RE: How do you simulate an economy?

<t>I did a similar thing to Magnox. However, in my game, the object of the game is to do the job of the NPC freighters!Since I've not yet put in AI competitors, I put in some additional constraints. Firstly, I cap the price of tradeable stuff to within x% of a 'base price'. So say the price of rare ...

RE: Is SciFi "Exhausted"?

I think it's more the feeling that none of those settings or scenarios are particularly new nor innovative. They may be well written, but at the same time, they are just employing the same old tropes.

RE: A planet in a four-star system!

<t>The planet in the alpha centauri system may be in tidal lock, and so have a cooler far side. However, it has also been suggested that systems with this type of planet often have other similar small rocky bodies further out as well, so there is still hope for finding another earth-like ...

Firefly. The only problem is in fleshing out the universe as the TV series was a little truncated. I heard rumor of a firefly MMO many moons ago but dunno if it ever materialised

Is SciFi "Exhausted"?

<t>This is essentially a repost from another forum, but interested in what you guys make of ithttp://www.nerds-fea...-exhausted.html I don't read prolificly, the name dropping can get a bit much, but the basic thrust of the argument is that since science fiction (and genres in general ...

Yeah, that's the other point: Making sure players don't get bored sitting around twiddling their thumbs whilst they wait for their ship to arrive in real time

RE: 2045: A New Era for Humanity

<t>The problem with your population graph is it doesn't show the whole story. Traditional subsistence farmers typically have big families, because more children means more help on the farm, and most of those children will not survive to adulthood. For city dwellers, those kids become a burden, as ...

[Game Design] FTL Travel Costs

<t>(Sorry if this is in the wrong forum section, but I can't see where else to post)I'm designing a game where players trade goods between space stations in a solar system.I need to work out what the cost of travel should be. As far as I can tell, there are two options:1). Cost to jumpThe ship ...

Does anyone have any details about the universe star conflict is set in, how players will move around, whether there will be any capturing and holding territory or stations like in Eve Online?

Are there any space sims (or combat flight sims for that matter) that have two pilots per fighter? Now that would be an interesting challenge

Maybe this is a good example of why the genre is unpopular. It may be a situation display, but if you call it a map, people get the idea of a map.

RE: Why is Space Sim Gaming so unpopular?

<t>You can solve some of the problems by giving frames of reference to the player. Scenery, especially that which is in the actual combat arena, such as a big battleship or spacestation help in allowing us to work out up and down, left and right. Even if the brain picks an arbitrary up, at least it ...
