Ships and Stations for Pioneer

Hello all. I noticed your project recently and that you guys are taking contributions. I've never played, but I like the concept of reviving Elite, even if only in spirit. I'm almost finished with my first contribution:[hsimg]http://i1132.photobucket.com/albums/m573/InfinityAmbassador/AdderRenders.jpg[/hsimg]I thought it would be nice for you guys to have an easter egg ship or two. This one is my take on the venerable Adder, with 2104 trianlges (around 1900 or so more triangles of detail than the original model. The landing gear are a seperate object and can be animated to extend and retract and the textures are 1024x1024 for the hull and 512x512 for the landing gear. The textures for the gear is complete, and the diffuse texture for the hull is nearly complete. When I'm done, I'd be happy to submit it however the developers want. I will also add onto this thread whenever I begin another project.I noticed something modeling this:No matter how much you spruce it up, this ship is always going to look cheesy, as it's a remake of an 80's sci-fi game's ship.

I like it. Please do open an issue on the Gitbhub issue tracker (link in my sig) if you want it to be noticed by the project maintainers.

Finished? Naïve (-:Note: We do already have an Adder, before you decide whether to begin scripting this ship up.

Looks good, ultra-simple, but clean&good. One thing: putting text into the textures in the future might not be a good idea because it will be identical for all ships. When you submit this to the tracker, if you export it as .obj I'd appreciate if you also put .blend, .max, or whatever source format you have, available.

Oh I think thats ok, to me they don't look too similar. This new one can simply be an Adder mk2 or some other name.

I was actually mulling that very possibility as I posted that last!

It occured to me as well.I tried uploading last night, but it needs a username and password. Can someone tell me how to set those up?

What were you uploading, and to where?

I clicked the link in your sig, and clicked "New Issue" or summat like that. A window popped up asking for a screen name and password. I tried the ones I set up for the forum, but that failed.

Github is in no way connected with this forum. You'll need to create an account there. https://github.com/signup/freeUpload your file somewhere, then open an issue and put a download link and a description there. Then we can look at the model and what remains to be done (scripting, lods, etc.) and continue discussion in the issue. It is also worth repeating again that this forum is not an official submission channel, so you can chat here or post about work in progress but to submit you'll need to open an issue on the tracker.

Thanks. Are there any FTP site's that you guys prefer?

No, just make sure the link is long-lived. It needs to exist for as long as the issue remains open, which has been months in some cases (though that probably won't happen here).

All the relevant files have been compressed in a .zip file and uploaded, and an issue has been created: TerranLiason - New Ship - Adder Mk2.I've been asked to make sure with you guys that I'm going to get credit for my contributions. I'm not worried, you guys seem like an honest bunch, but it is a legitamate concern, and would ease the worries of the one who asked to make sure.

Of course. All contributors get their name or pseudonym listed in AUTHORS.txt and eventually in the credits scroll (when we have one!). I usually approach first-time contributors privately to ask them how they'd like to be credited as I merge their work. Expect to hear from me soon :)

TerranLiason, once credited you'll likely have the most awesome sense of ownership. (-:One thing: Pioneer is a GPL project, and all contributions will be licensed as GPL. This means that you could find your work being used in other GPL projects in the future, including derivative versions, potentially in commercial (but free) products. Now is probably the time to make sure you're OK with that.

GNU Public Liscence? Sure, fine with me. It's made for you guys, technically it's out of my hands once you accept it, right?

You retain ownership and copyright of your work, and our tracking system enables us to know exactly what belongs to whom. You retain the right to also release it under other licenses, for example. If some commercial games company wanted to use your Adder in their non-GPL game, you could allow that, where the rest of the Pioneer team could not. We license the work from you, under the GPL. We never take ownership.
