Oh... hmm, cheap certainly! I'll refrain from castigating it, or the air will turn blue! I 'maintain' my brother's and my niece's computers - he now has BT via copper (he used to have bloody Talk Talk), she has Virgin (aka Vermin) via cable. Myself... I use Sky via copper, which I've found to be excellent value. So I have experience of all four of those ISPs. I hesitate to actually recommend something, but if you can get a good deal from Sky, then go there - friendly and helpful tech-support (call-centres based in Scotland, which I like), and rock-steady internet. My deal costs £10 per month (plus the landline of about £12 per month, of course), and I have unlimited usage (no caps) - 20 downstream and 1 upstream.

Perhaps it is my ISP after all or my distance from the US server?
This seems to be a pretty common problem. I have the same issue, and I use Comcast out in New Mexico. I find it unlikely it's ISP related.

Remember all it takes is a pause or a few dropped packets to hose your download, thats why rock solid connections are key to completing downloads and noise on the line can effect this. People tout speed as the huge thing, I would much rather know my connection will never (if ever) drop packets than have a killer connection speed. 100kps is decent speed and you can do anything with it like stream HD video and download large files. So I think it comes down to the quality of the lines your packets are going through to go back and forth from SSC. I think most if not all of the complaints about downloads have been from overseas so there must be something that is causing it? Whether it is the lines of the provider just isn't upgrading their equipment like they are supposed too.

Thanks for your ideas Cody. I thought about SKY but don't you need to have a TV package with them to get the best deal? I don't have SKY TV as I barely watch the crap on the terrestrial channels as it is. Virgin needs cable which I don't have in my area. So my options are limited, but I will keep hunting. <img src="'http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//icon_e_smile.gif class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> I think Darkone must be right, its quality rather than the distance of the connection that is causing the problem. So much for 21st century telecommunications! <img src="'http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//girl_wacko.gif class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':girlwacko:' />

I don't even possess a television - I hate the damn things! I pay Sky a monthly supplement of £2.50 for not using their TV - if I did, broadband would cost only £7.50 per month - mad!

And also for me too <img src="'http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//girl_sad.gif class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':girlsad:' /> I switched my ISP but the download quits about a third of the way through. Could the download be broken up into smaller parts? I am sure that would work (as it did with FFE3D), say each one about 100 megs in size?

Geraldine,Which file are you trying to download again? Let me know and I will try to break it into smaller pieces if possible. It might require me getting permission from the original owner, and I will also have to get permission to use the FTP access to this site to get the files as my laptop that had all of them stored on it resently had severe problems. So to make a long story short, I will make every effort to do what you requested, but it might take a bit of time. Sorry for the problems that are occuring. I must admit that I am at a complete loss as far as being able to come up with a reason for it. All I can promise is that I will do my best to help folks access the files they want.

HI Mike,That will be entirely up to Wdboyd. He has visited here a couple times, so I would think that he would share any progress with us. To my knowledge though, he has not yet done any work on the Red Rift as he has moved on to other interests for the time being anyway. If I happen to hear anything from him about the Red Rift I will be sure to pass it on to you. I can tell you that from the last conversation I had with him about it (quite a while ago) the Red Rift will be quite the epic mod if he decides to do it. We discussed using some of the characters I created while writing for the Starshatter Chronicles, and William said he was very interested in using them along with my namesake Consul Williamson and of course the Bismark family. So I'm sure if he gets back into Starhstter modding, this one will at least rival his solcom mod which in my opinion was easily the best mod anyone ever made for Starshatter. All I can tell you though at this point is that as soon as I know anything as far as updates are concerned I will pass them along. At this point, I am attempting to figure out how I can help folks out who are having trouble downloading some of the larger files from the site. Nice to hear from you!!

Geraldine, I'm not sure why my direct link isn't working for this download: http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/downloads/monthly_06_2012/Starshatter_TGS_v5.05_Full.7z might try to download and re-upload this to see if that helps, but I was able to download with no problem (as ususal, I kinda want to see this issue people talk about so I can give evidence to the provider). I will see if the download utility will support direct links to download from.

I'm having problems downloading Starshatter mods (and IIRC I am a gold member aren't I?), Firefox's DL window shows me going at 25.4 kb/s, when normally I'm in the 300+ range. Is that down to my ISP or just distance?EDIT: Now I closed everything else (Steam, Youtube etc) the download's slowed down to 12 kb/s. Ideas?EDIT 2: And stopped at 45.1MB, Download managers just get the index.html file and not the actual file itself

Thanks for looking into it Darkone, but I think splitting the download would still be the best solution

Just wanted to update everyone. I am not sure what is causing folks to have so much trouble with the download section. I have been trying it out and I was able to download the Starblazers mod and several other of the larger mods with no trouble at all. I am working on getting some of the more popular mods downloaded back onto my system since I had a hard drive failure wipe out the place where I had all of the files stored. Thanks heaven I was able to have them saved here or they would all be gone. Once I get them back onto my HD, I will be able to make personal arrangements with those having problems to find another temporary avenue to download them. Please be advised that this will take some time as there are lots of files there. I know that several have asked for Starblazers, Babylon 5, and BSG. I have them on my home hard drive now, so if you want any of those and know of a place where I could make them available to you, let me know. I am just very stumped as to why the downloads work fine for some but not others. Sorry for the trouble.

Uh oh, <img src="'http://spacesimcentral.com/forum/public/style_emoticons//girl_impossible.gif class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':girlimpossible:' /> I forgot! Bradd, I got it from the alternative download section that Darkone kindly set up.

Geraldine,No problem. I'm glad you were able to get it. There are still other folks having trouble anyway, so it's not like this is a wasted effort on my part. I want to re download everything anyway so I can have the files from the old site on my HD. Hope you are enjoying the mod you downloaded.Bradd

I have tried to DL the main exe full zip four times and the alternative DL Darkone provided returns a error. I get around 55 to 60 MB before the DL stops. I have tried managers and they just DL the index.html. Any help would be appreciated.
