To all SSC Station occupants

Thank you for the donations over the past year (2024), it is much appreciated. I am still trying to figure out how to migrate the forums to another community software (probably phpbb) but in the meantime I have updated the forum software to the latest version. SSC has been around a while so their is some very long time members here still using the site, thanks for making SSC home and sorry I haven't been as vocal as I should be in the forums I will try to improve my posting frequency.

Thank you again to all of the members that do take the time to donate a little, it helps keep this station functioning on the outer reaches of space.

X vs X2 vs X3:R/TC - What was the best X game?

I really enjoyed X2, I'm really enjoying X3:R, but I never played the original X. I just got my grubby hands on X3 so I can't exactly supply a worthwhile opinion. However, the curious nature of we earthlings as forced me to ask the community their opinions.

(God bless the school computers for this 😀 )

IMO X3 Reunion is the best. X2 was really awesome, but I think the dogfights were a pain in the "plasmawents" - if you know what I mean 😉 X had teh beauty of discovering a new world, but perhaps the world wasn't quite finished yet; IMO it needed a bit of polishment.

X3TC - as I already said - is for pussies. No offence, I really loved the GOD engine, the Terrans, but the whole think is dumbed down so badly (even after the Aldrin Missions Pack), that it really dissapointed me. Okay, it's cool for someone who is totally new to this world, but still.... Not to mention that the intro Egosoft made for this game was the best from them, it literally made me jump and scream like a little girl; but the storytelling was bad as hell. I was like "okay, so much for the tutorila, now bring me the game". And then I realised that THIS WAS THE GAME (okay, all the others had bad storrytelling, but I didn't go "OMGOMGOMG" when I saw their intro.

So IMO X3R is the most polished, perfected-to-the-most episode of the "original" trilogy. 😀

That is precisely why I didn't buy X3:TC.

Not being a fan of games. But if I had to pick one it would be x2,but its only because I like the manual docking.

I haven't played every X game and really only played XBTF for a week or two. Had other games like FS2 and IWar that were taking up my time and also at that time I liked the action a lot more than XBTF. So I waited and got back into the series with X3TC and even though I haven't played it much it is a decent game. I have to play more of it to really give it a review. But it plays well on my rig and the universe seems polished. I have some mods installed that was recommended on the egosoft forums.

The combat seems a lot better compared to XBTF and it seems like overall management of your resources is easier as well. I am hoping I can complete the game as a pirate style player. I want to just wreck havoc 🙂

X3R and X3TC came out generally close together so I didn't even bother with it. Maybe I will buy this gold box if it is cheap enough since it will have all releases in it.

Any recommendations on play style and if I can accomplish my goal of being a pirate is welcomed .

X2 for sure, especially because of the manual docking option, and the fact that you could enter stations and even automatic docking didn't "snap on" to the dock like in X3 and Terran Threat.. And even despite the awful bugs which crashed it every 5 minutes on OS X. 🙂

Dogfighting was bad, but the tactical stuff was better, so I tended to stand off from battles and do as much damage as I could from a distance before getting my hands dirty.

I've really not been able to get into the X3 and Terran Threat versions as they weren't anywhere near as immersive for me as X2.

I have all the X games, but because it takes so long to do anything in the original X BTF, I am still with this. Not a bad game, but its heavy going! I will complete that before moving onto X-Tension, which I noticed was missing from the list.

Isn't X-Tension a addon for XBTF?

Well kind of Darkone, it picks up where the original game left off and brought some minor improvements. It is an add-on in all but name, but cant you say that for TC as well over the original X3 game? I wonder why Egosoft never made an add-on for X2?

They did: it's called X3R 😆 No, seriously, X3 Reunion was originally X2 The Return, but the new features (yes, they were!), small things and the X3 Reality Engine which Ego developed made it into a totally new episode (you can still see the similarities between X2 and the early X3 in the 1st trailer Ego released). 🙂

I just got X3, so I may be wrong. But last time I checked, you could dock manually. You just turn off autopilot, right?

In x2 you could fly right into the station to dock then go EVA.best feature of the xgames.

Can't stand the first one X Beyond The Frontier if it had been made in 1989 it would have been good, but for a

game that came out in 1999 its utter rubbish.Every thing that should have been in it was then

added in the X-tension add on.

