i suppose if you look at the international shipping lanes it does .......but im talking deep space ......this kind of thing would probly only happen in an factions core system ..but not its outer colonies

How'd you mean? I'm really curious, not just stirring. My Dad and I are meant to be sailing across the Atlantic (if it finally happens) next month, which is a pretty big ocean, yet we've still fitted an AIS antenna/receiver so that we don't get ploughed down by one of the few dozen cargo/oil/etc ships we expect to run across on the crossing.spike1984's point about that being reasonable within the Sol system but not even a fraction as busy just a few system away is probably true.Andy

Basically, I'm happy for a few things to define the Elite universe that just patently don't make sense in the real world:
[*:31jtone3] The galaxy is full of small spacecraft carrying mere tens of tonnes on casual, interstellar trade routes[*:31jtone3] It's worth building a trading post in a system with practically no people, and no resources[*:31jtone3] Despite the fact that profit is insanely easy to make, number of uptakers remains limited[*:31jtone3] Firing a weapon near a port is a capital crime requiring no due process[*:31jtone3] Openly advertising for contract killings is fineMy list gets bigger the longer I think about it. It's a suspension of disbelief thing. I never felt that Frontier was a portrayal of how our galaxy was really going to end up. I did love the universe that Braben envisaged, though, and I'm fine with Pioneer making the same kind of universe.Addendum: I do not subscribe to this trope. To me, space flight is flight, and I'm a pilot, not a sailor.

Ah I see, no my point wasn't that *we should* have that much traffic, for one thing it might not suit our gameplay at all, my point was that now I'm an adult and not playing on my A500/A1200 it seems really really weird that there's not this kind of volume to the space traffic around. It's one of the things that breaks my own suspension of disbelief nowadays.I don't actually see a lot of conflict in these two things though, there are orders of magnitude more small ships than large, many of them cargo carrying. Another thing that surprised me was the lack of luxury or cruise liners in Frontier. Making regular runs from Sol to tourist worlds, or vice versa since Earth was a tourist world. Pioneer is very similar to Frontier, and I don't want to break that link, but even years ago the flatness of variety struck me as an oddity that was driven more by technical and authoring limitations than an intentional design.

Oh dear god no! If Pioneer goes that route I'm taking the codebase and forking off

I am a sailor, I sail on the _sea_, I _fly_ in the skies and I _pirate_ in space

There's something I wanted to get done today, but I forgott about it, because someone posted a link to TV-tropes...

Here's a rationale as to why the ships in Pioneer are rather small. We could say that opening a hole in space-time becomes progressively more inefficient related to the mass of the ship. In other words, it would require more fuel per ton to jump a larger ship than a smaller one. It would reach a point where all the ship's cargo space would have to be filled with fuel to be able to make a jump. A ship larger than a certain mass wouldn't be able to jump at all.

It's believable. An upper bound at the value where the fuel required to move the fuel is more than the fuel itself... to say nothing of the rest of the ship.

i dont suscribe to the space is an ocean trope as a general rule of thumbbut this part just sounds ..for lack of a better word ..logical
Quote:
"since seafarers long ago evolved the organizational techniques necessary to safely operate a self-sufficient vessel in a potentially hostile environment for an extended period of time, so there may well be reasons to adapt some nautical administrative and logistic features (and the terms for them) instead of inventing everything from scratch."
it just makes sence to me ......the human race has a habit of making familiar things in an unfamiliar enviroment ..............its how we survivealso perhaps its all too easy to stray away from games into realism ......if shit got too real it might detract from the fun .......im sure their are space nerds out their (im semi one of them) who would make a space game as accurate as possible .....where you need the skills of neil armstrong to fly the ship ....and their is no hyperspace so it takes billions (generslised term ..not accurate i understand) of years to get to proxima centaurifortunatly i ...and im sure most on these boards here ..have the sence to keep it real ....without actualy keeping it real ......were space nerds but gamers at heart ......so my question is ..where DO you draw the line

Is it available in white? I like my space ships white, like real ones.

White!?! I prefer black for that stealthy look

Whats this Gernot? Another new ship? Whats it called?

white...i never thought about that... too realistic perhaps

yes, a new ship, named "Hullcutter" ready for alpha15, if the fixed submodels (included) got installed to.changes - new scanner types- moved "selector.lua" to "sub_models", (for some sub_models it needs to be in front of them) - resized Eagle to fe2 size/scale- resized Lynx (size 2xFE2, mass = FE2)- re-enabled my missile models- updated pilot models, less variations (seat and helmet must be positioned separate)if you overwrite the existing pilot model some of my older models might not work (some other perhaps too),these are- constrictor- courier (fix ready)- ip_shuttle (perhaps)- sidewinder- viper_xi will update them soonto be sure it will work rename the NEW "pilot1" folder to "pilot" and replace old courier model, "squadsign_4" doesn't exist anymore. i tried on a maiden alpha15 and it worked.

not bad for a scripted model at all,i'm very sorry, small mistake, scanner model on "Hullcutter" wasn't called proper.don't worry, as soon as i fixed all my models, i will put all updated scripts together.

next new ship

"Shift"i could write here what kind of ship it is, but imo that isn't important, just a ship like many others, imagine your own "story".i know, the wings cross the turrets laser possibly, but as long as we have no turret lasers it doesn't matters.perhaps if such is possible once it's to think about to remove the wings in front of the ship.the first version had no wings in front, but imo it looks better with four wings.shift1.zip

Your just not getting this stealthly thang are you Brianetta? I am sure Gernot could do you a nice day-glo one with bright colours

And Gernot? That ship above has shades of the Nostromo about it. All it needs are 4 towers on it's back and your good to go. It would have to be a "heavy hauler class" ship though. What do you think?

only "Plattenbau" (buildings made from concrete panels) style buildings?scale's wrong too, one floor is 4 - 6 meters? (i guess i know now why the eagle has been scaled up. sometimes i think everything get's turned upside down just to make it different, any reason?)imho, there was no real reason to disable all other buildings, only that now all other tags except "city_building" won't work.ok, to counter that some (quasi futuristic looking) buildings i made (all bldg. including prev. posted ships was made between aug. and okt.)this picture shows only the new buildings.i know, i know, ugly, lazy, whatever... who cares?...bld_ind_p66.zipto sad the other tags didn't work no more, now all buildings get mixed, the scanner was of course ment as "city_starport_building", but i forgot...have phun!

oh, some posts in between...brighter colours, hm... turn gamma up. no i really like the colorvariable material, it makes them a bit dark with the texture i know.wait for a bright coloured one? i would like to turn the brightness up of the colorvariable material if that would be possible.because i experienced a bright material on a dark texture results in a better metallic effect rather then vice versa.actually this is a bit "extra dark" because of the added "used look" layer.further i can't say how reliable the screenshots are, i run pioneer on a macbook via "wineskin", enough to check the models but not playable (extremely slow) nor reliable in gfx, because it runs with emulated gfx.but that's not the point.let's see, perhaps someday i add some bright(er) variations. actually my PC is still out of order and fixes apart from changing existing model-scripts aren't planned by now.
@geraldineonly that it's far bigger...havn't seen that before, but of course other ships with similar bulges.
