RE: Removing Elite/Frontier content
<t>Hey people, For what it's worth (and I haven't been involved since 2011), I agree that Elite/Frontier content should be removed from Pioneer. When I appealed here for contributors in 2010 it was a weakness on my part that I allowed content that may have been derived from Frontier to enter Pioneer ...

<t>I'm in favour of a player character who can 'walk in the snow and not leave a footprint', as Brianetta has sortof described. It may seem like a weird reason, but I feel that the vastness of the universe is the central thing in Pioneer, and that the player should always feel like a stranger ...

RE: Logo art for Pioneer
<t>I like to think of pioneer as being a 'space adventure game' rather than a space simulator. I think a logo shouldn't say "pioneer space simulator" because people will think it is going to be as dull as microsoft flight simulator or something. Space is awesome and people should expect to have ...

RE: Wanted: new screenshots
Yes how was the glossy effect achieved? There is no support for anything but plain diffuse in the ground shader so I am assuming the glossy look is just due to the terrain being kindof high contrast colors

<t>A very worthy effort. I would just highlight the wise words of Linus Torvalds, so this endeavour can start on the right foot:"Please, we do NOT fix compiler warnings without understanding the code! That's a sure way to just introduce _new_ bugs, rather than fix old ones. So please, please, please ...
RE: 3D Galaxy
<t>My feeling was that the sector grid had to go, because it was out of keeping with the kindof sphere of stars that the new sector view showed. But some sort of plane for the star depth spikes to sit on would be nice perhaps. It might look better of that plane was limited to a circular area so that ...

RE: Pioneer versus SpaceEngine (graphical features request)
The clouds and the reflections on those screenshots are lovely. The crazy rays around the stars look bad though. There is a "no pink nebulae" rule, and I think there should be a "no crazy 2nd coming of jesus sun effects" rule.

You can play with lower detail level, but basically the terrain fractals should have a CPU budget. Some of the terrain fractals are probably using way too many octaves of perlin noise. Maybe not all of them are necessary to create the same effect

Pioneer is 3 years old on Monday 30th
<t>Hi people,I checked the timestamps on a very old snapshot of Pioneer, and it turns out the project was born on the 30th may 2008, so Pioneer is 3 years old on Monday. Those early days were a fornicatory scramble to get everything coded as quickly as possible. I thought I would have a game in 4 ...

RE: Alpha 8, and a new lead programmer
<t>Dunno. Some time I would guess. I think John is departing somewhat from my 'version 1.0' plan, where we aim for mostly FE2 feature parity plus a few juicy extras. This means there are some deeper changes in the pipeline, like dynamic, evolving universe. Probably the right thing to do.I might have ...
