D cockpit with functional displays and readout text rendered as part of the 3D scene, not merely a 2D layer of text and pasted images

- Fuel resource management

- Dynamic changing economy

- Customize HUD, cockpit, and ship/item names

- Per ship reputations with optional bribing

- Realistic revolving inventory availability

- Radar (with 3D spherical direction indication)

- Target direction tracking display (with optional multiple target tracking)

- In-cockpit inventory and trade management

- Directional shielding with augment control

- Auto-repair ship upgrade devices

- Stealth/cloaking devices

Since release, the game has rapidly undergone a number of development iterations based on player feedback and now supports key features like this..

- Players can now scroll the nav map sector by sector while zoomed in using new arrow buttons.

- Support for multiple control devices added (up to 10 separate devices are supported).

- You can now disable automatic inventory console activation when docking.

- Smoother movement for left/right panning view control.

- Control of player proximity added to server program.

- Ability to link to multiple clan/squad groups added.

- Planet rings are now rendered with higher quality.

- Background star detail and variety improved.

- Docking lights added to warp gates.

- Multiplayer performance improved.

- Patrol waypoint limits increased.

- Faster loading sequence.

- Minor bug fixes.

Note: When you update to this build, you will likely need to reconfigure your control device using the new system.

An update version of the server program is also available for download.

The developer, Vice, also gave an interview on the game for Rock, Paper, Shotgun recently

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2009/03/11/interview-starwraith-on-evochron-legends/

I wrote a player perspective review of the game:

For any budding pilot, the demo is well worth a look.

Hey there spelk, welcome to SSC.

Thanks for both the articles. I notice you cover a lot of space sims in your blog, nice 🙂 I will add your blog site to the links area and feel free to write some reviews here if you have the time.

I am going to have to pickup Evochron Legends the recent patches look good. But with JGE and X3TC2.0 coming will I have the money to play them all 🙂 Only good thing about EL is that the Dev supports his games and hey it's only $25-30.

New EL build is out today!

http://www.starwraith.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=4529

Quote:

Test build 1.078 ready for download...

Build 1.078 is ready for download. This build adds the following:

- New 'War Zone' added to upper Sierra solar system.

- Race course boxes for ship-vs-ship races doubled in size.

- Message text better highlighted and moved for improved legibility.

- Positioning options added to cusomizing kit for message text system.

- Support for rear and above camera views added when TrackIR is enabled.

- Support for multiple texture images added for background nebulae option.

- New reward to discover at the end of the 'Arvoch Artifact' beacon quest.

- Support for using custom cockpits for each ship frame type added.

- 'Cinematic' style shaky camera view option added (default Alt-\).

- Wider range of movement available for TrackIR.

Note: due to changes in the game's universe data file, this is a required update for multiplayer. The server list has been cleared of older versions to prevent universe data file mismatches. As server operators update their copy of the server program and relist their sessions, the servers will re-appear on the list.

For server operators: Before installing, make sure to backup your original text2.dat file with any settings may have saved in that file. After installation, copy over the lines you have edited in that file, but do not directly over-write the file as there are new options that the server program needs to have access to. So just transfer the custom lines you may have entered into that file and adjust the new ones for any settings you want to apply.

Once the build proves solid, an official update should become available soon.

I find that I always have a bit of problem with the Evochron games in that I simpley don't know which

game is which?.the last one I tried was Renegades,so is Legends a sequel to that game or is it a new

game and if it's a new game what's the difference between them?.

Legends is a sequel to the Renegades game.

From:

http://starwraith3dgames.home.att.net/e ... ds/faq.htm

Quote:

How is Evochron Legends different from previous Evochron games?

- Evochron Legends adds many player requested features and changes. I've been able to implement most of the features I've had on my to-do list, some of which have been on the list for several years and weren't feasible under the older game's design. Here is a list of some of the changes and new features found in Legends compared to the older games:

- New contract options including passenger transport, capital ship escort, military war zone missions, multiple waypoint patrols, and planet atmosphere combat.

- Improved planetary descent effects, terrain (including plants), and cities.

- All planetary cities can now be docked with.

- High detail space stations with shape specific gravity repelling collision system.

