Nothing is going to be the same after this.

I do so wish I could agree, Geraldine, but the bitter old cynic within me shakes his weary head sorrowfully. They called WWI 'the war to end all wars', but before too long, it was business as usual. Those at the top, those with power at their fingertips, those with their snouts stuck deep in the trough, have little interest in change. All they're interested in is control! <sighs wistfully>
I think I'd like to go live on Andromeda Station...

Ultimately, it's the people themselves that give them that power. Just as it will be upto the people to decide if these folk still deserve to have it. Will they? That is a question only history will answer. If people do nothing then, quite simply, all this can and will happen again because those in power don't bother to plan effectively to counter such threats. They are, and will be again, too obsessed in pursuing their own ideologies and gain at the expense and endangerment of others. That's what they do, that's what they always do. We have to decide just what kind of world we want to live in and ask ourselves, is what we have now, what we want the world, our world, to be like after this? Take your pick!
I've said in the past there is but two paths open to us; for us as gaming and sci-fi fans on here at the SSC, it translates as it's either a "Fallout Future" or a "Star Trek Future".

Choose wisely folks!

It seems to me that too many of the people have become sheeple! They need to wake up, and soon!
Some degree of normality has returned to my local supermarket (and others, so I'm told), but out and about the town centre it's kinda eerie! Yes, I snuck out! I reckon a good proportion of those closed shops and businesses will never re-open.
In other news: faced with spiralling costs for its Space Launch System (SLS) and pressure to put American boots on the Moon by 2024, NASA is to return the Saturn V to flight. <grins> A good one!

I had to go resupply yesterday, and thank the Universe for its sense of humor when I got back into my car guess what my playlist was on!?

I pumped up the volume and drove back all windows open on an empty road, not a cloud in a perfect blue sky...

Ah......if only. I would have loved to see one of those take off back in the day.

At the risk of seeming grim, I'm going to offer some thoughts and stats here, it may help you either protect yourselves, or the ones you love.
We know the virus is highly transmittable, and that those living in large urban centers are more at risk for contagion. But it is the ones that get infected that I want to touch up on, what's the most likely outcome if someone does get it.
The mortality rate by age group
80+ years old 14.8%
70-79 years old 8.0%
60-69 years old 3.6%
50-59 years old 1.3%
40-49 years old 0.4%
30-39 years old 0.2%
20-29 years old 0.2%
10-19 years old 0.2%
The mortality rate by pre-existing condition
Cardiovascular 13.2%
Diabetes 9.2%
Chronic respiratory 8.0%
Hypertension 8.4%
Cancer 7.6%

no pre-existing conditions 0.9%
Based on the above then, you can pretty much determine your own risk, the risk to those you love, and perhaps decide the level of protection you require. Remember, this is the chances of death in case of infection, becoming infected in the first place is quite easy...

Aye, the Saturn V was a thing of beauty! Like Concorde, which I never got to fly on. <sobs>
[gallows humour] As for grim: if I multiply my age risk by my health risk, I get a 28.8% chance of death. [/gallows humour]

Guess I have good odds, might need them being in the USA...
I wonder if the press is working here because we seem to be rising in cases everyday... maybe the press should concentrate on preventive and positive news instead of negative 24/7. We went up over 20k cases in the last 24hrs. Least the grocery stores here are pretty well stocked, I think the bulk of people have finished their panic buying.... or maybe in the next few weeks folks will be out of money. Gonna be a tough few months for a lot of people.
Regardless of of the outcome of the virus people are going to suffer, we just cannot shutdown and everyone sit at home and think the world is on pause until all is better. Millions of small business owners are going to suffer big time, many of people laid-off are suffering right now. Never thought it would have been a virus that would change the world..... but least as a world we have the small chance of maybe fixing some things we have done wrong. I hope we can do things for the better for once. ;)

Sorry D1, whatever is in that video the only "truth" I'm sure of is that it will never come from Youtube / FB / whatever...
Too many political interlopers with their own interests and agendas roaming free in there, and not many if none with the average citizen at heart for sure

Very true @d-c-elington, I was mainly interested in all of the documents and messages found about some of those doctors. I doubt highly we will ever know because of China's lockdown on information getting out or key people disappearing. So I understand we have to speculate and take leaps on random info. I doubt highly this was a natural occurring virus... it has other known virus components in the covid-19 virus, I am pretty sure this was man made. This darn virus has literally changed our world, the death rate may be low when considering the whole world. But the whole world is suffering economically from this, so many people not working or lost their jobs. Not good, govt's cant just print money because inflation will come about soon after. Will definitely be an interesting next 12 months to see how this all pans out.
I hope everyone is okay out there in the world and no one has lost their employment. So far I am still working, have had a small cough but no other symptoms.

@sscadmin well I don't know about the engineering but I honestly can't see who is benefiting from the current crisis. Also I'm afraid that our current technology may have lured us into forgetting that we are still fundamentally "animals", and as such susceptible to infectious diseases.
About national debts I'll venture back to the "4X game" analogy. The criticality of such an event would depend on one thing: does your empire have the resources (stockpile or production) to feed its peons while they need to stay home? If the answer is "yes" you would just easily weather the storm and go on... The fact is our world does not currently suffer from any shortage of anything (at least the said "developed" countries but that's another issue). So I'd say that "printing money" is probably how our rulers feed us under the circumstances...

Fourth week of lockdown here (UK), and I'm already going stir-crazy! Another six months? Ouch! It's a glorious spring day out there, and I simply have to get some sunshine and fresh air, so I'll be sneaking out later.
