you can still register XP by phone
Awesome! Back in the day, I re-registered my XP by phone, and only a couple of years ago, I re-registered my Win7 via auto.

Pick up a Pentium 3 motherboard with AGP, PCI AND ONE ISA slot on it only problem is, it has 12 blown cap on it, but if I can fix it then I will be able to get an even slower 98 machine.

Well, probably a number of different reasons but I think one of the main ones is that I was still using my Amiga 1200 up till about 2000, then I went to the dark side. So I missed out on what many consider to be the golden age of PC gaming, granted their were a few ports to the PlayStation but they were never that good like Wing Commander 3 which springs to mind.

Pinback something that might be an option if you have the harddrive space and a decent PC you could create VMs or Docker container that has Win98 or WinXp installed in them and then you can bring them online when you need them. All you have to do is dedicate some of your system resources to them when they are running.
This should help:

The appeal of using old hardware for me is that I get to put together system which I could never afford when the components were new, like I'm going to try buildings a sli build next.

I do miss my voodoo 3dfx card from back in the day

yeah they don't really do dual gfx cards any more now its just not worth it. I made my switch to Linux, so its been a fun experience with learning the ins/outs. And some games will not work at all in linux with wine/proton but that is what a VM is for. But I would say over 90% of the games I have run on Linux via steam work fine, same with EGS too.

Think a lot of people are starting to use Linux now, guess the end of windows 10 support is hitting hard.
It's alive my windows 98 machine is showing signs of life but I may swap out the hard drive for a sd card in the future, the xp one is still dead as a dodo.

Turns out it was a dying video card, now gone through my stash of card and try and work out what the two Nvidia are, as I don't want to use as ATI one.

I moved away from hardware, but I installed Win98, on a virtual machine, running on pcem!! Pentium II 450MHz with Voodoo III. I had a similar configuration for real: PIII 700M Hz and Voodoo III.