- New constructor stations that can take raw materials for constructing components and items.

- Optional military role with new missions and dedicated ranking system.

- New objective based beacon quest following the path of Michael Gerret in his search for answers to what happened to his brother and the mystery of the Vonari device from Arvoch Conflict.

- Shipyard template system that lets you save your ship designs for rebuilding later.

- Hangars you can rent to store ships and valuable cargo.

- Dockable Alliance military carriers.

- New military ships available to own and fly.

- Multiplayer capacity increased (for both human players and AI controlled ships).

- New energy pod generators and receivers which can be used to set up 'capture the flag' scenarios in multiplayer and can be used to acquire free fuel.

- 'War Zones' where large military battles take place and the player can join in a war against the Vonari.

- Vonari interceptor and bomber class spacecraft to battle against in addition to the original fighters.

- New weapons and equipment like the Lynx, Rage and Cyclone missiles, proximity mines, probes, and new stealth technology that can be installed as equipment and used repeatedly.

- Updated training system with selectable stages available in the main menu.

- New materials for harvesting and mining including oxygen, plant cells (biological material), water, gold, silver, and armor. - High energy nebulae that prevent jump drives from engaging, giving players PvP zones that prevent quick escape.

- New high detail 3D cockpit with revised HUD, displays, and indicators.

- Updated navigaton map with color coded icons, larger text (with shadows), and much greater range.

- Painting options added for civilian ships.

- New capital ships including Cruisers, Battleships, Command Ships, and Destroyers which also join in war zone battles, including the use of beam weapons.

- Inbound missile direction and range indicators.

- Improved AI with a wider variety of difficulty. AI ships also follow more structured traffic patterns.

- Additional background radio chatter near populated areas to help give the game's universe a more 'living' feel.

- Many more gameplay, graphics, and sound improvements.

The thing with the Evochron series and StarWraith stuff in general, is that its an evolution of a game, that has seen a number of engine rewrites and a lot of user requested stuff to make it better.

The Arvoch Conflict game isn't a freeform game at all, its a mission based combat game.

I bought this - it's awesome. I haven't gone through all the games on this site (by the way, fantastic site, what a godsend), but Evochron Legend is by far the best spacesim I played in ages. Last time I got so excited about a game it was with Frontier, but the bugs really killed that one.

Highly recommended.

Welcome to SSC Cigaro and glad you like the site it is still somewhat new and I do my best to keep up to date on the latest space sim/rts/action based games coming. I have played the Legends demo and wish I had more time to dedicate to a game but from what I have played it is a solid game and would recommend it to everyone and its amazing the quality of the game in such a small package (50-75mb download) 🙂 Help spread the word about SSC everyone....

Its also being constantly developed according to the StarWraith's community suggestions. By that I mean its evolving into a bigger and better game, with the developer cherry picking his players ideas along with his own vision. I'm sure you'll see the game go from strength to strength, and there seems to be a very healthy modding and online group. The dev and certain community members run storied events, and odd ships show up in far away sectors, with a faction war on the go, on various servers. Aside from the games acheivements in terms of gameplay and performance, it's blossoming in terms of new features showing up and it serves both a single player experience and a more complex multiplayer experience if you want it.

@Darkone, wherever I can, I mention SSC as a one stop place for your space sim needs.. space simmers everywhere needed a coherant community, where new games can be showcased and debated, and hopefully this place will just grow as more and more simmers come here.

Thanks Spelk. I'm trying to make this into a hub where everyone can hopefully find that new game or discuss what they are playing. I know SSC is only 4 months old so I don't sweat it. It is growing and I just have to depend on word of mouth because I cannot afford proper advertising 🙂

I consolidated some of the forums a little bit yesterday and I tried to only put the most active or new single player games to the front and the rest are under the general area. Starwraith games are still being worked on and people talk about them so I will make a forum today for this game series and try to move all the posts in there.

Looks like I'll be spending a few bucks on this. This is pretty much how I'd like to play EVE 😀

Plus there is a lot of community support and mods being created so it should bring some enjoyment for a while. Try out the demo of it you can play free for like 60-90 mins.