I certainly hope you are right about X-Tension Pinback, X-BTF is slow going. Might have it completed by next year! <img src="' http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_lol.gi f"' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

The series feels like a part of a larger projec who use iteration within development proscess.

So to me The latest is the best and most feature complete and finished.

But the whole series misses lot of polish. Could be there is no feature freeze.

Also in time some features where cut.

A ) The nice star gate travel X2

B ) The cockpits I miss them to a bit.

C ) The internal docking that was Cool I miss that a bit more.

They have reasons for that, wich I am not aware off. But so be it.

So X series could evole to something much risher with all of it included.

But I like the boarding feature a whole lot. this weight much higher as it is a gameplay feature wich add to the depth of the game. And is a extention to "Capping"

I hated X2 for the sole reason of that stupid manual docking, and the slightest bump against a space station made them attack and kill you within seconds. I mean how STUPID is that, its a bump, not like I attacked them. So after like the third failed attempt to dock, I said it wasnt worth the stress and time and never played it again..

X3R I've played maybe 30 minutes of. First time played it had a crappy graphics card so couldnt do much, second time it kept crashing for some reason. I'm reinstalling it now as I speak to give it another go, see if its any better.. But which I find best? None, cause they've all had some problem thats made them prety much unenjoyable and not playable in my views.

Well they are rough diamond wich missing peaces. Where every patch fill in some holes and polish it a little bit. After version 2.x. Same situation but less extreem.

I just found my save games and restarted after a long time X3TC. Had no clue what I was doing. To steep learning curve for replay value. But manage to board a Carrack? M7. Strip it and sell it.

Wow, found this old link and was reading it..my favorite...after doing them all to the very end was: X2. Not ebcause of any feature that made things easier, in space things arent easy. And ramming into a station IS your mistake, but they did get upset pretty quickly about it, should have just refused you to dock if you weren't capable of it, and yes, that was the problem, many like fast, easy games and this isnt one of them.

I'm an ametuer writer so story means a lot to me, features like fleet actions mean much, much less, so if there isnt a good reason to be there...why go? X2-X3 were all about the Brennan Family, and for those that dont know...the original reason XBTF was made was because a test pilot got lost in space, and wound up here. That was Kyle Brennan, so the whole reason the X series existed was because of him. After X3...they dropped the family and went a different direction, and I feel that was a mistake, its like making a baseball team to enjoy baseball and then after a few seasons, switching to hocky..lol. The X series was always about the lost pilot and his survival in the new universe, the fact they moved away from that means they had less talented writers or the company wanted to try soemthing new without losing their fan base...which they are slowly doing anyways.

Might be moving back in that direction with the new game.

I've played every X game since X2 a bit, but I don't understand how TC is dumbed down? What could you do in X3R that you can't do in TC? The only thing I remember is that there were tutorials and instant action in X3R and there weren't any in TC.

I think he meant the opposite. It's what you can do in TC that you couldn't do in Reunion. The UI is simpler, money is easier to make, the enemies aren't as tough, the weapon selection is made simpler (they took away most weapon variants but added more base types so I consider that a neutral change). The mission system was probably the biggest overhaul, made super easy and accessible.

The gameplay is mostly the same, so I don't complain, but TC and AP got a lot easier than X3R if you just played vanilla. I personally like the additions and the UI so I gradually moved on from Reunion but for awhile it was my favorite (with XTM, which was amazing... there is only one good mod like that for TC/AP and it destroys framerates in SETA and I was too lazy to figure out how to disable the engine trails so I gave up on it).

is X AP a significant improvement over Reunion or TC? What have they added?

Just moved you post to this thread as it seems more appropriate to your question as the other thread is about Rebirth.

Depends really. It adds another storyline layer and some interesting stuff, but TC does offer plenty already and albion prelude doesn't really add that much to it. Its really a matter of if its worth its money, and im not 100% sure on that.

Goodness....... here I go again. 🙄

I know this is an old thread, a VERY old thread, but I've restarted my attempt to do a full playthrough of X BTF. This will be, at least, my sixth attempt. Being older now the pace is better for me and I am making good progress. Already set up my first factory and thoroughly exploring each and every sector. This time, I know it, is the charm!

Um.....I hope! 😮

X2 is still the best tho out of the older games but I have to say the new X4 goes a long way to recapture that same feeling I had with the second game. 😉
