The irresponsible Captain Tylor

Post by SpaceRider »

Hi people, unfortunately, space movies or series, generally space operas with humor are very rare. Beside "Space Balls" and "Galaxy Quest", I do not know something else of that quality. Yesterday I stumbled upon "The irresponsible Captan Tylor", a Japanese humorous anime space series: short, the main character, Justy Ueki Tylor, joins the United Planets Space Force with hoping of an easy life, not really being aware of the consequences. Tylor manages to get out of near-death situations with a childishly cavalier attitude or other unexpected behavoiur and "The Devil's own luck", confusing other people who wonder if he is either the most brilliant military mind or just a lucky moron.I saw only a few clips yet but this seems to be interesting. Has anyone watched more?RegardsSpaceRiderEDIT: Trailer added

Hi Geraldine,I do know "DarkStar" and "Hitch Hikers Guide", and they are amusing, but to be honest, "Space Balls" and "Galaxy Quest" made me more laugh. Not to be misunderstood, "Hitch Hikers Guide" is brilliant, especially the idea of the "Altair Dollar", but it is nothing I would enjoy more than one time. "Space Balls" and "Galaxy Quest" are movies which I can see again and again without being bored or not amused. However, I do not know "The Galaxy" and "Red Dwarf" yet and look forward to check out them.RegardsSpace Rider

Couple of other films are Galaxina. Bit hit and miss as it fall flat in a couple places during the film but I like it. :D Then theirs Morons From Outer Space, it’s a long time since I have seen this but as far as I can recall it could give Plan 9 from outer space a run for its money its that bad.

Oh my, I forgot about Morons From Outer Space! Yes I remember that 80s movie from the team that created NOT The 9' O Clock News. That bit where Mel Smith sneezes inside his space helmet   Having said that though, both that movie and Red Dwarf use the British sense of humour. As I have seen elsewhere, sometimes those from other counties might not "get it". Humour, can at times, be a cultural thing. :)

It’s a howler of a film. Been well over 20 years since I’ve seen it, maybe its time for a revisit.I think you are right it’s not a film you could recommend to any one out side of Britain. Ah! not the 9 o clock news, essential viewing. :D That damn trucking song is forever stamp on my mind.

Hi people, sorry you misunderstood me. I just liked to know if you watched more from the series "The irresponsible Captain Tylor", not from other Sci-Fi comedy movies. But I have to admit, it was interesting to read as well :).Now I watched all episodes of "The irresponsible Captain Tylor" and I can tell it is really worth to be seen! It is not only comedy, there are also moments of battle, drama and (listen ladies) romantic situations, but the story also transports a message. This message is quite unusual for a Japanese movie, it is the catchphrase of Captain Tylor: "Do the best you can and let it run", do not care always for control and conformity. In fact, Tylor's way of action, along with luck, gets him and his crew out of hopeless situations, even when their enemy is better at strategy, cleverness and material. And his irresponsibility is just the way of getting complicated things to simplicity, seeing the good in each person (regardless if friend or enemy) and being confident no matter what happens. But you need to watch all 26 episodes to understand the series because it is building from episode to episode and you finally understand the message at the end of the last one. I can highly recommend this series to all who like comedies with more than laughters in best tradition of Charlie Chaplin movies.RegardsSpaceRider
